Finding My Way: memoir of a journey through cancer

Rate this book
This is Mike’s story. And you know what? It’s your story too.

This is so much more than one man’s battle with cancer. It’s more than one man struggling to find meaning in suffering. It’s more than one man’s victory.

This is for all of us. We all battle with something, we all struggle, we all wrestle and question, we all suffer. And we all can be victorious. Someday.
So as you read the story that unfolds in the pages of this book please don’t read it as a spectator. Walk this road too; make it your own journey, your own battle, your own quest to find the meaning in suffering, to find God when you feel alone, to find the Light in the midst of deep darkness.

Make this your story. You may not have cancer, you may never have battled that particular monster . . . but you’ve battled a monster. You’ve struggled, you’ve prayed and argued with God and cried in His arms. You’ve suffered in some way.

In March of 2008 Mike was diagnosed with colon cancer. He was thirty-five, healthy, married with three beautiful daughters. He was not a candidate for cancer. And yet, there it was.

What you have here is a compilation of Mike’s journaling interspersed with some other thoughts he’s had since that awful, wonderful year. You’ll find a chronological order of events from diagnosis to first doctor visits to surgery to chemo to more surgeries. It’s all there. But more than a record of events you’ll find a spiritual journey that will resonate with anyone who has been touched by a trial or suffering or sorrow or pain. There is brutal honesty in these pages.

Because we’ve all been touched by suffering in one way or another, this book is valuable for anyone. Hopefully, you’ll find some hope here, some joy, maybe some laughter, some enlightenment, some inspiration. And hopefully, through the story in these pages you’ll come to see God in a different light.

Never have I wanted to give a book more than the allowable 5 stars! This is a tremendous book. It ministered so very much to me. Serious and pure spiritual nourishment.

I have read all Mike Dellosso's books, all Christian fiction till now. He is a wonderful author. This book details his diagnosis of Stage III colon cancer at age 35 and how God carried him through.

I wept through much of this book and bookmarked nearly every other page. If you are going through a spiritual battle, valley of any kind, not just cancer, this book will remind you and allow you to feel God's great love and care for you. Really, you will feel His arms around you in your trial.

It's not a long book, 124 pages, and it won't take you long to read it, but you will want to read it time and time again. I plan to go back and re-read my bookmarks any time I'm discouraged. I could feel God's anointing in its words. Personally, I feel you will never be the same after reading this book.

Mike speaks with all honesty, rawness and gritty at times, detailing his feelings at the diagnosis, his surgeries and all they entailed, his disgust at treaments, worries about his life and family, then his trust in God and God's mercies during this deep valley. He doesn't hold anything back and it shows. The reader feels his heart in these pages.

There is an old song written by Dottie Rambo, titled "In The Valley He Restoreth My Soul'. Never have I understood the meaning of those words of the song more than in this memoir.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is a must read for every believer. Please read it. You will not be disappointed. I guarantee it.

Don't let the name fool you. If neither you nor anyone you know has battled with cancer, don't write off this book's relevance. It's so much more! Mike loaded it with encouraging scripture that applies to every battle, every doubt, & every victory we experience daily. He shows us that like Job (in the Bible), it's ok to be honest & raw with God (God already knows us inside & out), but like David in the Psalms, he praises God in the end for the trials that strengthen our faith & build character. For this alone, it's a must read!

Speaking strictly of Mike's personal journey through his battle with cancer, the treatments, & all that is involved with it, there was still a very clear message for me. One not intended BY Mike, but THROUGH Mike, the lord was able to speak to me. God put a knot in my stomach & a pain in my heart as I read the details of Mike's journey & felt ashamed for all the little things (that don't even come close in comparison) that I have held onto over the years, citing as sources of pain & frustration to justify feelings & behaviors. He put me in check REAL quick about the tiny little specks of dust that I have DARED to hold onto & even name (like a pet) "problems".

Mike is due many thanks for listening to God's prompting & sharing something VERY personal with the world, so that others may relate, be encouraged, or (like me) have my pride knocked out from under me. What a blessing!!!

As someone who has been on this journey, I was very interested in reading this book. Although the author is very blunt about some of the horrible things faced as this battle is fought, it is not a depressing read. It is uplifting as he tells of his victory through this trial with God at his side leading the way. I did a lot of underlining, something I rarely do when I read. the following is one of my favorite paragraphs.
Can you picture it? I can see myself collapsed on the field of battle, worn, weary, armor dented and bloodstained, muscles aching, spirit deflated. Then God, my Father, my Protector, steps up, helps me to my feet, wipes the blood from my brow, and pulls me close. He whispers in my ear, " Be still, child. I'll do the fighting for you. " I've read that paragraph at least 12 times. This is a very inspiring read.
I just read this book again. I always go back and read parts that speak to me. I wanted to read it again after reading a book called The Ugly Duckling's Revenge by Tony Ross. This book was awesome. Sort of a sermon on how he came to the Lord. It was so much more than that. It was a blessing and also eye opening. A highly recommended book.
