The Warsworn Trilogy #3

The Heart of War

Rate this book
King Tryton has rebuilt a nation, forged peace from war, and returned his people to the honor they had lost. Now guarding mages, guildmasters, and kings, the rock trolls inspire respect rather than fear. In spite of his feats it is his family that brings him pride. He has trained his children in every facet of combat, preparing them for a world of conflict.

It will not be enough.

In the distant past another rock troll reigned supreme—until he disappeared. His will was bound to another, his flesh empowered with forgotten magic, and his body covered with impenetrable armor. Now he leads an army from another realm and serves the Lord of Chaos himself. Bound for eons, his rage has only grown in exile. When he gains his freedom the invasion begins.

And the world ends.

This brings us the conclusion of the trilogy Chronicles of Lumineia, and it was bitter sweet in ending.
We have seen Tryton's vision for his people fulfilled, him raise and train his family, teaching them that defending friends and family is worth fighting for. He has faced many trials in his life but now he and all the races face their greatest peril, the question is will they survive it.

This is the final book of the Warsworn Trilogy chronicling the rise to power of Tryton, the king of the Rock Trolls during the Chronicles of Lumineia trilogy and a prominent figure in the second War of Draeken. Tryton was great in his brief appearance in the Chronicles and I'm grateful that Hale went back and expanded his story.

In this book, we are finally contemporary to the events of the Chronicles. It was interesting as it provided further backstory to some of the storylines of the Chronicles as well as well as gave a lot more information on the buildup and preparation of Draeken's generals for the war. Having read the Chronicles, I knew generally what Tryton's activities were, but they were greatly expanded upon, along with his family.

I love reading about the rock trolls, even in the previous books. I view them as a sort of idealistic view of samurai; the ultimate warriors who can turn the tide of any battle even with limited numbers. I enjoyed the White Mage saga, but I am very happy Hale returned to this era of his world and I'm hoping that this continues for a while more.

The end was a little disappointing, until I realized the overall plan Hale has for his story of Luminea. I love how all of these side stories intertwine with the original tale of mages, humans, dwarfs, elfs, trolls, and all the races trying to survive. Each character's story gives a new perspective and adds depth to the tale. Can't wait to see which main character gets their own series next!

One of the best series I have ever read. So absolutely enjoyable, with everything I love in a book/series.

There is so much our world today could learn from this intelligent and brave hero. Such chivalry, loyalty and just downright goodness.

Don't let that statement keep you from the action packed book. I don't think I have ever come across an author who manages to write over half a book of near full action.

I was so sad to be finished. I just want MORE and MORE from this world, these characters and this Author.

My new favorite. Excellent story telling.

I can't get enough of Ben Hale's writing. This trilogy was supremely enjoyable and I am so pleased with how rapidly they become available so I can get my fix. When can we expect the next series, Ben?!
