Nigel May has been described as "the UK's male Jackie Collins" and is an author, TV host and journalist. His three fiction novels have all been published by Bookouture.
His first glam fiction novel was TRINITY, an action-packed blockbuster (or bonkbuster) about the lives of the rich and famous. Glamour, beauty, fame and celebrity mix with murder, intrigue and danger to create an explosive novel which gained incredible reviews and fans across the globe. His follow-up was the glitz-meets-grit whodunit ADDICTED which was also a huge success and once again dived into the diamond-dipped world of the mega-rich but showed that all of the money and fame in the world do not always make for a happy ending. His third novel SCANDALOUS LIES is steeped in secrets, sin, sex and scandal and takes readers around the world as a mysterious celebrity disappearance is investigated. His books have been Amazon best sellers, read by celebrities and fellow authors alike, and have proved that a man can successfully write in a 'bonkbuster world' that has always been a strongly female domain.
Nigel was the only male writer amongst 44 authors featured in the chart-topping, beach-read anthology of short-stories SUNLOUNGER. He also contributed a short story to SUNLOUNGER 2.
On television he regularly presents on UK shopping channels where he has built up a substantial following. He has also featured on Channel 4, C5, ITV and broadcast live from America. He is also one of the UK's most popular craft personalities, having launched his own successful range, A-May-Zing.
As a writer he has written for many of the UK's most successful magazines and newspapers, specialising in showbiz and celebrity, as well as writing on subjects ranging from relationships through to exotic travel.
Oh Bookouture... Have you ever published a bad book? If you have, I haven't read it yet... Yet another great read!
Amy and Riley Hart have it all. A fabulous marriage, and bucket loads of cash. But when one fateful night changes everything, Amy is left without her husband and also her beloved best friend. Six months later she receives a letter in the mail... From Riley... But how could this be? She watched him die... Or did she? The chase is on for Amy to find a murderer, and the truth about her seemingly perfect life.
What a delightful, fun and HOT story! Yes ladies and gentlemen, this book is not for the under 18's. Its full of scandal and lots of sweaty romps between the sheets... Also add a bit of violence and suspense and a hell of a mystery and it was quite the page turner.
It was quite a ride - kept me guessing, almost until the very end. I figured out part of the picture towards the end, but the complexity of it still took me by surprise.
The format was slightly difficult to get used to. There was a lot of chopping and changing back and forth in time, to sometimes seemingly random points in time before and after the fateful night. But I soon got used to the format. I quite like books that do this when they are done well.
I really enjoyed Amy's quest to find out who "tried" to murder her husband. There were lots of twists and turns, lots of sordid secrets and you couldn't help but get into the story. There were perhaps a few too many characters and a bit too much going on for me to enjoy it to its fullest potential, at times it dragged on a bit for me. But overall it was a really good read. Even though the barrage of characters got on my nerves a bit, it was great that you literally had so many potential bad guys to choose from, all with their own motives.
Would I recommend Deadly Obsession?
Yes, who doesn't like a good bit of drama, intrigue, sex, money, power and violence? I will have to check out more books by Nigel May, and It was another hit from the ever impressive Bookouture.
Many thanks to author Nigel May and my favourite publisher Bookouture via NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
What would you do if you saw your husband killed right in front of you ... identified his body ... had him cremated 6 months ago ... and then received a letter written by him 2 days previously?
This is the conundrum that Amy Hart finds herself in. The letter states he is still alive but he wants her to find out who was responsible for 'killing' him before they can be together again. He then lists a series of names.
Once Amy can breath again, she starts a search ...not knowing who she can trust or believe.
The book alternates chapters. First one that is describing present day, then the next showing what has happened in the past with various people they both knew. It's not in date order, but does coincide with present information.
There are so many lies and secrets .. it's hard to find anyone who is actually who they present themselves to be. There are attempts made on her life ... and then bodies start mounting up. She's starting to realize that she never knew the man she loved and married.
WARNING: EXPLICIT SEXUAL SITUATIONS
The mystery/thriller part of the book was really good ... very well written. Characters were developed as finely as I've ever seen. I found myself reading faster the further into the book I got .. and then slowing down so I wouldn't miss any of those delicious details that made the book what it was.
My thanks to the author / Bookouture / NetGalley who furnished a digital copy in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
My first (and certainly not my last) Nigel May book, so I had zero expectations. What I do know is that I was intrigued. The author is a man writing a book that looks fit to rival that of authors such as Jackie Collins? Don’t be ridiculous! Well, it seems the only ridiculous one is me…for making that statement. It seems Nigel May really IS the male rival to ‘Bonkbuster’ authors. There is one thing that doesn’t seem right to me though. This book oozed a bit of a crime related theme with a whole bunch of naughtiness thrown in. This is like a Spicy Crime…seriously that’s the only way I can describe it!
Amy Barrowman is the shining star in this book and her life with her husband Riley Hart seems to be like something straight out of a Celebrity Magazine. Riley has taken over his father’s business and Amy is running her much dreamed about Club the Kitty Kat. Almost as soon as you are ensconced into their beautiful life, Riley is gunned down in Amy’s club and that is where all the problems begin! In all honesty Amy was a likeable character but it was clear from the outset she was a little naïve when it came to her husband.
Amy is now determined to avenge her husband’s death and what starts out as a seemingly straightforward task, her life takes on a whole new meaning. As the book progresses things get increasingly worse and it seems that every new character adds another layer of complexity to the life Amy once knew. There is danger, suspense and a whole bunch of raunchy sex thrown in for good measure. What’s not to like, that’s the question I posed to myself. The answer was absolutely nothing. This was a deliciously decadent read!
Being an avid Crime, Thriller and Mystery reader, I sometimes switch out to the lighter hearted books with the occasional ‘Bonkbuster’ thrown in. This is like the perfect combination of the two. A fantastic read for both men and women this is certainly an author I will be following closely in the future.
I went into this novel thinking a young widow (Amy, our MC) was trying to determine who killed her husband, his assistant and her best friend. At 25% in I wasn't really seeing what was being developed. In lieu of descriptive adjectives, it seemed like every other page contained name dropping of either music scores, actors, VIPS, clothing labels or if the author was really on a roll multiple combinations of the above. The name dropping didn't really build or set a scene to me and I quickly tired of it; unfortunately it was riddled throughout the novel.
Everyone is/was cheating but Amy and she's just too naive and clueless to know what is going on until after the fact when it's spelled out for her by everyone she talks to. It seems our widow's husband was very desirable and had a zipper problem on his pants. His fly just couldn't stay shut. The more I read the less I liked Amy as she came across weak and stupid. Blinded by love, money and sex she was totally ignorant of her husband and his associates true natures. As facts about everyone are revealed it was hard to feel sorry for her. She was the proverbial ostrich with its head in the sand.
The book introduces a number of characters as potential killers, but as you are reading about "gangsters" almost every male is a killer - the question is whether he was "the killer". Unfortunately in this book, every female is presented as looking for sex or love wrapped in sex. The book seemed to revolve more around everyone's peccadilloes than about unearthing facts of who killed whom.
Although written in 3rd person you do get multiple viewpoints - mainly viewpoints from the bedroom, the office desk, etc. Almost every character is presented in past and present from their viewpoint and sometimes from Amy's. The book jumped back and forth between every character's past and present like a pinball machine. Luckily there were headers giving dates or it would have really been confusing. But still, it was too much. A lot of the scenes just seemed to meander without much point but to include more sex scenes. It seemed like character development was dependent on labels and who the character was having sex with.
The conclusions to the mystery are not necessarily revealed during Amy's conversations with suspects but felt more like a pattern of elimination of suspects by death and then the real killer is provided to us fait acompli in the final scene. The epilogue definitely provided a nice little look at the future but seemed a little too over the top in it's attempt to wrap everything up.
Thanks for NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review. I just wish I could say that I loved it, but unfortunately it just didn't appeal to me.
OMG what a corker... talk about addictive! This is my first book by Nigel May and definitely won't be me last I absolutely loved it. Knowing Nigel May is a bonkbuster author I wasn't sure what to expect with Deadly Obsession, This is Gangland at its best mixed with hot saucy sex scenes, you are seriously in for a treat.
The story starts off in London 2015 where we meet Amy Heart who is married to millionaire Riley Hart, Men want to be him and women want to bed him. Who wouldnt he is one hot Alpha male. Riley and Amy's best friend Laura are shot to death at the nightclub they own. So Amy is out for revenge to hunt the killer down after She receives a mysterious letter detailing a list of suspects including Riley’s sworn enemy, actor Grant Wilson. Having followed Amy on this action-packed Journey, I could not help but sympathise with her. Has secrets unravel throughout the story we learn that Riley isn't the man she thought he was and Laura, being what I can only describe as a maneater!
Well what can I say this is seriously one hell of a read. I was gripped from the start Nigel knows how to keep the reader's attention. I totally love his style of writing I found this a easy and following read and I love how Nigel leaves you hanging on a chapter and then flicks back to past. Leaving me on tenterhooks. This is will have you turning the pages and wanting more. And I have to say WOW what an ending I wasn't expecting that Nigel had me totally fooled. This was definitely a OMG moment where found myself on the edge of my seat having palpitations. I thought my heart was going to stop beating.
This book is ideal for Martina cole and Kimberley Chambers fans which I highly recommend giving it a massive hot and saucy 5 stars.
Thank you to Bookouture and Netgalley for a Advanced readers copy in exchange for a honest review
I received this as an arc from net galley in exchange for an honest review. What would you do if you saw your husband killed right in front of you. ... Identified his body. ..... Had him cremated. ..... Then six months later received a letter written by him two days ago? Wow. OMG. Wow. Absolutely amazing read. I loved the story and the characters. Amy was my favourite character. Wow. What a read. I loved the ending too. This is a must read and I would highly recommend this book. Definitely worth more than 5 *.
Perhaps Nigel May’s other titles fare better than Deadly Obsession, but this novel was a chore. The plot was interesting enough. However, the writing is overly verbose and there’s so much unnecessary backstory that I skimmed the last third in which the whodunnit reveal was too far fetched. Jackie Collins it ain’t.
ARC kindly provided via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
DNF at 62% - No Rating
For some reason this one wasn't sticking with me. I kept trying to get into it - I really did, but I just couldn't get hooked on it or caught up in the story.
Basically the storyline is that Amy Hart is present at a shootout in the club that her and her husband run, which sees the death of three people - his assistant, Amy's best friend, and her husband himself, Riley Hart. 6 months later Amy receives a letter from Riley stating that he's alive and listing people he believes as suspects in his "murder". Riley is requesting Amys help in finding out who was responsible.
What follows is mash-up of chapters flicking back and forth between the present day and different memories in the past - not just of Amy herself, but of other characters in the story as well - many of them suspects on Rileys list.
It seems Amy is quite the naive character, discovering all these things about her husband that she was totally oblivious to when he was alive, yet everyone else either seemed to know or to have an inkling about.
Riley is portrayed as a bit of an a*hole to be honest - I don't really like the way his character was portrayed in what I did read of the novel.
As for the other characters it just keeps flicking back and forth too much and all the things going on just seem to be getting dragged out a bit too much for my like. I was feeling a bit like the story needs to just get on with it.
Part of me is curious as to what is going to happen in the rest of the story, but just not enough for me to really care about finishing it. Too long and too much plot dragging for me.
A great idea for a story but I just don't think its my kind of writing style.
First of all let me start by saying, If you are looking for a book that is going to get hold of you and drag you right into the pages from the first page to the last, then this is the book for you.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this.
Riley and Amy Hart, a pretty hot couple, not only are they sexy they are rich too. Pretty much the perfect happy couple. Or that is at least what Amy thinks. Or thought, until her husband is shot dead in their nightclub. Who could possible do something like this, kill innocent people. Only who is the innocent one. We soon learn that people are just not as they seem. And it becomes a big issue about who you can and can't trust. Is Amy really in the right state of mind, to decide who she can talk with, who she can trust. Or is every one out to take her for a ride.
This is the second book by Nigel May that I have read, and it is just as good as the first one I read, which I must say was pretty awesome. I have one more of Nigel's books to read on my kindle, and one more I need to purchase to read, but I will be doing that sooner rather than later. This book does not disappoint, there was no stage all the way through that I wasn't sat wide eyed reading wondering just what the hell else can happen.
I just can't say enough good things about this book. It really is an awesome read.
Super big thanks to Netgalley, The Publishers and Nigel May for allowing me a review copy of this Amazingly fantastic book.
Wow what a book! Amy thought she had everything she'd ever want. Married to the love of her life, a great business and fantastic holidays. But everything changes when her husband, Riley, is gunned down in front of her. 6months later she receives a letter supposedly from Riley telling her he's alive and giving her a list of suspects of people who could have killed him. When Amy sets of to try and find out the truth she discovers that her life and the people in it aren't as idyllic as she thought. I really enjoyed this book, the mystery/thriller part was exceptionally well done and kept me reading and guessing until the end. The characters were well developed, varied and colourful and I enjoyed reading about them and was interested in their developing stories. I particularly liked Amy who I originally thought of as very annoying and ended up really liking. She is very naïve but she ends up showing everyone what she is capable of and standing up for herself. I can definitely see why the author is being described as the male Jackie Collins as there is a lot of sex in this book, some of it quite graphic but in a way this is downplaying the author's considerable writing skills and could put some people off reading what is a great book!
This was the first book by Nigel May that I have read but it definitely won't be my last and I will be recommending it to others. Thank you to Netgalley and Bookoutre for giving me this advanced copy.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I am a fan of this authors previous books. The way he can come up with a story in the same vein as those written by Jackie Collins is quite something. I couldn't wait to read this one to see if it lived up to his previous books. I can honestly say it did, and then some.
Amy has lost the love of her life, Riley. She is trying to piece back her shattered heart, and life. What she isn't expecting is to find herself in the middle of a mystery which could very well cost her something even more precious - her own life.
On receiving a letter Amy has to decipher clues she doesn't even have as yet in a bid to find out what happened to her husband. En route to the answers she finds herself doubting everything she ever knew about him, and their marriage. She uncovers a deception which goes far deeper than she thought possible, and finds herself in danger on more than one occasion.
I kept hoping upon hope that what the author was suggesting throughout the story was, in fact, true. To know what I'm taking about you need to read it yourself. Suffice to say I'm not going to mention if I got my wish or not. However when all is finally revealed it was the perfect ending.
I love this authors books and can't wait to see what comes next.
3.5* ..... Murder, gangsters, secrets, mystery, suspense, sex and lies. Although it had all the makings to be a 5*, I found most of chapters constantly going back into the past unnecessary and also thought the book was too long. I really liked Amy, Dolly, Jimmy and the gutsy Caitlyn, but Genevieve and Lily left me cold. I was kept guessing throughout the book about Riley and the letters Amy was receiving and certainly never guessed the killer. I enjoyed the journey with Amy as she learned to stand up for herself and become a stronger and better person although it was a tough journey through all the betrayals from the people she loved and trusted the most. I was kept interested most of the time, but as I said before, I found Deadly Obsession just too long. This is my first book by Nigel May and I do look forward to reading more as I love this genre. Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this ARC.
Nigel May's novel is like a rose losing it's petals until all you are left with are the brutal thorns. With each chapter he peels away the lies and deceit. It is sensual, mysterious, and gritty. The characters have such a realism about them, vicious, cunning and ruthless, but there are always victims, even if they don't always realise it. Love is blind was certainly the case for Amy when she met and married Riley. Wealthy, handsome and 100 % behind all her desires and dreams, but when Riley is murdered everything goes belly up and with events that follow the rose coloured spectacles that Amy had on shatter. A sensational book that kept me totally fascinated as it unravelled. Highly recommended for a gripping nail bitting murder mystery. This novel is very explicit. I wish to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for allowing me to read and review this book.
I have read all of Nigel May's books and with each one he writes I feel like he gets better with each story especially with his development of characters.
This book is full of drama, scandal and sex and I loved finding out about the true Riley at one point I thought what more could she uncover but Amy didn't know the real person she was married to.
I really liked how throughout the story Amy grew on me as a person and by the end she was a strong independent woman once again I did like the other characters and how their stories all inter linked with the story, I especially liked Dolly as a secondary character I thought she really shone out and I wanted to know a bit more about her.
I truly recommend Nigel' s books to anyone needing a bit of scandal to entertain them. I can't wait to read Nigels next book.
I saw this book mentioned in a brilliant book group I'm a member of on Facebook #TBConFB. Curiosity got the better of me and I decided to read it. When I read the blurb it reminded me of Jackie Collins style bonkbusters ! Books which I had read many years ago. Admittedly I was quite dubious when I realised it was written by a man. No way could a male write as good as Jackie Collins when it comes to books like this , I thought. Boy was I wrong. This book was brilliant. It has everything; mystery, suspense , steamy sex scenes. It was all there. A very easy read but one that kept me interested.
I will definitely be looking out for more books by Mr May
My thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for the ARC in return for an honest review.
Nigel May's delicious new bonkbuster Deadly Obsession had me hooked from the off. It's juicy, fast-paced and full of terrific gangland characters. This is a well-written gritty book with a decent plot and some excellent turns of events. When Amy Hart receives a letter from her dead husband she is set on a path that unearths secrets and lies she could never imagine possible. This gripping read takes the reader on a journey filled with sex, scandal and surprises. Deadly Obsession reminded me of books by Martina Cole and was thoroughly enjoyable. First book by Nigel May for me but certainly not the last. Thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for my copy.
Really unlike me not to finish a book but this one, two chapters in, has beaten me. The writing is atrocious, chock-full of over the top analogies, totally unbelievable conversations and stereotypes. I tried but after my 50th ‘oh, my god - that’s so bad!, I decided that life is too short.
Great read...first book I've read by Nigel May & def won't be the last!! Had me hooked right from the start & I certainly never worked out how it would end-great twist!! If you like Martina Cole gangster type reads then this is perfect-well worth 5 stars!!
A book that kept me on my toes and made me want to flip to the next chapter every time. I appreciated that we got to see multiple perspectives and had to piece together some parts of the story before they were written out on the page. There were some random errors with names being flipped or the timeline being incorrect, but other than that, a great murder mystery. I had honestly stopped trying to figure out who killed Riley because I just wanted to learn more about the characters and didn’t want the story to end.
Really enjoyed reading this story. The main character Amy was a bit of a drip, but that just makes the other characters more fab! And the music nostalgia was amazing.
Nigel May is one of the authors I discovered when I first started blogging last year, when I had the chance to read his glamorous and seductive novel, Scandelous Lies, which you can read my review of here - dubbed as a bonkbuster writer that lives up to the likes of the late, great Jackie Collins, I was eagerly awaiting his latest work of art - an boy, let me tell you, Deadly Obsession did not disappoint!
Deadly Obsession wasn't as sexed up as Nigel's previous book, it was darker, meaner, grittier and an utter page turner!
It started with the main female character Amy, opening a letter from her husband Riley - slight catch, Riley was dead! Immediately as a reader your mind started whirling and if this was real life could you just imagine what Amy was feeling? Husband - dead. Burried six months ago. Letter dated two days ago? How?
How indeed? Nigel May took me on a complete page turning journey with this one. The book was a mixture of chapters from now and chapters from then - then being at The Kitty Kat Club which is where the fateful night took place and then to memories of prior to the event too.
Amy, now living in London, embarks on a journey back to her Mancunian routes to find out how and why Riley survived. As she does this, she discovers that her beloved Husband was not all he seemed and she has to question if she really knew him at all. Visiting old faces, Amy is told of many secrets, lies and murders which Nigel is perfect at writing - as well as the odd sex scene.
As Amy ticks off all the suspects one by one trying to find out who not only killed Riley but also her best friend Laura, I felt many of the emotions as a reader that she had as a character - shock, anger, sadness.... Deadly Obsessions literally had it all!
One of the things I loved last year with Scandalous Lies was the twists and turns of the plot. Deadly Obsession had more of these than I could expect - as I was thinking one thing, the complete opposite happened - particularly the ending... poor Amy - how many bombshells can one girl take?!
I loved several of the characters within this book and there was a real mixture too - Lily was feisty and had a matter of fact attitude, Grant thought he was gods gift with his good looks and acting skills whilst Dolly was fun and flirty! An of course there was Amy - little innocent Amy. I felt for her at times but then as the shocks came with every secret and lie discovered, I wanted to scream at my kindle that she was being naive and needed to grow up, but ultimately I just wanted her to find some closer after all she had been through, and the epilogue that Nigel wrote, was one that I found myself smiling at.
If your looking for a book that will keep you on your toes but has all the added bonus of being a glitz and glam bonkbuster, then I can't recommend Deadly Obsessions enough. Nigel May is definitely one I'm keeping my eye on for future releases!
The king of the bonkbuster is back with this new enthralling book. If you like your books full of sex, deceit, suspense, surprises and hidden revelations than Deadly Obsession is definitely the book for you.
Deadly Obsession hooked me from the first few pages. Amy had seen her husband killed, she cremated him, and six months later she receives a letter from him, dated just two days previous. Obviously she is shocked and has many questions, especially as the letter asks Amy to gain answers and to make sense of that dreadful night.
What follows is a high paced book as Amy discovers that nothing about her life, and her marriage was as it seems, and that Riley was involved in all sorts of dishonourable things. It is up to Amy to start questioning everything that she has ever held dear to her, to finally get some answers.
I'm not going into details about the majority of the story, as I wouldn't want to spoil any of the shocks, nor can I perhaps explain things without perhaps giving a clue to the final outcome. What I can say is I was as shocked as Amy was at each turn, and there is a huge cast, of characters, mainly not so nice, to try to get to know and to unravel the secrets of.
I would say is don't trust your gut feeling about anyone and enjoy the journey, and trying to guess the ultimate outcome. I didn't have a clue and the last quarter of the book was unputdownable.
Throughout the story as Amy is trying to find out the truth, we get flashbacks to her and Riley's marriage, and her friendship with Laura. We also get to know some of the other key characters pretty well, and a whole variety of backstory is explained, as well as few fantastic sub plots going on.
Deadly Obsession is a fantastic story, that will have you gasping in disbelief at what Riley is really like. I loved seeing how Amy grows as a person during the novel, from someone who is relatively gullible, to someone who will stand up for herself, complete with added backbone.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this review copy. This was my honest opinion.
Deadly Obsession is the first book by Nigel May that I have read and it totally exceeded my expectations, it was gritty, sexy, and scandalous and an utterly brilliant read. I can totally see why he has been dubbed the “male Jackie Collins” as his writing has that glamorous and slightly dark style. In Deadly Obsession we meet Amy who is still grieving for the loss of her husband, her nightclub and her perfect glamorous lifestyle. Six months after his death Amy receives a letter handwritten by Riley dated just two days earlier telling her not everything is not as is seems and someone needs to pay for his death. Confused and upset Amy heads back to Manchester and her old life to try and figure out exactly what happened on that fateful night and if Riley is actually alive after all. As Amy begins to unravel events leading up to Riley’s death she realises her life wasn’t as perfect as she thought and she’s actually treading in quite dangerous circles. Can she find out what really happened to Riley and keep herself safe? I was hooked on this book from the very start, the mysterious death of Riley had me intrigued and the more I read the more I enjoyed it as more characters became involved and the plot twists kept coming. It’s a book filled with shocks and an ending that you just won’t see coming, at least I didn’t! I loved how this book was written taking us between the past and the present so we could build up a picture of Amy’s life with Riley and now as she searches for answers. I also loved that others characters are brought to life in their own chapters so we gained the feelings and actions of all the main players in the book, making the tangled web around Amy even more convincing. Thank you to Bookouture and Netgalley for the review copy, I’ve found another great author and cannot wait to read Nigel’s other books. I rate Deadly Obsession 5 out of 5 I loved it!
Set in the present, 6 months after Amy's husband has been killed - shot dead in their nightclub - Amy receives a handwritten letter through the post from him. He says he can't explain but he's sorry and he needs her help. So begins Amy's quest to untangle the lies that surround her (once) perfect marriage. With so many duplicitous people in her life, who can she trust and will she pick the right people to help her get to the truth. In between the telling of the story, certain elements of backstory are explained in flashbacks. We see how certain characters met and glimpse insight into events that shape and expand on what we learn from the story in the present. It does chop about a bit all over the place in time but I found this method of storytelling excellently executed as it added substance and information effectively and economically without being distracting. As always with this author, we have some great characters, some definitely larger than life and others familiar from parts in the author's other books. There's some great interaction between them, especially the descriptions of Amy and Laura's escapades. There are also some great one-liners and some delicious comparisons! No decent "bonkbuster" is worthy of that name without the obligatory "intimate" scenes. There are definitely plenty in this book but all in context and very tastefully "titivating!" The story is compelling, short punch chapters play it out quite quickly and assist the reader in the art of not being able to put the book down! All in all, this is great addition to the author's already brilliant catalogue. Roll on the next book, I'll be waiting with baited breath.
I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Amy and Riley seem to have it all, they're glamorous and rich, have an amazing lifestyle, the owners of the best nightclub in town, lifelong friends - who could ask for more? When Riley and Laura, Amy's best friend, are gunned down in the club, Amy is left devastated and asking questions. Who would shoot these popular fun loving people? Who would have reason? But all is not as it seems as Amy starts to discover the secret murky lifestyle of what she thought was her ideal husband. He was heavily involved in dodgy dealings and much, much more, and while Amy is shocked by these findings, she is determined to find out the truth. Out of the blue she receives a letter from Riley - is he still alive? Read the book to find out more!! This book is cleverly written and Nigel has a style of writing that leaves you wanting more - to keep turning page after page. You want to know what happens, you think you can guess what happens but shocker......you will never guess the ending! What an absolutely fabulous twist! The characters are well thought through and interlink very cleverly. The switch between now and then works very well. Although it states that this is a 'bonkbuster' there are very few 'sexy' scenes in the the book and from a personal point of view, the book would work just as well without them. Once again I've been impressed with one of Nigel 's books and can't wait to get onto the next one.
Wow…..absolutely loved this book. This is the first time I have read anything by Nigel May….and defiantly will not be the last. It had me hooked from the get-go.
The story is about a millionaire lifestyles, secrets, gangsters and innocence with a large dollop of sauce. I fell in love with the lead character Amy and was routing for her throughout, although at times her naivety drove me crazy. As secrets unfold and lies are found out it was hard not to sympathise with her losing the people and relationships she thought were true.
The subplots of each of the characters in the book held your attention well and you felt like you got to know them all, even when in most cases you really wish you hadn’t. Didn’t think I would ever find myself routing for a bad guy.
The music references and television detail that was there was exceptional and easy to relate to with it being my age bracket which really helped to mould yourself to the lead character Amy and her ‘best’ friend Laura.
I loved the style of writing between the now and then. It makes you plough through each chapter with speed to get to the answers you need to find out. As for the ending, as a book lover I don’t like spoilers, but by golly that was a corker of an ending, you think you know then bang, all change, you don’t….brilliantly written.
Deadly Obsession is a murder mystery with a lot of glitz and glamour! By far this book had more characters than most and it takes a few chapters to get used to Nigel May's writing style. I found the protagonist Amy very uninspiring, weak and gullible. I can't imagine her story would sit very well with any woman with half a brain. At times her nature just falls into the stupid category. However I was gripped and wanted to know exactly what happened to her husband and what led to her being on this wild goose chase. Nigel builds up the story to meet a very big scene towards the end but in parts I felt there were too many irrelevant characters who did not add to the story but were being explored. I didn't get much sense of Manchester as a city but I appreciated the fact it was set outside of London. The ending did live up to what I was expecting and I found that to be a positive! Was it a believable story? No. Did it keep me entertained? In most parts. My real reservations are with how the women were portrayed as weak, sex obsessed and needing male attention to justify their existence whilst the men were presented as powerful, entitled and possessive. I think those are dangerous ideals to project... Over all I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romance, erotica and a psychotic murder mystery. The biggest surprise to me in the novel was how clueless Amy is!
Thank you to NetGalley.com and to the publisher for the ARC of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
After reading heavy book after heavy book, I needed this. Nigel May has the potential to fill the smut writing shoes of Jackie Collins. His latest adventure was heavy on the suspense, the drama, the danger and the uber-descriptive bedroom scenes. Just may need a tall glass of cold water to cool down before moving on to the next book.
What I loved: The suspense as Amy tries to untangle the mess that is her life, she changes from a naïve idiot to a strong woman who fights for what she believes in. Thank goodness she does; she was beginning to be one of the world’s biggest doormats for all of the people who thought so little of her.
What I didn’t love: There would be a scene where Amy was reminiscing, and it would basically be about her remembering her own sex life. After a while, it seemed like her marriage was based on sex, shopping, and spas - not a horrible way to live, but then you don’t wonder why everyone thought she was an idiot.
