UNDERRATED SERIES ALERT!!!

This is the final installment of The War of Princes series.
I read the first three, giving 4-stars to the first book, and 5-stars to books two and three.

I really need to finish up this series but frankly didn't want it to end.

Steampunk Goodness.
Check it out if you are looking for something new.

I always struggle trying to write a review for later book in a series. I figure those who haven't read any of the books yet would be checking out the first in the series to see if it appeals to them, and those who have read and enjoyed the others in the series are already likely to pick up the next one. I also try to avoid spoilers, and it's difficult to avoid spoilers for previous books.

What readers who have not yet read these books may want to know is if the subsequent books are as good as the first, and if the ending is satisfying. It's so disappointing to invest in a series only to be let down and feel disappointed in the end. In my opinion each book in this series becomes better, and those who enjoy the first should enjoy the rest and feel the ending satisfying, as I did.

I found the story to be very imaginative and unique, it fits best I think as Young Adult Fantasy, but isn't simply a cookie-cutter story. There's adventure, danger, power struggles, deceptions, twists, and a dash of romance.

Finishing this book I felt that bittersweet feeling familiar to readers of coming to the end of time spent with characters who came to feel like good friends.

In "Lastland" Kat remains loyal to her friends, and stubbornly true to her goal to protect her beloved homeland of Haven, no matter what is thrown in her way. And quite a bit conspires to try to stop her. Although she has grown in confidence and experience she remains still believable as a real person, with doubts, fears, struggles to do what is best and right. I liked her quite a bit. I also appreciated the fact that although there is a romantic aspect in the story it never takes over the story, never derails the plot or becomes too much the focus, but rather is seasoning to add flavor.

I am so glad I discovered this series, enjoyed it immensely. And I look forward to seeing what else this author comes up with in the future.

I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

The End, man oh man this is tough. I feel a lump in my throat and I want to throw myself on my bed. This series has been amazing. If I had to pick out something I didn’t care for I’d have to say it is Kat’s mom I wish she was more but I’m not the one who wrote the book and everything else was so powerful that this storyline is nonplused. As careful as I’ve been to not drop any spoilers don’t expect any out of me now but I will say this. This ending isn’t perfect and it isn’t pretty but the last 10% was so powerful and so shocking and so revealing and so sad and so happy and so just that all I can do is appreciate it for what it is. A beautiful gift to the world so…Thank you A. R. Ivanovich I will cherish this story more than you know.

My Rating
5.0 As if you didn’t know…this gem has been a game changer I knew it was going to be special when I couldn’t resist giving it 5 stars from the beginning. Something I’ve never done with a series ever before. I cannot recommend these books enough!

What an ending! There are so many books that begin well, and then spiral downwards in the following books to a horrible end. I was delightedly happy with this series' ending. Not only was the conflict successfully resolved, but the characters continued to develop, and the plot twists kept coming. I've hardly ever read a book with so many great plot twists.

I love that Kat was able to return to Haven and show off her power & perseverance. Haven, the supposed utopia, became the deciding battle ground. Dylan finally grew up and quit being so self-absorbed. Ruby gets her chance to shine (tho I think her side could've been developed a bit more. Like, when did she discover her powers?) We get to learn the true history of the princes, and the characters who die, do so in a way that adds the perfect balance between mourning their loss, and making you agree they had to be killed off.

This series is a hidden gem of YA literature, on par with many bestsellers. I highly recommend it.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. (And I honestly love this series!!)

4.5 stars — Wow. I’ve learned that with this series I can’t trust my gut, and I should prepare for surprises. So I think I read this one on the edge of my seat, barely able to trust what I was feeling. But in the end? It was worth it. I was wholly satisfied with the way events played out and how things added up. I had a lot of questions that I needed answers for in order to be satisfied, and I can honestly say that I got them all. I feel like I came away with a good understanding of how things got to this place in the world, why choices were made, and I could follow how they progressed. Which is impressive given how fucked up Lastland is.

I’m not sure I’ll be able to really write much in this review, b/c I feel like little things could be inadvertent spoilers, you know? I ended the book still in love with Katelyn, and actually super happy that we got a bit of her sass back in this one. I’m still in love with Rune. I loved some of the enemies to bromances we got, and the snark that happened there. So much inappropriate laughing.

I fucking BAWLED in this one. I was truly invested in some characters, I connected with them, and it was so hard to watch them go through the struggles of this book. The climax was crazy, but satisfying.

Yeah. I don’t know. I just really enjoyed myself. I can totally see this being a series I reread in the future.

Reviews and other things found at [a cup of tea and an armful of books]!

Riding out the consequences of the events in Monarch prove to be a trial for Katelyn and company. Prince Varion is coming into his own power and trying to amend for his mistakes while the war continues to rage across Lastland. He begins to put in motion plans to end the war, plans that are so extensive that even Katelyn has little idea of how much he wants to change. Finally, Katelyn’s worst fears have been confirmed in Lastland: the war that has ravaged the outside world has finally reached Haven. Prince Raserion has brought shadows to her family and friends in Haven, a place that used to be green and safe. Fearing that time is not on their side, Katelyn has to return from Lastland to the original portal before she loses everything she loves.

While I was reading Lastland I came to the realization that I was done with the story before the story had even ended, which was incredibly unfortunate. I felt like I was reading regurgitated lines; a lot of the information about Dragoons and Hussars and their ruling parties were repeated. I already know the roles they play in the novel. I don’t need to be told for the third time (because this happened in Paperglass and Monarch too) of who Prince Raserion is or how bad the Margraves are. I know this because I’ve been reading the series from the beginning. It bogs down the narration and read a little sloppily to me; instead of giving me new information for the setting or the war, I was treated like I would have forgotten who these major players were in the interim between Monarch and Lastland, as well as the other novels.

This feeling was compounded by the special qualities of Katelyn. I hadn’t particularly liked or disliked her at the beginning of the series. She was a character who was interesting enough to follow along on her call to adventure throughout Lastland and briefly through Haven. At the conclusion of Lastland and the overall series, however, I’d kind of had it with her. When a character has a special ability, there needs to be some sort of limit to their abilities. There needs to be repercussions for using it too much, or not knowing how to use it. I understand the drive to write a happy ending where everything has worked out for the character, but unfortunately, that’s not relatable. Even though we are in a fantasy setting, we can’t be in a fantasy world where everything works out, particularly when a large part of the setting is during wartime. The things that were bad for her were handled very briefly and didn’t have an emotional and visible-to-the-reader impact.

Unfortunately, in an effort to have everything in the world be fixed in a happy ending sort of way, it gave a forced quality to the ending of the novel and series. The final events were heavy on the exposition side of things and I didn’t feel as though it did the entire series justice. This remains a good series that is a quick read with an interesting world and decent story line. For me, I won’t be picking it up again, but I do recommend it for the reader who likes a world of adventure, magic, and tales of coming into your powers.

3.5 stars.

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Okay, if you haven’t read The War of the Princes series yet, you are MISSING. OUT.
We’ve got a fantasy world like our own, hidden within another fantasy world.
We’ve got a driven, relatable, female heroine.
We’ve got the tortured love interest.
And a whole slew of other amazing characters.
There are twists. There are turns. People we’ve come to love die—it’s a war, remember?—but others live.

Lastland is the final book in the series. While book 1, Haven, remains my favorite of the series, Lastland is jam-packed with feels.

The War of the Princes has raged for hundreds of years, and Katelyn and crew will do everything they can to save her homeland of Haven and finally bring down Prince Raserion.

After four books I feel like I’ve come to really know these characters—Katelyn and Rune, Kyle and Dylan and Ruby, and so on—so a satisfying ending had to happen for me. I expected nothing less, and Ivanovich delivered. There were moments I wanted to throw my Kindle across the room. Moments I wanted to yell. Moments I wanted to hug the characters. I felt a whole range of emotions.

So now you’re thinking, if you loved it so much, why are you only giving it 4.5 stars? The answer to that is simple, I don’t really like military/war books. This series, despite the title, didn’t start out that way, but it sure ended that way. We’re talking epic battles of war. There were a couple times in the book where I just wanted to get on with things because I was growing bored with the war, and then Ivanovich would throw in a plot twist. This author knows how to hold a reader, even as I was starting to wonder about this book, she always pulled me right back in. And in the end, I leave Lastland with peace, glad to have had the chance to visit this world and meet these amazing characters.

Bonus: There was a plot twist from book 3, Monarch, which I had completely forgotten about due to the length of time between reading this book and that, which the author didn’t forget about, because she tied the loose ends in this book. We also get to find out what really started the war, which leads me to something I love about villains. Well written villains always have a realistic backstory—Well, realistic in the realm of the world in which the book takes place anyway!—and this book is no different. In the end, I felt a little bad for Raserion.

Long story short: This is a must read series I will continue to recommend!

Blog | Twitter | Instagram | "It's not what comes easiest that makes us valuable, Katelyn. The wealth of our character is determined by what we push ourselves to become."

As a note, an e-galley of this novel was sent to me via NetGalley by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not effect my opinions in any way.

Based on the previous three releases in the series, The War of Princes, we know what is set to come about in this fourth book. Action, war, loss, love, adventure, heartbreak and twists at every corner. If there’s one thing that longtime readers will have learned by now, it is that A.R. Ivanovich has many tricks up her sleeve to delight and shock her loyal fanbase.

Lastland is perhaps the best of the series and showcases Ivanovich’s knack for world building. Following her familiar formula of excellence, A.R. is at her finest when weaving together plots, toying with your heart and allowing her characters to grow even further.

After the startling revelation that Prince Varion had died and placed himself elsewhere to recover, Carmine’s betrayal and Rune having been possessed/taken by one of Prince Raserion’s shadow creations, the war is brewing at an all time high. And Lastland is set to shock us once more as Katelyn and Dylan search for Rune and Varion’s memories begin to come back to him fully.

The final book in the series is a fantasy novel and aimed at young adults.

With Rune in the clutches of a Gateling, Katelyn and Dylan, aboard the Flying Fish, are willing to sacrifice themselves to save those they love. Spurred on by the knowledge that Prince Raserion knows how to reach Haven, the two must muster every last bit of courage they possess to join forces with Prince Varion's army to defeat the evil Raserion and his abominable killing machine; the Monarch. It's time for the 700 year-old war to come to a head-will our heroes fulfil their destiny or does fate have other plans?

What a fantastic way to end a series. Some of the action sequences were a little difficult to imagine-probably so vivid in the author's head but sometimes tricky to convey to the reader's mind. Just my subjective opinion though. All the questions I had previously about the characters needing development and back stories were answered; and then some. Twists and turns were added upon layer and layer of action, and just when you think you have the ending figured out something different happens! The ending was not wrapped up too neatly but written so that the reader would be satisfied with the outcome at the point that the book stopped. I couldn't allow myself to savour the pages as I was racing to find out what happens at the end! The only problem that irked me with the book was the kindle copy I received- the formatting was all over the place with words running into each other and spaces appearing where there should not have been spaces.

Other than that I congratulate the author on an excellent job with an amazing idea. Thanks to Netgalley for the chance to review.

With Prince Varion, ruler of the Northern Kingdom, "reclaiming" his place, he is determined to end the war that has divided Lastland for 700 years. While Katelyn is torn as she tries to reconcile the boy she knew with the prince before her, she knows that Haven's future and that of Lastland hangs in trusting Prince Varion.

First, she must save Rune. Will saving him rid him of the Gateling that still clings to his body? Will Katelyn reach Haven in time to save the people? Will she try to burn too brightly and snuff her own light out?

This book is very battle heavy, but what would one expect? I can say that it didn't detract at all from the story for me personally. This final book in the story was perfection. It offered a wonderful resolution for our characters and the world they inhabit. It was nice to see everything wrapped up nicely with a few surprises that didn't disappoint.

The series as a whole is one of the best I've ever read, and I couldn't possibly recommend these books more highly.

Loved it

This series is one of the best kept YA fantasy secrets that has been written over the past 4 years. I have been a huge fan of this series from the beginning, and feel saddened that it is done. The final culmination of this ambitious, epic series ends with Lastland. The two immortal princes have been identified, and they have left a trail of death and loss. Kat has skillfully learned to use her abilities, and she needs to protect her home, Haven. With an army backing her, to lead a rebellion, will she make it to save her people in time? With this author's amazing otherworldly storytelling, and addictive characters she shaped this story and this world into something unforgettable. The structure, order and precision of the kingdoms and their military were crafted with such vivid clarity. I truly finished the series in awe, very satisfied with the ending. A.R. Ivanovich please don't let us wait too long for another amazing series.

The final book is here and it's better than ever. Katelyn, Dylan, Rune, and Kyle aka Prince Varion all face their obstacles in this final battle between the Northern Kingdom and the Western Kingdom. Heartbreaks, devastation, and losses are imminent in order to issue a verdict. I love that an epilogue was added to ensure closure with Carmine and her deeds. I was afraid that amidst the chaos and battles that Carmine would be forgotten and not get her well deserved punishment. This book is a fitting close to a great series.

I'm in grief over the fact that this series is over. I loved this book and series but something about the ending bugs me. It felt like the biggest point of action in this final book was right in the middle and the rest was tying everything up nice and neat, then the end of that epilogue was really random. Really satisfied with how everything turned out though, and the way Ivanovich followed up with every character was a nice touch. I want a Sadie.

It was like one step forward, two steps back for this disappointing ending to the War of Princes series.

My biggest issue with this final novel was that instead of maybe trying to subvert some of the tropes that have been crutches this entire series and making the characters extremely predictable and one-dimensional, the author chose to go all in on the tropes with absolutely no character development or challenging decisions. And then everyone lives happily ever after at the end.

Add to that villainous monologue, plot contrivances, and no real sense of time or scale or real stakes for that matter, and this "epic" war that has been going on for centuries is summed up in a letter at the end and teenage friends making the world a happy place for everyone.

There are details in this final book that make you scratch your head but then you shrug them off because events/people/places have to work that way in order to get to the final boss battle and the author is trying to weave in previously established threads that need to be tied up in a nice YA bow.

Ultimately, this series is forgettable except maybe as a launching point for an author who does have creative ideas, but needs some development to polish those ideas into a more mature execution.

This finale to the series is just as good as its predecessors. Honestly, I think it’s pretty amazing that a four book series could be so consistently well-paced and written—for me there were no parts that dragged in any of the books. As the final book, this one is the big-bang ending, and made me cry more than the others. There are twists and I worried about the fate of characters—after four books you get pretty attached, and they’re so well-rounded and developed at this point you know them warts and all. Sometimes I did stop and think, surely they didn’t make it through _that_, but they’re heroes, and truthfully, right now I really need some heroic characters. I really like Kat and Rune’s relationship because it’s strong and it’s present, but not overwhelming—it doesn’t consume the plot as there is so much more going on, but it’s still important. I really highly recommend this series, and I just have to add that I am so grateful I discovered it _after_ all of the books were out, because I would have gone bonkers waiting for the next one!

That ending! Is this really the end? I hope there is more!

Loved almost everything about this book. The only thing that got me was the ending. While it is a good ending, especially if there will be another book, it kind of felt rushed compared to the other books. But it did leave the story open to continue with another book (hint hint wink wink). Other than the like last two paragraphs it was an awesome book to continue a great series. Plenty of great things and a wonderful job further developing the characters. Just like real life each character continues to use the day to day changes to be a little different from the day before. Great book and really really hope there will be at least one more book in the series future.

Without big plot twists keeping me on the edge of my seat, this turned into a story I liked, but could not devour. All sorts of loose ends are tied up so nice and pretty into a little bow. *gag*

It is very good to finally have answers to all the burning history questions we've been harboring through the first 3 books. Aside from that though... the story unfolded predictably. I'm still glad I read this series. Ms. Ivanovich created a very interesting world, with a rich history, interesting magic system, and fun characters. You can't really ask for too much more than that in a series.

Holy cow!! This was an amazing conclusion to an amazing series!! I laughed, I cried, I cheered, I ached and I loved all of it! I wondered how this was going to end and I feel like this was the perfect wrap-up. There was loss, but there was also happiness. I feel like all lose ends were tied and explained. Perfect!!!! 5 fetching stars from me!! *squeal of delight*

Quite the adventure...

A book that rolls the thunderous excitement of Red Queen with a steampunk medieval feel. I honestly enjoyed reading it more than the Red Queen series. The writing is inventive and quirky at times and will have you gripped until you have read the final heartpounding book. (Although the conclusion was epic, I give it 4 stars because I could have imagined more epic end battle).

I'm so calm right now, I'm freaking myself out. I cried. This is my favorite Steampunk series. I love every thing about the books and of course, their characters. Now I have to say goodbye to all of it, to Kyle, Katelyn, Dylan...and oh my god, Rune Thayer!

description
This series deserves more recognition. I'm shooting gazillion stars
The plot is always well elaborated, the English is puuuurfect and you grow along with the characters. You see the changes in them as they embraced who they really are, let go of pain, moved on and faced their fates.

It has a happy ending but the deaths, the destructions and schemes that was needed to achieve that happy ending were heart-wrecking. I did not want anyone, ANYONE to die. But ahh *sigh*, I've learnt a long time that for a book to be remembered and special, there will be death of someone close or a betrayer. Lastland chose the former and it wasn't just ONE death. I cried so bad when I learn that Rune is sick, then...the ending, ripped my heart and my soul. He shouldn't die, but it makes sense. And I can't believe that I felt pity for Rasarion when Katelyn was reading Varion's letter. Both princes had their fault but if only they talked, nothing would have happened. Cowardice, pride, lies and manipulation got in their ways to be able to reconcile. Hundreds years of war for nothing, for an accident. Holy gravity!

I want to say so much about Katelyn- Beautiful, crazy, brave and badass Lodestone. She deserves her title, hands down. And Dylan, I would be more sad if he died but I feel sad for him, for his loss, and he deserves his title too *Grins* And of course, Rune Thayer, our favorite Dragoon, because of whom the whole story starts. I would rain a thousand hells if something had happen to him. I bawl my eyes out when he was dead and Katelyn was yelling, pounding at his chest. That was the saddest scene I've read this year.

Oh, I even forgot about Carmine, the traitor. I hope she rots. Yeah! I don't pity her at all for causing Rune to be possessed by a Gateline.

description
It's always a bittersweet moment to say goodbye to characters you've being with for years, waiting for the next book and hope they are okay. With a heavy heart, I say goodbye to Rune Thayer, Katelyn Kestrel, Kyle Kiteman aka Varion Argent and Dylan Axton.
Thank you so much A.R. Ivanovich for creating this beautiful world and beautiful characters.

After a devastating attack on the Northern capital, Prince Raserion has taken everything from Katelyn Kestrel . . . everything but her will to fight back and save the people of Haven. Out of the ashes of a burning city, Prince Varion, ruler of the Northern Kingdom, resurfaces, intent on ending the seven-hundred-year war once and for all. But he can’t succeed without Katelyn’s help. She has the powerful ability to find anything she seeks—even the enemy himself, Prince Raserion. While the two armies gather strength for one final showdown, Katelyn finds herself on the frontlines of war, pinned between right and wrong, friend and foe, life and death. With Haven’s fate hanging in the balance, Katelyn’s struggle will not only decide her future, but the future of the broken Kingdom of Lastland.

Lastland was a book that could have gone so many ways - there were so many paths that were possible for this story to take. And for all I imagined, I couldn't predict how good this would be. My worry at the end of Monarch was unsubstantiated. This book delivered more than promised and kept me hanging on each word. The story starts off with Kat chasing down the Western forces to retrieve Rune, and after success, she and Varion team up to take out Raserion for once and for all. The biggest motivator for Kat is, of course, the threat that he poses to Haven and so, even though she doesn't trust Varion entirely, she allies with him to seek peace for her Haven.

The war rages on about the middle of the book and that's where the pace drops. It's all strategy for a while, and was about to start getting boring, when we move towards the main showdown. Kat goes above and beyond her powers, and I was honestly terrified what turn the book would take. The writing painted a very vivid image of war - and when we reach Haven, it goes to newer heights. The ending was, unexpected, to say the least. It was a good resolution to the story and honestly, very well deserved towards our characters. It also settles the world really well, and gives hope for a happily ever after, just slightly marred by remnants of war.

As for this series, it has been a delight. It has been unexpected and surprising, but in a good way. It kept me engaged and hooked, and I have devoured each of them until my eyes hurt from lack of sleep. (Which means it was that awesome) It was such a good start to the year for me, and the world-building, characters, and storyline have been nearly flawless. The romance was also, finally, given it's due - still in the background, but with a better understanding of Rune. Kat is still drawn to wounded people, but perhaps that her real nature - to see the whole of people and kindle hope in them. Just amazing, in short.
