My feelings about this book are all over the place.
On the one hand I love it, on the other hand I'm pissed at it. It was a good decision not to rate it yesterday evening. I would tear it apart in my review and my rating would be much, much lower. And that would be unfair because this book is good.
It’s not the storyline that bothers me. I don’t mind love triangles in books as long as they're handled well. In fact, I’m always looking for a big thrill. The angstier, the better. You know the saying, comfort zone is a beautiful place but nothing ever grows there. So every now and then I get into a masochistic mood and I need a book that will make me pull my hair out, bite my nails off and bawl my eyes out.
Anyway, back to the point. The story started off fantastic. It was hot, intriguing and it sucked me right in. The writing was phenomenal. I loved the angst, the chemistry, the anticipation, the awkward situations, the pull, the thrill of forbidden love, the fear, the frustration, the guilt, the agony.... Up until the 50% mark I was 100 percent sure I was holding a five-star book in my hands. And I was ecstatic.
Both of the heroes were great. I couldn’t decide who I should root for. The only thing I was sure of is that I wanted them to both ditch the girl.Or to start dating each other. Because I didn’t like the heroine. In the beginning she seemed strong and smart. Until I got to know her better. Until I couldn’t stand anymore how selfish, self-centered, spoiled and immature she was.
And I perfectly understand the message the author is trying to convey in this book and I know why she’s deliberately portraying the heroine that way. But she didn’t succeed in convincing me that the heroine chose the right guy in the end. The ending felt rushed and everything was resolved too quickly and too smoothly.

Slip of the Tongue is absolutely enthralling. Jessica Hawkins continues to be one of the most underrated contemporary romance authors today. I ADORED this book!!!
I am personally a fan of love triangles in books – I know, a little strange, but I love the emotion, the forbidden-love aspect and and the thrill of it all. So if you are not a fan, then this book is probably not for you. Sadie has been married to an amazing man who has suddenly and inexplicably shut down. Nathan has stopped communicating with Sadie, seems to not want her anymore, and pretty much just shuts her out. She tries to get through to him, to no avail. Enter sexy neighbor Finn, who is smart, sweet, and makes his intentions very clear from the start.
I have LOVED this author’s writing ever since I read her Cityscape series (which I highly recommend.) Ms. Hawkins made me FEEL Sadie’s insecurities, her inner battles and her fear of losing her husband and I felt like I was on an emotional roller coaster from the first page of this book. This is a very adult and very passionate book where not all is black-and-white. Yes, Nathan seems perfect and yes, Sadie makes some mistakes, but she is human and I found the story to be very believable. I loved Finn and could see why Sadie was so conflicted. She love her husband but feels like her marriage is over. All of the characters in this book are incredibly well written and I connected with them from the start.
Finn and Sadie have explosive chemistry AND so do Sadie and Nathan! The sex scenes are absolutely incredible. I loved everything about this book and loved the conclusion. Kudos to Jessica Hawkins for another incredibly sexy and addictive story.

This was my first Jessica Hawkins book and it was a heck of a ride. Can I just say HOLY ANGSTFEST?!
WHOA! INDEED!
So first things first, I should start with:
1. There's a 95% chance that at some point while reading this novel you'll be pissed off. **laughs**
2. I LOVE weak willed characters who give into their base desires. Life isn't pretty. Sometimes things happen and you aren't as strong as you think. Often, people don't find out what they're made of until life has handed them a "rough" patch. I have EMPATHY--for those who are resolute in their moral high ground AND for those who aren't. I understand that people have moments of weakness that can be labeled as selfish. I get that for some there are simply no excuses that can make a betrayal okay. But, I also know that the heart isn't perfect. Sometimes it stutters and falters, sometimes it's suffocated by pain and rejection so thick, it's blinded and becomes lost.
3. In a BOOK WORLD cheating doesn't bother me. AT ALL. I can understand it.
4. If you hate heroines who think of themselves and their feelings, who aren't firm in what they want, then ... maybe go into this knowing that Sadie can be a little flaky at times. (AND PS: I LOVED THAT ABOUT HER)
Now ... Seeing as that's out of the way, I'll move on! Cause... Holy moly! THIS BOOK ROCKED MY FACE OFF. I was raging and huffing and puffing and dying through most of this novel.

This is a juicy read that spares no punches. Jessica's writing is solid. The characters are flawed, authentic, and compelling. Slip of the Tongue has it all, from erotic sex that makes you hot and bothered, to intimate moments that have you swooning, to the utter heartbreak of rejection, betrayal, and devastation. Nothing is glossed over, and it's as addictive as it is painful and thrilling!
Sadie has it all, until one day her husband turns cold. As each day passes Nathan's retreat is a brutal wound being inflicted on Sadie's heart. After all it took her years to let Nate in, and now that she has, he's doing the one thing he promised he wouldn't, he's giving her space and withholding his love at every turn. It hurts, and to say Sadie feels alone is an understatement. The husband who adored her, can barely stand to be in the same room as she is. She deals with it as best as she can, trying to love Nathan through whatever is bothering him but the more she pushes, the more he shuts down.
As Sadie navigates her quickly crumbling marriage, someone new moves in across the hall. Finn reminds Sadie of a 'warm' Nathan. He's funny. He listens to her, makes her feel special and leaves her at complete ease. Fresh on the heels of rejection, Sadie's lonely intensifies. Finn hones in on this. He recognizes this girl needs. And slowly a friendship forms.
But Finn has his own secrets, his own complex issues. He feels something for Sadie that he can't yet explain.

So much happens.
Between Finn and Sadie. Between Sadie and Nate. There are twists and turns you don't see coming.
This novel is a whirlwind of feels that are wholly consuming. Once you start reading, be prepared to be owned. I guarantee you won't put it down until it's done.
Addictive. Painful. Captivating. Tumultuous. Juicy. Sexy. Slip of the Tongue is an authentic, raw, and emotionally gripping must read that I just loved. A highly recommended favorite of mine.

Slip of the tongue tells the story of Sadie - a perfectionist when it comes to her marriage. But she is having trouble with her husband Nathan who has been cold, distant, and just downright mean. And when her hot as sin new neighbor Finn moves in, she goes to him for comfort and their affair begins.
There were very few things I liked about this story. And A LOT of things I did not.
Actually, as I sit here and write this review, I think the only thing I actually did like about this story was Finn. He was sexy, sweet, patient, and even though he wasn't Sadie's husband, I was kind of routing for him the whole time.
"If you can't do this, I will. I'll make this decision for us. When you hurt tomorrow, physically, or emotionally... when you question what we did...when you ache to do it again- I'll take the blame for all of it Sadie."
See? He's probably the only thing that kept me going.
Now for what I didn't like. As I read, and especially when I finished, something about the story was just …off. Something didn’t click with me. Maybe it was the choppy writing, which I personally am not a fan of.
But as I continued to think about it, realization dawned. So I’ll just admit it….the heroine?
There, I said it. I found her annoying, self-involved, spoiled, and rather daft. I had an extremely hard time understanding how someone could fall head over heels for this girl, especially after spending only a few short moments together. Was Finn really willing to change his whole life for HER? I just didn’t believe it. In addition to her lack of remorse and some infuriating thoughts, she lacked personality and I found her dull. I don’t think the book being solely in her point of view helped this. After a while, I started to skim her inner monologues because I just didn’t care for her thoughts.
Slight SPOILERS to further clarify what I didn't like:
I won't spoil it and discuss which man she winds up with, but in my opinion the ending was too wrapped up in a neat little bow. And the reactions of both men just 'accepting' things was so unrealistic.

I don't even know what I think. The angst. The frustration. Gaahh. I wanted to throw my kindle more than a few times. Slip of the Tongue was not an easy read, I felt LOTS of things. Marriage is tough, but communication is essential, once you stop talking, things can get messy - throw in a sexy neighbor waiting next door and all hell breaks lose.
”…if I had your love I wouldn’t waste it like he does. He’s playing a game with you. He’ll regret pushing you away, though, when he realizes I’m here, waiting to catch you.”
I think my major frustration is with Sadie. Most of the time she came across as a bit cold and selfish. That said, this was an addicting read. I was anxiously gripping my kindle, wondering what was going to happen. This story had an honestly to it, I appreciated the flawed characters, we aren't perfect and it's easy to see how a woman, feeling alienated, and lonely, would be tempted to bask in the attention of another, its human. But unfortunately most of the time Sadie simply came across as whiny, and selfish - I felt like she jumped ship too easily, considering what kind of marriage she had. This is a woman who has been showered with adoration and love for years, but when he husband suddenly starts to distance himself, she just sits back for months she just lets it happen, never asking questions. The ending does wrap up a little too cleanly, but overall, this was an entertaining read.

4.25 "Pea" STARS
Wow, this was a really good story but so emotional for me. I felt tattered, torn and deliciously wrung out after reading this. It was wonderfully written and so enthralling that I didn't want to put it down but I had to. I needed breaks because I couldn't take the emotions and turmoil.
Jessica Hawkins does a fantastic job of taking us into the middle of a marriage. A marriage that for 7 years appeared perfect to both husband and wife - Nathan and Sadie Hunt - and to all those that knew them...until it wasn’t. Literally overnight, Nathan withdrew. Stopped communicating, was away more than he was at home, no intimacy or sex...Sadie was alone in their marriage.
Of course, all of this added up to a very sad, confused and lonely Sadie and also a lot of speculating as to why?
Their new neighbour, Finn Cohen, becomes Sadie's friend, confidant and more. These two share a connection that goes deeper than purely physical and also brings fate into the equation. Are we predestined to walk a path? Meant to be with only one person? Finn was easy to like. He was sexy, sweet and a romantic. Actually, in some ways, he was like Nathan.
“Since I first saw Finn in the hallway, we’ve been engaged in this drawn-out, fucked-up dance of innuendo and lingering glances…”
All three of them were easy to like, for the most part. I had my moments when I wanted to ream each of them out but their positions, their feelings were understandable. This story was told in Sadie's POV and as much as I would've liked to be in the mind of Nathan (especially) and at times, Finn, it made sense to have this story told by Sadie. I usually struggle to relate to the cheater in stories of infidelity but I understood Sadie’s struggle and I connected with her.
There were moments where the story would peak and then slow, but I felt the momentum of the story added to the intensity of their turmoil, which was all wrapped up in the triviality of life. Life went on no matter what was happening.
This story of marriage was about the importance of communication, the downfall of the unattainable perfection and the power and nurturing of forgiveness. The ending wrapped up a bit too neatly and quickly for me but all-in-all, I thoroughly enjoyed this and will be reading more from this author.

SLIP OF THE TONGUE is about marriage, communication, love and human behaviour, the good, the bad and the ugly. I went through so many different emotions whilst reading this story, sympathy, understanding, love and hate. It explores the relationship between a husband and wife and the vital ingredients that make a marriage work. An over-riding message is that nothing is as simple as it seems when affairs of the heart are involved and emotions combined with sensitive themes are part of the equation.
After 7 years of perfect married bliss something changes between Sadie and Nathan. Once the perfect husband he's become withdrawn and disinterested over a period of two months sparking a catalyst of happenings that have the potential to cause devastation. Everything is falling apart leaving space for another man to make his presence known and felt. A man who's sexy, interesting and charismatic, and wants Sadie. Perception and perspective are explored and I felt Sadie's plight from the beginning as she struggles to understand the developments within her marriage.
Guilt is explored along with fate, trust and assumptions. This story eloquently depicts communication as a crucial ingredient for a marriage to thrive and convincingly showcases the power of the mind. The characters experience their fate and question the simplicity of fate, does it lead you through a direct path or take you on painful, necessary twists and turns in order to arrive at ones ultimate destiny and crucially, how does one truly know what is meant to be?
The prose allows the reader to glimpse Nathan and Sadie during their contented past as flashbacks laced occasionally through the present offering a stark juxtaposition against the deterioration of their marriage. It's both sad and touching and stimulates those wonderful angstful moments that I crave from my reading material. I know what’s right and wrong but I'm equally so interested in understanding the reasons why people act the way they do.... I love my authentic motivation in reading and this author nails it in this story. Sadie's relationship with Finn grew into something lovely. At times I felt like I was watching something I shouldn't, but I could not look away from the wreckage. I appreciated the telling of the affair, the highly engaging writing and the concept of the overly warm apartment reflecting the way she feels about the state of her marriage set against the warmth of another person, I thought this was so damn clever of the author. I didn't always love or admire her actions and thoughts but this author with her incredibly well crafted prose, gave me the tools to understand the female protagonist and totally appreciate the thoughts this story evokes about relationships and marriage. Sadie is shown to be selfish but equally she's absolutely fascinating and her character drives the story arc through all its developments. Her thoughts and dialogue often run into one another, which sometimes caused me to go back and check whether the heroine was speaking out loud or thinking to herself but once I settled into the rhythm of the story I highly appreciated the style of this author and the telling of SLIP OF THE TONGUE. In many ways a difficult story to depict but as a reader I garnered so much feeling and thought from this story and simply could not stop reading... I needed to know the outcome. I needed to know how their triangle would end.

SLIP OF THE TONGUE is about marriage, communication, love and human behaviour, the good, the bad and the ugly. I went through so many different emotions whilst reading this story, sympathy, understanding, love and hate. It explores the relationship between a husband and wife and the vital ingredients that make a marriage work. An over-riding message is that nothing is as simple as it seems when affairs of the heart are involved and emotions combined with sensitive themes are part of the equation.
After 7 years of perfect married bliss something changes between Sadie and Nathan. Once the perfect husband he's become withdrawn and disinterested over a period of two months sparking a catalyst of happenings that have the potential to cause devastation. Everything is falling apart leaving space for another man to make his presence known and felt. A man who's sexy, interesting and charismatic, and wants Sadie. Perception and perspective are explored and I felt Sadie's plight from the beginning as she struggles to understand the developments within her marriage.
Guilt is explored along with fate, trust and assumptions. This story eloquently depicts communication as a crucial ingredient for a marriage to thrive and convincingly showcases the power of the mind. The characters experience their fate and question the simplicity of fate, does it lead you through a direct path or take you on painful, necessary twists and turns in order to arrive at ones ultimate destiny and crucially, how does one truly know what is meant to be?
The prose allows the reader to glimpse Nathan and Sadie during their contented past as flashbacks laced occasionally through the present offering a stark juxtaposition against the deterioration of their marriage. It's both sad and touching and stimulates those wonderful angstful moments that I crave from my reading material. I know what’s right and wrong but I'm equally so interested in understanding the reasons why people act the way they do.... I love my authentic motivation in reading and this author nails it in this story. Sadie's relationship with Finn grew into something lovely. At times I felt like I was watching something I shouldn't, but I could not look away from the wreckage. I appreciated the telling of the affair, the highly engaging writing and the concept of the overly warm apartment reflecting the way she feels about the state of her marriage set against the warmth of another person, I thought this was so damn clever of the author. This is a well written story with two wonder men to choose from for this once doted upon wife. Sadie has lost her husband's affection and attention in the past two months and during this time she connects with the new sexy neighbor in more ways than one.
"He's playing a game with you. He'll regret pushing you away, though, when he realizes I'm here, waiting to catch you."
I was disappointed with the ending and I think because I was expecting so much more heading in any of the many directions the story could have gone. Simply put I think I was expecting a WTF or WOW didn't see that coming from the ending which didn't happen. Nevertheless, Jessica Hawkins is definitely an author I will read again I adored her writing style and am looking forward to the next book in the series.

4.25 Emotionally-gripping Stars!
Wow. This book was really different on many levels. I felt like the author took us into the life of a married couple...a couple once perfectly happily married- until they weren't. A couple where suddenly, for no voiced reason, the husband starts staying out late after work, starts chilling her out physically, starts ramping up his gym regimen...stops communicating. It all points to one huge beacon...another woman. If only he'd speak to her, voice his issues but nothing. Silence. And silence is the worst punishment of all because with silence we get imagination of all the worse case scenarios. Silence equals resentment and loneliness. Loneliness equals... finding what you're missing at home with another man.
Jessica Hawkins takes us within the life of Nathan and Sadie. They've been blissfully married many years and suddenly the past two months, everything changed. Sadie is at a loss and Nathan is growing further and further away from her both emotionally and physically.
One day a new tenant moves in across the hall- Finn Cohen. He's tall, masculine and tattooed perfection. And best of all, he pays attention to a very lonely Sadie. Sadie struggles against the pull of a man so warm and sweet and with each passing day, getting frozen out by Nathan...of sitting home alone as he is who-knows-where. Her strength slips. If it's good for Nathan, I guess it's good for her...
A Slip of the Tongue is solely in the heroine's POV and though it's imperative to the story NOT to be in Nathan's head (in order to feel that inner question mark Sadie felt), I longed to know what he too was going through. I felt her inner pain and because of that, I understood Sadie's struggle with fidelity. If he only could tell her why he's so emotionally disconnected they could've fixed it... Finn and Sadie share a connection that years apart hasn't seemed to break. Is he "the one that got away" and what role does fate play in our lives?
The book ebbed and flowed for me. Sometimes I was completely enraptured in it, other times I was a bit bored. But all in all, I found this to be a very emotional and realistic book. Not all marriages are perfect and lack of communication is oftentimes the biggest shortfall. I deducted a bit due to the whole conflict resolution. I felt it was a bit too "wrapped up in a bow" than realistic in the end for me. But all in all, I really "enjoy" the whole concept of love triangles and infidelity as it adds an angst factor all its own. Jessica Hawkins surpassed my expectations here and I look forward to more from her as this appears to be a trope of choice for her...a trope she's truly perfected.

Finn Cohen was the new neighbor across the hallway. The easy and carefree man was at a turning point in his life, taking hold of his future, doing things we wanted to do and that's including finding the woman he wanted. Sparks ignited the second their eyes met. They fed each other's needs. But Sadie wasn't the only one came without a baggage.
I know cheating/love triangle isn’t everyone's favorite subject, but it's actually one of mine because there are always possibility of high angst and hurt. This book certainly had both to offer.
I think most people who had problem with this book was due to Sadie. She was a hard character to love. She was incredibly selfish and self centered. However, I did understand and relate to her situation to a degree.
Nate was pretty much the perfect husband, but there were only so much one can take. He didn't exactly handle the issue the right way, but it's really hard for me to fault him.
On the surface, Finn might come across as a wife stealer. But his attentiveness and willingness to make changes just made him so attractive and swoony. And it doesn't help that I have a weakness for free spirits.
What's hard about this book is, there's no villain to put the blame at. Each one of them was flawed and relatable. So it put you in a wringer with whom to side with.
I really like the story but I wasn't completely happy with the ending. It felt too convenient. There was not enough convincing on how each of them accepted the outcome. And the other person's conclusion was undeservedly lacking.
Slip of the Tongue is a story of an affair amidst a marriage breakdown. There is no black and white in the story, and if you like threading the grey area you might enjoy this one.

Ok Eeeek how do I review this book? This very REAL book?? About real life and real consequences... That touched my heart deeply. My emotions are all over the damn place today so I apologise right now for an emotional filled review.
I'll start from the beginning..
Sadie and Nathan have been in blissful marriage, everyone wants to be them, it's the real kind of loving relationship that from the outside they're truly happy. And they have been like that inside as well for all this time, Nathan lives to LOVE Sadie and take care of HER NEEDS. Be there and look dote after her. And then it all changed and the once loving caring and happy husband stopped everything he did. He stayed out late, had nights out on his own. Did his own things including going to have a beer LATE, go to the gym LATE. And Sadie was left lonely in her own marriage. Unknown what happened and why he doesn't want to include her yet he hasn't changed to everyone else.
Finn has moved into apartment 6A across the hall from them and is offering friendship and himself to her. They want each other and they are most definitely attracted to each other. I suppose when your husbands not taking care of you, your lonely and an attractive man is offering himself on a plate then she accepts his invitation. And therefore its a whirlwind of emotions that took hold of my heart and stuck there for the past few days. I think though, Finn taught Sadie how to feel again, to be herself, and to start to want to give back.
And let's talk about the smexy!! I am just going to say on both parties, it's raw animalistic, pull your panties down HOT.. #JustSaying
Marriage is hard work however you look at it 'in reality it takes time, patience, love and loyalty.
So what I found so different about this book was how REAL this story is. This is no thoughtless, this is REAL hardship, REAL pain and REAL LOVE.
I am married and I have kids. I 100% love my husband but I can tell you that sometimes just sometimes I want to take a breather for no other reason than that marriage takes time. You need to work through your problems, and deal with the aches and pains that come along.
And then there's Sadie..
Sadie is SELFISH you need to be to walk right? To wonder, there has to be something about YOU that makes you do that. It's not for Nate and it's not for Finn. But rest assured she loves and cares for both.
I'm going to let you read this and enjoy it for what it is. But I will say this, this is a rollercoaster of emotions.. Gah I was holding my heart, begging it to be one way or the other.. it is an angst fest although I didn't cry that much it really did make me hold my breathe.
This book bottom line is about LOVING and learning to give, to feel, and to LIVE.
Why not 5?
Do not let me confuse you and say this is an ok read, this is a fantabulous book. But it wrapped up pretty quickly in a nice neat bow and I suppose I wanted to see some therapy and to see wounds addressed for all parties involved. It didn't deal with that. I would of maybe have liked to have seen a 5 plus year gap epilogue and seen into the future. But hey this author really does know her characters, and knows about this kind of subject she obviously knows how to write it cause you ARE THERE WITH THEM. And well in this senario you can't be happy with it ALL can you?
Jessica has most definitely got her niche is this kind of plot. I loved her writing style and for one I will most definitely be reading her books again in the future.

Once again I decided to step outside of my box and read a book that's not in my comfort zone. These kind of books make me drink!!! lol I'm glad I did because I really loved it.
Nathan and Sadie have been together for 7 years. Nathan worships the ground his wife walks on. His favorite things are her favorite things even if he doesn't really like them. When they go out with friends he always makes sure she's having a good time. He texts or calls her letting her know where he's at and also just to make sure she's having a good day. He always puts others first volunteering at homeless shelters. He also always puts Sadie first until one day he doesn't.
Sadie doesn't understand what's going on with her husband. Out of the blue one day a couple months ago he just started shutting her out. He doesn't text her like he used to. He's stop talking to her unless they are passing in the hall. They don't have sex any longer. Sadie thinks he just needs his space so she doesn't say anything. She's not really worried about it because she knows how Nathan is until she meets their new HOT neighbor.
Finn has just moved in across the hall. Finn and Sadie become friends. Finn is shocked when he finds out Sadie is married because she's always alone. Finn has his own baggage which shocked me. I wasn't expecting it.
I loved Nathan and Finn. I didn't love Sadie. I felt she was selfish and very spoiled. I felt like she didn't deserve Nathan or Finn.

The end was way rushed and I couldn't for the life of me believe how Nathan handled things at the end. OMG!!!! I'm so mad with the rushed ending! A damn epilogue would of been nice!

I decided to stop reading this book at 59%, because it kept pushing my buttons and I don't want to throw my kindle out of the window due to it.
ATTENTION: LOTS OF SWEARING AHEAD. This book awoke the beast in me :)))
Besides the fact that the characters are flat and plain and they think just with other parts of their body instead of brain almost all the time, the plot is just sexually driven or lust driven, which you want to choose, and I'm sure I've read it in other books. BUT this one is the most special of them all, because I've never met such a whore which poses as a good and loyal wife. And trust me, I'm Hell mad right now, because usually I hate to use 'whore' and 'slut' as labels for women; even when they are just sexual objects or they think about sex 24/7... you got the idea.
So, Sadie tries to save her marriage but she meets another man who moves across the hallway and you could imagine how it goes. It's not the first book that I've read when cheating happens but man...

I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS TO ANYONE, cause characters are brainless and think with their sexual organs, they fuck everywhere, they seem to care about their other partners but just a bit until they get to know each other and get naked. After than the reader is the only one who cares... and gets headaches. Or maybe you like this types of books and my review will be to you without sense.
Sorry for the swearing and the long and negative review but I really needed to get these out. And I'm wonder how the fuck this has so many positive reviews? What the fuck is to love at this book? but at the same time I'm glad that also other people agree with me. Because I'm never agreeing with cheating - if you don't love him anymore or you feel that something is wrong then break up before starting anything. Just my opinion.

This was the sort of book which was a little too naughty to read in the same room as my mother, but at the same time it was way too good to put down!
I liked both Sadie and Finn, and they worked really well together. I totally got Sadie’s confusion over what was going on with her husband, and her needing to be comforted, even if it was by another man.
The storyline in this was pretty good, even though it involved cheating. Sadie and Finn worked well together, and the question over what was going on with Sadie’s husband, and the fact that she thought her marriage was over really pushed her into Finn’s arms.
The romance between Sadie and Finn was pretty explosive, and the sex scenes were really hot!
The ending to this wasn’t quite what I expected, and I would have liked for things to have ended slightly differently. Overall this was a really enjoyable book though, and I will definitely be checking out this author’s other books.

Have you read that blurb? Holy Angstfest and more! I knew there would be some angst but I wasn't prepared for how much there is and like the little addict I am, I couldn't read the book fast enough.
However, I didn't like everything. The three people involved all bugged me at one point or another and I hated knowing one of them would be left out in the cold. The blurb made me want to know more about the loving husband but we really don't get much of that. And I would have loved his POV.
I was happy with the way things ended up although it ended quickly and an epilogue would've been nice especially something about the left-out person.
I hope there's a book in the future for Sadie's brother, Andrew...he seems really yummy - hot, tattooed bad boy who is a loving father...what more could you want? ;)

WARNING: If you don't like cheating then this is not the book for you.
I requested this book on Netgalley as I liked the sound of the plot. However, I naively assumed that it would be one of those books where the husband is made out to be so horrible that the fact the wife has an affair can be kind of overlooked! How wrong I was!
The book is told entirely from Sadie's POV but it could have done with at least Nathan's POV. What annoyed me about the storyline is that it's only been TWO months of Sadie's husband ignoring her. The minute she meets her new neighbour Finn, she is attracted to him straightaway and even invites him over for dinner because her husband is always out on Wednesday nights. I didn't like Sadie. She comes across like a spoilt, selfish bitch! I never believed she loved Nathan. If her eyes are drawn to another man after two months of a little bit of difficulty in her marriage then I'm not convinced she is happy and in love.
The author does not expand enough on happier times in their marriage but we are told that Nathan has Sadie on a pedestal. He loves her and has always treated her well and done everything for her basically, he has spoilt her and god knows why! They decided to try for a baby but after 7 months of Sadie not falling pregnant and getting so upset over it, Nathan agreed she should go back on the pill and they would try again later. But it is since then that Nathan has become distant. He is spending more and more time out with his friends. It takes a while for us to understand why Nathan is acting like this but it becomes clear, he's not a bad person, he is struggling with something. However, he definitely needed to 'man up. Sadie begins to think Nathan is having an affair but thinks nothing of the fact that it's her who is doing the dirty. The author just did not endear her to me at all.
One minute Sadie is worrying about why Nathan is ignoring her, next she's lusting after Finn. In no time at all, she is having sex with Finn at his place and in public! The whole book takes place over a few weeks so it's not a long affair but Finn is assuming they will end up together and Sadie is just all over the place and an annoying cow! As for Finn...all he does is go on about fate but at the end of the day, he's married with a child and he's acting like a teenager. I didn't like him. I didn't like his wife either and we saw no evidence of him being the good father he stated he was (the child only appears once). He feels no guilt for what he is doing to his wife or to Nathan. He is quite happy to assume him and Sadie can make a go of things. To me, he was living in dreamland!
There are hints throughout of something Sadie did in the past and I guessed what it would be. Again, I found her selfish. When secrets are revealed, I could understand why Nathan behaved the way he did but then he just ends up being a total idiot in my eyes.
Not wishing to spoil it as to which man she chooses, but the ending was too wrapped up in a neat little bow and unrealistic with the reactions of both men who just 'accepted' things. In my view, Sadie deserved neither man.

This was good but it was missing something. It involved cheating/affair and I didn't really feel like the reason for the affair was strong enough. Yes, Nate and Sadie were going thru a rough patch but what marriage doesn't. Sadie gave up too easily with Nate and gave in right away when it came to Finn. I wanted more drama, more angst and more groveling. The writing was still really good and easy to read. I wish we could've gotten Nate's POV as well.

Once we got started, we could not put this book down, reading it in pretty much one sitting! If you’re not a fan of cheating then this book isn’t for you. However, if you devour books with angst, real emotions and an engrossing story, not to mention some of THE hottest sex scenes we’ve encountered for a while, that while not overly descriptive were extremely well written and off the charts hot, then this one just might be for you!
“Sadie, you looked at me like I was…I was someone you’d loved and lost – and then found.”
The players in this story are Nathan and Sadie who’ve been together for 8 years and are currently going through a bit of a troubled patch in their marriage. It is Finn, their also married new neighbour that Sadie turns to as a shoulder to cry on when her doting and loving husband, in her eyes, becomes distant and cold, shutting down emotionally in their marriage. Comfort from Finn soon turns into attraction and lust, with both Sadie and Finn unable to deny their feelings and desires.
“This is what happens when to a man consumed by a woman he can’t have.”
Nathan has always been the perfect husband. He’s a selfless man who loves his wife, he dotes on her…Sadie is his universe. So why, for the past few months has he been shutting Sadie out of his life? What is beneath his sudden cold and aloof actions?
We were teased mercilessly by Jessica Hawkins as we became desperate to uncover the reason for Nathan’s complete personality change with conspiracy theories being bandied around like crazy. We needed to get inside Nathan’s head, though our need didn’t appear to match Sadie’s apathy towards Nathan’s retreat from her. Whilst Sadie ‘talked’ about getting to the bottom of Nathan’s change in behaviour, she didn’t appear to assertively make the effort to uncover what was bothering him, instead jumping to conclusions and driving us up the wall.
‘It may be the wrong man. It may be the wrong apartment. But I got my wish. There is someone waiting for me after all.’
Sadie was a rather self-absorbed person in our opinion, seemingly making excuses for her reasoning’s and her behaviour rather than proactively making an effort to resolve their problems. Instead finding it easier to blame others for her own shortcomings.
‘How far are they each willing to go? How far am I?”
This story did feel real and the emotions very raw, with the author exploring the relationships in order for the characters to grow and move forward. What we particularly admired in the writing was how this author didn’t make either Finn or Nathan the ‘bad’ guy and didn’t play one off against the other, resulting in us loving both these men equally. Each gripping our heart with their feelings and struggles. When Nathans issues unravelled, they were real, we felt them and our hearts hurt for him. As much as Nathan affected us, so too did Finn, our hearts aching for both these men.
“I’ll fight for us, and you will too, even if I have to make you.”
We did feel the ending let the story down in some ways. After all the heartache and struggles we went through with these characters we felt it ended a little too abruptly way too easily. We believed the story right up until the end, and although there was emotion in the ending, the ease of which is played out left us feeling a little flat. An epilogue or some ‘afters‘ relating to Sadie’s decision would have probably helped in this regard. However in saying that, we were completely engrossed throughout, unable to put it down until we hit that last page. A fabulously written, raw, painful and emotional story…..oh and did we mention…. it was hot?

Nathan Hunt, he's sort of mysterious but I really loved him. Sadie is the love of his life but things have been different. We don't know what he's really thinking until much further in the story when all is revealed. I loved him, hated him and then loved him again. I never thought I would have such a love/hate relationship with a fictional character.
"I don’t want anyone other than my husband. Nathan knows that. And I know he only wants me, even if he hasn’t shown it lately."
“I have to . . . I need to . . . make things work with Nathan. He’s my husband.”
Now Sadie is left with the biggest decision of her life. Will she fall in love with the man next door and run off into the sunset with him or will she work on repairing her broken marriage with the man she made vows to love in good times and bad? Slip of the Tongue is full of angst, sadness, tears and heartbreak but it's also wrapped up in love. I loved the twists this story took on and if anything, I really wanted more at the end. I was left hanging and I'm still dying to know how everything ended...sort of like a what happened next to all of the characters (I'm not spoiling what happens here by saying who she ends up with). This is the first I've read by Jessica Hawkins and it certainly will not be the last. Enjoy the ride, it's definitely full of bumps. 4.5 stars.

This was a tough book for me to get through, and I can’t fault the quality of the writing because it’s excellent. Perhaps I should have paid closer attention to the blurb because it makes no secret of the fact that the main character, Sadie, enters into a love affair with her neighbor, Finn. In my mind though, there’s “justifiable” cheating in a fictional world where I’m rooting for the two cheaters to get together because the partner/spouse is so annoying, abusive, and obviously just plain wrong for the lead character. Things aren’t so cut and dry in Slip of the Tongue and the prolonged affair made me very uncomfortable.
I might have enjoyed the story more if the characters were remotely appealing. Finn is in love with his wife and he basically has a good marriage, so his willingness to cheat feels more like a midlife crisis than destiny fulfilled. Sadie’s husband, Nathan, is brooding, rude, and intentionally uncommunicative through the majority of the book. His reactions toward the end are not only abrupt, but unbelievable as well.
Sadie is definitely my least favorite character. The reader is supposed to feel bad for her. I mean, she’s a good wife and her husband up and checks out of their marriage seemingly overnight. However, she’s spoiled, hypocritical, and selfish, and somehow she manages to justify all her actions. She prides herself on never feeling guilty about her choices (Is she inhuman?), and her lack of remorse made her very unsympathetic to me. Honestly, I was so sick of the lot of them that I skimmed through much of the middle portion.
Where this book does succeed is in shining a spotlight on the intricacies of marriage. You know the expression there are two sides to every story? It couldn’t be more true than in this case. I found myself taking one character’s side only to gain a little more information and then take the other person’s side. I went back and forth so many times I got whiplash. The story emphasizes how lack of communication can snowball into the death of a relationship. The book also raises some thought provoking questions. Do people really change after marriage? Is the intention behind the way in which we show love outweighed by the quantity of loving acts? When do you fight for your marriage and when do you give up?
This book in no way glamorizes adultery and if it’s a sensitive subject for you, I’d pass. Cheating aside, my inability to connect with the characters made this a less than stellar read for me.

Holy roller coaster ride! This was a first for me by Jessica Hawkins and the writing was awesome. This book had my emotions all over the place and took me out of my comfort zone. It's a story about the trials and hardship of marriage, about deciding whether to face situations together as a team or going down a different path alone.
"Marriage isn’t easy. Everyone goes through rough patches."
Sadie and Nathan Hunt have been married for five years, together for seven. Everything was great in their marriage - or so Sadie thought. Suddenly, Nate begins to shut Sadie out. He becomes distant, moody, and starts coming home late. He stops communicating. All of the signs are leading Sadie to believe he's having an affair. She doesn't want to believe it, but when he won't talk to her, what else is she supposed to think.
"My Nathan would never cheat on me. But I haven’t seen my Nathan in months."
Finn Cohen is the new guy who just moved into the apartment next door. He's gorgeous and notices Sadie right away. At first, Sadie is just being a nice neighbor. She tells him where to go for the best breakfast, makes food for him because he's alone and all of his stuff isn't unpacked yet, and even helps him unpack some things.
"It may be the wrong man. It may be the wrong apartment. But I got my wish. There is someone waiting for me after all."
She's tired of coming home to an empty apartment all of the time. Soon she finds herself turning to Finn to talk to and for comfort. Sadie finds it difficult to stay away from him and when his cute flirting becomes more serious, she finds herself struggling to say no.
The angst in this book killed me and I can't lie, I loved it. I loved and hated this story at times. I loved that it was written so beautifully and in a way that had me completely consumed with the story. I hated that at times I was torn between which man I wanted Sadie to be with. I was rooting for them both. I felt like it should have been obvious, but for me it wasn't. I wished at times this was told in dual POV so that I could've had Nate's side of the story. I would have liked just a little more at the end. Overall, it was a great reminder that communication is key for any marriage. Don't take it for granted and practice it often!
I look forward to reading more by Jessica Hawkins.

If you loved the Cityscape series, you will absolutely love this one! And, if you haven’t read Cityscape, I guarantee once you read Slip of the Tongue it will be the next book you devour.
Once again, Jessica Hawkins has somehow gotten me excited about toeing the line of infidelity. There is just something about the way her writing and choice of words mixed with her signature sexiness creates the perfect storm of a story. Jessica has an uncanny ability to pull you in literally from the very first page and not let go. The descriptiveness of not only Sadie’s thoughts and feelings but of the sights, sounds, and surroundings pick you up and put you inside the story to experience it right alongside Sadie, Nathan, and Finn. Everything is palpable, and Jessica makes you feel it all.
This book was ridiculously real, full of anticipation, and simply AMAZING. Jessica’s stories are always mature and well written with likable characters and Slip of the Tongue is no exception. Her writing is smart with a wonderful style and flow that had me flying through the book without even realizing it.

We were teased mercilessly by Jessica Hawkins as we became desperate to uncover the reason for Nathan’s complete personality change with conspiracy theories being bandied around like crazy. We needed to get inside Nathan’s head, though our need didn’t appear to match Sadie’s apathy towards Nathan’s retreat from her. Whilst Sadie ‘talked’ about getting to the bottom of Nathan’s change in behaviour, she didn’t appear to assertively make the effort to uncover what was bothering him, instead jumping to conclusions and driving us up the wall.
‘It may be the wrong man. It may be the wrong apartment. But I got my wish. There is someone waiting for me after all.’
Sadie was a rather self-absorbed person in our opinion, seemingly making excuses for her reasoning’s and her behaviour rather than proactively making an effort to resolve their problems. Instead finding it easier to blame others for her own shortcomings.
‘How far are they each willing to go? How far am I?”
This story did feel real and the emotions very raw, with the author exploring the relationships in order for the characters to grow and move forward. What we particularly admired in the writing was how this author didn’t make either Finn or Nathan the ‘bad’ guy and didn’t play one off against the other, resulting in us loving both these men equally. Each gripping our heart with their feelings and struggles. When Nathans issues unravelled, they were real, we felt them and our hearts hurt for him. As much as Nathan affected us, so too did Finn, our hearts aching for both these men.
“I’ll fight for us, and you will too, even if I have to make you.”
We did feel the ending let the story down in some ways. After all the heartache and struggles we went through with these characters we felt it ended a little too abruptly way too easily. We believed the story right up until the end, and although there was emotion in the ending, the ease of which is played out left us feeling a little flat. An epilogue or some ‘afters‘ relating to Sadie’s decision would have probably helped in this regard. However in saying that, we were completely engrossed throughout, unable to put it down until we hit that last page. A fabulously written, raw, painful and emotional story…..oh and did we mention…. it was hot?

Honestly, I don't know how I feel about this one.
Only reason I am giving it a 3 star rating is because Jessica Hawkins truly is a good writer.
I usually have troubles with love triangles, and I just can't seem to past my issues with them.
Also, if you can't stand cheating in novels, this one is not for you.
Story is about a married couple who somehow start to pull apart and distance themselves from each other. Their emotional separation is subtle at first, but become much more obvious as time moves on.
Heroine starts seeing their next door neighbour and feelings of betrayal begin to emerge.
I couldn't connect with the characters at all, I don't understand the reasons why their marriage went to sh***, I can't figure out why she choose the man she did at the end... blah...
I can understand that it is important to occasionally get some distance from your partner, but choices this characters made just don't make much sense to me.
I ended up skimming through some chapters.
I believe the premise of the book is to get people to think about forgiveness and love, but I guess if you haven't undergone through marriage troubles yourself, it is hard to understand.

Slip of the Tongue by Jessica Hawkins
4 stars!!!
This was one of those frustrating reads for me, frustrating yet totally understandable…a bit of a contradiction you might say but what Jessica Hawkins delivered was an honest, relatable account of a typical married couple. A marriage is nothing without communication and for some reason it was this that became lacking for a couple that always had communication at the forefront of their relationship. It was this lack of communication that led to misunderstandings and a lot of mistakes. It was a tough read, my heart was in my mouth and at times I wanted to cringe but I could just see it happening to so many others…albeit not as quickly.
Sadie and Nathan were Mr & Mrs Perfect, they were the envy of all their friends having the perfect marriage, the perfect life, each had put the other on their perfect pedestal to cement their undying love and their perfect relationship…until it wasn’t.
One day Nathan stopped talking to his wife Sadie, they hardly communicated, hardly touched, hardly saw each other. This was going from living in the Sahara to living in the North Pole, from one extreme to another. Having promised to never shut the other out Sadie has no idea what has happened or what has changed. The signs all point to one thing but is that the case?
Feeling lost and lonely and incredibly heartbroken Sadie is at a low ebb, until the man across the hall moves in and they start up a friendship, but will it lead to more?
Sadie and Nathan were incredibly frustrating, at times I wanted to scream and throw my kindle, it was exhausting!!! This was an emotional read but not just in a tear jerking sense but in that I’m married and I can totally relate to everything that is happening emotional state. I was reading and thinking at the same time…I must communicate more…I must communicate more…. I must communicate more. I would never want to put my husband in a position whereby he felt I didn’t love him or want him, while reading I vowed to tell him…often.
If you feel unloved and unwanted after having it all by the bucket load it would make you think the worst, I know I would and that is exactly the situation that Sadie finds herself in. But rather than attack the situation head on she just lets it get worse steadily over a few months, she sits and stews and wallows in self-pity. While I could relate to her feelings I did find her extremely selfish at times and it was this that made her hard to warm up to. For someone that had such a strong marriage I just felt that she gave up too easily and put herself in an even worse position even if it gave her the affection that she was desperately seeking.
Nathan is just as much to blame in this clusterfuck of epic proportions, he has his reasons but the way they manifested in his actions were to the detriment of his marriage even more. As an outsider looking in it is easy to see the mistakes but surely even he could see that he was not helping the situation at all??
I have to say that the ending for me was a bit too convenient, I just couldn’t believe Nathan’s actions. I wanted more at this juncture…more fight, it was all too quick and clean. However, this was a book that I couldn’t put down, it was entertaining, it was thought provoking and it was incredibly addictive.

I will love you the same in the dark as I do in the light
I'd read more contemporary romance if they were written like this. Jessica Hawkin's writing style felt flawless. My heart was in my throat the entire time; the author managed to keep me on a knife's edge until the end.
I haven't read a book with such deeply flawed, unlikable characters since reading The Masquers by Natasha Peters. I'm impressed by the author's bravery and skill in depicting such characters. I'm in a book bliss right now (not book hangover, yet :). It feels like awhile since I came across a book, especially a contemporary romance, I enjoyed as much as this one.
Full review to come. Actually, whenever I read a five star book I like this much I sometimes feel so blissed out I don't have it in me to write a full review. I just want to quote the entire book so I can come back and reread my favorite parts. The cheating is likely the most controversial part about this book. I highly recommend this if you're a fan of love triangles and don't mind cheating in your romance. I have to add this is one of the best love triangles I've read in a contemporary romance. Like Natasha Peters, the author utilized first person POV to play with the reader's perceptions of each character. At one point in the book I was rooting for both men, and truly wasn't sure who the heroine would end up with until the end.
