Jacob Marston, Starlight, Iowa's hometown hero made a long-ago promise to the Lord: he won't kiss a woman until he knows she's "the one." Now at age twenty-eight, the rugged firefighter questions if it'll ever happen. Then, he meets his best friend's sister, and Jake believes he's found the woman of his dreams. But what will she think when she discovers his vow? When Julia makes an unexpected confession on Christmas Day, Jake shares his secret with her, and it looks as though happily-ever-after will make a holiday appearance. But somehow, everyone in the tiny town of Starlight learns Jake’s secret, and he's instantly transformed from town hero to laughingstock. Did Julia reveal his secret? Can Jake forget the humiliation and find his way under the mistletoe to share a forever kiss with Julia?
This was a cute story with Ms. Durgin's trademark humor. It's a quick read that highlights Christmas but is good for any time of the year. The romance was sweet, and I especially liked how the hero was keeping himself pure for the lady he intended to marry. This was an aspect to the story that I admired and the reason why I would recommend this book to high school students of both genders.
I took issue with a couple of things:
1. The lead man's background was a melting pot of things that didn't go together, which made him unbelievable as a person to me. In fifteen years of tutoring, I have never known a troublemaker who got suspended from high school who then went on to be the valedictorian of his graduating class. Typically, valedictorians avoid suspensions and keep their noses in books so they can make the highest possible grade among their classmates.
2. The prank that got the hero suspended in high school should have only resulted in detention, based on when he would have been in high school and the lack of suspensions during that particular era (the late 1990s or early 2000s). I was in public school during a portion of that time and tutored children from public school through the rest of it, and suspensions were not common then, nor were they handed out for practical jokes. Detention was the more common discipline for such nonsense.
3. After just meeting the hero, the heroine drops down to tie his shoes without him asking her to do so. I found this awkward and weird, as adults don't normally do this for each other. It was almost like she was trying to act like his mother, which made a romance between them seem far-fetched at that point.
That was the only time the heroine acted like that, so her character was a bit inconsistent, though I liked her much better once she quit acting like the guy's mom.
I would have liked the hero much better had it not been stated that he was the valedictorian. That seemed to be the outlier in his personality and background. It's much more likely that a former mischief maker would become a firefighter than would a valedictorian.
Overall, this book was a delight to read. I'm looking forward to rereading its sequel, which I accidentally read first a couple of years ago.
Meet me under the mistletoe. Such a sweet story. I normally read JoAnn's books as a reward to myself for keeping all the deadlines. This was no different but...besides that, everything that was going on and some books that I was reading ..i just felt really stressed and heavy hearted and I needed something positive and entertaining to cheer me up. Well this story totally did the trick and got me into the mood of countdown till Christmas. Of course you would think that it is a traditional -they bumped into each other under a mistletoe, kissed and couldn't live without each other anymore.. But no it's completely unconventional. Here you got a mountain of a hero that just cant put two words together without choking on his boot and make you love him for it. And a very smart and gold-hearted ...absolutelly engaged nurse.. And boom!!! I bet you haven't read a story this sweet and hilarious and touching and and and..i dont know a word for a story that just makes you jealous that you aren't there living with all the characters and enjoying all perks. I'm so starting on the sequel and so going to pretend I'm there.. Its a perfect book to get you into the mood for holidays and to remind you that straight and narrow doesnt mean boredom and sorrow. Thank you JoAnn first for writing this amazing book and again for the gift of it.
The characters stand out in Ms. Durgin's delightful novella!
Jake Marston knows what it's like to be burned when it comes to love, but he can't help but find himself drawn to the charming, and engaged, sister of his friend, Julia. How can Jake love the woman of his dreams when she appears to be engaged to another?
I absolutely LOVED this charming Christmas novella. That characters were well developed and that dialogue was just excellent! I loved how the conversations and teasing between the characters was warm and natural, pulling me into the tale.
All of the characters really popped out at me and even though the story was short the main and secondary characters were so well developed. I couldn't help but chuckle at Picasso and Caroline's fiery love/annoyance relationship :)
An utterly charming book from beginning to end. I don't want to give away too much in this review, so I definitely recommend that you check this one out!
I received this ebook from the author in return for an honest review. Thank you!
I loved this book. Was a nice happy story. It is always so easy to fall in love with the characters. JoAnn has a talent for doing that. This is a love story and all the things the couple went to to get together. Jake is such a down to earth man. Puts his belief in God and values for family at the top. Jake has fallen head over heels in love with a friends sister. But she is engaged. So he thinks, but he can't understand how she can be flirting with him and engaged. Julia has fallen for him. She falls because of the stands he takes for his beliefs. How are they ever gonna get together. Both of them are holding back. O and there is a ex-girlfriend comes into the picture. His friend Dylan as a son that's gets right in there to help them out. well no more telling this story you all need to get it and read it to see all that happens. I sure hope there is gonna be a book to follow it. I see a lot more story here. :)
Meet Me Under The Mistletoe is a delightful story about Jake and Julia. Jake is a firefighter and Julia is a nurse. Julia is Jake’s best friend’s sister. That is how they meet.
This story is not only about human love but God’s love. Through out the book we see God’s hand in so many situations. Jake isn’t only a one of a kind hero to everyone in the town of Starlight; he is also a man of God and a man of his promise to God. What is the promise Jake made to God? You will have to read the book to find out.
I promise that you will not only delight in this book, you will come away feeling good for having read it.
I wish to thank the author, JoAnn Durgin for her commitment to God. It not only shows in this book but in all her previous books. I have read all of Ms. Durgin’s books and I can’t wait for her next book to be published.
Life is throwing difficulties Jake Marsten’s way. Not only was the hero-firefighter recently injured on the job, but his former girlfriend shows up in town with a change of heart about their future together. Jake’s emotions are completely thrown for a loop when his best friend’s sister shows up. She is everything he wants in a woman—but he’s been told she belongs to another. This Christmas is becoming far too complicated for the popular public servant. Just who will capture Jake’s heart (and kiss) under the mistletoe?
I absolutely loved this endearing romance story! Author JoAnn Durgin always provides snappy dialogue, fun characters, and a story that moves you from one page to the next so you can find out what happens. A FUN Christmas novella that should be on everyone’s Christmas wish list!
Who would not want to kiss an adorable firefighter who also repairs toys to give them to needy children? and if there's mistletoe, who can resist? Julia and Jake have a rocky road as she is already engaged and he won't kiss a girl until he is sure she's the "one" for him. This book just made me feel good. It is a sweet romance and definitely make me recall my own moments of falling in love. Starlight sounds like a delightful town to live in and the town just has a "family feel" to it. Read this sweet book to find out if Jake and Julia find love and get a kiss underneath the mistletoe. 5 Stars I won a copy of this book from the author in a holiday giveaway. It is my pleasure to review it.
I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I'm sorry but I really didn't like this one. Aside from the plot being boring, I couldn't relate the the characters. So a guy can't figure out his relationship so he buys himself a dog and then realizes that he probably bit off more than he could chew. PIus, I didn't feel much for the main couple as they had little chemistry together. I felt the plot moving too slowly to be interesting. Like I was waiting for something to happen that never did or came far too late in the story for me.
If you like short stories than you may want to give this one a try. It's appropriate for all ages and contains no swearing, sexual content, or violence.
Jake Marston is taking time off from fire fighting after falling through a burning flight of stairs. But while he’s healing from aches and pains, he spends his time fixing abandoned and broken toys so they can be donated and given to children at Christmas. One day, a fire-fighting friend shows up at the door, determined to get Jake out of the house to help with a community event. But Sgt. Dylan Sinclair isn’t alone—he’s brought his sister, Julia, to help.
It’s been a year since Jake’s girlfriend, Nicole, left him and the town for bigger and better things—and it’s taken awhile for Jake to get over her. But when Julia walks in the door, he’s drawn to the pediatric nurse—only to find out that she’s engaged to be married.
Julia is immediately attracted to the handsome fireman who lives in the house his grandfather built. Her heartstrings are strummed even more as they spend time together volunteering in the community during the days leading up to Christmas. She knows that if she’s going to have any chance with him, she must share a secret she’s been keeping from her family. Only, things get more complicated when Nicole shows up and wants Jake back.
I’ve read and enjoyed several other books by this author, but this one is my favorite. Jake is the perfect hero. He’s handsome, heroic, giving, great with children, loved and respected in the community, a fix-it kind of guy, and he honors commitments. Julia and Jake have similar hearts for people; they make a great team.
Their story had me hooked from the first page, and I finished the book in one afternoon. These are some of the yummy lines written: “Honey, if I was you, I’d snap this man up in a heartbeat, for no reason other than he can fix anything. That and the fact he could melt the chocolate in your s’mores.” I love that!
Around the holidays, I tend to overdose on Hallmark Christmas movies, so I’ve watched my fair share over the years. As I read this story, it played out like a Hallmark movie for me. Not the over-the-top sappy films that make you nauseous. But those that have heart and make you feel good and hopeful—just like how you want to feel during the holiday season.
If you enjoy reading Christmas novellas, I highly recommend picking up "Meet Me Under the Mistletoe."
A Delightful Blend of Romance & Humor! Captain Jake Marston was injured in the line of duty in his role as a fiirefighter for his beloved hometown of Starlight, Iowa. As a teenager Jake had made a secret promise to God, a promise that he intends to keep. It's been a year since his former girlfriend left town, and Jake's friends think it's time he moves forward. Fellow firefighter and friend, Dylan Sinclair pays Jake a visit with his gorgeous younger sister, Julia, in tow. Julia works as a pediatric nurse in Cedar Rapids and has a secret of her own. Dylan persuades Jake to attend the town's annual Christmas party, giving tours of one of the firetrucks, and passing out gifts to the local underprivileged children, an activity Jake loves. During the party Jake can't take his eyes off Julia, and begins to think that he has found the woman of his dreams. As Jake and Julia are thrown into numerous situations together the attraction between them escalates. Both Jake and Julia are strong in their faith, and look to God for direction in their most unusual predicaments.
JoAnn Durgin writes with a strong Christian conviction and beautifully descriptive elements as well as charming characters. This lovely Christmas novella is filled with romance and humor! The characters are strong and are protrayed with all the human characteristics of lovable, delightful and godly personalities. Numerous emotions surface as the story unfolds. I found myself smiling, laughing, and cheering for these sweet characters throughout this unpredictable and fun-filled story. Jake's bumbling habits are charming, and Julia's sweet personality is captivating. I thoroughly enjoyed this entertaining Christmas novella, and will most likely read it every year when Christmas approaches!
Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest review. All expressed opinions are my own.
I liked this sweet fun Christmasy short story. However.....
It was a bit too sugary, too corny, too idyllic, and too contrived. Every single day seemed filled with multiple, perfect charity/volunteer projects. My eyes were rolling as I read; it was just too much, too over-the-top and kind of turns you off to the real message after awhile. Considering the sheer volume of all this philanthropy, I never felt the "realness" or grittiness of their interactions with the people they were helping; it was as if they were doing good deeds while insulated in their perfect Christian bubble. Somehow it all seemed to me as both realistic and unrealistic at the same time (is that even possible??). ......... and yet, I truly liked this sweet comfortable story. {Amazingly enough a large group of Christmas carolers came strolling through my neighborhood as I sat reading this book!! The too perfect real life Christmas touch to mirror the too perfect fictional story!}
I loved all the fun characters, and the perfectly hunky "man-of-God" firefighting Hero and the beautiful perfect heroine. I felt the characters were genuine in their faith and it came through as a natural part of who they were and how they lived their everyday lives. As a follower of Christ, I did not feel as if the author was "preaching" at us; but to a reader who is not a Christian, perhaps it would be too much or too overwhelming??
So if you can set aside the fact that it's all just "too perfect", than you can enjoy this story as a really sweet small-town Christmas love story. I look forward to reading more sugar sweet stories by this author.
f you are looking for a book that will offer you a few hours escape from the busyness of the holiday season - look no further. "Meet Me Under the Mistletoe," JoAnn Durgin's first novella, will give you that respite. Just under 150 pages long, it is the perfect book to read in front of a fireplace with a cup of tea or hot chocolate on a long, cold afternoon.
As in her previous books, The Lewis Legacy Series, the characters in this book immediately find a place in your heart. Most women will identify with Julia and most will fall a teeny bit in love with Jake. After all, what's not to love about him? Be still my heart!
I won't give away the plot because you should read this book for yourself. I will say that the story is captivating, full of sweet romance and Christian values. For those of us who may be a little jaded from reading so many love stories, "Meet Me Under the Mistletoe" will renew your enjoyment of reading romantic novels. After all, no one can write romance like the "Queen of Romance," JoAnn Durgin.
I received a complimentary copy of this book for the sole purpose of writing a review. My review is my sole opinion, I was not influenced by the author, editor or publisher, nor did I receive any compensation for the review.
The title "Queen of Romance" is one that I alone gave Ms. Durgin. But I think it fits, don't you?
Meet Me Under the Mistletoe I not ashamed to admit it—I love a sweet but pure romance. I say pure, because Meet Me Under the Mistletoe is about two Christian people who are both intent on acting like committed Christians. And there is no one who can write that better than JoAnne Durgin.
I say sweet romance, because from page one of this book you really want to see the two main characters together. You want to see them kiss under the mistletoe.
I give this book 5 stars because it fills its particular category perfectly. No murder or mayhem, but a page-turner because JoAnne Durgin has a way with getting into the heads of these two really nice people, Jake and Julia. Jake is a hero firefighter, and Julia is a nurse. You feel the tugs on their heartstrings, as well as the Christian Spirit that just flows from both of them.
The background characters are also hilarious. This author is a genius in populating her novels with characters you just want to hug and laugh with, everything from funny toddlers to wise-cracking cafe owners in small-town USA.
If you like to sit down on one snowy afternoon, to be swept away with a sweet romance that has a strong spiritual thread, then I highly recommend this book.
I found this novella to be one of the most God honoring works of fiction I have read. Growing up, we often intend for our lives to honor God, but when life plays out, living it can be so much more difficult than we ever imagined. Jake made a promise to God as a teenager, but will he be able to keep that vow? Julia’s presence makes his promise even harder to keep. The encounters between the characters are filled with sensitive passion that draws you into an emotional turmoil that is so real—real to our emotions, real to our minds, and real to our hearts. But what if that heart is truly surrendered to a vow made to God? How will that heart react? I found this story to be such an exemplary display of the Holy Spirit inside us, directing each and every step. JoAnn Durgin does an awesome job of writing an emotional romance while keeping the story clean and enjoyable. The characters are well developed, facing real-to-life struggles, making them likeable and real. This was a book that I could not lay down until the final page had been turned.
Oh, goodness, another hunky firefighter. Do we ever get enough of them? Well...NO! Especially when said firefighter is a man that puts God first, and lives out the faith he professes by remaining true to a vow he made as a teenager. I just wanted to swoon.
Meet Me Under the Mistletoe didn't take me long to read because I just couldn't put it down, and I don't think you'll be able to either.
Yeah, I know it's after Christmas and I should be done with the Christmas books, but I love them all year round. Maybe it's because most people, even in books, tend to love each other more, give of themselves more, and do random acts of kindness. And all of that is included in this story.
***Complimentary copy provided for review. The above is my honest opinion.***
I really enjoyed this Christmas novella and all the fun activities in the book put one in the mood for a Merry Christmas, but more than that, the book shares in a very warm and heartfelt way, the real reason for Christmas. It also shares a sweet love story, which involves past promises, humor and confusion, but oh, so sweet the dance between a God-loving hero and heroine.
JoAnn Durgin knows how to write romance, romance with always an honorably-done edge. Her heroes are among my favorites. You get more than your money’s worth and certainly no disappointment with this well written novella.
This story reminded me of a Hallmark movie. It was sweet. I liked the main characters. Throw in one of them being a fireman plus several interrupted confessions and I enjoyed this quick holiday read.
3 1/2 stars
I received this book in a giveaway. I was not required to give a positive review. All of the opinions I express here are my own.
What an absolutely refreshing story about faith, family, love and remaining committed to your morals and principles. Jake Marston is attracted to Julie, his best friend's sister, but she is engaged to another man. Jake's Christian beliefs will not allow him to pursue a woman promised to someone else even if the whole town ridicules him for it. If Jake and Julie will just sit down and communicate with each other, they might discover that things are not as complicated as they seem!
JoAnn Durgin is a new author for me - I found this to be a very sweet, loving story and very inspirational. I look forward to reading many more of her books!
Do you believe in love at first sight? Author JoAnn Durgin does, and her stories are convincing me. In this sweet Christmas novella, Jake is a wonderful hero, a firefighter who loves his family ties and hometown. His awkwardness around women made me smile and fall in love with him a little. When he sees Julia for the first time in many years, the pull is irresistible – until Jake finds out that Julia is already engaged. Faith plays a big part of this story, both in the lives of the hero and heroine, but also in how the fine folks of Starlight, Iowa, interact and care for one another. This story does not preach, but it shows beautifully how faith in God leads to hearts opening. In this case, two hearts in particular. I loved this story and look forward to reading the rest of this three-part series. The characters are realistic and likable, and the bits of humor sprinkled into the story make it a joy to read. Meet Me Under The Mistletoe earns five stars.
Jake is a firefighter who was injured on the job. Julia is a Pediatric Nurse visiting her brother Dylan and his wife Hannah for Christmas in Starlight, Iowa. Can love brew for two people who help children....his through repairing toys and her's through physical healing? Jake made a promise to God years ago and Julia challenges him to keep that promise! When an ex-girlfriend shows up in town, things get interesting. And then there's Julias fiance who she doesn't talk much about. Add a cast of side characters that will make this story complete! What will be the outcome of it all?
This is a warm-hearted story with faith filled characters you can't help but fall in love with. Set in a fictional Iowa town, JoAnn paints a picture of a quaint town full of characters who will charm you and make you fall in love with them! I can't wait to read the rest of her Christmas Holiday Extravaganza novellas!
A cute read with quirky characters and a firefighter that instantly won my heart over! The story has a slightly slow start, but quickly fills up with touching moments and clean chemistry. My favorite part of this one were the kids and how the main characters are diligent in their walk with Christ. They don’t just “play” church and claim to have faith, they make it known in their everyday lives what God means to them and that obeying Him is more important than their own desires. There are also a few misunderstandings that need to be dealt with in the plot, but they are revealed at the right time and forgiveness also becomes part of the story. This book has heart, faith, family, some cute flirting, and two characters with noble careers which they entrust to God’s hands. As funny as some parts of the story were, there was also depth and understanding that balanced everything out.
I am usually not a fan of holiday themed books, but this series is fast becoming an exception... It is set during Christmas season but contains moral lessons and values that apply year round. In a world of books and movies about immorality, this was a refreshing take on courtship and romance exactly as God intended it to be. As always, very well developed characters who draw you in to their quirks, antics, trials, and celebrations. This would be a book for my oldest daughter to read to see how a man is supposed to honor and cherish her. I can't wait to read the next one in the series because I'm sure I'll get to visit these delightful characters again.
Julia is tired of the constant matchmaking. So when she comes to Starlight to see her brother she hopes that her fiance will keep the match makers away. But she doesn't expect to fall for the town's local hero. Jacob knows that he shouldn't pay attention to Julia. She's already spoken for. But he can't get her off his mind.
A sweet Christmas novella that tells a story of family and acceptance. The story seemed a bit rushed, probably because it was so short. But it was clean, romantic, and sweet. I look forward to reading a full length novel by this author.
I LOVED this story. It's a sweet, short read with a storyline that drew me right in and held my attention from start to finish. Jake is so endearing and believable as a hero. Sigh-worthy character for certain. The fact he puts his foot in his mouth on a regular basis is hilarious. Julia is so sweet. The kind of woman I love to have as a friend.
And I'm still laughing over the reindeer.
Another winner from Mrs. Durgin that'll stay in my library to read again.
I really enjoyed this novella. It was fun getting to know the characters and following their road to romance. It is also a wonderful story sharing how God can work in everyday lives to fulfill the desires of the heart for those that remain steadfast in their trust in Him. I definitely recommend this to any one who enjoys a good Christian romance with wonderful characters and a delightful story line.
Jake and Julia's story is absolutely fantastic. Both are strong characters and Christian. JoAnn's writing always makes me feel as though I am right there as part of the story. Love reading about Jake and Julia's lives before they met and then how they handle meeting and the growth of their relationship. Kissing??? What about kissing??? You must read this story and find out. I whole heartedly and highly recommend this story. JoAnn's stories always make me feel good.
I'd like to live in a town like Starlight! I'm a small town girl and this book felt like a cross between my hometown and Mayberry. Jake is one great guy: firefighter, traditional, inexperienced dog-lover. Nurse Julia may be tired of her well-meaning brother and sister-in-law fixing her up with the wrong kinds of guys but that doesn't mean she isn't ready for the right guy to come along! I look forward to reading what happens next in Starlight.
Jake and Julia's story is a beautiful story. Jake is a remarkable man. The whole town loves him because of all the time he spends helping others. When he meets Julia he knows she is the one he wants for a wife. You can see God working throughout this book. I had the honor to review this book for the author.
