Rishas, Duzell's former lover and companion, has been reincarnated as Lailis, the Queen of Lodoc. Lailis confesses that she was reincarnated to find Duzell and serve him once again. However, seeing Duzell's love for Ishtar, she is bitterly disappointed. Meanwhile, Lassen is busy paying a visit to Darres and Yujinn, with a group of undead soliders of Lodoc under his command...
It’s an exciting return to the previous level of intrigue, danger, and humour in this manga when all of the players find themselves in the lair of Lord Lassen. Ishtar finds herself there, facing down her greatest enemy in her murderous cousin. Darres is there, facing a deadly challenge from Lassen which makes him require all of Yujinn and Duzell’s deviousness to get out of. Yujinn confronts Duzell, making the vampire king an offer he can’t refuse, or can he? If he can’t, Lailis can. The queen has had enough of Duzell’s bond with Ishtar, along with Lassen’s strings. With Sharlen’s help, the two of them start playing a game of their own. Only look out, Mil Seii! Illsaide is in town, he’s taking down undead, and turning heads, not necessarily in that order. Especially when three of those heads are the murderous Sir Hume’s, Sharlen’s, and Lord Lassen’s own.
The game feels like a return to the previous balance I enjoyed in earlier volumes between drama, humour, and intrigue. Lassen and Sharlen have made things intense again, raising the stakes for Ishtar, Duzell, Darres, and Yujinn by opposing them with their best (or worst) schemes. At the same time, they’re showing a softer, more complex side with Illsaide, whom they’d all like to get to know better. The gender bending subplot with Lailis once being Rishas, Duzell’s former boy toy, was an intriguing detail, plus her motivations for her actions and her true power. Darres and Ishtar were quite adorable in this volume in their shy awkwardness around each other, a fact enjoyed by Yujinn while it troubled Duzell. I have a theory about Yujinn, which I’m wondering if I’ll get enough evidence to prove. I may write a blog about it at rhodrymavelyne.dreamwidth.org once I finish this series.
For getting the game back into action with its juggling of plot, intrigue, character development, comedy, and a little yaoi, all depicted in a sleek, androgynously aesthetic style, this gets five stars.
Finally beginning to progress in our twisted plot, alliances and swapped sides are being decided in preparation for what can be expected as a likely war. Strangely enough, Illsaide is assisting our cliched bad guys (for Falan of course, who still has been shoved out of the picture), Queen Lailis switched her devotion to Duzell to Sharlen, and in general Duzell has changed enough to be helping the Phelio's bloodline while attempting to find his reincarnation. I just want to say this, but I am so proud of Seiliez!! If he had taken Sharlen back, everyone's suspicions would have been correct, but Seiliez showed them all! Although Lassen supposedly captured Darres and Yuujel, they still were for some reason able to go free...? That's the main part that I was confused about, but it seems to have worked out for them anyway. Ishtar being able to visit them too was weird, and I guess I just didn't analyze the situation well enough. If Yuujel ends up having some kind of special plan that favors his and not Ishtar's best interests, I'M GOING TO FLIP. It's all not adding up right, and since he seems to be controlling much of the situation I cast my suspicions on him. If he ends up working with Lassen, or Sharlen, and attempts to turn Duzell against Ishtar, Judal is going to have a very full mailbox. Darres still is too slow to connect the dots about Duzell, (the supposed doctor) and Ishtar's kyawl. Which is slightly surprising since Ishtar keeps blurting it out. It's also kinda nice though too, because then he can be dramatically surprised later! Ishtar and Darres are slowly becoming the couple that blindly love each other and will use sacrifice to prove it. I'm hating it. HATING IT. At least Duzell teaches Ishtar to be smarter and cleverer. Oh well, I think I can see where this romance is taking us, and I'm not liking it. People are betraying one another, mainly people who were supposed to be on the same side. The enemy has doubled, but my enemy's enemy is my friend, right guys? Ha, ha.... *nervous laughter*

Love vampire game as a whole, but this volume isn't one of my favourites - In order for Darres to be able to unsheathe the holy sword Sida - Duzell and Yuujinn perform a spell switching Ishtar's and Darres' blood - it's a bit out of the blue and some more explanation would have been nice.
This volume also suffers from FAR too many characters. I'm OK with the good guys, but in the last few volumes we've been introduced to villain upon villain - Vampire Sharlen (also called Bats??? or is that another characters?), Lassen, Hume, Lailis... and lets not forget Illisade who may be persuaded to join the villains. It's really confusing - Hume and Lassen look quite similar and the complex relationships between all the characters is becoming a real struggle.
There's some sweet Darres/Ishtar moments and of course the usual standard of artwork - but it really is a struggle to keep the complex web of characters and plots straight by this point.
The series as a whole was good in the beginning. Very funny and intriguing. I love romances where the characters have loved each other forever but have never told each other or something like that. lol The series declines in quality, I think towards the end. There are too many characters in too many places and things get a little confusing.
