The machinations grow more complex.
And apparently Mary isn't the only one with missing memories...

So I remember enjoying the first one well enough, but reading volume 2, I honestly don't know why. I think volume 1 had a few more laughs and rolled with its own irony, whereas volume 2 is trying to go darker and more serious.

It could just be that the novelty has worn off and I'm just not seeing as much in here.

Okay, this volume went from spooky to creepy real fast with that weird mind control magic mumbo-jumbo and the mad science experiment stuff. But, Ichiro's motives for gaining the power of exorcism are revealed and everything points to Bloody as the main target for more than one agenda.

On the (supposed) romance note: Ichiro seems very possessive of Bloody despite the cold, business only dynamic of their relationship. So... maybe a growing romance?

This series has 10 volumes.

Bloody Mary Volume 1 was, admittedly, a confused jumble of ideas that were pretty hard to follow. With Volume 2, we're given more clarity about these guys who have female names (Maria, Mary), making the story start to make a lot more sense. I'm still not sure where mangaka Samamiya is going to take the plot after 8 chapters but this still does remain a beautifully drawn series.

Story: Maria is blissfully unaware that his best friend Takumi harbors an immortal in his basement - an immortal vampire hunter claiming to be Maria's grandfather. When Takumi is ordered to bring Bloody Mary in to his laboratory, Maria isn't going to forgive him that betrayal, And he'll bring his own army of vampires to free Mary from his grandfather's torture.

Takumi is being set up to be a tragic character - with no free will under the command of Isaac and hopelessly entangled with the Di Maria family for generations. He had the most interest arc (and certainly was the main character) in this Volume. Isaac is shaping up to be the villain of the piece, tormenting all three characters from his immortal madness.

This is looking to have a lot of the angst of the latter arc of Vampire Knight. I'm curious to see where it will go from here. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

I'm in the worst reading slump ever! I've not even been listening to my audiobook!

The fact that I actually picked this up is a miracle even tho it's just a manga volume.

Anyway, this one was also a re-read, even tho I actually didn't really remember some things. This is getting interesting tho.

I love how Maria is a self-centered jerk, even tho I don't think that's 100% genuine or that it will last much longer, specially with Mary around. By the way, Mary is a precious sweetheart that needs to be protected <3

Next volume only the first chapter is a re-read for me, the rest is new so that's exciting!

Reread likelihood: 8/10

You might also like: Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign, Vol. 1, Vampire Knight, Vol. 1

Vol. 2 picks up with Takumi, Ichiro's childhood friend and protector (?), meeting Ichiro's grandfather, Yzak. Grandpa is creepy as hell, locked away in his basement, but the best part is that he's somehow immortal. He convinces (hypnotises??) Takumi to help him capture Bloody and to bring him to his lair for... nefarious reasons undoubtedly.

Meanwhile, Ichiro continues with his research, looking for information on how to unlock his exorcism ability, only to find strange pictures of himself as a child, hooked up to machines and vats.

We also meet another new character, Hydra (a vampire), who seems to know a lot about Bloody's past but who also wants him dead. She promises Ichiro to help him with his quest if he agrees to help her kill Bloody. Seeing as how Bloody wants to die anyway, it's an easy arrangement.

Vol. 2 picked up considerably from vol. 1 and added lots of plot points and mystery to the story. The new characters are interesting, and Yzak in particular is one to watch for. He knows way more than he lets on.

Maria's childhood friend Takumi apparently has a dark secret: he and his family are protectors of the Maria family, which includes the immortal grandfather of Maria, who has a secret lair in the basement of their mansion. The immortal Maria wants Bloody Mary to be brought to him, because he believes the red-haired vampire is the one who killed his son. But despite Maria's hatred of vampires, he's still quite attached to Mary.

It's weird when elements of a manga are very similar to elements in other manga, but with completely different plots. Or do they? My favorite manga of all time, Loveless, also has an older man with long blond hair who has a younger (looking) companion with cat ears, and though the cat-eared character seems like they are being coerced into this relationship, they are the ones with the real power. Because the relationship between Maria and Mary reminds of that other manga, I find I like this maybe more than I should. I'm still not quite sure about the one female character and her role. The flashbacks to Maria's childhood with Takumi revealed how he discovered that his cross would grow into a huge thing he could use to stab vamps with when he bled on it, which was a pretty cool twist and hopefully will turn out to be important in Maria discovering how to do exorcisms.

This volume deserves more praise than the last one, but I'm still only giving it 3 stars. It's ramping up, that's for sure. I'm actually drawn into it now and becoming invested in the characters and the story, though I can still easily spot a whole lot of flaws that ultimately distract me from everything meant to compliment this series as a whole. But besides that, this is interesting. People sometimes categorize this as a shounen-ai, but I don't see it. If anything, it's a josei (a tease with no real substance or intention on either side). I'm honestly not sure what else to say here, because it's some thiccy plotty situation that I don't really care enough about to delve into here, so just read it for yourself to find out. It is indeed entertaining. It's no masterpiece, but I enjoyed my time reading it. I am also truly invested to see how these two boys...unfurl their pasts and their feelings which seem to be inexplicably connected in ways that should ordinarily end utterly tragically and hatefully. And it looks like it would, but surely, we can't have that... Unless they're just going to spend all 10 volumes hating each other? I guess we'll find out as the story continues to "unravel."

I love how this series doesn't take death seriously at all. It's refreshing.

The protagonists still remind me so much of Yuki and Shuichi (Gravitation). I love the humor, and the drawings are GORGEOUS. ✨ I spent a lot of time pausing to admire them.

Story is good as well. I'm interested in the mysteries, how the main characters' relationship will be developing, and the pacing is good.
