She Wouldn't...
The institution of marriage held no attraction for Grace Ackerly. The world, she had noticed, expected nothing more from women than that they be submissive, demure brood mares, allowed absolutely no rights or even opinions of their own. And yet, at twenty, an age at which most of Society considered her well past her prime, she need only wait a little longer to be safe. No—she was fairly comfortable declaring—she would never marry, no matter the temptation set before her.

He Would...
With a flashing green gaze potently combining warmth, humor and seductive promise, Trevor Christian Caldwell was resisted by few women. When one factored in the earldom of Huntwick and his legendary charm, his conquests became all the more indubitable. But never had there been a woman he truly respected. Not until now. Here, in Pelthamshire, a spirited redhead forced a decision he had never before considered: He would marry Grace Ackerly, no matter what protestations, no matter what travails.

It was yet to be seen who would prevail. And how.

DENEANE ELISE CLARK lives in South Carolina, just across the border from Charlotte, North Carolina, with her teenage daughter and son, and a cat clinging in ignorant bliss to her three remaining lives. The eldest of three girls, she grew up just outside of New Orleans, Louisiana, wandering through her childhood with her nose buried in a book when she should have been cleaning her room.

Currently, she spends her days working full time, her nights writing, and the in-between times sitting on bleachers and selling concessions for the high school booster club. To relax, she likes to go to a local restaurant on a nearby lake and sit on the deck enjoying laughter and drinks with an amazing group of friends.

"Trevor Christian Caldwell had a flashing dark green gaze that held a subtle hint of seductive promise, a great deal of smoldering warmth, and more than a trace of rich humor. When the earl looked upon a young lady, she always had the flattering impression that the entire world had fallen away, and that, for a moment, nobody else mattered to him."

Oh, but Trevor hasn't met Grace Ackerly, who is determined at all costs to remain an old maid (why?). Trevor sees Grace's portrait and is in immediate lust love with Grace, and even more so when he meets the real deal. Thinking to escape Trevor's advances, she flees life in the country with her large passel of sisters and joins her aunt in London for "the season". I know Grace's reasoning makes no sense, but this is what she does.

No surprise, but Trevor soon shows up anywhere Grace is - he claims a waltz or two from our unmarried miss (!!!), takes her on a carriage ride alone without a chaperone (!!!) and there's even a dumber-than-a-bucket-of-rocks scheme to sneak her out in the middle of the night, dress her up as a man and join a card game with his friends.

No, I am not kidding.

To be honest, I am not fond of regencies and they all seem to be made of the same cloth - womanizing rake finally meets the much-too-independent woman of his dreams, falls head over heels in love and is ready to marry and have a passel of kiddos just like that. That said, I think even die-hard Regency fans would have issues with this one, as it is merely a wall paper romance with overblown descriptions of pretty dresses, heaving bosoms and rigid evidences of Trevor's arousal ;)

The big misunderstanding is stupid and forced and Trevor turns into the biggest jerk that ever walked the face of the earth. Grace is much too modern and better suited for a contemporary romance than a regency (although I still think I'd dislike her). There's a bit of a twist with a bad guy with evil designs stalking Grace, . I could say more, but I have better things to do today so I'll just leave you with a few quotes so you can decide for yourself.

"A blue satin sash wrapped around the high waistline and tied in an enormous bow that peeked jauntily out from behind her back and exactly matched the wide ribbon running through her short auburn curls. The perky ribbon looked entirely out of place tied in a fat bow above the gamine face dominated by those huge pansy-blue eyes."

"With a strength he did not know he possessed, he dragged his mouth from hers, flinching at her unintentional soft whimper of denial, and stared, sightless, over the top of her head, his mind fighting to command his thundering need."

"Her nipples rose proudly, blushing pink on small breasts shaped to perfectly fit his cupped hand, begging without shame for his kiss."

"The ripe, enticing mound was suddenly exposed to his hungry gaze, her small, rosy nipple jutting proudly up into the midmorning air. Reverently he cupped her soft fullness in his hand, and then bent his head to suckle the offered tidbit."

Thank goodness it was free. Mr. Kindle may never recover though.

Trevor, the Earl of Huntwick falls immediately for Grace Ackerly, after one of her sisters is in an accident. Determined not to marry, Grace does all she can to put him off, but Trevor is determined to marry her.

Characterizations were weak. Grace's behavior is spoiled and selfish. It's also never explained what she expects to do with her life if she never marries, which girls certainly were raised to do in early 19th century England. Her family doesn't appear to be overly wealthy, so how would she live? Her "plan" is to wait until she's firmly an old maid so she won't have to worry about marrying, but then what? The lack of explanation made her even more immature. She's cruel to Trevor and her behavior doesn't make sense, given the setting and time.

Independence is a great thing, but characters need to show the ambition and intelligence to have a plan or dreams at least for what they want to do. There was none of that here.

Trevor's character is either far too weak in his repeated attempts to win Grace over. Why would a man bother? Most worth their salt wouldn't in the face of her treatment, unless they like women to treat them badly. Then, he turns abruptly cruel towards her at the very end after putting up with her behavior for so long.

When she does finally ask him to stay, he's cruel to her again, cutting her off and leaving. It made no sense.

The antagonist, Harry who had been her childhood friend, was predictable, uninteresting and easily taken care of at the end - so much so that I wondered why the author had bothered including him.

None of the characters showed much depth nor dimension.

The plot was also weak, given that the conflict seemed to amount to no more than Grace's wim of not marrying. Harry's efforts weren't woven into the story, other than he stalks them for a while. But he's so easily defeated at the end, and doesn't really appear in the story until so late that he's not really good conflict. The story also dragged often.

I had the pleasure of meeting Deneane in person and she kindly let me read some of her personal works on her phone. Upon seeing her style of writing I went home and immediately put this on my kindle. I read A LOT. Like, a lot. For very many hours. Oftentimes my mind will wander as I read a book as it can not hold my attention. I could not put this book down. I read it until I passed out, picked it back up the next morning, and finished it within an hour.

I am not too familiar with the historical romance genre but I must say, if they are all as well written as this I am swayed. I love that there isn’t any graphic sex as there is with most books I read. That makes me uncomfortable and I often just skip those pages. No, these touches were tender and pure and my heart longed to be loved like that.

The other thing I found impressive was how Deneane could have the character dialogue flow. Usually a chapter is devoted to each persons thoughts but in this book you even know what the maid is thinking because of the seamless transition from character to character. I HIGHLY recommend this book and just told my whole book club to read it. Grace is a strong character and while there was a moment where I wanted to scream at Trevor I found their connection was deep and unbreakable. I can not wait to finish this series. Kudos to you Deneane!

DNF just before the mid-way point.

Grace was 1 of 6 daughters who lived w/ her scholar
father. Trevor, an earl, & his friend rescued Grace's
sis Mercy after a mishap with a horse. Trevor became
enchanted w/ Grace's portait before he met her, soon
after at an assembly. Grace, 2 sibs & Dad (@assembly)
learned of Mercy's injury via Trevor.

I disliked the personalities of the leads. Grace played too
many games w/ Trev. She seemed incapable of an honest,
adult convo w/ him. Grace displayed independence, bord-
ering on obnoxiousness. Trevor came on too strongly.
Their 1st kiss was a handsy kiss, which felt disrespectful
on Trevor's part. I generally prefer a couple to slowly
get to know ea. other before they kiss or go beyond kisses.
(exception being erotic romance). This couple felt lustful,
not loving.

Good

A nice Recency romance. The characters are engaging and the plot is interesting. Not the involved character study that characterises Georgette Heyer, but good none the less.

This book was yet another free download that I got on my Nook somewhere along the way.

I really just couldn’t get into this story. It started out pretty promising, but devolved into being silly and inconsistent very quickly. One of the things that really bothered me was Grace herself. She so stubbornly set on spending her entire life as a spinster that she spends her time acting like a complete ass and pushing away a man that she admits she has feelings for. We are never told why she has her heart set on spinsterhood. Does she want to spend her life taking care of her widower father? Does she have some sort of objection to what is said in the marriage vows? Has she been exposed to a loveless marriage while she was growing up? (Actually, on this last point, it seems that her father and mother were devoted to each other before her death, so Grace grew up with a very good example of marriage).

And not only is she a complete brat, she readily acknowledges that her actions could rain society’s disapproval down on her entire family, destroying all of their lives. And yet she continues with her behavior. So we can add “selfishness” to Grace’s ever growing list of admirable traits.

Trevor spends most of his time following along with Grace’s childish attempts to avoid his affections, but the one time she finally has a very valid excuse to avoid him, which he sees for himself, he decides he’s tired of her games and tries to cut her out of his life…only to go back to loving her when she resumes her disrespectful and foolish ways.

Thepart about hide and seek at the end was pretty dumb. That’s the only word I can think of to describe it. Dumb.

Unlike many other reviewers, I didn’t mind the bit about the stalker. Although I do agree with others who have said that the stalker brings up many questions:

And what was the deal with Sebastian? At the beginning of the book, when he runs over the little girl, we see into his head and he’s thinking nice thoughts; he seems like a pretty good guy. He reappears halfway through the book, we see into his thoughts again, and all of a sudden he’s thinking really nasty thoughts. It’s one thing to have a character ACT like a good guy, only to find out later that he or she is evil, but we’re seeing inside this guy’s head. Private thoughts are where the true personality lives, and his makes a complete 180.

I enjoyed reading about Grace Ackerley, one of six sisters. These girls have a wonderful spirit about them and I look forward to reading Mercy's story.

I unabashedly LOVE this book. Yes, it's all been done before. And yes, there were times I was frustrated with projecting 21st century sensibilities onto 19th century characters, but in all, it was absolutely perfect fluff. I was in love with Trevor, I could see why he enjoyed Grace's company, they weren't TOO pigheaded... yes, there was the time (as in every romance novel I freaking read) where I said "Just TALK TO EACH OTHER" but it wasn't too distracting. I was VERY impressed by a subtle misdirection by the author though! She introduced a stalker, which I thought was weird, but only went back to him a few times. Then, as everything gets resolved and Grace and Trevor start planning their wedding, I got so wrapped up in the romance that I completely forgot about the stalker! I was so surprised when he showed up again to kidnap Grace. Very rarely does something like that slip by me, so that might have something to do with why I loved this book so much! It was perfect for me- a bit of fluff set in the late Georgian/ early Victorian era with likable and smart characters. Perfect.

I was surprised on how much I enjoyed this story. You can't help but fall for the strong-willed Akerley sisters. The story mentions 6 sisters in all and we briefly were introduced to the twins Amity and Charity in their country home when the youngest Mercy got herself into a little trouble. This is how Grace was introduced and her story developed and her sister Faith, which is the next book I will purchase. Charity also has her story but I know little at this time about her with the brief minor role in Garce's story but enough to know she can be just like Grace, should be another fun read.
I even like Trevor Caldwell, the Earl of Huntwick and the instant attraction he felt towards Grace.
As much as I liked Grace Akerley, I believe that Mercy even though only a minor character will be a force when she get her own story and even though she is only 13 in Grace's story will she get her Duke when it is time for her story to be published?

This was a Free Friday Download for my Nook at Barnes & Noble. This was the first download I've done and I'm glad I did. I enjoyed reading this book more than most of the books I've read in the past six months.

I love the time period: Early 1800s in England and the characters that the author developed. Who wouldn't want to get to know these sisters and the leading men in this story.

I truly enjoyed the author's writing style and found her dialogue to be very witty. I think that along with strong characters and a good story are what drew me in. I couldn't put this book down at times...which led to later nights than I should have ;)

I would definitely read other books in this series.

Every once in a while I need a little mind candy; A book that requires no thinking at all. A romance usually fits the bill, they have a formula and you know what is going to happen, it is only a matter of how. Man meets woman, they are meant for each other but don't see it, They experience missed cues etc, until at the end they realize they are in love. This fit the bill. One problem with this particular story is that it seems the author wrote a very nice story , then decided that there wasn't a "bad"guy in the book, so added a prologue and a couple of extra chapters at the end that were unnecessary to so that she had a villain. Would have been just as enjoyable with out this contrived extra story line.

Grace Ackerly has no idea what type of trouble she's in when she meets Trevor Caldwell. The pursuit between the two is entertaining, trying to see who will win the match of wills.

I don't normally read this genre, but it was a free nook book from BN. I was surprised at how much I really enjoyed the story (as cheesy as some of it was) and got sucked in once I started. I would read the other books in the series as the Ackerly sisters are very entertaining. The only part that didn't seem to fit in well was the Harry/Henry/Watcher part. Seems like the author just wanted to add some extra intrigue for the story.

This was an easy romance novel, with not a lot of twists to the plot. Trevor insists that Grace will marry him. She thwarts him at every chance he gets, until she falls helplessly in love with him. However, it is too late, Trevor decides to avoid her and try to move on. Of course this doesn't happen, you know what happens they fall hard for each other, squabble about it, and finally just give in to their feelings. A little twist at the end has Grace in danger, which ultimately puts Trevor and a couple others in danger as well. And once again, you know how it ends Grace in Trevor's arms, finally as his wife and countess.

I liked the story but thought the side story about Henry/Harry was silly. How can Grace who seems to remember/pick up on everything not remember a childhood friend she spent so much time playing with. And likewise for the town... Harry grows up there and comes back as Henry and no one seems to notice/remember? Other than that I liked the book.

Eeyup. Another free e-book for my Nook.

Again, I don't really have a memory about this book. What I do remember about it, it wasn't bad as far as a period romance goes. Then again, I don't really read that kind of book and I'm hoping the ratings for these ebooks don't skew my Recommended Reads section too much towards bodice rippers and heaving bosoms. ~_~

This was a Free Friday book when I downloaded it. This is not a genre I prefer because I find too many cliches in the genre for me to find most books enjoyable, and my dislike for the genre is why this only gets 2 stars. Please check to make sure it is still free before downloading.

1. I don't understand Grace's big hangup about marriage. It was never really explained.

2. I don't understand why Lord What's-his-Name wanted Grace when she was such a bitch.

3. I don't understand why Henry returned to Pelthamshire under an assumed name. Why was that necessary??

A beautiful romance book set in the 1800s. Kind of reminded me of Joe in Little Women. Nice read! The bit of drama with the other man chasing her ended a bit on the cheesy side though. Good easy read anyways.

With the exception of the Harry/Henry section, I did enjoy this book. Why do so many authors use the storyline with the girl getting dressed up as a guy and going out to play poker? It is not very believable. Other than that this is a sweet love story.

Really, I'd give it two and a half stars, if I could. It wasn't awful, but there was just something lacking in it for me. The writing is decent, as is the pacing, but there was a sinister subplot that served absolutely no purpose at all, save to stretch out the ending.
