In 1985, the sudden death of Dinah Jefferies’ fourteen year old son brought her life to a standstill. She drew on that experience, and on her own childhood spent in Malaya during the 1950s to write her debut novel, The Separation. The guns piled high on the hall table when the rubber planters came into town for a party, the colour and noise of Chinatown, the houses on stilts, and the lizards that left their tails behind.
Now living in Gloucestershire, Dinah once lived in Tuscany working as an au pair for an Italian countess; she has also lived in a ‘hippy’ rock’n roll commune based in an Elizabethan manor house, but started writing when she was living in a small 16th Century village in Spain.

In 1952 Nicole was an eighteen year old half French, half Vietnamese woman living with her French father and older sister Sylvie. Nicole had always felt overshadowed by Sylvie and when Sylvie was given the family silk business to run on her own, with Nicole only receiving an old silk shop which had long been vacant, she was once again reminded of how inferior she was. She was resentful but determined to show her father that she could make her business a success without his help.
Her silk shop was located in the Vietnamese quarter of Hanoi; when she first visited she was shocked at the state of the shop but with hard work had it looking pristine. But she was nervous as well – the area was filled with rebels who were determined to end the French rule and the threat of war seemed imminent. Her father disagreed of course – he was disdainful of her worries, as was Sylvie. But Nicole was to discover a shocking truth about her family that changed her life forever. And in doing so saw her become involved with Tran, one of the Vietnamese rebels.
With Mark, an American silk trader making her heart flutter and Tran offering her a solution to her conflicted emotions, she had no idea who to trust. Nicole was uncovering secrets she had no desire to know; but once learned she had no idea what to do with them. What would Nicole’s future be in an era of war, corruption and family secrets?
Dinah Jefferies has an amazing way with words! The Silk Merchant’s Daughter is a fabulous novel which shows the emotional tearing apart of one person born with two distinct heritages. I really enjoyed Nicole’s character though my favourite character was Lisa. Beautifully capturing the streets and alleys in Hanoi in a way that made me sure I was actually there, The Silk Merchant’s Daughter is one I highly recommend.

I read Jefferies' previous book The Tea Planter's Wife when it came out last year and was surprisingly captivated by it. In consequence, I was really excited to read The Silk Merchant's Daughter. I was, overall, sadly, quite disappointed by it. It's the story of a young French-Vietnamese girl, Nicole, the eponymous silk merchant's daughter. She and her sister have been brought up by their father and the cook after the death of their mother under circumstances not spoken-of. The good points of this book first: vivid setting and sense of time and place - Vietnam and Hanoi in the 1950s, interesting side characters. The bad: the writing felt rushed - it was choppy in places and overly descriptive and flowery in others, the main characters really didn't step off the pages at all for me, alas, and at points in the story I kept losing interest. The colonial highhandedness and the Vietminh independence fighters had lots of potential and was the most interesting bit of the book for me, it should have been an excellent foil for Nicole's story and growth into womanhood, but instead I felt detached from her story completely. Readable, but to be honest if I wasn't reading an ARC for review I might not have bothered finishing, I would have skimmed. From a library point of view, though, it would be interesting to see how different readers reacted to the story!

Η συγγραφέας έχει υφάνει μια εξαιρετική πλοκή, χορταστική, με μια πληθώρα συναισθημάτων· η αδελφική αγάπη ανταγωνίζεται με τη ζήλια, η εμπιστοσύνη στην οικογένεια και τις αξίες με την αβεβαιότητα και τη δυσπιστία, η πίστη στα ιδανικά και τους ανθρώπους με τη φρίκη της συνειδητοποίησης του πόσο σκληρή μπορεί να γίνει η ανθρώπινη φύση. Dinah Jeffries is fast becoming one of my new favourite historical fiction writers. What makes her books so intriguing - and different - is her stories take place in such exotic locations. Unlike a lot of popular historical fiction novels which predominantly feature Europe as their settings, Jeffries chooses to create vivid portraits of countries and times that are relatively unheard of. In this case, the author has created a beautiful story set during the fifties of Vietnam under French rule. Although I consider myself a history lover, I had known little of the war in which the French attempted to conquer the Vietnamese.
Nicole is caught between two worlds and her dual nationalities. Coming from a French father and a Vietnamese mother, Nicole faces the prejudice of being mixed race in a country segregated by conflict. Despite living a relatively sheltered life, Nicole is soon thrust into the horror of war. Unlike her father and sister, she is torn between her French parent and her Vietnamese heritage.
Jeffries is a wonderful storyteller. I love the way she manages to capture the essence of the countries in which her stories are told. Her writing is beautifully descriptive and in this case, the book does not disappoint. At times harrowing, at others heartbreaking and then romantic, the reader is taken on a journey alongside Nicole as she finds love and tries to survive in such a dangerous environment.
This is only the third novel by Jeffries, but I will be without a doubt be ordering her next book which is due out in the new year.
Zanimljiv roman sa radnjom smještenom u burni period Vijetnama pedesetih godina prošlog vijeka u vrijeme borbe za samostalnost od Francuske. Zbivanja pratimo iz perspektive Nikol, kćerke Francuza i Vijetnamke, što uzrokuje njenu potragu za vlastitim identitetom, potrebu za svrstavanjem na jednu, pravu stranu, ali koja je strana zapravo prava? Svemu tome pridružuje se i njena potraga za ljubavlju, složen odnos sa sestrom i ocem...Čitanjem ovog egzotičnog romana saznala sam jako puno o Vijetnamu, o tamošnjim običajima, ljudima, hrani, prirodi... Pored nešto zamjerki za određene nelogičnosti i nedorađenosti u radnji, radi se ipak o veoma dobrom i uzbudljivom romanu.

In timpul invaziei franceze si americane asupra statului, vietnamezii lupta sa isi redobandeasca independenta. Dar Nina oare pentru ce sau pentru cine lupta? "Era foarte usor sa pierzi notiunea timpului cand te simteai pierduta in tine insuti." "Cand nu stii in cine poti sa ai incredere, devii vulnerabil si un cuvant rostit neglijent ar putea fi un dezastru." Este un roman de fictiune istorica, frumos construit si captivant, dar personajul principal mi s-a parut un pic ciudatel, parca ii lipseste ceva. Per total este o lectura interesanta, despre tradare, dragoste, coruptie, crima, tragedii personale si colective, avand la baza intamplari istorice reale din acea perioada zbuciumata.

Τα περισσότερα ρομαντικά μυθιστορήματα εποχής τοποθετούνται σε χώρες και μέρη της Ευρωπαϊκής επικράτειας, ίσως επειδή η πλειοψηφία των συγγραφέων θεωρεί πως είναι πιο εύκολη ως προς την αξιοποιήσή της, αλλά και ως προς την έρευνα που απαιτείται. Η Jeffries τολμάει, κάθε φορά, να κάνει τη διαφορά, τοποθετώντας τους ήρωες και την αφήγησή της σε μέρη εξωτικά, απροσπέλαστα, θεωρητικά άγνωστα σε εμάς, παρουσιάζοντάς μας μια οπτική του τόπου και της ιστορίας του για την οποία, αν όχι δεν είχαμε ιδέα, είχαμε απλά ακουστά. Έτσι και στην προκειμένη, επιλέγει ως τόπο δράσης της μια επαρχιακή περιοχή του Βιετνάμ, ενός τόπου βασανισμένου από πολέμους και κατακτητές, επιλέγοντας, μάλιστα, μία από τις πιο σκοτεινές και αιματηρές εποχές του, η ιστορία του οποίου σημαδεύτηκε από γεγονότα που άλλαξαν άρδην την πορεία του μέσα στο πέρασμα των χρόνων που ακολούθησαν. Σ' ένα δεύτερο επίπεδο, και πέραν των ιστορικών τοποθετήσεων και αναλύσεων, η Jeffries επιλέγει πάντοτε την δημιουργία πορτρέτων χαρακτήρων και την ανάλυση αυτών, τόσο μέσω των διάφορων καταστάσεων με τις οποίες έρχονται αντιμέτωποι, όσο και με τον προσωπικών, εσωτερικών τους συγκρούσεων που θα καθαρίσουν στο τέλος, σύμφωνα με τις αποφάσεις τους, το ποιο πραγματικά είναι και ποιος είναι ο αληθινός τους προορισμός. Η σχέση των δύο αδερφών βρίσκεται στον πυρήνα της αφήγησης, και, εμφανώς, σκοπός της συγγραφέως είναι να τις ταξιδέψει στα μονοπάτια μιας πορείας που θα καταλάβουν τι πραγματικά σημαίνει η μία για την άλλη, καλώντας τες να βρουν ένα κώδικα επικοινωνίας, ξεπερνώντας τις διαφορές τους, ή ν' αποχαιρετιστούν για πάντα επιλέγοντας ξεχωριστούς δρόμους στη ζωή προσπερνώντας την αγάπη. Όμως, εκτός από την μεταξύ τους σχέση, η Jeffries αναλύει με εύστοχο και διεξοδικό τρόπο και τα ψυχογραφήματα της κάθε μίας προσωπικότητας, που είναι πολύ διαφορετική η μία από την άλλη και που παρ' όλα ταύτα, βασίζεται στις ίδιες ενδόμυχες επιθυμίες. Το πιο σημαντικό όλων, όμως, είναι το ότι τις καλεί να συγκρουστούν με τη διττή φύση τους, με την ταυτότητα της καταγωγής τους, προκαλεί την προσωπική τους ηθική και συνείδηση αλλά και αυτά που προστάζει η καρδιά τους κόντρα σε αυτά που προστάζει η λογική.
Και κάπου εκεί, ανάμεσα στην αδελφική αντιπαλότητα που ψάχνει το δρόμο προς την κατανόηση και τη λύτρωση, ανάμεσα στην γοητεία ενός τόπου μαγευτικού και τη βία που αυτός βιώνει σε μια προσπάθεια να υπερασπιστεί την ελευθερία του, ανθίζει και ο έρωτας. Ένας έρωτας διχασμένος αλλά την ίδια στιγμή, καταλυτικός και απόλυτος και που σε μεγάλο βαθμό θα καθορίσει καταστάσεις, χωρίς αυτό να σημαίνει απαραίτητα πως στο τέλος θα επηρεάσει συνειδήσεις. Η αφηγηματική ροή είναι έντονη, γεμάτη παραστατικές εικόνες, στιγμές όμορφες και ρομαντικές και άλλες, απόλυτα τρομακτικές και δυσοίωνες, μα την ίδια στιγμή ολοκληρωτικά ρεαλιστικές, ακόμα κι αν γίνονται σκληρές. Όμως έτσι είναι και η ίδια η ζωή. I've enjoyed Dinah Jeffries previous books but this one didn't quite hit the mark for me in the same way. The writing felt choppy and abrupt in places and I was left wondering why the previous paragraph jumped to unrelated topics on numerous occasions.
The setting for his book was Vietnam and I absolutely loved the setting for Nicole's story. The description of the city and it's diverse quarters were excellent, providing visuals, smells and culture. Vietnam in post WW2 era was politically unsettled with much Vietnamese unrest at the French leadership. Nicole's family is in the middle of this for a number of reasons, her father's work for the french and on a more personal level, Nicole's mixed race status. Nicole didn't fit in with the French or the Vietnamese. As with Jeffries other books, family relationships were key to the story and I enjoyed the development of her relationship with her sister. There is a romantic theme and an American, Mark shows great interest in Nicole.
So much about this book held promise but in this case, whilst I liked the story line and setting, some issues with the writing just got in the way.

Why did i read this book?? I couldn’t connect to the characters at all. The characters did not even make sense and felt as if they were conjured randomly. The story itself very random and there wasn’t a good flow. In the end i was just skimming through pages just to get done with the book. I was hoping that the book would atleast give me an insight into the history of the wars in Vietnam but alas i was only met with disappointment
Non posso dire che questo libro sia brutto, perché in effetti non lo è: si fa leggere fino alla fine. Ma ha anche troppe pecche per meritare un commento entusiasta.
L'impressione finale è che l'autrice abbia fatto un gran pasticcio: avrebbe potuto scrivere un romance dignitosissimo se si fosse concentrata sulle dinamiche personali (il rapporto tra Nicole e la sorella, la sua relazione con Mark, il triangolo di gelosie, bugie e sospetti, che già da soli bastavano a riempire un libro, senza bisogno di appiccicarli sullo sfondo del dramma storico, al confronto del quale diventano necessariamente ridicoli), oppure avrebbe potuto scrivere un appassionante romanzo storico se si fosse concentrata sugli eventi che travolgono la vita di Nicole, che la portano - suo malgrado - a vivere il momento turbolento attraversato dal Vietnam agli inizi degli anni '50 (tra l'altro avrebbe potuto farlo da un punto di vista davvero privilegiato, quello di una ragazza per metà francese e per metà vietnamita, con un'anima divisa in due che avrebbe potuto davvero mostrare in sé il dramma del paese lacerato). Invece il libro non riesce a essere né l'uno, né l'altro. Si oscilla in modo sbilanciato tra i due generi, finendo per svilirli entrambi. Alcuni dialoghi, poi, sono davvero terribili (stucchevoli o improbabili), per non parlare delle apparizioni (o sparizioni) dei personaggi che appaiono troppo "telefonate" e sempre provvidenziali. Peccato, perché la materia era interessante; se la scrittura fosse stata più profonda e focalizzata su un obiettivo, questa lettura avrebbe potuto essere molto, molto più piacevole.
This a superb historical novel. I found it full of charm, atmosphere and composed of all the elements that go into producing a cracking read! Set in the 1950s French Indochina it is a story about a search for personal identity, family secrets, deception, betrayal, love and war. The author is talented in her descriptions that are so vivid and vibrant, that you feel as if you are right there.
Nicole is given a disused silk shop in the Vietnamese quarter of Hanoi whilst her sister, Sylvie, is given control of the family silk business. Wanting to prove to her father that she can be successful in building the shop into a going concern without his help, Nicole works hard. Amidst all this, there is a rebellion looking to end French rule in the city. After discovering family secrets, Nicole gets involved with a Vietnamese rebel. She is also drawn to Mark, an American silk trader. She is unsure who she can trust.
We follow Nicole's story through family secrets, corruption, intrigue and war. The author captures the tensions, fear and anxieties of living through war and turbulent times. I cannot recommend this book enough, it was a fabulous read. Many thanks to Penguin for a copy of the book via netgalley.
Mi-a placut stilul de scris al autoarei precum si faptul ca aceasta imbina istoria Vietnamului cu o poveste despre familie, alegeri si nu in ultimul rand iubire. Nicole este o tanara rebela de 18 ani, pe jumatate vietnameza, pe jumatate franceza care care primeste de la tatal sau un mic magazin care comercializează mătasea, in timp ce sora sa Sylvie primeste toate afacerile familiei. In acest cadru isi face aparitia un misterios tanar american, si un naționalist vietnamez care lupta pentru restaurarea regimul comunist si eliberarea de sub stapaniarea franceza. Aceasta se simte atrasa de amandoi si in scurt timp va fi nevoita sa aleaga intre cei doi, si in acelasi timp intre cele doua regimuri. Mi-a placut mai mult decat “Sotia plantatorului de ceai” si mi-a placut sa aflu detalii despre istoria Vietnamului precum si peisajul exotic descris in paginile cartii.

Nu cunoșteam cărțile acestei scriitoare, dar presimt ca vom fi bune prietene. Imi place modul in care descrie, pare că se apropie de Lisa See, detaliile par foarte reale și simt ca ma transpune in lumea vietnamezilor. A fost o lectură ce mi-a creionat Indochina Franceză, povestea lui Nicole - căutarea identității, a familiei, despre razboi, ură și dragoste. Am adorat descrierile despre mirosul lămâilor, al mâncării, culoarea mătăsii și a aleilor din zona respectivă.
Nicole este captiva celor două identități: vietnameză sau franțuzoaică. Deci, este metisă. Iar în perioada asta, mai ales în zonele menționate, acest lucru era foarte greu tolerat.
Nu știam multe lucruri despre Vietman sau despre razboiul pe care toți acei oameni au fosr nevoiți să îl accepte, deci cu atât mai tare mi-a plăcut. Mi-am propus chiar sa incerc doua feluri de mâncare menționate în carte: banh xeo și bun cha. Primește 4 stele din partea mea deoarece ultima parte m-a dezamagit enorm. Aș fi vrut ca autoarea să ofere mai multe detalii despre război, să contureze mai mult și personajele secundare despre care oricum Nicole nu primea prea multe informații, totul era mult prea secret. Nicole NU a fost evidențiată ca fiind un personaj perfect, și mi-a plăcut că era umană, dar nu am înțeles de ce era atât de inocentă și credulă într-o perioadă în care oamenii erau suspicioși și duri.

Όταν αποφασίζει να πάρει την ζωή στα χέρια της και να βγει στο αληθινό κόσμο, όλα γύρω της μπερδεύονται και η ίδια νιώθει τον φόβο και την απελπισία να της χαδεύουν με το παγωμένο χάδι τους το κόσμο της. Φοβάται ότι όλα αυτά που πιστεύει έχουν χαθεί και εκείνη πρέπει να διαλέξει το σωστό δρόμο αλλά όταν δε μπορεί να εμπιστευτεί κανέναν βαδίζει αβέβαια σε μονοπάτια στρωμένα με ροδοπέταλα άλλα με πολύ μυτερά αγκάθια. Και όπως και το μετάξι, λίγο πριν το τέλος της επεξεργασίας του έτσι και η Νικόλ παραδίδεται στην μοίρα της, στην μοίρα που άλλοι έπλασαν για αυτή, αλλά η διάφορα είναι ότι βρίσκει την δύναμη να επαναστατήσει, όχι πάντα με τους καλύτερους οιωνούς αλλά τίποτα δε είναι εύκολο Ακόμη και το μονοπάτι για την ευτυχία έχει νάρκες.

Τα μονοπάτια που διαλέγει δε είναι εύκολα. Οι επιλογές της ελάχιστες. Εμπιστοσύνη δείχνει μόνο στην δική της δύναμη, καθώς αυτά που ήξερε, κατέρρευσαν. Για την οικογένεια της είναι ένα μαύρο πρόβατο μα στην πραγματικότητα είναι ο καλός λύκος. Ένα λυκάκι που ακόμη και στους ανθρώπους που την πλήγωσαν βλέπει μόνο τον κάλο και πληγωμένο τους εαυτό γιατί έμαθε να ξεχωρίζει το δάσος και όχι να εστιάζει στο δέντρο
Τσατίστηκα σε πολλά σημεία της ψυχής της Μάζι της. Την αγάπησα για αυτά που καταφέρανε χτίσει μόνη της και αυτά που την πλήγωναν τα έκανε να φαίνονται μικρά, γιατί πίσω από τα άσχημα που έζησε κατάφερε να μάθει καλύτερα τον εαυτό της και της αντοχές της.
Και αυτό είναι το σημαντικό. Να μάθεις να αγωνίζεσαι αλλά να ξέρείς ότι δε το κάνεις γιατί έτσι πρέπει αλλά γιατί αυτά θα γίνουν σημάδια εμπειρίας στην ψυχή σου.
9 στα 10 γιατί ήθελα λίγο παραπάνω την ψυχογράφησα του χαρακτήρα της Συλβί που έπαιξε καθοριστικό ρόλο στην ζωή της Νικόλ.
ΥΓ: Αν σας άρεσε το Αηδόνα της Hannah Kristin σίγουρα θα σας αρέσει και αυτό αν και για μένα ή γυναίκα από μετάξι είναι πολύ καλύτερο βιβλίο
It's rare for me to give a one-star rating. But all I can really say about this book is BORING!! This has to be one of the dullest books I've ever read - and it felt so long because of it. Normally I can polish off a 400 page book in a matter of days. But this one I could only read for short bursts before getting totally bored and fed up, so I kept putting off picking it back up.
Far from feeling any sympathy for Nicole she came across as simply childish and petty. Because of her naivety and narrow experiences, I didn't feel immersed in the culture of Hanoi and got no insight into the real situation happening from either the French or Vietnamese point of view. The 'plot' such as it was dragged on and on, but still felt quite simplistic. During a highly unsettled and dangerous time in Hanoi, Nicole seemed to come through remarkably unscathed. Despite some obstacles and even a spell in prison, it all seemed quite superficial and just too easy for her to get out of them. All in all, it felt a bit like we were stuck inside a 'bubble' with Nicole, whilst the more interesting and realistic story, events and characters were all outside. The novel might've been far more interesting if it had been told from two perspectives - perhaps Sylvie's (or even O-Lan's or Trans') as well as Nicole's.
This is the second Dinah Jefferies novel I've read and that second chance was the last one I'm afraid. So I've removed "The Separation" from my reading list and won't be likely to spend any time reading another of her books.

Cred că am auzit cu toții despre războiul din Vietnam. Dar câți dintre noi știu cu adevărat ce a presupus asta, ce frică a măcinat sufletele oamenilor care se temeau pentru viața lor, cum s-a schimbat viață celor care au rămas acolo și cum au supraviețuit războiului. Știam în linii mari despre acest fapt istoric, însă Dinah Jeffries a creat un tablou atât de amplu și de detaliat, încât m-am transpus cu totul în poveste și am simțit pe pielea mea ororile acelui război nedrept și crud.
Fiica negustorului de mătase este o poveste atât de vie și de colorată, încât îți este cu neputință să îi dai drumul din brațe. O mirosi, o guști, o simți cu toată ființa ta. Este o poveste superbă despre război și despre cruzimea oamenilor, despre familie și legăturile ei complicate, despre dragostea care te vindecă și dragostea care te întărește, despre drumul căutării de sine și nu în ultimul rând despre iertare.
Mi-a plăcut foarte mult. Chiar un pic mai mult decât Soția plantatorului de ceai, de aceeași autoare. Recomand cu caldură.
Dit boek leest niet zo makkelijk weg. Enerzijds door de kleine letterdruk, anderzijds door de vele beschrijvingen. Het mooie verhaal maakt dit echter ruimschoots goed. Een heel gevarieerde verhaallijn vol spanning.
L'ambientazione è molto interessante dal punto di vista storico-sociale; ci troviamo infatti alla fine del colonialismo francese in quella che veniva chiamata Indocina - ovvero il Vietnam - con la protagonista, Nicole, che è nata dal matrimonio tra un mercante di seta francese e una vietnamita, che però è morta nel darla alla luce. Per tutta l'infanzia Nicole è stata maltrattata dal padre e dalla sorella maggiore di cinque anni, che l'hanno fatta sentire in colpa per la morte della madre. La sorella, Sylvie, le ha sempre fatto scherzi di pessimo gusto, facendola sentire brutta e meno elegante di lei solo perché Sylvie ha preso i lineamenti francesi del padre mentre Nicole quelli asiatici della madre. Quando poi il padre prende a lavorare per il governo francese e lascia tutto il commercio di seta nelle mani di Sylvie, Nicole si deve accontentare di un negozietto di sete nella zona vecchia di Hanoi, con la scusa che Sylvie ha studiato in America mentre Nicole non ha mai portato a termine gli studi. Nicole è dilaniata tra la sua appartenenza sia al popolo colonizzatore, sia alla popolazione indigena. Nessuna delle due parti, infatti, la accetta, considerandola appartenente all'altra fazione, e il fatto di non aver mai conosciuto la madre e non aver mai sentito parlare di lei se non dalla cuoca francese, Lisa, la destabilizza dal punto di vista affettivo. Anche per questo motivo, il suo cuore sembra indeciso tra l'americano Mark - che però le è conteso dalla sorella - e il vietnamita Trân, un ribelle che la convince a unirsi temporaneamente ai Vietminh quando assiste di nascosto a una scena di crudeltà del padre verso un giovane vietnamita. Nicole ben presto scoprirà che non esiste una parte giusta e una sbagliata, ma in guerra tutte le fazioni sono crudeli e spietate. La sua doppia appartenenza, però, la fa sentire traditrice da qualunque parte si schieri. Anche se dal punto di vista storico il romanzo è interessante - almeno per chi non conosce bene la storia di quell'angolo di mondo dal 1952 al 1954 - e la trama è congegnata piuttosto bene, purtroppo lo spessore dei suoi personaggi è davvero imbarazzante, visto che Nicole è più piatta e superficiale di un foglio di carta velina. Da lettrice non sono riuscita affatto a empatizzare con lei, forse perché l'autrice non riesce a utilizzare un buon discorso indiretto libero, per cui, pur vedendo la storia dal suo punto di vista, non sono riuscita a entrare davvero nei suoi pensieri. Paradossalmente, Sylvia è più interessante di lei, con la sua gelosia e i problemi psicologici collegati alla morte prematura della madre. Un po' troppo didascalica la parte che riguarda l'allevamento dei bachi da seta; mentre inverosimile l'insediamento di Nicole nel negozio di sete, quando in pochissimi giorni riesce a ripulire, tingere le pareti, tagliare e cucire le tende del negozio, cucire un numero spropositato di borsette e di scialli e paralumi da vendere alle ragazze vietnamite.
The Silk Merchant's Daughter is my first book by Dinah Jefferies and it won't be the last for sure. What an amazing and captivating story it is. I love the kind of books that transport you to another place, to another time (one you have no idea about) and make you part of it. And this is one of these reads. In fact, one thing I love about historical fiction is learning about the past, our past, and with this story I learned a lot.
The book is set in Hanoi, Vietnam, in the early 50s and focuses on Nicole and her struggles with identity and belonging. With a French father and a (late) Vietnamese mother, Nicole has inherited her mother's looks so she is often called "métisse", something that makes her feel uncomfortable and out of place. Her older sister though has their father's looks and seems to be the preferred daughter. Nicole's self doubts only increase as the story unfolds and Vietnam becomes a very dangerous place. The French government is loosing its power as the nationalist Vietminh gain power and support. And soon, Nicole finds herself having to decide which side she is going to support.
Between all this turmoil, there's also space for romance. Early in the story, Nicole meets a dashing American that makes her heart flutter. But he seems to have many secrets and a special connection with her sister. So when an enthusiastic and persuasive young Vietnamese enters her life, she must decide, once more, which life she is going to choose. An extremely difficult decision when you no longer knows who's your friend and who's your enemy. The story surprised me more than once and I certainly had no idea how it was going to unfold. Something that kept me glued to its pages for hours.
Something that Dinah Jefferies perfectly accomplishes with this novel is transporting you to Vietnam in those difficult years. She has a way with words that make you feel part of the place she is describing. Her attention to detail is incredible, with generous descriptions of the surroundings, the buildings, the food and the smells, even the touch. I felt like I could almost touch the silk rolls and hear the old buildings cracking under my feet.
The Silk Merchant's Daughter is a story with many layers. There's war but also love, betrayal but also forgiveness, doubts but also certainties. It captures perfectly what it means being part of two completely different cultures but not belonging to either. It's something that has made me think a lot and I'm sure this story will stay with me for a long time. A novel I highly recommend.
A full review will be given nearer the time but I have just turned the last page and need to say how good this book is and how interesting. A fascinating period in history, a mix of cultures that will have you realising just what it must have been like to have lived in French IndoChina during the 1950s and some of the most compelling characters Dinah has created.
The settings evoked are created via Dinah's paintbrush for this is one colourful painting she has created. The gorgeous book proof came with a sumptuous silk ribbon tied around it and I almost couldn't bare to open it - but when I did, it slid off and revealed the silky and dangerous world of the Silk Merchants. Reading this was a very immersive experience - the toil, sweat and tears of the work, the fear and foreboding of the warring faction, a city split in two and the turmoil of a young girl, half Vietnamese, half French who felt she didn't belong anywhere.
A fascinating period of history which I now feel I have been eloquently introduced to via Dinah's capable hands.

How Dinah Jefferies paints such vivid and evocative pictures with words I don’t know. Each word is a brush on the canvas, each chapter a new part of the picture until the very end when you can step back and marvel at the work of art in front of you.
This was a really interesting read on so many fronts – the cultural issues, the time and setting and the historical context all created a world I had no experience of but which I felt immediately drawn to. What must it be like to feel as if you belong nowhere?
The historical setting and portrayal of war was fascinating as it was brutal. When Nicole starts siding with them, I felt on edge and worried for her. The heat and chaos merged with the silky softness and luxury of the silk industry and the worlds came together in an intoxicating mix.
This novel really is rich in history as well as culture and you can feel so many emotions as to what it must have been like to live in colonial Vietnam. In a family with such divided loyalties. Nicole was a great character who I felt close to as I did with Lisa the housemaid. The plot played out beautifully and I was drawn in, and didn’t stop to read until I had finished the book , late one night and then I couldn’t sleep for thinking about it.

З іншого боку – в’єтнамська їжа, в’єтнамські традиції шовківництва, в’єтнамські пісні, в’єтнамське уявлення про відновлення національної та соціальної справедливості – вогнисте, справедливе, комуністичне. Обираючи таку героїню, Дайна Джефферіс користається з можливостей на повних обертах: колонізатори і колонізовані, ЦРУ і В’єтмінь, французька в’язниця і комуністичні “табори перевиховання”, “Вони ніколи не підуть з миром” VS “Вони ніколи не дістануться до Ханоя… ой!”. Авторка береться за те, щоби виткати барвисте шовкове полотно культурних конфліктів, політичних вузлів, ідеологічних розбіжностей і людських трагедій. Що ж тут могло піти не так?
Сюжет. Сюжет завернув кудись не туди. Ніколь – юна героїня з невизначеною ідентичністю – є силою “Дочки торговця шовком“, але вона ж є слабкістю цього роману. Бо сюжет в цій книжці визначає розгублена вісімнадцятирічна з її жагою любові, ідейними, творчими, національними метаннями та задавленим бажанням помститися нечуйним близьким. У першу і головну чергу це роман виховання (так, в екстремальних обставинах, але все ж), що сильно тяжіє до любовної мелодрами. Не те, щоби я не любила, коли хтось симпатично пише про кохання, але… Але тут історія поневірянь центральної персонажки не просто визначає, що і як ми бачимо, а ще й заважає роздивитися загальну картину.
Було б несправедливо зводити основний сюжетний конфлікт “Дочки торговця шовком” до “Як красива дівчина обирає між загадковим ЦРУ-шником та запальним революціонером”, проте… А проте це дійсно головна сюжетна лінія. Вона щедро роздає свої бонуси: наприклад, дуже цікаво (особливо, тут у нас) читалися розділи про те, як Ніколь відкривала для себе практичне начиння гучних комуністичних ідей. Але вона ж неминуче приводить до філософськи-робочого настрою “Чума на ваші два роди!” – і в найцікавіший момент потенційний історичний роман остаточно перетворюється на індивідуальну драму.
I absolutely love Dinah Jefferies writing style. She transports you into another world and time. I’ve read other books about silk merchants and really loved them and this one was a great story. The surroundings are described so vividly that you immerse yourself in the colours and scenes around you and can just imagine yourself there. It’s set in Hanoi.It explores family dynamics and sisterly rivalry. Nicole is given a silk shop by her father whilst her sister takes control of the business and Nicole feels second best. It was utterly beautiful writing and I can’t wait to read her next book! With many thanks to the publisher and Net Galley for the chance to read this one.
The author is so good and making you understand how hard times were in the places she bases her books. It was an insight to Vietnam but I felt it was padded out a bit too much in places. I didn’t buy into the characters which is unusual with her books.
I was kind of disappointed in the first half of this book, for some reason I just didn't connect with the writing style. But I did enjoy the second half and I'm glad I stuck with it. I read it after another amazing historical and then a thriller, and I had high expectations.
