What does it take to fuel a faith that burns bright, no matter what?
At different times in our spiritual journey, we may discover that we’ve somehow developed apathy toward the things of God. Instead of being fueled by spiritual passion, our faith seems to be running on autopilot—or maybe sputtering to a halt as we seek excuses to avoid spiritual engagement.
Through this six-week study, your eyes will be opened to the things that can undermine our interest in the things of God, and you’ll discover practical steps you can take to ignite a fire that will propel you toward a deeper, more meaningful faith.
Kay Lee Arthur was an American Christian author, Bible teacher, and co-founder of Precept Ministries International. Renowned for her accessible and inductive approach to Bible study, she helped millions engage deeply with Scripture. Arthur began her ministry informally, teaching teenagers in her living room alongside her second husband, Jack Arthur. Their work soon grew into a global outreach, headquartered in Chattanooga, Tennessee, under the name Precept Ministries International. She hosted the daily Bible teaching program Precepts for Life and became a respected voice in evangelical circles. Arthur authored numerous books and was a four-time winner of the ECPA Christian Book Award for titles such as A Marriage Without Regrets and The New Inductive Study Bible. Her ministry was rooted in a personal reawakening to faith in the early 1960s, following a divorce and a return to religious life. She and Jack also served briefly as missionaries in Mexico before founding their ministry. Arthur remained active in public faith-based initiatives into her later years and was known for her firm stances on social issues. She passed away on 2025 leaving behind a lasting legacy in Christian education and publishing.
Six quick but insightful studies for the person or group to stir up our passion for God, prayer, God's word, worship, sharing the gospel, and to understand how suffering can ignite passion.
Originally meant for small groups who can go through the lessons there and then, without having to bring back homework. I don't see why this can't be used for personal studies as well.
It would be great to have a hard copy as there is space to write in your responses to the questions and also the scripture is laid out for you to mark with suggested symbols that have bearing on the lessons. However, if you have a digital copy you can also use the note function in touch-screen or non touch-screen devices.
Great little bible study that could benefit our spiritual health. I have come across so many great devotionals in Negalley that I am hard pressed to choose just one to start with!
Thank you Netgalley and Waterbrook, Multnomah for this review copy. Sorry it took so long but this is my honest review.
This was a fantastic Bible study! Our church's Journey Women group went through this over the course of 4 months. The leader had gone through this book on her own several months prior. For all of us who participated, I believe we learned how to "annotate" (in our books, not our Bibles). For example, learning how to mark the differences between when "they" referred to the disciples versus "They" meaning the Trinity. It was a challenge at times switching back and forth between colored pencils. However, our leader exercised great patience; especially with some of us who tried to keep up! This is a great book to get your feet wet in inductive Bible studying!
Great study on what it means to be on fire for God. I actually led this study. I do no recommend trying to get a lesson done in 40 minutes. Most I had to break in to two parts in an hour setting.
I’ve never done a study like this before and I really liked it and found it very helpful. The book is divided into six chapters or six weeks. Each week had between five and ten passages of Scripture and three to six questions that went with each passage. It’s meant for an individual or a group to sit down together, read the passage, mark a few key items in the passage, and then answer the questions together. Each week could easily be divided into two weeks although you might lose the flow of the passages toward the point of the chapter. The passages of Scripture are right in the book next to the questions so it is easy to mark them up and refer back to them while answering questions.
There were “Insight” notes that helped explain the meaning of a word or a cultural note. For instance, in looking at 2 Corinthians 1:1-7, a note explained that “comfort” means “to call to one’s side.” So when we read that God comforts us in all our affliction, it means that God is at our side when we face afflictions (page 98).
It was great doing this study at the beginning of the year when my church was focusing on the spiritual disciplines. There are chapters on fanning the flame of our passion for God, the Word, Prayer, Worship, Evangelism, and Suffering. I think it accomplished its stated goal of igniting my passion for God. It left me hungrier for the fuel of the Word and spending time with the Lord. Throughout the study, the focus is on what God says and applying that to our lives. I appreciated that.
I would recommend this particular study as well as this type of study. People long to study the Bible together yet we are a busy society. Having a no homework study is a great option.
Thank you to Blogging for Books for providing me with a free copy of this study for the purpose of this review.
Are you going through the motions of walking the Christian path but lack the excitement you previously possessed or maybe never had? You attend church, sing worship songs, give thanks at meals, and say the right words to church members, but you want to be zealous for God. This is the Bible Study for you.
Kay Arthur and Mark Sheldrake have created a small group Bible study that requires no homework but still incorporates the principles of Inductive Bible Study. This Bible Study could spark a small group member’s interest in a more indepth study, like a Precept Upon Precept Bible Study.
Small group members observe Scripture, mark specific words, and discuss their observations. Key insights into the background of the topic or the definition of a word help participants understand the Scripture more fully. For example, week four examines worship.
“The Hebrew word shachah, most often translated worship or bow, means ‘to bow down, prostrate oneself.’ … A simple way to think of worship is to look at God’s worth and think and act accordingly.” (p. 56)
Each week examines a topic that influences passion for God:
Idolatry God’s Word Prayer Worship Sharing the Gospel Suffering
True to Scripture, Ignite Your Passion for God, is a great small group Bible study for busy participants. It will give them an introduction to Inductive Bible Study and hopefully, ignite their passion for God and indepth study.
I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review. I have been a Precept Upon Precept Bible Study leader.
I enjoy the Kay Arthur studies that use the Inductive Bible study method and this one was no exception. Our church Ladies' Bible study went through the study as a group. I led a couple of the sessions and found the study to be enjoyable both as a participant and as a leader. The study book was helpful as well with the questions and the Bible passages included.
