This is book 2 in the Lin Coffin Mystery series. The main mystery is solved in each book but you will enjoy the stories more if they are read in order. Lin Coffin is enjoying her new life on the island of Nantucket, Massachusetts. One night while helping her cousin and her cousin’s band members load instruments and equipment into a van, she meets a friendly young couple who help her after she falls on the sidewalk. The next day while working in the garden of a new client, Lin sees the girl again but there is something very wrong. Lin and her cousin, Viv, with the help of several others, work to solve the mystery of the girl’s disappearance. This story has ghosts and some mild paranormal elements. About 200 pages in length in paperback format.

It’s a good clean cozy paranormal mystery. I guessed the identity of the killer about 2/3 of the way in, the reveal was pretty anticlimactic- oh here’s my semi big confession in two sentences - bam - police dragging killer away and it’s like driving through a town with one stoplight and realizing - wait did I miss the light??
But for a nice, clean, end of day to de stress read, this was not bad. Oh, and no love triangle troupe, so 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 for that.
A Haunted Disappearance: A Lin Coffin Mystery 2 Chronological order recommended.
In A Nutshell: The ghosts of two young ladies appear to Lin, the ghost whisperer. It is a sign their deaths are connected, the question for Lin is how. A cosy paranormal mystery that is pedestrian at times but overall a pleasant read.
The Plot: 24 hours after the help of a young woman, Lin sees the young lady's corporeal form, and that spells trouble.
The Protagonists:Lin sees ghosts and has since childhood. But childhood bullying made her suppress her gift, until now. On the island of Nantucket, she finds acceptance. Lin is the salt of the earth and happens to be a gardener.
It is an interesting mystery that will keep you absorbed because you will want to know what the connection is between the deaths. And who brought badness into the idyllic world of Nantucket - a place filled with friendly people.
I like the relationship between Lin, and her cousin Vivian. The focus on their family bond is heartwarming. And the romantic aspect of their lives is not overbearing. Another thing that sets this book apart is that lack of romance between the protagonist and a police officer. The characters also develop in this series, for instance, you will see another side of Leonard from book one. I also love the island of Nantucket and the easy-going if elderly residents. It all adds up to a cosy feel.
The paranormal aspect of the book is what attracts me most, but the ghosts are not particularly appealing. They say little, well nothing in fact, and their actions are far from clear. The old ghosts do dress in an 'olde worlde fashion' so I guess there is some charm. It's a lighthearted presentation of a paranormal mystery that is light on the humour, but without the nightmares.
It took me some days to finish the book, so it is not a page-turner, but it's pleasant enough.

My rating system (* = star) 0* Could not finish this book (waste of time) 1*Finished the book but didn't like it not fulfilled 2* Finished the book it was okay. 3* A good read worth your time. 4* An excellent read often with a novel concept or unusual plot. 5* A magnificent read. A prominent example of the genre.
The end is what pumped up one more star rating. I like Whiting’s style of writing. She always has hero animals, a family feeling amongst friends, and the wrap up always comes quick. I am the type who cannot stand too much suspense because it makes me so nervous that I can’t enjoy the story itself. Sometimes with books I search for the killer in the end and then go back to my place in the book that’s usually in the middle. I guess you can say Spoilers don’t ruin it for me. Anxiety is real, people! Lol. So, ya, Whiting’s books always bring the perpetrator to justice within a couple of pages. This story was no different. The main character, Lin was face to face with the killer for only a short time and there wasn’t really any fighting thankfully. There must be other people like me who stress too much wondering what is going to happen and who will get hurt!
I wish the ghosts would talk, but I guess they speak through gestures and their presence. When Lin was little the ghosts telepathically spoke to her, but since she’s been an adult there have been no words. Now that Lillian is gone, Lin was told she takes her place as sort of the Ghost Communicator. It was sweet at the end when all bright light friends walked together into a beautiful and happy place.
Next book is the 3rd of a 15 book series and it is called The Haunted Bones. My questions that I hope to find the answers to soon are, “What’s up with Leonard? What’s his story and how did Lillian help him? Can he also see and or else ghosts?”
The second book in the Lin Coffin series ambles along at a slow and steady pace. It's a fast and fairly pleasant read which is slightly marred by the author pointblank refusing to up the emotions at even the most exciting times. As in the first book the solution to the mystery - the deaths of two young women 25 years apart -more or less just happens. And, while Lin sees ghosts they are mostly just there, not particularly helpful in any way. Leonard's character is expanded slightly and there are a couple of other developments which may point towards future books. I've been enjoying the series, mostly because it gave me a break from some gruesome novels, so I reckon I'll read at least one more before making a decision on whether to proceed onwards in the eleven-book series. P.S. I can't make up my mind whether I like the covers of the first three books, each is a very slight re-working of the previous one.
The girl's ghost wants her murderer brought to justice.
Better than the first book. A night helping her cousin leads her to meeting a young couple. When the ghost of the young girl turns up, it seems that she is the only one to be looking into the girl's disappearance. Lies and death follow as she does. Could all this be linked to an old murder? The characters have gotten stranger and the interaction between them is better. The plot unravels to display many threads that all join at the end with a dramatic ending. Plus the romantic angle is a nice little side view of her life. A great series getting underway.
This is the second book in the Lin Coffin series. It picks up from the first book with another murder mystery with plenty of ghosts. J.A. Whiting's books are a fun read and they take place in Massachusetts which is where I live so it's fun to read and learn a little about where the stories take place.
Another fun mystery novel, this one set on Nantucket and involving a sleuth who can also see ghosts. It makes for an interesting story, along with her cousin Viv and her incredibly talented rescue dog Nicky she help her along the way.
In this one, Lin find out that a woman she just met has gone missing, and then she finds links to a 25 year old mystery of another young woman who went missing.
I found and read the last book first in this series. Enjoyed it so much that I went back to the beginning and read book 1. Now 2. A lot of fun to read. I love mysteries but am surprised I like the ghost part of this series. I even feel the cold. Breeze when these spirits show up. Looking forward to reading book 3. I plan to read them all.

I really enjoy Heather Graham's books, and I think J A Whiting is on their way to being in that league. Engaging read that keeps you guessing who done it. :) I enjoy Lin Coffin and look forward to learning more about her and her gifts.
I enjoyed this cozy mystery, an interesting storyline, and cast of characters alive and ghost. This book is recommended for those who like cozy mysteries with a hint of paranormal.
Interesting setting, pleasant characters, light murder if there can be such a thing—reminds me of Nancy Drew mysteries. I’m doing jury duty now, pretty intense, so this series is perfect summer reading. Enjoy!
A nice quick read. Pleasant characters. Keeps you guessing until the end. First impressions are not always right. Only thing I am finding a little hard to believe is the lack of police investigation into any of these deaths. Otherwise I enjoy the story line.
This has become a great series with just 2 books so far.. I enjoy the story and the characters are strong and well written. The easiness of reading the story, makes for a great experience. Great Reading Everyone!
The perfect blend of mystery along with a continuing light paranormal storyline, with likable characters and pets. Book two in the series. Another enjoyable read by the author of the Sweet Cove series.
Well written and delightful characters, I enjoy the plots and the stories. This one was really good but I wish the ghosts she sees would talk to her...
