ONE WRONG MOVE.

Disavowed Navy SEAL, Nash Adamson, knows that's all it will take for his high school sweetheart, Maisey, and her unborn child to die at the hands of her psychopath ex.

Vicente Rodriquez is the untouchable drug king of south Florida. He wooed Maisey into believing their whirlwind romance was the fairy tale she'd searched her whole life to find. Pregnant, she couldn't wait to marry him. Life was idyllic until she witnessed her beloved murder in cold blood, then discovered he's already married to a woman who's unable to conceive. Maisey tried running to police, but found herself locked in a gilded cage. Vicente plans on keeping her alive long enough for her to give birth to his son, then he wants her permanently out of his family picture.

When Nash attempts a middle-of-the-night solo rescue at Vicente's remote compound, the mission goes horribly wrong. Suddenly, Nash is left with no choice but to hide deep in the Everglades, running from Vicente's trigger-happy hired guns with the eight-month pregnant woman he's fought years to forget.

When the exertion and stress send Maisey into early labor, the clock is ticking for Nash to save her and her child from not just lethal swamp creatures, but the man who wants her dead.

Why do I do this to myself? I get the first book free, love it (mostly) and then look and see the rest are over my self-impossed ebook pricing limit.

Maisey and Nash were childhood friends and then sweethearts. He asked her to marry him right after he joined up. She said no (Daddy issues). Fast forward many years later, and she's "married" to a real nasty bad guy and pregnant. He comes in to rescue her. They fall back in love and the rest is history. The rest of his crew...can't wait to read their HEAs (when the price comes down).

Why do I love it mostly? The escape from the bad guy went on FOREVER and was often way too over the top ridiculous.

I hoped that this freebie would swing towards snarky pregnant woman bantering with an ex, away from military machismo. My h-o-p-e-s were dashed. (See - dashed hopes. Get it? Get it? I'm wasted here.) Zero snark, plenty of machismo. I don't feel much more enthusiasm for reviewing Rogue's flaws than I felt for reading it, so here, have some bullet points:

- The first flaw: "This series celebrates one particularly fierce band of brothers who valiantly battled terrorists whose crimes against nature and humanity were far too great to chance escape. On a dark night, on foreign soil, SEAL Team Alpha witnessed acts so unspeakably cruel against women, infants and small children that their consciences would not allow anything other than their own brand of justice for the scum terrorist cell. A trial would have been too good for these pigs, and so, one-by-one they were taken out, and the women and children they’d used were freed. By dawn, an entire region breathed easier." Oh look - American golden boys swooping in to save the world from evil terrorists! Fuck the legal system! Fuck due process! Who needs trials when you have good guys and bad guys sandwiched into neat little boxes? Isn't war always simple, clear-cut, black and white? Unfortunately, this little gem was on the very first page.

- The hero constantly whining about the heroine's rejection of his marriage proposal IN HIGH SCHOOL. Riiight, because getting married right out of high school is always the sensible choice.

- Speaking of, their first time: “I came inside you,” he said.“It’s okay.” “What if you get pregnant?” “That would be okay, too. We’ll get married and buy a sweet little house. We’ll be so happy with our baby boy or girl.” They are juniors in high school at this point. I mean, Jesus Fucking Christ - what teenage parents don't have enough money to buy nice houses (or houses at all. Or even to rent.) and live idyllic little lives in them?

- Actually, the two sex scenes made me cringe pretty badly, but this first time one was probably the most realistic part of the whole book, in that it was awkward. Really, painfully, gaggingly awkward. Worryingly, more awkward than the phrase in scene number two: "hungry for something meatier than gravy" and god knows that as a vegetarian, any phrase comparing dick and meat makes me puke everywhere.

- The story arcs of both characters; mostly how the hero is refusing to process his grief at the loss of his family and then has this grand epiphany and is magically healed. Who needs therapy or recovery when we can just have a few flying bullets? It's a wonder more people don't take guns to bereavement support groups... Not to mention the two of them . It's been years since either of them saw each other, but of course that's a wise choice and not rash at all.

- The idiocy of the heroine: does anyone these days not know that phones can be tracked? How does she have the nerve to think things like "Why didn’t the rest of the world see Vicente as she did? How could he have them all fooled?" when she's the moron that married a drug lord and expected him to turn out to be a nice guy? It's not all her though - why keep telling us you shouldn't light a fire and then lighting fires? If you're at a safe house, hiding from some heavily armed people, why do you all insist on hanging out outside where you could easily be seen and/or shot?

- Lots of other stupid or redundant statements:

- "(His expression was) too brimming with the kind of innate self-assurance that was earned." If something is earned, then it's not really innate, is it?
- "His words stung to her core - not only because they hurt, but because he was right." This is like saying "they hurt because they hurt."
- "How familiar and right her soft curves felt", never mind that the last time they had this close contact, they were in high school and she presumably was not heavily pregnant. Just how familiar are those curves again? There are more of these but I don't want to belabour the point.

We're told over and over again how much these two love each other but I never felt it or any emotional connection with either of them. I was upset that a dog was killed but could not have cared less what happened to the two cardboard cutouts masquerading as main characters. Perhaps Rogue could be enjoyable for readers with more traditional attitudes than I but, for those of you who haven't drunk the koolaid, it's a hard pass.

I personally don't like this book because the details of the plot and resolution aren't expressed fully. First off, okay I get Vincente wants a child and his real wife can't conceive but why go through all the trouble of tricking Maisey? With all the money he used to buy neighbors and police officers to help find Maisey, he could have simply gotten a willing surrogate. Secondly, the whole plot is surrounded by Maisey getting away from her all too powerful and influential so called husband. But in the end nothing was actually proven that Vincente was indeed an evil man. How it played out could have simply meant Vincente found his wife and child and fought for them. That's just how I see it.

Horrible

No depth to characters, no reality with the plot, barely managed a DNF which is what made this 2 stars not 1. No interest in reading more dribble from tbis author if this is an example of quality of work.

When reading something from a new author I usually try to go in with an open mind. But already from page 2 I realized that this would not work for me. I gave it a shot though and kept reading until like 20% but then I just couldn't continue and had to put it down and accept a DNF. Mind you that I paid 5,5$ for this.
The characters was so immature. An ex Navy SEAL who trashes the woman he is trying to save by continuously judging her asking "whats wrong with her" and constantly referring to Vincente as "hubby" in order to condescend her. And her snarky comments about his deceased wife and child.

Rogue is book #1 in the (Seal Team: Disavowed) series and the first book I have read by Ms. Altom. About an elite group of Seals who were disbanded by the organization. They now live their lives deep under cover, no longer serving their country, but individuals who find themselves in need of a personal warrior.

The first in the series starts with Nash Adamson and Maisey Blake. I admit I was first attracted to the cover and the fact that their is an adorable baby in the story. I'm happy to say, I LOVED this story. DEFINITELY full of intrigue and Danger. With the most notoriously EVIL man (or any evil character I have ever seen in a book,) I'm still at a loss as to how Maisey ended up with this cold blooded animal. Maisey's, not even ex Vincente Rodriguez wanted to take Maisey's (ok their baby) from her, then kill her as soon as the baby boy was born. I admit it, I had a hard time with the eating the snake. Luckily it was in a book. Not on TV. I am a SUCKER for young love/BFF's to lovers stories, so I LOVED Nash and Maisey. I liked that we got to see their friendship through flashbacks. Some of my favorite moments in the book. When little Nash rescued little Maisey from a playground bully and made sure she got her turn on the swing. Sweet. And their first time on Senior Prom. Nice lighter moments from all the edge of your seat drama and adventure. I absolutely adored Nash with little baby Joe. I now can't wait for Outcast. Jasper's story.

Disavowed Navy Seal Nash Adamson finds himself rescuing, not just anyone, but his bff. First love. First everything. Who dumped him after High School, because she didn't want to be a Navy wife. Now on the run through the Florida wilderness. Trying to escape not only Vincente and his goons but alligators and snakes. They find themselves remembering their close past. But, Nash can't get past the loss of his wife and his own son. Will his love for his best friend help him to move on, to have the family he's always wanted? That is if they all survive.

Okay...Pretty exhausted after that trek through the swamp and all...

Things that worked

Nash Adamson as a former Navy SEAL is an interesting, complex character. He's at a crossroads and has a big decision to make. Go back, or move forward. His first love is in trouble with a man so despicable I shall refer to him as "he who shall not be named". His reputation preceds him. He is a truly horrible man with power. He is an unredeemable character that Nash needs to put down. The true pawn in this whole sorted story is Maisey's unborn son. Maisey has made the ultimate mistake as women sometimes do, but the sins of the mother should never befall the child. Her scandalous relationship with the baby's father leaves a lot of bodies in its wake.

I have to give Maisey props for making it through the swamps and not being a whiny, complaining, weak woman. She held her own pretty good being in the family way and fleeing a madman.

What didn't work

Maisey's name. All I could think about was Maisey the cow, Mayzie, that lazy bird from Horton Hears a Who...Awful name choice for the lead character! Yeah, I know it's lame of me to pick out something as petty as a character name, but mercy when it's written on every other page...

Overall

Enjoyable read and strong beginning to a new series.

The Ex Seal and Tinker bell

Nash and Maisey, teenage sweethearts who each took different turns away from each other on the road of life, are reunited, but in horrific situation. Maisey has been kept isolated from everyone at her ex boyfriends estate. He is holding her prisoner. Maisey mom has hired Nash to rescue her. A difficult task due to her bf being the biggest drug dealer in Florida and has access to many police personnel.

I don't know but for whatever reason, the beginning of this book was slow for me and very predictable. The heroine got on my nerves, as she sat on the bed, pregnant, and tied up by her boyfriend, like that was no big deal. When Nash, and ex-Navy Seal, comes to rescue her from her drug lord boyfriend, it started to improve.
I am looking forward to the rest of the series, to see where it leads.

Romantic thriller (ish)

I am struggling to provide a fair review for this book, I initially thought to award two stars but changed my mind and gave three.
Plot spoiler alert.
The story is as advertised in the blurb, but there is no meat on the bones. FL gets taken in by a drug lord who wants a child from her. Old first love comes to the rescue. Girl fights rescue despite being held captive. Hero, former SEAL with not only the months of training required for the position but almost a decade of action suddenly makes every mistake he possibly could during their escape through the Everglades. Seriously? Like he's not going to ensure his SERE training keeps them safe? Like he's suddenly forgotten the basics of escape and evade?
Then there's the whole concept of his lost wife and baby, no mention of when they died in a bit of a muddle of a backstory timeline.
Then we have to believe he's suddenly over his loss and now wants his first love and her baby.
If the plotline had been worked more thoroughly, if this man, who the U.S. government has invested a fortune in training didn't turn into an inept bungling idiot and if the FL wasn't such a whining and self pitying not to mention self absorbed, well maybe the book would have been more enjoyable.
As it stands I couldn't suspend belief that far.
The characterisation is wooden, the only character I cared about was the baby and he doesn't speak a word. The character development didn't happen, I was no closer to either of them by the end of the book than I was at the beginning.
There are some grammatical and editorial errors that irritated but didn't kill the book.
There are no sex scenes and I can't recall any swearing.
I gave three stars because the book tries hard and if it had been taken in hand by a good editor it could have been so much better. As it is the writing style is a little clumsy with the spoken and internal dialogue often getting a bit mixed, plus, the formatting is awful with an awful lot of sentences taking a few line breaks before the last few words suddenly appear. It makes for a disjointed read.
I don't think I will be purchasing more by this author.

I can’t imagine how Maisey felt when she found out that her husband was already married! Then to learn that the only reason he wanted her was to have a baby because his wife couldn’t conceive. After the baby was born, Maisey wasn’t needed so she would be killed.

Lucky for Maisey, her mother suspected something was wrong so she called ex-Navy SEAL and life-long friend Nash Adamson to find Maisey. Of course, he agreed to bring her home. Nash knew this would be a hard rescue mission for him because he and Maisey had been so close when they were younger. Actually, she had turned him down when he proposed after high school because she didn’t want to be a military wife. Nash had moved on and married. But his life had not been easy. He had lost his wife and son but couldn’t get his head around the fact that they are gone so he hasn’t been working with the team for about a year. He planned this rescue on his own. Not an easy job. Especially running through the Everglades with an 8-months pregnant woman and her ex’s hired guns trying to kill them. Well, kill him. She had to be kept alive until she had the baby.

I loved the way this book showed SEALs to be so capable. They handled terrifying but exciting situations quickly and efficiently. What a horrible ordeal Maisey went through to get away from her ex. She was a bit naive so it was hard for her to accept the despicable man he was since he had been so charming before they were ‘married’.

This was an exciting, action-packed adventure. I liked the romance and flash-backs showing Maisey and Nash as children and teens. It let us see the relationship this pair had all their lives.

I really liked this story and recommend it if you like romantic suspense with lots of action.

This is the first book in the series.

Our heroine is the childhood sweetheart of our hero. Upon talking to one of his relatives, he found and was pleaded to get the heroine. Upon going in to get her he found her pregnant. She didn't believe her lover and father of her baby would do this until she seen another side of him. Then she was locked up and sill couldn't process what her lover did until she saw it with her own eyes that he wanted her killed. She also learned he was still married to his wife as well.

After this, she went with the hero through a run as much as she can to save herself and her baby. However, after a few hiccups, they finally made it where a couple could help and she ends up giving birth. However, the couple are not what they seem, but they finally make it out and to a hospital. Until once again the authorities try and arrest the hero while the heroine is in surgery from the birth. However, the hero gets help and goes into hiding. Soon as the heroine can move she does with help once again from our hero's friends. Things calm down and she recovers. However, she make a mistake and finds them on the run once again. Will they ever escape from this mad man or are they destined to forever be on the run.

The plot was good and original even with them having a prior relationship, you never knew where the other was at with the trust and relationship issues. However, you did feel as you wanted to do something to give the heroine some common sense with her issues with both the hero and with the baby's father. I'm still a bit confused as to why the hero and his team were thrown out of the military and SEALs area though.

It was a good start to a series though.

First time reading this author but won’t be last

Maisey and Nash grew up together. Both their fathers were in the military. Maisey’s dad constantly cheated on her mom, while Nash’s was just gone a lot. When Nash proposes to Maisey and then says he’s joined the Navy, she breaks up with him.
Now years later after losing his wife and unborn son and being disavowed from the Seals, he and his buddies start a security business. Maisey’s mom gets Nash to go after her because her husband has cut her off from her family and friends. Maisey is “married” to a drug king name Vicente. So Nash goes in to rescue her but she puts up a fight first. As they trample through the Everglades, chased by thugs and reward seekers, they must get away because Vicente just wants the baby and plans to kill Maisey.
Fast paced action. A little steamy. Will have you biting your nails till the end.

Second chance romance

High school sweet hearts...broke up over the military and now the military background will save her life. Most of the book is action trying to get away from Maicey’s ex boyfriend who is a drug lord, but there are several flashbacks to their time as a couple and their more recent baggage.

Fast paced and well developed characters. It is predictable, but still a fun and easy read with charismatic characters. Little time with other SEALs, so not sure of the team dynamic beyond the stereotype of brothers, but the ending set up the story for the next SEAL which sounds interesting.

A sticky situation

Nash is an ex deal who is broken by his wife and baby's deaths but agreed to rescue his first love from a drug kingpin. Pregnant and scared, Maisey is held hostage by a man she thought was her husband but finds out its a sham. Running for their lives Nash has to use his seal skills to get them to safety through the swamps. I enjoyed this book and will read more of the series, but Maisey was a little too much dumb blond for my taste and continually jeopardized Nash's rescue plans with poor decisions.

Nash and Maisey

This is an exciting action packed adventure. I read it in one sitting and was on the edge of my seat. We have an ex Navy Seal trying to rescue his very pregnant high school sweetheart from her mobster ex. They are on the run through the Everglades battling bugs, alligators, bad guys and snakes. Oh yeah and she’s in labor. Both have unresolved feelings from past relationships and the feelings that crop up are confusing the whole situation. This is the first book in the series and I’ll definitely be reading more.

Good, fast moving story

I got caught up in this story right ftom the beginning. It took a bit for Maisey to understand the danger she was in from her ex and to trust the ex-SEAL that was trying to save her. I liked the flashbacks that gave us the history of the past relationship of the two main characters. There were a couple points that suspended disbelief just a little too far, but liked the ending and look forward to more in the series.

Good Book

This was a really good book. It was different from the exotic romance books I'm used to reading. But I did really enjoy reading it, just wish it had be longer, only took about four hours to read. I don't have kindle unlimited, and I can't afford to buy any books. So if you have anymore free ones like this or similar for free, please email me, at VICKIROGERS57@GMAIL.COM.

Action packed, nail biting edge of your seat, can’t put it down story

Nash and Maisey have a lot of history. Nash has a lot of baggage from the tragic loss of his first wife. Maisey has a bigamous gangster as her unborn baby’s father, and is a captive in that drug lord’s home in the Everglades. Not only do they have to escape practically the whole state of Florida, they also have to overcome serious emotional barriers. This one’s a Wowza!

I love books about SEALs!

Rogue is a second-chance romance with a former Navy SEAL. Nash Adamson’s wife and son were killed while he was off saving the world. So when he has the chance to rescue former high school sweetheart—who is pregnant—from her drug-lord boyfriend deep in the Everglades, he isn’t giving up. I admit to wanting to slap Maisey a few times, but I enjoyed watching the two of them find each other again. Nash is a hunk!

Good Start

Nash is a guy that won’t let go. As noble as that may be, it’s also a destructive road.
Maisey fell for the wrong guy, her eternal optimism keeps blinding her to the gravity of her choices. They can’t out run danger, their past, or bond they thought was long ago broken

Yet the devil’s in the details, and in this case there’s some short cuts that make the story seem sloppy at times.

Lost loves resurfacing

Nash has lost more than his wife and son, he has lost his heart and mind, but can his old flame repair him? Traveling thru the Florida Everglades, hiding from her drug-lord 'husband', is not the way to gain a man's love...or is it? You'll have to read it to find out...and it's definitely worth the read. I couldn't put it down once I started.

Danger, Danger

Exciting, dramatic, three speeds ahead into more danger! There is no time to breathe, only to escape the danger right in front of you, from dangerous animals and people. ...and just when you think you are safe, think again. A great read!! I. I've never read anything by Laura Marie Alton before, but I'll look for her in the future.

Action packed

Hot cover, Hot intimacy, great story that kept me wanting to read on. Not the normal fluffy romance, but you do get a happy ending and no cliffhanger. The ending allows to continue with another SEAL member. Looking forward to see if this author can keep the momentum as well as the quality. Definitely a good read!

Action packed

A heavily pregnant woman, being reluctantly extracted from a drug lord's compound, flee through a swamp assisted by her ex, a former navy seal.
It's gritty, lots of unresolved emotion, terror of being hunted, greed & corruption impeding flight.
Exciting adventure but not for faint hearted.

I somewhat I had high hopes for this book but let me just say the book was better than I hoped it would be. The love between Maisey and Nash started out as pure love of kids and reconnecting as adults with trauma, deceit, heart-break, and so much more in the time they were apart made their love story so much sweeter in the end.
