This was good, although it felt less like a story than like a bridge to the next chapter. A lot of backstory filled in, and then at the end the introduction of a new character.
I wasn't expecting in volume 1 for Takumi to a supportive secondary character; I thought he was going to be one of the antagonists. And Maria isn't as sympathetic as he seemed at the start, either. Hydra could turn out to have any intentions...
A 2.5 read rounded up because a) it's been years since I read the first 2 books b) the art is lovely. That said this was a confusing info dump of a volume (It does not help one character is Mary and the other Maria and both are male)
Mary, a vampire wants to die after spending the past 400 years trying to find someone capable of ending him. He thinks Maria can do it but Maria doesn’t know how to kill vampires. Because Maria attracts vampires Mary looks after him. In the meantime, Maria’s father, Yusei, was killed by vampires which might have been Maria's fault.
It's hard to tell with the faulty memories and slipshod way this was written. Then you add in duel personalities in one mentally disturbed mind and you get a mishmash of ideas that honestly didn't make me want to get the next volume. I think this is where my journey ends with this one.
So much happened in this volume... One, we get the motives of creepy grandpa Yzak which goes from adorable to sad to twisted and he's pulling grandpa Sakuraba along with him. Two, we finally get a glimpse at Bloody's secret and why he hates being called Mary. (It's a doozy.) Three...NONE OF THAT EXPLAINS HARDLY ANYTHING!
Romance update: Ichiro and Bloody hit a very bad rough patch and there's an angsty scene in the rain. But there's still not a lot of 'romance' for these two. So far, most of the romance seems to be saved for the other characters.
Side note, I love Hasegawa. He's stoic and doesn't say much so he has these little explanations of his thoughts written above his head. It makes it look like he's speaking about himself in the third person and I find it hilarious.
So this will be a review of the first three volumes. I thought it would be better than doing individually.
This is an okay series. I was tempted into buying it because I'm starting to lean back into vampires. The art is gorgeous and the characters are great. The story is interesting, though...I kinda feel like I may have already pinned down some later plot twists. I'm confused as to why people said it takes 3 volumes for it to kick off? Because things start happening as early as the end of the first volume. Idk if I'll continue this series though. I'm tempted to, because it's only 10 volumes all together, but it's just not holding me. I feel like I would have enjoyed this way more during my middle or high school years. Also, the volumes are somewhat thin and I'm not a fan of it.
A bit of information was revealed about Bloody after he got sick and a lot was revealed about Maria’s grandfather: Issac’s backstory in this volume. Curious to see what this new guy wants with Mary so I’ll very much be reading the next volume.
I do find myself liking this series more and more as the series progresses, but I still can't bring myself to call it 4 star worthy. Even so, this was a good one. I'm really getting more attached to the characters and I feel like at this point, the world around them and who they are and why they are who they are is becoming more established and easier to understand. Not only that, but Yzak's love story with the Sakuraba girl...was a little story I'm going to treasure. That was just absolutely beautiful. Though... Where did the child come from? And where did her body go? I'm really confused and slightly concerned. There sure are a handful more of suicidal people in this than in any normal story though, and the whole premise basically revolves around suicide at this point. Which I kinda vibe with, by the way. Wanting to just die so badly... that's something I've struggled with for years. Bloody's attempts at killing himself time and again and failing time and again, I can also relate to that, haha. I don't know if I'm supposed to find it comical, but from my own experiences, that's how I'm taking it and enjoying it. And... I'm a little confused... It looks like 400 years ago, Bloody and Mary were twins, but that's not the case, seems they weren't related by blood at all but rather very close friends. So, then, why..? Why do they share the same body now? Could it be that Bloody was so frail that Mary took him into his own body when he died or something? I just, I'm so confused. Whaaat isss happenningggg And now we have another, perhaps, exorcist??? Sooo confused... I wonder if he's blessed/cursed then too, he seems to be. I guess I'll find out soon, won't I? Oh, yes, and it's nice that Takumi is like, part of the family now, haha. I'm glad he chose to follow his heart and be the big brother to his friend, seems he overcame a lot of the brainwashing, but I'm sure he could still fall subject to it at any point. Oh, oh, and very importantly, yes, yes, BLOODY AND ICHIRO SHARED A BED~~. I kinda wanted to see them snuggle, but you know, laying side by side, hip to hip is good enough, ye~? I hope they get closer... I hope that it doesn't remain some sort of caring for yet still hating type of relationship... Please care for each other... Wait. Oh, wait, Bloody already does. He saw Ichiro get stabbed and it was so emotional for him that Bloody's personality was forced to the surface and pushed Mary's personality back down. But does Ichiro care just as much..? I hope so... Maybe he's blinded by his hatred for Mary too much to see that he cares for Bloody...
Ok, now I'm really invested. Vol. 3 goes into a lot of the backstory, which is really essential at this point. We see that Bloody and an unknown person briefly met Yzak 400 years ago when he was still a young priest starting out in his exorcism business.
Turns out that Yzak needs Bloody to kill him since he is the only vampire who has that ability. The di Maria blood is incredibly strong, and vampires typically can't hurt them. Yzak has been immortal for far too long, and since the death of his wife, he has been looking for ways to die, too.
Yzak attempts to torture Bloody to force him into killing him, but what it does instead is to draw out another personality, that of Mary. Mary, unlike Bloody, is mean-spirited and hell-bent on killing humans. In fact, it's said that he killed Ichiro's father, Yuusei (although the how and why is all very nebulous for now).
So to recap, 1. Bloody is immortal and wants to die, but only Ichiro has the power to kill him. 2. Ichiro can't kill him until he gets his exorcism power back. 3. Yzak is also immortal and also wants to die. Mary is the only who can kill him. 4. To get to Mary, you have to supress Bloody, but that can't be done so easily because of his bond with Ichiro and his promise to protect him. 5. Mary can't kill Yzak because Bloody won't let him. This is because Yzak is the only one who can awaken Ichiro's powers.
In a nutshell, we've reached an impasse. Something obviously has to give, but for now, the three characters are locked in a stalemate.
Meanwhile, a new character appears at the end of the last chapter. He seems to know Ichiro, but we don't know yet in what capacity or if he's one of the good guys or a new antagonist.
This volume felt a little bit more chaotic then the last volume, I really think it’s the info dumps and then immediately trying to decipher what that means. Like in here they found out that Mary or Bloody has another personality, which is fine but like I feel like that just complicates the hell out of the story. So bloody who we see as the red haired vampire for most of the story has a split personality named Mary, who is out there causing so much drama and problems, but bloody doesn’t know about Mary, but Mary knows about bloody. Maria or Ichigo whatever u wanna call him, thinks Mary killed his father but knows bloody didn’t. No hate but this is a lot, then we have Yzak who is somehow immortal, and wants Mary to kill him, then we have Hydra or something, and she only wants Mary to come back, cuz of some promise or something. Also another point of Maria not being able to exorcise vampires and Yzak being the one to put that curse on him and he’s the only one who can lift it, but he’s in some type of coma rn. This volume is so fucking messy. I also don’t know how to feel about the DID mention as it plays a huge factor on why Bloody acts the way he does. Also in Bloody’s dream nightmare thing he had, it’s a memory of two kids, so how does that work is what I’m asking. Also I really thought the vampire that killed Maria’s father would’ve been a completely different person, I know u can just cut your hair and such but it’s weird.

After Yzak (the Immortal Maria) tortures Bloody Mary, Mary seems to turn into a very different vampire. Turns out there's a Bloody, who is very sweet and amnesiac, and there's Mary, who is cruel and killed Yzak's son. Maria isn't sure he can trust Bloody, and decides to visit Hydra (the female vampire) alone. She wants to somehow kill Mary without killing Bloody. But others do not want Maria to learn the power of exorcism.
There were some really cute moments in this volume, when Bloody gets sick tailing Maria in the rain during his visit to Hydra, and Maria takes care of him. If only Maria would stop being so cruel most of the time! Takumi is a mysterious character and I can't quite figure out what side he's on. I also don't trust Hydra completely.
I was really happy to learn about some of Yzak's story and it helped a lot to understand Ichiro a little better. There's a whole lot more dark history in this family than I originally thought. The Sakuraba family has a daunting task ahead of them.
I'm still really suspicious of Hydra, as it feels like she could turn on them at any moment. However, I would like to know more about her backstory at some point as well.
For someone who is supposed to be a priest Ichiro can be pretty cold sometimes towards even those he considers friends. I hope that he continues to be nicer to Mary - I can't help but feel bad for this lonely, suicidal vampire child.
Satisfying follow up to the events of the previous volume. There's still not too many answers, but I'm starting to develop some theories.
I liked how soft the last chapter ended up being, with Bloody recovering from his cold (vampires get colds??) in Maria's bed while Maria reads next to him. Very cute, I wonder how their relationship will develop!

Multiple personalities inside one body - that are polar opposites on top of it. And a blood thirsty vampire. An exorcist without the ability to exorcise demons with an interesting past.
And then they team up. This is pretty cool honestly.
*flips table* *run out of the house to buy the whole series*
Ok dude, but that cliff hanger tho. Also I just did some resear and appearently this manga is not bl?That's too bad,but it's ok they boys are in love in my fantasy anyway.
Things have picked up and we're finally getting some background but... I'm getting worried that this is beginning to travel down that predictable path that most mangas of this nature do. I suppose I'll keep reading for now...
This volume answered a lot of questions, but it also introduced a new character who is looking for Maria. The question is which Maria? I really need to get the rest of the series.
