RAISE THE BAR This is what it's all been building up to...Shin, Izumi and Kagurazuka compete against one another in the high jump! Then, Sekime gets his own moment in the spotlight when his classmates see him with a strange girl. But if we're talking "strange," she doesn't even compare to the woman who comes onto campus and sweeps an embarrassed Nakatsu off his feet...Nakatsu's mother!
Hisaya Nakajo (中条比紗也) was a Japanese shōjo manga artist. She also used the names Peco Fujiya and Ryou Fumizuki for doujinshi with her circle, Daisanteikoku.
Volume 19 is peak dorm-life sitcom—unexpected visitors, awkward tension, and everyone somehow in the wrong place at the wrong time. The romance simmers while the comedy bursts into full bloom, with Nakatsu stealing scenes as usual. It’s the kind of volume where you want to yell “JUST TELL THEM ALREADY!” but also don’t want the fun to end. Four stars for perfectly timed gags and the endless parade of misunderstandings.
I love this series of manga. It's like a soap opera, only add some sexy gay Japanese males, a girl who is pretending to be a boy and has no clue that her roommate has caught on. This series seems like it will never end... seriously. I hope it doesn't, cause I love the characters and plot so much. I can't wait for #20 to come out!
This one's had a similar progression to Assassination Classroom, Black Bird and Cheeky Angel for me: I collected them all before getting very far with the series, and it's decent enough to keep on with, but there's little or no chance I'm going to reread it, so it's destined for the used bookstore box. Not being a DNF like Ouran High School or Special A is a minor mark in its favor.
Romance trope for this volume is "just one bed," engineered in an even less convincing way than usual, if that's possible.
The career choice survey makes Mizuki realize that her dormitory idyll with Sano won't last forever, which to me points toward the author acknowledging that her dormitory idyll manga won't last forever, either. I'm sure there's a crisis or two in the offing (there's one for Nakatsu coming up next volume, it seems) before our HEA.
I like this volume because we get some brotherly interaction. We also see Sano win although it felt forced. Plus, we see our characters having to make decisions about their future. It came off as real life and authentic. However, the romance is still too slow and not in a good way. I’m glad that the love triangle resolved before it became something real and hurtful. Anyways, it looks like everyone love Mizuki, eh. 3.7/5
The story is slowly moving along, but my inner feminist is DYING whilst Mizuki cares more about being there for Sano than thinking about her academic future...
I can't tell if Hana-Kimi is genuinely improving in quality, or if I'm growing so attached to the fate's of the characters that I imagine it's improving in quality. In any case, this volume wraps up the networking event storyline, which was actually so interesting and lead to so much development that I didn't realize how long it had gone on. The way that Shin and Sano, and Sano and his dad have reconnected tenuously through the arc has been really satisfactory.
We also really get to know Sekime a bit in the later chapters! I love taking a closer look at some of the background characters.
My main argument about the volume is Shin almost confessing his love to Mizuki. The trope of Perfect Clueless Girl Everyone Is In Love With For Seemingly No Reason is one of my absolute least favorites. I hope it's averted in further installments.
lol! It was so funny when Nakatsu's mama came to stay the night at the boys dorm and cleaned Nakatsu up! His hair was all slicked down and his clothes wear ironed and neat. Everyone was like, "Who's that?" LMAO That was funny. Way better than the last volume which was full of treasure hunt filler.
A very good volume. I love how almost everyone is pushing Sano and Mizuki together but they're still so oblivious and dumb. I really hope Shin comes back too.
