I have learned a few things in my life. If you can’t wear clean underwear, don’t wear any at all. Never trust a vampire. Secret ruling councils should generally be avoided. Finally, and this is the most important, very few people are ever what they seem. However, it wasn’t always easy to live by these rules. Like, when said secret ruling council demanded my appearance and then did the worst thing they could possibly do, inflame my curiosity. Asking me to go to New Orleans to investigate a series of werewolf attacks, I couldn't say no to that. The first problem was werewolves had been eliminated from the Abyss so it was impossible that they were killing anyone. The second fiasco was that more vampires were in this city than ever before, including the one who was intent on ruining my life. And the third complication was I couldn’t tell anyone else about my mission or I would forfeit my freedom to the council. Some missions are easy. Others are a Catastrophe.
Many authors claim to have known their calling from a young age. Liz Schulte, however, didn't always want to be an author. In fact, she had no clue. Liz wanted to be a veterinarian, then she wanted to be a lawyer, then she wanted to be a criminal profiler. In a valiant effort to keep from becoming Walter Mitty, Liz put pen to paper and began writing her first novel. It was at that moment she realized this is what she was meant to do. As a scribe she could be all of those things and so much more.
When Liz isn't writing or on social networks she is inflicting movie quotes and trivia on people, reading, traveling, and hanging out with friends and family. Liz is a Midwest girl through and through, though she would be perfectly happy never having to shovel her driveway again. She has a love for all things spooky, supernatural, and snarky. Her favorite authors range from Edgar Allen Poe to Joseph Heller to Jane Austen to Jim Butcher and everything in between.
It's here! Femi's very own book, and Liz Schulte does not disappoint. She brings back characters we all know and love from her other series while keeping Femi in the forefront. Femi is a powerful character who has deserved to have her own series for a while, and Catastrophe the perfect jumping off point for this series. It is obvious that this is just the tip of the iceberg to what Ms. Schulte has in store for this series. I, for one, can't wait for the next in the series.
Having read fantasy books for as long as I can remember, it's always exciting to find new little pieces of mythology.
The main character is a dependent of Sekmet, an Egyptian goddess of Justice and War. There's a new spin on the loup garou, and jinn make an appearance as well. The storyline wraps itself up nicely, with just enough of a teaser at the end to make me want to pick up the next in the series.
Excellent book. Loved seeing Femi as the center of this book and getting to know more about her. Of course, love how all my other favorite characters of the abyss are woven in to this story as well. Femi is a bad ass female love her!
Fehmi is a bounty hunter that happens to be a direct descendant of Sekmet, a lion headed Goddess. Fehmi has nine lives like a cat, yet in her extremely dangerous career, has yet to lose a single life. This could all change when she is hired by the council to look into a werewolf attack, which is impossible because all the werewolves were dead or locked far away. When she signs the council's contract, she becomes their property and she is going to be put to a test. When she gets from Chicago to New Orleans to pick up the trail of the four previous bounty hunters who have been killed in quick order, she finds herself up to her eyeballs in vampires and a loup-garou killing en masse. Add to the fact that two vamps have the hots for her, and her partner Sy also wants her, she is being stalked by a skinwalker. Will she survive New Orleans, or will she end up in a pretty little crypt?
Femi is not what she seems if you can see her. But her love life is a disaster and she couldn’t care less. She is a bounty hunter who does what is asked of her. This time she is sent on a mission without knowing the details and finds out that everything was a setup from get go one. She was bait for a vampire who is wanted and then she is seeking a killer who is killing indiscriminately. In the meantime she finds out that she is being used by the council who sits over beings like herself. In the end she gets her killer and takes care of her other problem for the council but at what cost tho her own life does it take in the end.
This was a...frustrating read. It was hard to read past Femi's lack of good sense sometimes. But one thing made this book a three star. That. Ending.
I. Fucking. Love. That. Ending. Why is it that all the good sense seems to be hoarded by the opposite sex in Femi's Universe? 😩
But you know what? I'm willing to torture myself with the second book if I'll get to see said male in the ending getting his very own HEA. Femi can just...continue being the same, I guess. Since she just wants everything and everyone to...never change.
I picked this up after not reading any of the other books. This book as an introduction to a whole series didn't really impress upon me the importance of any of the characters.
I had no reason to love any of them.
It's not like there were whole back stories that I should have known about before reading.
Therefore, this book just felt like a whole bunch of people in a scene doing a whole bunch of separate things.
A very interesting book! Demi is trying to solve a mystery for the council. Sy, Holden, Corben and Thomas are individuals who play a part in this mystery. This is an excellent story with plenty of twists but is not a read alone book. Because there a characters mention and interactions with them , you will find gaps that will not make sense to you. An excellent story otherwise which you will enjoy for the solutions to the mystery and other plots.
I liked it. It was fast paced and I the characters were well done. They played so well with each other and seemed to have such a history together already built up I thought maybe I was missing a book. There were a few editing misses but nothing that made me unable to follow the storyline. I will definitely be picking up the next book in the series and in my opinion Catastrophe is recommended.
I just love the books on the Abyss - Love Femi her character is just tough but sensitive. Can't wait to get to the next book on Femi. I have read each book of the Abyss in order and get sad when I finish one until I pick up the next one. I will truly sad when I get to the very last book.
I enjoyed the story and am looking forward to reading the second installment but I gave only 4 stars because I felt the main character had some holes. She's awesome, no doubt, but didn't live up to the hype given in the introductory details.
I liked the book but it was nothing exceptional. Very confusing with the vampires, Amos and many unexpected twists and turns. Also, the skinwalkers identity caught me by surpride.
Loved the characters and the story. Lots of supernatural characters in it. Love snarky heroines with soft hearts. Looking forward to reading more books by this author.
It doesn't cover much in the way of new ground, aside from a heroine who is somewhat unusual from the usual UF wizards and witches. Femi is a Sekhmet--a descendant of the Egyptian warrior goddess Sekhmet.

I didn't really see much in the way of her abilities reflecting her lineage, but I loved how true she was to her cat-like curiosity throughout the entirety of the story. Some things were repeated a little often, such as the info about her extra lives and yes, we get it, she's a Sekhmet--but she had a spunky personality that she stayed true to throughout the book.
That doesn't forgive her very foolish actions in the beginning of the story (signing a contract to solve a case you know nothing about with dire consequences for some very major things--like going to your other supernatural buddies for help--is far too TSTL in my opinion) or some characters acting in a way that doesn't fit their profession (I don't buy Detective Dempsey ignoring the blood so early in their relationship) but it still kept me engaged and wanting to know more.
One thing I really wish had been given more personality was the setting where the bulk of the story took place. I love New Orleans with a passion and with urban fantasy in particular, it's often important to make the setting as much a part of the story as the characters. Much of the time, when they were in the city, it honestly felt like it could have been Anycity, USA. The swamp scenes were described just fine, but specifically when they were in town, I didn't get much of a NOLA feel.
Also, Femi's continued attraction to and trust in Thomas made no sense to me. Aside from the little gaffe in the beginning, she seemed like a reasonable woman. Considering everything else going on, there were some things later in the story that really didn't make much sense but I suppose had to be done to further the plot since three people snarking at each other in a confined space can only be entertaining for so long, I'm guessing.
My last nit about this is that it could have used a closer eye on the editing. There were few typos, but there were three or four times where something in the sentence structure was out of place, like an incomplete or changed thought that got twisted around into something meaningless or was apropos of nothing. Also, a phone call was made to Corbin when he was at a location where he should not have had cell service according to a statement made earlier. The little things...
That didn't kill the experience for me. This book was just what I needed when I read it, and even though it's clearly making nods to things that happen in other books from other some other series by this author, there is enough information not to get lost along the way. If anything, it intrigued me enough to want to look into the other books by this author.
I don't want to ruin it, but if you can turn your brain off and enjoy the action, it's a fun ride with a great twist. I liked it a lot, and I recommend it if you're looking for some action, snark, adventure, and a few chuckles along the way.
I loved this book and I couldn't put it down. I thought the heroine was very interesting and all of the other characters were too. Finally, something completely different than most paranormal urban fantasy books. I can't wait to read more from the series this series!!
First I must say that even though this is the first part of the Sekhmet Series, it is a spin off from the world of Liz Schulte. I like that Ms. Schulte doesn’t rehash the previous books and disrupt the story of this one. I have read her other books and thoroughly enjoy the world that she has created.
Femi is a wonderful character, she has depth, backbone, insecurities and attitude issues. She likes to know the “why” of each bounty not just how it is done. Femi does have a serious commitment issues. I am not sure if it is just a Sekhmet thing or just that she is afraid to lose someone she cares deeply for or she just hasn't found that special person. Everyone has their own inner demons and reasons for being who they are. Femi is a warrior with tons of emotion and she cares way more than a Sekhmet should. Sekhmet are neutral in nature, but Femi has a hard time not helping the underdog/little guy.
Femi is extremely curious about the Abyss council. When they assign her a bounty in New Orleans, (ok they actually gloated her into taking the job). You know the ole’ greater good angle, either way Femi won’t back down and she can’t have unanswered questions if at all possible. Whenever the greater good plays in there is always a catastrophe on the horizon.
As for the Liz Schulte’s world of the Abyss, I love it. You have the humans who don’t see the other creatures walking among them, and you have the Abyss creatures. The Abyss creatures are wonderful and as with humans some are good, some are bad, and some are a little of both.
I think I truly like the mysteries that Ms. Schulte uses in each story, she keeps me guessing and manages to toss in that little bit to make me question if the one I picked is the bad guy (or should I say main bad guy). You really never know how many angles are being played until the story plays out. However, I like the way she wraps it up, with a kind of happy ending.
She also has that little bit of romance that keeps you coming back. As for Femi and Sy, I like the flirting and the way they protect each other, but I hope that there is a person that is truly for Femi. Someone who will compliment her and become the partner that she truly needs. If Sy is this person than that is great if not, I can't wait to see who or what Ms. Schulte can imagine.
So, if you haven’t already read Liz Schulte’s Easy Bake Coven series, The Guardian Trilogy, or The Jinn Trilogy, you might want to look into these. She also has a few short stories that go with her world of the Abyss. My rating is 5 stars.

I found this book through an e-mail list (Choosy Bookworm) and from the synopsis, it looked intriguing. I love Paranormal books. Some are hard to capture my interest, as they seem to be either too dark, too violent, or too racy, but, this one just sucked me in. Pardon the pun. This book had the perfect balance of light and dark, which I appreciated greatly! And what's better than a book? A book that is free! At least on Kindle, or for me, Kindle Cloud Reader so I can read it on my laptop (bigger screen, bigger letters, and no eye strain for the win! And did I mention it was free?).
I really enjoyed the story. It kept me reading and not wanting to put it down (read: late, late, nights, or really early mornings if you want to be technical). The mystery was good and kept things moving along. When you think you have got it, the author moves in another direction, taking you along for a fun ride. I can also see the setup for the next book in the series, which I am looking forward to reading.
We all know that Vampires and Werewolves have been done to death. Ha, yet another pun. Whoops! But, I enjoyed how the author included other paranormal races, especially ones that I wasn’t used to (Sekhmet), which encouraged me to research something new, and learning about something new is always cool.
Now, if I liked it so much, why did I give it only 4 stars? Well, that is because I found several editorial mistakes. I always thought that there were editors that went through the books first (before they are published) for not just fact checking and plot progression, but also for typos, wrong words, extra words, wrong tense of words, etc… But, maybe they don’t if they are put out on Kindle. Not sure. Not my area of expertise. But, I found them very distracting. That’s just me. You might be able to read right over it and it not bother you.
Anyhow… If you like paranormal mystery books that are a quick fun read, I think you’ll enjoy this book. I’m looking forward to more of Liz Shulte books, not just in this series, but others as well. Especially if these characters are in other books of hers! I had a fun adventure with Femi, Sy, Holden, and the rest and would love to adventure with them some more!
This book was okay. I wanted to love it more then I did. I liked the characters a lot. I just felt the plot was thin and although this was said to be book 1, it constantly referenced other books and characters. About a third of the way through I realized I had read some of the previous books and knew aome of the characters that they referenced. While I was able to read the book as a stand alone it was very annoying how they mentioned characters or events like I should know who they are. I did go to the authors web page and her order of reading her novels has this listed as book 18. So yeah I was missing a huge piece of the puzzle. I read three of her books about three years ago and had a vague recollection of some character names but that was it. This book focused on a bounty hunter who was sent on a mission to New Orleans to find out who or what is killing a bunch of magical beings down there. I thought it waa going to be a standard mystery with maybe a little sex thrown in, and instead it was a bumch of convoluted plot twists involving things and characters and situations from books I hadn't read.
What I did like were the characters. I'm interested enough to maybe try and start the series from the true beginning to see if it grows on me. So I'm going to reread the ones Ive read and go from there.
Femi is a bounty hunter and a Sekhmet, a race blessed by the Egyptian Goddess of Death. She hasn't always made the best choices, but signing the contract with the council was definitely not a good one. She flies to New Orleans to investigate what she's told is a series of werewolf attacks, but it was something much more convoluted than that. The problem is she's not allowed to tell anyone about her mission. Femi isn't against bending the rules, though. But not even that may save one of her nine lives.
This is the first book by Liz Schulte I've read, and I had so much fun. At first, I felt thrown into this world where there seemed like so much had happened and I had no clue what all the relationships were about. Yet as the story progressed, I learned about Femi and her friends and enemies. There was many layers to it all, but I loved exploring. Solid world building and a twisty plot. Just the way I like it! I definitely will pick up more from Liz Schulte and explore more in this fantastic urban fantasy world.
You get what you pay for and this book was free. I'm glad that it was . . . and yet I'd be so happy to pay for Schultz's Abyss novels if she'd find a good editor. There are parts that are repetitive or too explicit and more parts that are too unclear or require more memory of earlier novels than I retain. But there are also big problems with the language. Good storytelling and good grammar are not the same, but it's distracting to read "different as" instead of "different from" (or "different to" in British Lit). "Besides for" instead of "Besides." "Comprised of" instead of "Comprised" or "Composed of," awkward verb tenses, strange word usages, etc. And people speak in contractions! This is the value of traditional publishing. I'd love to see what a good editor could do for this whole series.
There were only a few cons for me. The first one being that it definitely needs some editing. A few misplaced quotations, a few sentences that are not finished or misplaced words. I was able to look past that, but others might not be able to. Also, I wish I would have known this was a spinoff from other books. I was so confused about who certain people were, that she off handedly mentioned. Im still confused about Baker, but everyone else kind of fell into place. On the other hand, I did like that there wasn't a lot of distraction from the current story and it makes me want to check out her other books.
This was a fun read! Not your typical vampire/werewolf/paranormal storyline. I enjoyed the characters. Lots of adventure. Fun, strong, sassy heroine. A little bit of romance.
Biggest complaint/issue?? Even though this is book one of the Sekhmet series, it is book 19 in the Abyss series. This would have been good to know before purchasing. While this is a standalone book, it mentions events from pervious books in the series. It made it hard to figure out why certain characters had relationships with each other, why there was animosity or trust, etc.
Overall a great read... now to start at book 1 of the Abyss.
Femi is a Sekhmet warrior and bounty hunter. She has been sent to New Orleans to catch the miscreants that are killing the bounty hunters. The cast of characters in this tale are very imaginative and well-written. Almost every realm of the paranormal characterizations are here from vampires to Jinn to Dragon and more in between. Adult readers due violence.
OMG! What a thrill ride this book was! I really enjoyed reading a book about a different paranormal person. Not only does she have nine lives but she is a badass as well! Like her ancestors she quickly picked up on something being forced about the crime scenes. Enter some good and bad guys (none of whom you can figure out!), great fight scenes and a little mystery to be solved and I cannot wait to read the next book!
I truly enjoyed this urban fantasy world. The heroine has great depth and kick some serious ass. If that's not enough talk about having commitment and attitude issues. Yes, she is my warrior plus a bounty hunter. There was many layers to the story and wonderful twist plot. I love a story with the heroine fighting for the underdog.
