For centuries, the elite of the world have sought the Pimpernel everywhere. Some want to kill him, others want to hire him, but Jack Cavanaugh knows that the love/hate relationship comes with the job title.
At present, Jack is trying to dismantle an investment scheme centered in Las Vegas, but "trying" is the operative word. It's been a month since he put the face of the scheme behind bars, yet the scam is still going strong. As Jack tries to uncover who has stepped in as the new head, what miniscule evidence there is all seems to point him back to Claire Ramsey, an introverted PhD student studying at UNLV.
If ever there as an unlikely head of an investment scheme, Claire's it. She has a genius IQ, but from all Jack has seen, Claire’s intelligence is as much a blessing as a curse when paired up with her acute OCD. Claire can barely make conversation with the cute guy down the hall, which makes it hard to believe she could be the charismatic salesperson who is getting international businessmen to invest $5—50 million a pop.
So what is Jack missing? What is the real story behind Claire Ramsey? And once Jack learns it, will he be able to walk away?
I like to keep things light and fun, and believe that life is journey so if you're going to buy a book, your life should better for it. Whether a book I write is intended to help you escape for a few hours or designed to teach you a new skill, I hope you find it unforgettable...in a good way. ;)
Current/Upcoming Titles: - Pimpernel - Walk of Infamy - King of the Friend Zone - The Kiss that Launched 1,000 GIFs
About the Rhea Jensen series. I like to tongue-in-cheek tell people, WARNING: This Series Contains Mormons. This series is more mystery/adventure with a dab of romance. HOWEVER, the last book in the series, Walk of Infamy, will be a stand-alone novel and end to the Rhea Jensen series that Pimpernel fans will likely enjoy.
4.5 stars! I'm always a sucker for that Scarlet Pimpernel trope. Except here ... the blue pimpernel!
Pimpernel is sort of an updated version of The Scarlet Pimpernel, set in modern-day Las Vegas, mixed with a crime caper type of plot, and with a pretty good-sized serving of romance on the side. It totally sucked me in and made me smile.
The main character, Claire, is a brilliant woman in her mid-20's with a huge case of OCD and a near-photographic memory (at least when she's off her meds). Her favorite professor - who she's been crushing on for years - is arrested, and a shadowy crime figure threatens to have him killed if Claire doesn't use her talents in the fraud scheme he was involved in. But at the same time, a mysterious man named Jack and his team of experts are also gunning for Claire, with an unknown purpose in mind.
To say much more would be to spoil it, but I enjoyed it thoroughly and sucked it down in one evening's reading. The writing isn't perfect (I spotted a handful of spelling and grammar errors), and it's not very gritty for a crime novel; it's definitely a light, clean and quick read. The details about Claire's OCD and how it interacts with her memory were fascinating, although I wondered a little if they were realistic, until I decided that I was having so much fun reading it that in this case I didn't care. Some parts of the plot don't make complete sense logically, but Pimpernel has such a fast pace that the plot holes only really became apparent to me when I was thinking it over later. So just go along for the ride and enjoy it. :)
Overall impression: this was very fun, and an exciting way to while away a few hours, in a beach read kind of way. I probably read most of it twice within two days, just so I could pick up on what I missed the first time through, and enjoy some of my favorite scenes a second time.
There are currently two sequels (as well as an interconnected series about a young woman PI that I haven’t read). I haven’t read the third book yet, but the second one veers off in a way I COMPLETELY did not expect, amping the SF element (which is very mild here, if it exists at all, mostly showing up with some really cutting-edge technology) much higher and adding a large dose of fantasy. If that’s not your thing, this book works well as a stand-alone read.
This isn't a genre I read often, but when I saw the author was Sheralyn Pratt there was no question about it. And sure enough, I could not put it down! Pimpernel is full of distinctive characters that have depth and layers. Claire is a fascinating person with the way her OCD and intelligence interact. She is compassionate, vulnerable, and loyal. It seems that Jack can do the impossible with his team and resources, and the more we get to know him we see just how amazing his personal set of skills are as well. His small team of elite each have their own area of expertise, but the real fun is in their interpersonal relationships and banter. There is action, humor, suspense, and moments of toe-curling romance. As the plot unfolded there were several twists that took me by surprise, and some that I guessed only just before they were revealed. I don't want to give anything away because I think the book is most enjoyed without knowing too much of what's going to happen, just go along for the ride! There are several potential stories with the secondary characters, so I really hope we see more of the Pimpernel's team in the future. Highly recommend!
(I received a complimentary copy of the book; all opinions in this review are my own)
This has a bit of a slow start for me, but after awhile I get sucked in and really enjoy the ride. I liked Claire, she has severe OCD and it was interesting to see how the author worked the character's OCD into the story and gave it a unique take. I loved Jack and when we were in his POV. I also loved his team and how they were so loyal and worked so well together. I thought Jack and Claire had good chemistry and loved the scenes when they're together. #swoon
The story was a lot of fun and moved along at a nice pace. If you're fan of shows like Ocean's Eleven or Leverage, then you'll enjoy this book. Overall, a super fun read and one I'd easily recommend!
Walk of Infamy is a campion book to this series, a prequel to the events that happen in Pimpernel.
This was free when I picked it up - but it would be worth paying for!
Can't give higher praise than that.
There were a couple of lulls, but the last third of the book moved along at a really brisk pace and I enjoyed the twists and turns. The main twist really did surprise me!
I would query how badly
Claire is a very sweet character that I became very fond of and I would be happy to read more of her adventures. Light reading perfect for the summer
A very good example of a modern romantic suspense novel
Highly intelligent, highly OCD Claire Ramsay is a grad student working on her PhD at a university in Las Vegas Nevada, when she could have gone to a more prestigious school, but she was drawn there by her charismatic mentor . . . which leads directly to us watching her, on page one, scam a foreign investor out of millions of dollars.
She has to, in order to save her professor.
I was hooked from the first page. The writing is tight and deeply immersive, giving the reader a realistic look into what unmedicated OCD can be like. That was interesting in itself, but then we begin to meet an amazing group of people who are modern day versions of the Scarlet Pimpernel, only these ones aim at the %1 who are cheating the system to get even richer, including resorting to murder because they know they can get away with it.
Oh, to have a group like that in real life, especially today, eh?
But at least we can have romantic action filled wish fulfillment. I loved the banter, and the characters, and the fact that this was more romantic than blood-and-grue gritty, while keeping a very fast pace.
A few grammatical bobbles poked me out, but such was the strength of the story that I dove right back in.
This book makes me happy. Seriously loved it. Lots of fun. A fabulously fun clean romance filled with adventure and an unforgettable first kiss. Two thumbs up!!

Not a perfect read but easy, fun, creative escapism.
2020 Review Oh, yeah. Still love it. Feeling struck by all the ways this book could have gone from here. And where it actually went. Not sure I have the emotional wherewithal for the third one. But probably should read it eventually?
2019 Review I think this book is officially going to become one I re-read semi-frequently. It is fun and swoon worthy. And I was right in my original review. The real power of this book is that the author does not try to recreate the original Scarlet Pimpernel. She makes her own man out of the legend. A bit too on the nose at times with the Strong Female Character message but, hey! Sometimes, that is nice.
2018 Review
I obsessively love The Scarlet Pimpernel. You don't even know. It is a closet obsession now but in high school...well, let's just say I'm grateful for friends as weird as me.
And this movie? The best.
POINT BEING. I had very high expectations for this book. Scarlet Pimpernel spin-offs don't often live up to my expectations. Across a Star-Swept Sea is a very rare exception. That...and this book, actually. I think it lived up to my expectations, which kind of fascinates me, from an objective standpoint. Subjectively, I am FREAKING OUT RIGHT NOW.
MOREEEEEEEE.
Sheralyn Pratt takes the Scarlet Pimpernel we all know and love and turns him into a white-collar crime fighter. It works, partially because she does not try and recreate the Scarlet Pimpernel. Jack is very much his own man. He's....well, Pimpernel.
Claire was fantastic. She is an intelligent and likable character whose struggle with OCD felt realistic and integral to her character. I'm impressed with any author who can pull off mental illness like that. She conveyed raw, untapped potential mixed with a naivety that somehow made her believable instead of annoying.
The romance. Very swoon worthy. But clean!
The fast paced plot kept the story going and interesting. I was engaged from the start and am looking forward to the sequel. (Though I'm told it isn't as good :( )
IN CONCLUSION, a fun book that kept me hooked and made me swoon and offered the spirit of the Scarlet Pimpernel if not the substance.
Oh my. I am still thinking about this book days after reading. My head is having a hard time letting it go and I really want to be able to read the next book right now. Sheralyn Pratt says in the back of her book that if I want another book in this series, I should write a review. So, here is it. And now? I'm waiting.... (said in my best high pitched sing- songy voice)
I really did love this book. It took me a quick minute to adjust to Claire and her voice and settle in with the story but once I did? I just couldn't pull myself out. Claire is brilliant and like all of us, flawed. But it is her flaws that make her brilliant and so very human.
Claire would obviously need a brilliant sort of man to match her. Jack fits the bill for this perfectly. He has more tricks up his sleeve, quite literally, than anyone else. I loved Jack. He was the glue that held all the characters and the plot together.
This book is full on from beginning to end. There is danger and intrigue, secrets and surprises. It was so engaging and fun! I loved it. Oh, wait. I said that already. It will be a loooooong wait for the next book.
Absolutely fun: a bit of mystery, adventure and light romance rolled into an entertaining story. I was pleasantly surprised as this was offered as a kindle freebie and I did not expect too much. More detailed review to come.
I'm fairly stingy with my five star ratings, but this one deserved it. It was very different from anything I've read lately, and a lot of it took me by surprise. There were some laugh out loud moments, as well as some great romantic tension. All of the characters were distinct and I liked them all for different reasons. Now that I know how it ends, I'll be going back to read it again because I'm sure there are clues and nuances that I missed the first time around. Would absolutely recommend.
Content: clean (though there are references to infidelity).
I know I've read The Scarlet Pimpernel before, but this one had such a unique, modern twist to it--I really wasn't sure where it was going and what would happen. I love book surprised and was very happy with this one! I loved the adventure and suspense.
Claire is very smart and is being used as a pawn in an investment scheme...or is she? It's up to Jack and his team to figure out what's going on and to stop her and whoever she's working with before it's too late. I was amazed at the ingenuity involved in creating this scenario. Not only is Claire smart, but props to Sheralyn Pratt! Petite Claire has some obsessive compulsive tendencies that are pretty severe and it was fascinating to me to see things from her POV. Jack is quite an interesting character! He had me on edge, guessing at both his motives and his actions throughout the entire story. He's very intriguing and "magical"--I loved his character.
I love a story that captures my attention on so many different angles. Things started out a little slowly at first and I honestly wasn't sure where things were going to go. As the story progressed and more events unfolded, I found myself engrossed and didn't want to put it down! There are some fabulous romantic moments that are clean, yet sizzling. Not only is this story entertaining, but the characters are too--there are so many different facets to so many different (and great) people. I'm really hoping this is made into a series. Please?
Wow if I ignored things I had to do in my everyday life when I read Sheralyn Pratt’s The Kiss That Launched 1,000 Gifs, I was even more reluctant to take time away from Pimpernel. This wasn’t a romance driven novel like the prior mentioned title, though our Pimpernel hero does find love and ladies be prepared to swoon. This was a sexually clean and low violence action thriller focused on the Pimpernel and his operatives’ mission. The Pimpernel and his operatives throw the readers constant plot twists and illusion of what is happening without any contrived effort. I so enjoyed the fun unpredictable ride and being fooled over and over. The novel’s pace was constantly moving. Not a dull moment!
I loved the world building of Sherlyn Pratt’s century old legend of her created enigma the Pimpernel and his secret organization of gifted operatives around the world. Though not a retelling, you can tell that “Pimpernel” is also inspired by the “Scarlet Pimpernel” as there are many recognizable tributes to the action novel by Emma Orczy, from the pimpernel flower calling card to the large bounty on the Pimpernel’s head from his enemies (5 million for one of his operatives and 50 million for the actual confirmed Pimpernel). Though done very differently, this novel also had the elements of so many well written TV shows and movies like “Lie to Me”, “Criminal Minds”, “Catch Me If You Can”, “Now You See Me”, and “Mission Impossible”. This was a really intelligent novel that gave your brain a lot to process.
I really grew to love and care for Claire, Jack (the Pimpernel), Kali, Margot, and Ren because of the great character development. Due to the prejudice of my mental health professional background I have to say my favorites were Claire and Kali. With Claire, she has obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) which was debilitating to her in many ways, but that she was able to instead turn her perceived weakness into a super power gift which could help people. I always love when people turn weaknesses into strengths. I would love to see her gift used in the operative world of the Pimpernel. With Kali, I loved how she could accurately psychologically profile some person one day and the next day help take down a baker’s dozen of armed men while never using a gun.
This would be a great book to movie, but for now Sheralyn Pratt please turn this into a series!!!
Sensuality content: Clean. A few kisses.
Source: An unedited advance reviewers copy (ARC) in exchange for my 100% honest opinion.
This one was just a little too slow for me and what started out as a promising suspenseful book with a lot of action quickly went into the category of boring. I started to lose interest and then became lost a bit when the story wasn't keeping my focus. It also didn't read too much like a standalone or first book in a series when other characters were mentioned and made it seem like I should already know them and their story when I don't.
This is a classic case of "it's not you, it's me." Generally retellings are hit or miss for me, but that's not the case here since I haven't read the Scarlet Pimpernel yet. I didn't enjoy this due to this book's own problems, not because of it failed to compare with the original.
Stories based on lies or deceit are hard for me to read. It takes some special book chemistry for me to empathize with the characters instead of just being super frustrated with the duplicity of it all. Without honesty and trust, how can anyone really invest in a story? Anything and everything out of a liar's mouth could be false, so why care? And that was one of my problems with this story. Add to that the fact that the h just couldn't help trusting the H again, after finding out that he'd been lying to her for a while, and I was done. I don't care how trustworthy his hazel eyes were, the girl needed to be smart and resist.
Then there was the disparity in experience between the MCs. Although this was a clean read (something I'm grateful for), the author alludes to what the H did during the regular course of his job. On the other hand, the h was, you guessed it, a virgin. And not only that, she'd never even kissed anyone before and the H was her first kiss. She started developing feelings for him, a day or two after finding out that the H wasn't who he said he was. Days. I'm sorry. Was I supposed to respect this h? Sigh. I won't even bother getting into why that bugged me. After the H left, I was glad that the h conducted her kissing/chemistry experiments. She didn't do them out of spite but instead out of curiosity. And things never went further than that. But you had no idea what the H had been up to the whole time they were apart. Then the h took him back literally minutes after he showed up again, deciding to grace her with his presence.
Finally, the world of the Pimpernel was too loosely developed. The beginning of this story was very slow so I was excited when the character of the Pimpernel was introduced. Aha! I thought. This is when it gets interesting! But I was wrong. There was a slight spike in the fun factor, but then it became boring again. This was due in part to the fact that we never get a complete picture of what the Pimpernel's job is like. It was always "he'd have to tell me how he did that sometime," or "how he did it, I'll never know" and the vagueness made the H too mysterious. And while that may have been the intention of the author, it just made me not care. There is such a thing as too much mystery after all.
So I'm sorry, but I didn't like this one much. It was clean and the twist was surprising, but there were just too many things that bothered me to enjoy this book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I feel like I need hours and hours to pour out all my thoughts for this book. Unfortunately, I only have a couple minutes so this will be short and sweet. Unlike my normal rambling reviews. ;-)
I had so much going on this last week that this book felt like it was dragging me slowly along when all I wanted was to curl up with it and devour it right away. But, it did allow me to savor and think about parts of it, so I guess it was an ok thing to have it take me longer to read. I would try to sit and read a couple pages at the end of the day, but after running nonstop and late nights and long days, I'd reread the same sentence and be fast asleep. Talk about depressing when all you want to do is read a page. LOL! But I persisted and finally was able to read all the reveals and discover all the secrets.
Let me tell you, this book! Wow! It's not at all what I was expecting, and yet it was. But I didn't see it coming. Sheralyn Pratt did a fantabulous job throwing the scent off the trail, so to speak, and casting doubt all over the place. Phew! I'm ready to re-read it and dive into the next book too! I feel pretty lucky that I don't have to wait for the book to be released to enjoy it. Now I just need life to comply too! There are two books that can go along with this. Royal Ball and Walk of Infamy. I haven't read either but from friends who have they highly recommend them.
So very glad that there were enough reviews out there telling the author they loved this book and they wanted more. At the end of the book Sheralyn Pratt tells the reader that she could write more with these characters or leave it where it ended. But she needed reviews letting her know that we loved it. I'm a little late to that bandwagon but apparently it happened because the second book, Royal Ball, was just released a week or so ago. Woohooo!
If you like suspense, action, mind games, thought provoking stories and characters, disguises, computers, geniuses, OCD characters, sweet love stories and all around good fun, this is one I would highly recommend picking up.
Content: Clean. Some moments of peril, kissing but nothing further, lies and deceit and plenty of action.
I snagged a free copy from Amazon a couple weeks ago.
I loved, loved, loved this book! It drew me in from the beginning and got even better as I kept reading! It's full of great characters. Claire Ramsey, the genius, raised in high society but never fit in there. Jack Cavanaugh who works to keep the elite from misbehaving. Jack's team, Kali, Margot and Ren, who are each scary in their own way and a team you definitely want on your side. I loved the way they worked together and showed their faith in each other, even if they had personal issues between them. Then there are the bad guys, who played their parts well.
It's also full of secrets, action, suspense, humor, and romance. There are plenty of twists and turns along to the way to an amazing ending! The bottom line on this book is: It's awesome, get your hands on it asap, read it, write a review and share it with others so the author will write more!
I received a copy from I Am a Reader for an honest review. My opinion is 100% my own.
GAHHH! I loved this book and I predict there will be a movie of this one day. The story was awesome and really drew me in at about chapter 15. The beginning was a little slow, but the build up is oh so worth it! The characters are so great! I would not have read this book based on the back description, but I loved that it gave so little away and I was totally surprised and loved all the turns this book takes. Trusted friends told me to read this and I am so glad I did. This is hopefully the start of a series, but I will be watching for more from this author. Very well done! This is a clean, mystery, romance ( oh what a romance). I wanted to reread this book so I could go on to the next in the series but I'm just not feeling the pull to read more. I loved Jack and Clair and loved this story. It was like all the best Heist movies, Ocean's, Italian Job, 4 Horsemen but they are the good guys instead of the thieves. 6-2021
So much intrigue, and a touch of romance. This book read like a movie to me. A touch of Ocean's Eleven, Mission Impossible, and the misdirection of Now You See Me. I loved the fast pace, the technology, and the disguises. It really would come to life on the screen. The characters were well developed, especially Claire. I really felt like I understood her, and the way she saw the world. The Pimpernel does stand alone, but I would love it if this became the start of this series. There is so much more potential for intrigue.
Content: clean (no language, some kissing, mention of infidelity-not the hero or heroine)
For the majority of Claire's life, she has never been close to her family. In fact, she has never really been close to anyone. With her OCD tendencies, it makes it hard for her to put herself out there. She feels in control of her life about 1% of the time. She feels alone and wishes for things to be different. When she finds someone who believes in her and doesn't give much thought to her idiosyncrasies, she will do anything she can to keep them close to her.
Jack has been commissioned to dismantle an investment scheme. He thought he had the head of the investment scheme behind bars but there is still someone out there pulling all the right strings. All leads are pointing to Claire but he just can't see it being her. There is something bigger at play and he must figure it out before it's too late.
I can't really go into too much detail in fear of giving things away. But just know that this book is full of twists and turns that you won't see coming. Just when I thought I had something figured out... BAM! Plot twist! Lol. Pimpernel kept my on my toes and awake way past my bedtime. I just HAD to see how it ended! I would love to see this made into a series!
If I can have one little quibble it would be the ending! Ugh! Why?! Why would you do that to me?! That's supposed to be somewhere in the middle of the book... not the end! I would've loved to see that put into the mix of things. If you've read the book then you know what I'm talking about! ;) Haha.
All my bookworm friends have been raving about Sheralyn Pratt's books so I thought it was about time I checked them out. This is my first book of hers and I was not disappointed. I will definitely be checking more out by her! :)
As for my casting... not going to lie... this one was tough! But I think these two fit the best for me... ;) Hehe.
4.5 stars I'll be honest, I started out not loving this book...shoot I wasn't even liking it...but then something happened....magic. :) Pimpernel ended up being completely addicting, intriguing, and FULL of twists and turns. I ended up LOVING IT. It would make such a fun movie! I can't wait to read more by this author. I'm SO glad I kept reading!
Okay, I jumped into Pimpernel because it worked for a certain challenge. I didn't realize that it was going to be a clean romance until it was too late. Like towards the end of the book. Which, okay, is completely my fault but I don't necessarily hate clean romances. I do tend to be in the mood for them. It just wasn't my cup of tea today.
In this, you will meet Jack and Claire. They don't really know one another but he's on a secret mission and she's a potential target. While being undercover, he's acting like her roommate who just happens to be gay. Long story short, Jack is not into men and into Claire. Once Claire knows his true identity, and is thrown into his mission, she starts to develop feelings for him. Well, sort of.
Seriously, I didn't even think they liked one another that way until they kissed. Even then it was slightly awkward because we get a total of three kisses between them. Maybe some more towards the end but I don't really count those.
In the end, secrets come out to play and the bad guys are put away. It was a long book for little to no romance, but I guess I'm happy that I dove into this.
This book is a high energy, nail-biting high-stakes romance that will keep you glued to the pages. It did take me a little while to get into it and the opening chapters are a bit confusing with the overload of information, but once you get past that, the roller coaster ride begins. Who can you trust? Who is real and who isn't? There are so many sides to the Pimpernel.
Claire Ramsey is a genius who is currently trapped in her OCD tendencies so she can commit fraud on her beloved professor's behalf and keep him from being killed. Unbeknownst to her, however, the Pimpernel is watching her and wants to help---if she'll return all the money she's taken from investors in a phony scam. Of course he promises her his full protection if she'll do it. But can she pull it off? Or is she already in too deep? Claire is caught up in the intrigue and the danger, but the closer she gets to the Pimpernel, the more she realizes that she's also in danger of losing her heart.
I loved Claire and how she kept getting up after life deals her some pretty harsh blows. Her OCD tendencies were realistic and made the reader feel a lot of sympathy for the predicament she was in. And when all is finally revealed, you just want Claire to have her happy ending. Jack is a sigh-worthy hero who isn't a cliche. He's not much to look at, but he can still make your knees weak. I love how he was able to peel his own layers away just as he was in the process of trying to peel away Claire's. It was a romance that was sweet and fun to read. I wish we would have had a bit more backstory into who and what happened to the supporting team members, but we got a good enough foundation to make them solid additions to the cast of characters. I hope we get more books about them!
This is definitely a book you'll want at the top of your to-read pile, but make sure nothing else is on your agenda for the day because you won't want to put it down!
I was told to stop what I was doing and read this book. When a friend tells you that, you can do nothing else but ignore your chores and to-do list and settle in for a great read. I was not disappointed.
The first 30% of this book was hard for me to get into. Not sure why. All of a sudden the story gets put into over-drive and I was sucked in. I painfully had to stop reading to take care of my amazing family, but after that and exercising was done for the night I was back into my book. I stayed up way too late to finish it too.
I loved Jack!! I just want to read a whole series about the adventures of Jack. He was awesome! I liked Claire, however as I was reading about all of her OCD tendency's I think I was becoming OCD myself. I was grateful when we as the reader stopped getting so much of that. I also loved Ren and Margot and I am voting right here and now that they need their own book! As well as Kali's story...
**Dear Author,
Please write this as a series and let us see where Jack and Claire's story finishes as well as Ren and Margot and Kali. I would be ever so grateful. Their characters are clearly in need of their own books.
Sincerely, Deb**
Sorry for the interruption. Over-all I really enjoyed this book and thought it was creative and fun. Glad I stopped my life and decided to read it.
Blurb: For centuries, the elite of the world have sought the Pimpernel everywhere.
I loved this book! Once I got about 1/3 of the way through it, I couldn't put it down! I don't remember much about The Scarlet Pimpernel, but after reading this book I want to go back and watch the movie that I haven't seen in over 20 years!
Claire Ramsey has an IQ of 176, but she's socially awkward. She has OCD and the only time she feels she is in control is when she's reading body language and micro-expressions. She was lured to UNLV by a handsome professor named Ryan Eastman, and now he's been arrested and she is brilliantly masterminding an illegal operation to rescue him.
Jack Cavanaugh and his team are trying to get to the bottom of the illegal investment scheme. I loved Jack and his entire team - Ren and Margot and Kali. They were all such interesting characters and it was fun to read how they all worked together and interacted with each other.
I hope there are more books in this series because I wasn't ready to say good-bye to Jack, Claire, Ren, Margot and Kali at the end of the book (and I felt like I didn't get enough of some of the characters)!!!
Content: Clean Source: ARC Copy that has since been edited (opinion is 100% my own)
I almost DNFed this one, because the beginning didn't grab me at all. But it had a lot of good reviews, so I kept reading and soon found myself interested in the story. It was a little annoying that . Other than that, this was a cute story with likable characters.
I received a copy in exchange for an honest review. Mystery, light romance, clean. I was debating the number of stars to give this novel. I can firmly give it a 4.5, and will round it up, because it is really swirling in my head right now, and making me want to re-read it again. While I see reasons that other people rated the book, I also can see this as a movie too. It would make a great screenplay with the mystery of Claire's life unfolding, until the final scenes. I loved that it was told from both perspectives. Seeing the action gradually pick up, and the intricacy of the intense, unfolding events coming to a magically crafted precision ending for the 'bad guys' was a fantastic read for me. It was interesting to see Jack's character unfold gradually during the course of the novel. The secondary characters were interesting in and of themselves, and the author hints at a series of books. I am intrigued to see their skills and personalities develop in any forthcoming books. Claire's disability, and skills to read people made for an interesting portrayal in the novel. Her weakness and her strength, that leads to her coming into 'real' contact with Jack/Daniel. I loved that Jack gave her choices where it mattered as he could, as the carefully mapped out scenario unfolded. The family element with his brother, and his team as they went after bad guys was a fast-paced and intricate ride. Jack's magic/slight of hand skills were fun to see. The cleverness of his myriad plans and the team effort to pull of the bait and switches were a fantastic ride at the end (was it a read?? I was moving to quickly to find out the conclusion, definitely a ride!). The sweet relationship that develops between Claire and Jack as they both figure out their growing attraction, even while permutating the ways where it shouldn't happen, made for a sweet addition to the action and intrigue. I loved that Claire's innocence, but combined with her OCD people reading skills, helped her to 'read' Jack correctly in the most meaningful way. Can't wait to hopefully get another glimpse into their journey in another novel!
This was a pretty cute book. I'm guessing it's not really meant to be seen as cute, but that's how I viewed it (keep in mind I'm pretty weird when it comes to my ratings). I really liked the main protagonist and I enjoyed how although she was pretty different (with her being OCD). However, I also really liked Jack. Especially near the end when the story took on a more spy/james bond vibe. That ending was amazing. Totally kick butt. And great side characters (you'll see if you read it). Not really much to say other than that. Cute with a kick butt ending and cool side characters.
