Independence Falls, Colorado. 1954. It was the start of a perfect summer--until the fog rolled in and changed everything. Now these heroes will explore their newfound abilities ... and each other.

Charlie Huston thought his life was over when a car crash destroyed his leg, ending his baseball career before it even began. That is, until he is trapped in the mysterious fog. When he recovers, he finds that he has an incredible new ability--he can transform into a mountain lion. Shifting into his animal form gives Charlie back all the freedom and strength he thought was lost for good, but he knows his friends and family would be horrified if they realized he could take the form of a predator. Then an emergency forces him to reveal his secret to the last person he would ever trust—the girl known in town as Briar the Liar.

Briar Rose Steele hasn't told the truth in years. She reinvented herself when she moved in with her aunt and uncle after the death of her parents. But ever since the fog, she's been incapable of telling anything but the truth--even when the truth hurts. So when Charlie Huston reveals himself as a shapeshifter, she can't pretend she doesn't know his secret. She also can't pretend that she isn't attracted to him. But Briar has another power--she can hear when people are lying. And in Independence Falls, there are plenty of secrets.

As she and Charlie work together to discover the truth about the fog, she'll have to face the truth about the town she loves ... and the truth about how Charlie makes her feel.

There's a saying in German:
Wer einmal lügt, dem glaubt man nicht, und wenn er auch die Wahrheit spricht.

The loose translation would be:
A liar will not be believed even when he speaks the truth.

(Though it does sound a lot wiser and more poetic when it rhymes, don't you think?)

Briar Steele knows exactly what that feels like. Ever since moving to Independence Falls at the age of 11, she's only been known as Briar the Liar. And rightly so. To cover up her insecurities and horrible past, she started spinning wondrous tales about herself and her family - and never stopped. That is, until the night of the Firelight Festival when the purple fog rolled in and stole her ability to lie. And, in return, made her a walking lie detector.
Charlie Huston used to have it all. A scholarship, a girl, a future. A life. Until it was all taken away in the blink of an eye. Now, he's half the man he used to be. Charlie is miserable and angry, and he only feels free and alive in the mountains - in the form of the mountain lion he can turn into at will since the purple fog knocked him out a couple of months back.
Being neighbors, Briar and Charlie have known each other for years, but it is the discovery of their abilities that finally brings them together now. But can they trust each other enough to let go of their pasts?
When the situation in Independence Falls gets worse, they have no choice but to rely on each other.

What can I say? Lily Cahill, you did it again! In my opinion, this one was the best installment in the series yet and I loved every second of it.
Charlie and Briar were my favorite couple so far, and Briar, in particular, my favorite heroine. I knew I would like her when she was introduced in Ignited, but I wasn't prepared to love her this much. She brought a fair amount of subtle humor into this book, without turning it into something comedic. I enjoyed her attitude and strength and her (granted, not exactly voluntary) honesty.
While Charlie was a likable and interesting character, too (yeah, I have a thing for moody, broody heroes), Briar totally stole the show.
I would have loved to see more of the protagonists from the previous books, but I was also thrilled to be introduced to great secondary characters, especially Charlie's family. Uncle Rick was pretty awesome.

I love how Lily Cahill yet again managed to interweave a beautiful, intriguing love story with the mystery surrounding Independence Falls. They created the perfect mix of romance, tragedy, suspense, mystery and humor, and I honestly can't wait to lay my hands on book 5. I need to know what happens next. Stat.
My guess: the follow-up will be about Lucy?

It makes me sad to see how few ratings and reviews this series has. Not only because I'm such a huge fan and I really want to share my thoughts on it with someone, but also because I can see how much time and effort Lily Cahill put into the writing and the research..
So everybody who reads this: go to the author's website, download a free copy of Sparked, and give it a chance. This series deserves far more attention.

The year is 1954, and Independence Falls has had its share of earth-shattering events and revelations. The young people who were changed by the mist have been outed and have risen far beyond normal heroicism when the mountain came down on the only highway into town. Still in shock, still wary of these superheroes, the town may still have to protect its own when the army comes marching in under the guise of military angels, until their pitchforks and horns show through.
Has everyone with an “ability” come forward? Charlie Huston has a secret and the last thing he wants is to have to expose himself to the legendary Briar the Liar, who for years grew up telling the most incredible falsehoods that she became a laughing stock to both young and old. But something is different about Briar, too, and like the boy who cried wolf too many times, no one believes she has an ability, even when tested. There they were, one hiding his ability and one trying to tell people that not only can she no longer lie, but she can tell when others around her are being dishonest, too.

When she learns of Charlie’s ability, they form a bond, two outcasts and two hearts looking for more. Like the story of Beauty and the Beast, this female lie detector and this shapeshifting man are in for more surprises than they could have imagined.

Lily Cahill brings the feel of an era long past and delivers it into our hands with Shifted while revealing two more Superheroes that the government would like nothing better than to have on their team. The feeling of a more innocent time comes through, as Lily Cahill takes a slightly different path in this addition to the series. The focus remains on Briar and Charlie throughout as Charlie must learn to accept his damaged body as a victim of an accident and learn to bring down the walls he has built. Who better to be honest with than the girl who can no longer lie? Once again, there is a sweetness, some humor and a little quirkiness here and there, which is what makes this series and Lily Cahill such an entertaining escape!
