Author Carolyn See wrote under the pen name Monica Highland, a name she shared with two others, her daughter author Lisa See and her longtime companion, author John Espey, who died in 2000.

up until page 59 this is a good book with an endearing character, our main characters grew up together and now have the time of their life , however theres distasteful virgin shaming, theres fetishizing of asian women , belittling asian women, rape, misogynistic dialogues, and later on the n - word freely used.

By the same author of the rather better novel, Lotus Land, 110 Shanghai Road is a bit too long and overly detailed. Nonetheless, it is an interesting book which gives a fairly accurate history of modern China from the time of the 1949 revolution into the 60s.

I loved this book, especially all the inside China references, but felt it got a little raw in places and kind of frantic near the end in an attempt to tie up all the loose ends. However, I did like the book.
