This is one of those manga series that irks the hell out of me because it is so well done that I want to read more despite being offended by the central concept. A 26-year-old businessman dating a 16-year-old school girl is pretty much the epitome of creepy, and yet I like the feisty personalities and the combative relationship. If the book were about a 36-year-old businessman and a 26-year-old college graduate I'd be pretty blissed out right now.
Seriously, the same week I read this, a 26-year-old local weatherman was fired when it was revealed he was dating and sexting 16-year-olds. It's not illegal, but everyone is bugging over the inappropriateness of it.
I'm probably going to read the next volume, but I'm going to hate myself for it.

Hana is pressed into a marriage meeting with Takane, a scion of a business empire, impersonating her sister to save her father's job! Ready to put that fiasco behind her Hana is shocked that Takane actually seems interested in her! She is exasperated by his immaturity but intrigued despite herself at the fun she has as they try to outwit one another...
Okay this is your typical romance shoujo manga with the poor girl, rich guy trope... BUT IT IS TURNED ON ITS HEAD BY THE TOTALLY COMPELLING POV!! First, there is the fact she is frugal and has realistic expectations due to an older sister who steers things her own way. And he is rather spoiled and immature, hahha. Then, there is the 10 years separating these two... and while in the scheme of things its not that different, she IS a HS student and he is a 26 year old man who shouldn't have any thoughts for someone NOT READY to get things on yet.
So intriguing premise! ...BUT does it work?! YEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! Impossibly this crazy situation that seems like it would be a stereotypical mess is amazingly unique and funny and too cute. We are still in the friends zone for now even though they both want to spend time with one another. The thing Yuki Shiwasu does well is to make what is a typical situation a little different. It makes Takane and Hana seem like a real couple doing THEIR OWN THING in THEIR OWN WAY!
A LOT of that has to do with Takane and Hana's personalities... He is asocial and rather self-centered but not because he has a selfish heart but because of his position. As a result it is SO FUNNY to see how he will react to the situations with down to earth Hana. And it is too cute to see Hana won over by Takane despite how conceited he is...
THE ART (you were waiting for me to talk art, weren't you?!) is TOTALLY your typical manga style... BUT the way Yuki Shiwasu frames things and the expressions she uses and Takane's creepy, evil SMILE!! GAH!!!! It makes you giggle and sigh dreamily and eagerly await the next page!! There is such depth to their relationship already and it comes out in the frames!!
There really aren't too many others in this manga yet... Hana has a couple BFFs and an older sister (her dad is pretty funny too!) Takane has his grandfather and a work colleague. There is this mysterious kid at Hana's school that keeps asking about Takane...
I thought about taking a star off for the other characters or development but realized I was TOTALLY SATISFIED with this volume! It made me happy and squeeeee and fangirl all over these two!!!

I did a thing. I thought to myself, I love reading manga and I own only one complete series so why don't I start buying and owning a complete set of series as I have a chance to purchase them easily now? First and foremost, let me apologise for that long sentence as it is quite confusing. Bottom line I started buying completed manga that I loved.
I don't know what made me want to buy Takane and Hana, except that I have really fond memories of reading it and thinking that it was funny as hell. And I can't regret that, the story is hilarious. BUT a thing I had completely ignored was the somewhat large age gap and the possibility of the story being viewed as one of grooming. I mean I'm no stranger to age-gap romance. The older I get, the more I understand it. But what I am against is age-gap romances when one is not quite mature or an adult. Yes, the story is cute and all but it still remains that Hana is just 16 years old. The sane part of me (not the fingerling or squealing part of me that laughs like a hyena at all the hilarious situations these two get into) is somewhat off-put by this fact. I wish the author had made Hana at least start college or at least 18 years old and going to go to college. That would have made this series a 4 stars or 4.5 stars.
Well, what's done is done. I might as well just enjoy their antics for now as I've bought 13 out of the 18 books already. Also considering I was gonna start buying Daytime Shooting Stars and then remembering that too has a high schooler and teacher romance sub-plot, I think young me had a serious issue of understanding what's morally correct or not.

Rating is for the first volume of the manga.
To all fans of romance and shoujo, I'm begging you. Please read this. I don't know why there isn't even a proper listing of this manga here on Goodreads, because it certainly deserves more attention than the other shitty romances out there. I'm extremely fastidious when it comes to shoujo manga, and God knows how many I've dropped after a few chapters because of a very, very annoying female protagonist and an utterly cliche plot (which is the reason why I'm not reading much shoujo these days, and I'm fiddling around with josei and seinen instead). Not to mention the other mangas that seem so promising at the beginning, but will inevitably succumb to the dark side later on, and soon enough it is nothing but a bundle of trite and infuriating elements. This manga, though. The main character is so badass and Yuki Shiwasu turns a lot of shoujo cliche upside down. And it never failed to make me laugh. I just hope that it doesn't veer away from these good points later on.

I’ve been recommended this series by a friend non stop for a while and I’m glad I picked it up!! I really enjoyed this volume! You can’t beat a moody ceo type!

This manga suffers from a case of insta-love (I mean technically it's insta-blackmail because the love interest forces the 16 year old protagonist to spend time with him or else he'll fire her father) and I found it very boring to read.
I can understand why others gave it such a high rating though since the art was beautiful but I've just read and watched so many books/movies...etc with the same premise and it brought nothing new to the table, plus the humour was not very interesting for me, so it was quite boring altogether.
The characters were 2 dimensional and it was too light hearted and dull for me (especially since the love interest is literally blackmailing her? Why is the main character not furious? Why is she not sad? Why does she not show any emotion in general unless she wants to mock the immature love interest?). I also find the fact that the main character IS ONLY 16 and the love interest is 23 (or 26? I forget) very uncomfortable, but then again Boys Over Flowers was very problematic and I still enjoyed that manga way more than this.

I really enjoyed the opening volume of Takane & Hana - I especially love the use of chibi drawings and the main characters' facial expressions - they often had me laughing out loud! :D
The only reason why this is not a 5 star read is because at times I found that it was hard to discern who was speaking and to differentiate between thoughts and speech which sometimes left me confused and forced me to go back over some of the scenes.
Despite the above though this was a really fun and very cute read <3

I’ve been on a manga kick lately, so when I saw ShojoBeat’s new series, Takane & Hana, I wanted to give it a go. I didn’t even bother with reading the synopsis (I seem to do that a lot). The cover was cute, I had some time to kill, so I picked it up and gobbled it up.
Hana is coerced to attend an arranged marriage meeting when her older sister refuses to go. Afraid of losing his job, Hana’s father begs her to pretend to be her sister. Hana argues that at 16, she can’t pass for a 23 year old, but goes any way. The meeting is with Takane Saibara, the heir to Takaba Group, a powerful conglomerate with immense sway over the economy. Hana’s dad doesn’t want to offend the Chairman, Takane’s grandfather.
The meeting is a disaster. Takane is blunt to the point of rudeness, and the fundamentals of polite small talk are beyond him. He makes Hana so angry that she throws her wig at him, hitting him in the face, then storms out of the room. For Takane, it’s a defining moment; finally someone has aroused his interest. Now the jaded man-child is going to get to know her better, at least until his usual boredom resurfaces and he moves on with his life.
I’ll admit that the age difference between Hana and Takane gave me the creeps. However, Hana’s bold, tell it like it is personality made me set my reservations aside. Unsettled by Takane’s interest in her, uncomfortable with the class differences between them, she rebuffs his attention. When he threatens to have her father fired, she agrees to humor him. She then gives him back every little bit of grief his high-handed I’m way better than you attitude deserves. He is a complete jerk at first, and it is easy to see why he has to have his grandfather help find him a spouse.
I enjoyed the opposites attract trope. Takane is spoiled, has way too much money, and puts value on nothing but himself. Hana is down to earth, has never had anything handed to her, and values everything around her, especially other people’s feelings. Considering how someone else feels isn’t exactly something that Takane excels at. In fact, he downright sucks at it. He’s used to getting his way, he’ll bully someone if he doesn’t get what he wants, and he is so jaded with how others treat him that he rarely considers the feelings of others. Hana isn’t impressed with him or his wealth, and that is such a novelty for him that he isn’t ready to just let it go.
As the heir to one of the wealthiest families in Japan, he never knows if someone likes him for himself or for his fortune. Hana, not accepting that he could actually be interested in her, speaks her mind and doesn’t let him get away with anything. How novel for Takane, to be called out on everything, from the flashy car he drives to the opulent meals he consumes. Hana is just as happy getting a hot dog from a street vendor or going to the movies, and she’s determined to show Takane that money isn’t everything.
I thought this was a cute read. I liked Hana and her outspokenness. Takane grew on me by the end of the volume. The art is lively, with attractive character designs and awesome shojo clothing. I’m looking forward to the next installment

You know what this manga taught me? Always read the blurb more closely when picking up a book. I mean, right at the moment when I realized this was going to be a love story between a 16-year old high school girl and a 26-year old working guy, I was destined to hate it on principle. Still, I thought, you know - maybe it will call out the problematic nature of such a relationship, maybe it will be subverted - something! But no dice.
The story goes like this - Hana goes to an arranged marriage meeting in place of her older (23 year old) sister, because her father’s boss and the company’s chairman had seen her sister in the office one day and decided she would be good for his grandson, Takane. Takane, for his part, sees that she is obviously not what he was expecting, and that she is quite young. He insults her and she walks out of the meeting.
However, he turns up the next day and the day after that and starts taking her out to dinner dates. It's mostly presented in a comedic form, like he's trying to get back at her for throwing his bouquet in his face. And there's the class difference between them - he's a privileged rich boy who doesn't know humility and she's the poor hardworking girl who is going to temper his abbrassive side. I guess that romance works but it's so cliched at this point that it's tiring.
And you know, despite the cliche, what my main problem with it was? That she could’ve easily been 20 and still the story wouldn't have had much of a difference. Currently it's trying to downplay the pedophilia with class gaps and ‘them being from different worlds’ but there's a major power imbalance that is being ignored in lieu of a passable romantic comedy. He is a decade older to her, an adult to her underage self, and he constantly threatens her with her dad's job to make her go out with him.
I'm certainly not continuing with this terrible excuse for a romance. And really, this genre needs to do better than just continue perpetuating sexist and pedophilic storylines.

My favourite new manga! At first I thought this was a one-shot (manga that wraps in just one issue, kinda like a short story) but then found out it was a full blown manga that had 3 volumes out already. And I couldn't be happier!
I find it delightful and laugh out loud funny even if there's nothing groundbreaking about it. Takane is incredibly childish and out of touch with society, and Hana his complete opposite. The age difference might be a problem for some (he's 10 years older than her) but the romance is very light. I have no doubt that they'll end up together but so far they have a complicated (and funny!) sort of friendship.
My only worry is that the author will let it go for too long like many other manga out there. I hope she wraps it up before it stops being fun.

Takane to Hana is a surprisingly engaging romance featuring a very unusual love interest. I found I wanted to keep reading just to see where the author was going to take this different kind of shoujo story. The first volume takes time to set up the romance and then future volumes expand the world and introduce a slew of new character and conflicts for our pair.Story: Hana's sister is perfect - someone who always attracts the right kind of guys. But when a wealthy customer convinces her to go on an Omiai for an arranged marriage, she wants to back out at the last minute. Thus Hana, much younger and still in high school, takes her sister's place if only so she can turn down the customer's young son for marriage. But Hana's refusal to put up with Takane - the young son - and his rudeness unwittingly draws his interest. Now Hana is stalked by the older conglomerate heir - and she has no idea what to do with him.
Takane is amusing - very similar in some ways to Doumyouji from Boys Over Flowers in that he is both self centered but also a bit unsure at the heart. Hana is grounded but quirky, a good foil for Takane as a result. The story flows easily and it is always amusing to see what Takane is going to say in his awkward asocial way. And each time Hana has to deal with him while also realizing he's kind of cool, too, in his own conceited way.
It's a good story and I'm looking forward to seeing where the story goes in future volumes.

This was my first manga that I’ve read. I have ordered the second volume already 😂. Their story is cute, the age gap is kinda big but I feel in Asian cultures it’s not that big of a deal. It’s a cute slow burn—enemies to lovers (almost). It’s a nice light read that I picked up in between books when I wanted to read but not get fully immersed in a book. I recommend!

Takane & Hana was a manga I knew going in that I would enjoy, but I didn't expect to love it so much?? This is easily one of my new favorite manga series!
Takane & Hana is a manga series that follows high school student Hana Nonomura, who stands in for her sister as part of an arranged marriage to business heir to Takaba Group, Takane Saibara and the comedic banter/ rivalry that develops between the two!
Where to start with this Takane & Hana! I originally learned about it through Goodreads as I was scrolling the new released manga and this one caught my eye! From the summary it seemed like there'd be enemies to lovers and a lot of funny/comedic moments and I was not wrong!
If I was to sum up this manga in one word it would be: Entertaining!
Its so incredibly funny too! With every page I was laughing at Takane & Hana's continuous enemies streak/rivalry they had going on and just seeing how these 2 dynamic main characters continuously interacted with each other!
The story starts with us learning that Hana's older sister Yukari was originally going to be involved in the arranged marriage to Takane, but she had other plans. So, in order to save her father's position at the company, Hana decided to take her place!
When they first meet, things do not go as planned and we learn Takane is a bit of a jerk--& Hana is not putting up with it!
Takane, through his very brash personality, tells Hana he's interested in her! Though they can't really stand each other, sparks are definitely there.
Both Takane & Hana are characters with such strong & conflicting, but also similar personalities and that's what makes their chemistry together so good!
Takane and Hana Vol. 1 chronicles their meeting and hangouts together as their "relationship" continues! What makes this series so funny is that they obviously are trying to out-wit one another, avoid each other as much as possible, and have the upper-hand when it comes to their banter, but something keeps them coming back to eachother!
I love how them being in different classes made for a lot of the comedic moments in this story and how in general, its a relevant and present discussion to their relationship.
As the story progresses we begin to see Takane isn't exactly the heartless person he appears to be. I loved seeing the little moments throughout their hangouts (*like the bowling date) when Hana would notice Takane's strides to make more of an effort to be a nicer person and be willing to try new things!
Takane & Hana made me realize just how much I love the "can't stand one another, but secretly love each other" Trope! Every scene they have together, even if their just thinking about each other just showed how much chemistry they had & I loved seeing their interactions so much.
We also see that even though they despise each other, Shiwasu just brings such a comedic and interesting dynamic to the both of them where I never know who they'll react to each other next!
All the supporting characters are all really well developed and bring even more humor & heart to this story! From Hana's friends Hikaruko & Mizuki, her sister Yukari, Takane's grandfather, & one of Hana's classmates who seems to be like a more important character in future volumes!
The art is so expressive and detailed! It reminded me a lot of Monthly Girls-Nozaki with the expressive faces and detail to the characters! I also love how detailed the backgrounds were.
Though it is a contemporary, I found the setting and atmosphere to be very present within this volume and seeing how it explored Japan through Takane & Hana's different backgrounds.
*I will admit that though this series is so funny & the chemistry between these characters is very good, there is a bit of an age gap between them!* (10 years) With Hana being 16 & Takane being 26--though it doesn't seem that way bc Takane seems like a really immature & bossy guy.
Regardless though this was a hilarious manga & I can't wait to see whats next with Takane & Hana's interesting dynamic!

Takane & Hana was a manga I knew going in that I would enjoy, but I didn't expect to love it so much?? This is easily one of my new favorite manga series!
Takane & Hana is a manga series that follows high school student Hana Nonomura, who stands in for her sister as part of an arranged marriage to business heir to Takaba Group, Takane Saibara and the comedic banter/ rivalry that develops between the two!
Where to start with this Takane & Hana! I originally learned about it through Goodreads as I was scrolling the new released manga and this one caught my eye! From the summary it seemed like there'd be enemies to lovers and a lot of funny/comedic moments and I was not wrong!
If I was to sum up this manga in one word it would be: Entertaining!
Its so incredibly funny too! With every page I was laughing at Takane & Hana's continuous enemies streak/rivalry they had going on and just seeing how these 2 dynamic main characters continuously interacted with each other!
The story starts with us learning that Hana's older sister Yukari was originally going to be involved in the arranged marriage to Takane, but she had other plans. So, in order to save her father's position at the company, Hana decided to take her place!
When they first meet, things do not go as planned and we learn Takane is a bit of a jerk--& Hana is not putting up with it!
Takane, through his very brash personality, tells Hana he's interested in her! Though they can't really stand each other, sparks are definitely there.
Both Takane & Hana are characters with such strong & conflicting, but also similar personalities and that's what makes their chemistry together so good!
Takane and Hana Vol. 1 chronicles their meeting and hangouts together as their "relationship" continues! What makes this series so funny is that they obviously are trying to out-wit one another, avoid each other as much as possible, and have the upper-hand when it comes to their banter, but something keeps them coming back to eachother!
I love how them being in different classes made for a lot of the comedic moments in this story and how in general, its a relevant and present discussion to their relationship.
As the story progresses we begin to see Takane isn't exactly the heartless person he appears to be. I loved seeing the little moments throughout their hangouts (*like the bowling date) when Hana would notice Takane's strides to make more of an effort to be a nicer person and be willing to try new things!
Takane & Hana made me realize just how much I love the "can't stand one another, but secretly love each other" Trope! Every scene they have together, even if their just thinking about each other just showed how much chemistry they had & I loved seeing their interactions so much.
We also see that even though they despise each other, Shiwasu just brings such a comedic and interesting dynamic to the both of them where I never know who they'll react to each other next!
All the supporting characters are all really well developed and bring even more humor & heart to this story! From Hana's friends Hikaruko & Mizuki, her sister Yukari, Takane's grandfather, & one of Hana's classmates who seems to be like a more important character in future volumes!

Updated Review 9/21/22: Ahh this was just as good as the first time I read it! Been a hard few mental days and decided to start something that would make me laugh and this very much delivered!

I decided to pick this up after a friend saying how fun it was despite the age gap, and I agree! The mangaka mentions at the beginning to not take it too seriously and this is the first time in a while where I read a manga and laughed so much!
Hana and Takane are like the ultimate conversational rivals in that you really don't know who will get the last word in and win the "battle." Because of that, I just went along for the ride and took it in with all smiles. It truly was a fun story and LOVED the artwork! It's so funny and deeply enjoyable!
Overall, I am SUPER excited to read more of this! I saw the last volume isn't out yet so I'm debating if I should stop now and then binge read the series when it gets closer the final volume release. But man, it's so much fun I'm not ready to stop! I'm seriously planning to purchase the series though because this is a must have on my shelf!

Viz very conveniently left out the ages of the leads in this book..I mean, in what world is it okay for a 16 year old high schooler to be engaged or even be in a romantic relationship with a 26 year old working man??? It would have been so easy to age Hana up (she's a great character) but for some reason, the author just decided to make her 16. Oh, and it doesn't help that he constantly threatens her dad's job to make her go out with him. Not okay.

La dinamica tra i due protagonisti è il cuore del racconto: battibecchi continui, dialoghi brillanti e una specie di “enemies to lovers” che funziona a meraviglia. Mi sono divertita tantissimo a seguirli e ho divorato i volumi con un sorriso stampato in faccia.
Detto ciò, non posso non menzionare un aspetto che mi ha lasciata un po’ perplessa: la differenza d’età tra Hana (16 anni) e Takane (26). È un divario importante, soprattutto considerando l’età della protagonista, e personalmente l’ho trovato un po’ problematico. Tuttavia, la storia viene trattata in modo giocoso e non si spinge mai troppo oltre, restando sempre su toni leggeri e comici. Niente di scandaloso, nonostante, nuovamente, trovassi lui un po’ un pervertito per voler continuare a frequentare una ragazzina dieci anni più giovane.
Se si riesce a mettere da parte questo elemento e si legge con consapevolezza, Takane & Hana resta una lettura frizzante, romantica e davvero divertente. Consigliato a chi ama le commedie romantiche piene di carattere!

Après avoir vu et lu quelques bons avis sur ce manga, je me suis lancée à mon tour et je dois dire que je ne le regrette pas. Ce premier tome se lit très vite, j’ai vraiment accroché à l’histoire mais aussi à la personnalité de nos deux héros. Même si certaines scènes sont un peu invraisemblables, ma foi, je passe outre et je me laisse porter par la vague de romantisme qui flotte doucement sur Takane et Hana ! Il va sans dire que je vais lire la suite ! Ma scène préférée ? Celle où Takana accule Hana contre un mur et qu'elle lui réplique "Et ?"...J'ai adoré ! Elle a du caractère la petite !

Owned and read 13 volumes of it and I just HAD to get rid of it. The humor just isn't for me and it gets old quick. The age gap of 16-27 also bugs me a LOT. Not my type of manga. Feel free to ask if you want specifics as I have read 13 volumes of it I might be able to help.

My first and only manga read of 2020 was this lil' rom-com about a high-schooler who falls in love with a rich 26-year-old businessman. (Yep. Don't take it too seriously, otherwise it's... potentially creepy. *cough*)
To save face for her family, Hana stands in for her older sister at an arranged marriage meeting. And... well, she accidentally starts falling for the guy meant for her sister: the fussy, aloof Takane. What transpires is lots of banter, rivalry, and cute moments as their personalities and different worlds clash.
Rating it 5 stars because despite the "say what?!" aspect of the premise, it was presented in such a fun, fluffy way that I zoomed right through and plan to read the next one!

After a very unsuccessful meeting, Takane continues to want to see Hana, much to her dismay. Thus begins their unlikely relationship.
Takane and Hana is an extremely popular manga among the shoujo community, and something I’ve had my reservations about picking up due to the large age gap the two lead characters have. I was pleasantly surprised by how the age gap was handled throughout the story though, it's something Hana is very aware of and that she thinks about a lot, and Takane is surprisingly innocent. This to me reads a lot more like two people just hanging out and getting to know each other, with a focus more on comedy than anything else.Which at times has me wondering where this is going and what Takane's intentions are. I'm still not completely sold on this one though, but I hear it gets better as the volumes progress so I'll be continuing on for now. Also, those 4-koma bonus comics were easily the highlight of the volume for me.

The setup: Hana's older sister bails on an omiai (arranged marriage meeting) and her father calls her in as an emergency substitute. The meeting goes disastrously, but wealthy scion Takane is intrigued by the outspoken teen and decides to see her, keeping it secret from the family patriarch who is still looking for a good bride for him. Is he trolling Hana, or is he for real?
Goodness, where to start. There is so much that could go wrong with a setup where the hero is 26 and the heroine is 16. Author Shiwasu does well with this (to say the least) precarious pairing, keeping their interactions light and funny. They feel more evenly matched than their significant age difference would indicate, more like bantering siblings than boyfriend and girlfriend.
Hana's being 18 and Takane's being 23, for example, wouldn't have changed the scenario much if at all, and would have made it easier to stomach. Setting that aside, Shiwasu's sense of humor and art is pretty good. As long as things don't get too romantic, I can see myself enjoying this one for a while.

Oh, man--I really should have read the description more closely. There is waaaay too much ick going on in this thing for my comfort. I should have realized when the author starts with something like "just have fun with it" to be on my guard.
The age difference wouldn't bother me if Hana were older (my mom is 11 years younger than my dad, so...), but SHE'S 16!!! And he's 26 and keeps threatening to fire her dad if she doesn't get in the car with him. It's played off like, "oh, he's so childish, but it's just because he's rich and can't be himself around anyone else," but no. I don't accept that. He's a spoiled jerk and a creep and is 26 years old so he should freaking know better! I just can't. Approve. Of this relationship. At all.
I actually do really like Hana, but everyone else in this book is pretty much horrible.

Before purchasing this manga I didn’t realise it was a romance between a 16 year old girl and a 26 year old man. That makes me very uncomfortable.
I thought that maybe the plot and characters would make it a little enjoyable and while the plot was alright, it was still very uncomfortable.
I didn’t like how the father was fine with his daughter dating this man just to save his job and I didn’t like how the guy was chasing after a high school girl. I also didn’t like how the high school girl didn’t really realise how weird the relationship was and all her friends were glorifying it. I’m not sure if this is a normal thing in manga and Japanese culture but it’s a no from me.
The overall plot wasn’t rushed like other manga I’ve read but the age gap just made it uncomfortable and looking back I just don’t like it and I won’t be carrying on with the series.

Super cute! I’m really not into age gap romances all that much but this one was fun! I love the enemies to lover trope! I can’t wait to continue on in this series.
