Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.

Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.

Some may think that I am a slow reader, but they would be wrong. The reason that I took so long to read this book is because it is a classic and like a fine wine must be sipped to be enjoyed. These are some of the best stories ever. Sherlock Holmes never get old he just improves with age. The first time I was introduced to Holmes and Watson was when I was about eleven years old. Then followed a life long friendship. I was reacquainted with them years later in my twenties. Now we have met again and I plan on not losing touch with two good friends again. If you can't guess by now I loved this book and would recommend it to any fan of good detective fiction. Just remember the dog in the night.

Having read the adventures of Holmes and Watson from my childhood on out, it was really great to revisit some of the more memorable tales, thanks to a birthday present from a friend! The presentation of this edition is rather nice as well, and I love the illustrations.
