Yiloch, the newly crowned Emperor of Lyra, stands accused of arranging the assassination of the Caithin royal family. Torn between love for Yiloch and her close ties with the royal family, Indigo wants nothing more than to prove the accusation false, but the evidence puts the blood of the family on his hands.

Trying to protect the Lyran prince from the swift descent of Caithin justice, Indigo exposes the workings of an enemy who is willing to kill to protect his secrets. In desperation, she unleashes magic that sends Yiloch deep into the desert of Kudan before fleeing for her life. She must find him again to save his life as well as her own.

Betrayed by ally and by love, stranded by uncontrollable magic, Yiloch struggles to make his way back to the Lyran capital before Caithin can declare war, but standing between him and his empire is a lethal new enemy, wielding magic unlike anything his people have faced before.

Back in Caithin, Indigo continues training with Serivar and the Order. She is starting to find her place again when Yiloch is accused of the murder of the King. She knows he didn’t do it, right? In a desperate attempt to protect him from those who wish him dead, she strands Yiloch in a desert South of Lyra. Not only does Caithin want Yiloch to answer for his crimes, but a new enemy marches on Lyra.

It has been quite some time since I read such a strong middle book in a trilogy. It was just as exciting as reading the first book in the series. It held up the action and continued to endear me to the characters I’d grown to know and love in the first book.

I really appreciated the different perspectives of the characters as different chapters are told by these different narrators, even from the perspective of the invading enemies.

This sequel starts out slow, building about halfway through. While Indigo comes up against demons from her past, Yiloch faces his future. There was less interaction than I hoped to see from the main characters. It felt like this story was foreshadowing for the third installment. Overall I enjoyed finding out how their stories progressed, but as a standalone there's not enough here to justify as a sequel. We are introduced to a new promising antagonist towards the end, so hopefully it will all come crashing together in the final book!

It has been a while since I've enjoyed a fantasy fiction novel as much as the Forbidden Things series - well, since last year anyway when I really enjoyed The Shards of History series by Rebecca Roland. Forbidden Things is more traditional fantasy fiction - castles and swords and brave men on gallant steeds - with magic. Lots and lots of magic. Indigo, however, the heroine, isn't your usual high society lady or your usual fawning princess or your usual magical person for that matter. She's strong, mysterious, independent and super, UBER powerful all while moving through the world with grace and a genteel (at least on outside appearances) manner.

Exile is book two of the Forbidden Things series. Scroll down below the giveaway for the publisher's description of Book One - Dissident. I think the author did a fine job of making Exile stand alone and catching the reader up to important bits of backstory from Dissident, but Dissident was so good, just do yourself a favor and read it as well. Life has still not settled down for Indigo. She longs to finish her training as a healer and move away from Demin where she can fade into the background and live a (mostly) anonymous life. But the war seems far from over when the Caithin royal family is murdered and the man she helped bring to power in Lyra (the same man who holds her heart) stands accused of the crime!

Exile is again told from multiple perspectives, like Dissident. The author handles this well and I appreciated being privy to the inner monologue of the complex characters in her world. There is the occasional frustration when you so wish one character could just know what the other was thinking! Especially when betrayals are revealed and surprises discovered. Of course, it doesn't work that way but Ms. McCormack keeps it clear on who the narrator is so the reader can easily follow along. I certainly hope there will be more in the Forbidden Things series and I plan to read the author's clockwork cat books soon as well.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions shared are 100% my own.
