You asked for it, so here it is: an ILLUSTRATED Legend of ZERO story!
BLURB: A rogue Trith is out to start a war, and only one bug can bring him down. In this Legend of ZERO novella, Joe Dobbs' eccentric, ceiling-lurking groundmate Flea teams up with Forgotten to stop a Trith from killing his friends. The task, however, is harder than it sounds--often because of Flea's own dubious choices. Will Flea succeed in defying all odds and ending the Trith's reign of terror, or will he end up spitting on one too many bad guys with guns? Will he balk in the face of danger, or will he become FLEA, AGENT OF CHAOS?! You get to decide...
Author's Note: This story was written AND illustrated in 14 days. (14 sleepless, zombie-shuffling, caffeine-powered days). Lance and I wrote and illustrated it for fans of The Legend of ZERO who wanted to donate money to help with the repurchase of the rights to Outer Bounds because we felt we needed to create something fun and entertaining in return for their amazing support. Flea, Agent of Chaos is shorter than the standard ZERO novels (about 60,000 words) but contains over 45 different images detailing Flea's crazy misadventures, with a link to the wallpaper-sized images in the back of the book, in case you fall in love with a particular scene. It's fun, snarky, and you'll probably find yourself reading it several times before you can put it down. Thanks again, and please enjoy the mindscrew you are about to endure. :)
WARNING: THIS IS NOT BOOK 4 OF THE LEGEND OF ZERO SERIES. The Misadventures of Flea, Agent of Chaos is a mind-bendingly complex stand-alone novella featuring the Baga character of Flea from ZERO 2. It contains lots of hints as to what's to come in ZERO 4, so it is best read after Book 2, but before Book 4. It is best classified as ZERO 3.5, but since the publishing system doesn't recognize decimal places, it is ZERO4. :)
After a long, twisted road, Alaskan Fury is my 15th book. The rest (aside from the first five or so ‘practice books’) spent the last 3-6 years languishing on my hard drive as I waited for some really cool editor at a big, traditional publishing house to notice me. It didn’t happen, even with a world-famous agent doing his damnedest to get my books out there.
So, because I’ve got a stubborn streak a mile wide—and some say because I’m a naïve, dumbass Alaskan—I’m striking out on my own and putting my books out there. Basically casting my dice to the Fates, and seeing what happens. If you like my books, please tell your friends. I don’t have a huge advertising team behind me, so word-of-mouth really helps.
On that note, my books never went through a copyeditor. What you see is the result of a few dedicated volunteers, all of whom have poured untold hours into the crafting of the book in your hands. They are awesome, steeped in awesome, sprinkled with awesome. Thanks, guys!
Further, I write fast. I can easily write 6 novels a year—8 if I don’t get distracted—and during those long years waiting for somebody to notice me, I was finding myself in the extremely frustrating position of watching my manuscripts pile up because traditional publishing companies can only take 1 or 2 novels by a single author a year. Keep an eye out for a bunch of new books from yours truly, as I've finally got an outlet for all that creative drive. :) Enjoy!
This was an amusing story before delving into book 4 of the Legend of Zero series. It was a fun, clever and entertaining interlude for those that are into this series.
The best "chose your own adventure" book ever written ! Totally crazy, hilarious, a must read for Zero's universe fans. The Pepsi artefact is great. I want one !
Well now. Where to begin. The title: truly inspired. I makes me laugh and intrigues me each time I think about it. “The Many Misadventures of Flea, Agent of Chaos”. Don’t let the ‘novella’ moniker put you off; this is a thing of beauty, perfectly crafted. It is quite different from the other books in the series (which I also consumed with relish. Not literally. No savoury jam spread on my e-reader. No, reading them was a compulsion, in the ‘had to keep reading even though I had work in 3 hours’ kind of way.) and although each has its charms, “The Many Misadventures of Flea, Agent of Chaos” (chuckle) is my favourite. This nugget of joy is a multi-choice gift. At the end of each chapter, you can choose out of three options, as can Flea when he uses the device given to him to help him a) make decisions and b) understand numbers more than 7. Some of the images conjured by the latter are hilarious. But I digress. It took me a while to realise that the highlighted choices for Flea are also choices for the reader and I was annoyed with myself that I’d have to go back and go through each one to get the most out of the book. Oh, but it was so worth it. I cannot get my head around how Ms King crafted the stories as she has, but the result is sheer genius. No hyperbole. Brilliance. How she did it in 14 days is mind-boggling. You come to the same junctures eventually, but using a variety of entertaining routes. Flea’s Ground Team keeps him in check, as much as that is possible, by presenting their operations as a LARP, wherein mission objectives gain game points (earnings) for style and success. So that is how Flea approaches missions, as a game in which he gains points/ funds for flamboyance and outcomes. This is made even funnier by the fact that Baga (his species) usually cannot count beyond six and have no concept of larger numbers, so his estimates of his ‘earnings’ are hilarious. Flea loves to gamble, often with disastrous results, again tying in with the multi-choice theme. A recurring choice is, Flea Spits. Because Spitting Is Fun. Flea’s like a naughty but dangerous kid who does things Because They Are Fun, Just To See What Happens, even though the kid knows the consequences are likely to be unpleasant. Not fun for others to deal with but hilarious to watch in action. And so it is with Flea. His Misadventures -although he does not think of them as such, not usually anyway- are engaging, funny, surprising, and indeed chaotic. I couldn’t wait to see what mischief he would get up to next, what trouble he’d get himself into, how he would emerge triumphant. I Read. Because Reading About Flea, Agent of Chaos, Is Fun.
This book is quite a fun ride, it really goes off the way to be different than previous books with a multiple choice scheme (a la Chose Your Own Adventure) but baked in such a way that it feels quite natural and makes an excellent match with Flea's personality.
The story in itself is a side adventure but it sets apart some main characters that I feel are or will be important like the female baga Click. Rat participation sets some precedents too and the D&D references are fun and functional, so much so that it makes understanding the mind of the Baga a little easier (being they usually don't take things too seriously).
Overall a fun an excellent read while waiting for the next Legend of ZERO book! :)
Sara King is a monster talent. So far I've given her ZERO books five stars (with one volume yet to be read). This volume is the first interactive ebook I have read and I found it frustrating and awesome at the same time---make the wrong choice and you might get sent backwards in your page count by a huge amount, with no way to jump back. Ms. King must be a slave to her imagination to churn out so many books. But be fore warned there is nothing lady-like about her writing, she's as tough as they come. And humorous, to boot. What a great combination!
Maybe I'm too old for this style of book. It's written with links to multiple outcomes so you can skip all over the place tracking down the story or maybe just customizing the story based on your choices. But my brain is too linear for that. I don't like choice when I read a book. I like narrative that goes steadily along from beginning to end. So while I suppose this is quite creative, it's also a pain in the neck to read. Normally I thoroughly enjoy Sara King's work, but this time I have to make an exception.
Gotta love a book that stars Flea. The book is a bit of a chaotic read as you are given options as to what decisions Flea may make. Even as I reached the end of the book, I wasn't totally certain that I was at the end of the book. I am now digging through all of the alternatives, just to make sure that I dug out every Flea gem.
Finished September 17, 2017. Readability 6. Rating 5. I will take it for what it is - a bit of a throw away tale, intended for fans to get a little Flea fix and have fun with the flexibility of ebooks and the limitations of the Baga mind (with Forgotten thrown in to spice things up). Good enough.
This edition is not nearly as good as previous Books. Or, Just not written in the style I prefer Options are presented to the reader as to how the story should proceed versus A straight forward writing with the out come pre determined by the author. Not enjoyable to me.
If you've read the first three (or four?) Zero books proceed! Fun and funny. If you have not read at least 2 Zero books, STOP. Find them and read them first!
I enjoy Sara King's writing and found this book reasonably entertaining. I didn't particularly enjoy the "create your own adventure" aspect of it, although at least it worked gracefully on my kindle.
I thought I wouldn't enjoy this book because of the choices involved, but I was thoroughly entertained. Flea escapades as rhe agent of chaos are delightful. Full of adventure and laughs. Avery good read.
The book is mainly about flea and his device that allows him to see 3 options into the future. I can say seeing him use spit all the time drove me crazy by the halfway point. I finally just scrolled to the end and moved on to the next book.
I do not think I have ever called a book cute in a review, but it applies here. If you are a fan of the Legend of ZERO series, you will enjoy this! 3.5 stars.
Interesting adding choices and reading the consequences throughout. Enjoyed flea's adventures, had a few laughs reading to the end of the consequences.
This is what happens when you crap excellence. Apparently this whole project came together in two weeks, but it's as good or better than the majority of what you see out there these days. Sure, I found at least two typos, and certainly some parts of the story are probably revealing too much about whatever's coming in the next book, or could have been fine tuned to squeeze a little more emotion here or there. Overall the story feels short, like an introduction or a space-filler, but that's exactly what this is. King needed to raise money to buy back the rights for one of her other series, so she rushed this story together. That doesn't mean it's not an enjoyable little adventure.
Speaking of adventures, I was amused to find that this was a nicely functional choose-your-own-adventure story, which fit in perfectly with the plot in a number of ways. I always hated cyoa books as a kid, probably because of my inability to keep track of where I was, and compulsive need to go back and change my mind after every few decisions. This book manages to make all that pretty easy.
This is a choose-your-own adventure story about a very funny military recruit who happens to look like a large bug. He's a nearly indestructible, self-proclaimed agent of chaos with a short attention span and no comprehension of numbers about 6. He's also obsessed with dungeons and dragons. He gets sent on a mission to a mining colony with only a small chance of success. His failures are epic and funny and usually fatal, but if you make it to the right end, he does win in the end. I don't like the Legend of ZERO series, but I still loved this book, and I was happy to buy it to help the author fund her buy-back of another series.
The book is special project for fans of ZERO and Outer Bounds, created in limited time. We get an adventure of Flea, funny Baga from Zero's ground team. Flea is a true agent of chaos wherever he goes and whatever he does. The additions in book format allows us more to feel like we're adventuring with the Flea.
This book was written quickly and is not fully polished, but the story is very entertaining and Flea is one of my favorite Sara King characters. If you are new to her work, start with the first "Zero" novel, and come back later to read this one. You will be glad you did!
As a fan of the Legend of ZERO series, this book had me laughing out loud repeatedly. I loved reading an adult-sized (400+ pages, I believe) choose-your-own-adventure book, and I am amazed that the author wrote it in 14 days.
Spit on him because spitting is fun! A very unconventional reading. Sara King make her aliens feel like humans. Very eccentric humans wich keep you reading on and on. A very good humorous book to read t Sunday's afternoon
Sara King is incredibly talented and is one of my favorite authors working today. She is truly worth your time. That being said, this effort was fun, enjoyable, and delved into a side character from the Zero series. I loved it.
