born into oncubine, lovely Yuki had fought her way to the top of the fashion industry. Now, on the very threshold of success, her business was being sabotaged. No Paris or New York competitor hated her that much. No, the seeds of malice that threatened to destroy Yuki and her beautiful daughter, Dawn, had been sown years before...Shanghai, 1931: There, in a city dominated by warlords and seething with intrigue, two extraordinary men - one American, one Japanese - had loved an exquisite woman. The opulence, the excitement, the exotic nights would be swept away by the horrors of war. But the two men would find that their passions had condemned them to a dangerous alliance...and committed them to a promise that would span two decades and two continents, in an ultimate test of courage and desire.
I was caught up pretty quickly in this saga that takes place for the most part in Shanghai during the 30's. I'll admit my knowledge of the history between the Chinese and Japanese during this time was almost nil. The author spent time himself in Tokyo in the 40's working for the U.S. Army and you can tell in the details of the military history. Some parts reminded me of Memoirs of a Geisha or I guess I should say it's the other way around, since this book came out in 1988. This book has it all: history, war, romance, and even talks about the life of the fashion world during this time. Very good!
