Heidi Skarie's life as a writer began when she had a dramatic dream about a futuristic world at war. The vivid dream was like watching an action/adventure movie. Excited about the dream, she recorded it upon awakening. That night the dream continued where it left off. After six nights, Heidi had a hundred-page journal recording the series of dreams. This awakened her interest in writing, which continues to be one of her greatest passions today. Heidi writes adventurous tales of well-developed characters in this world and imaginary futuristic ones.

Heidi Skarie's recent book entitled Star Rider on the Razor's Edge is based on the dream.

Here is a blurb on Star Rider on the Razor's Edge.

“A stellar blend of action, romance and intrigue. Heidi Skarie's novel is a heartfelt example of the new, emotionally-intense direction that science fiction is heading. I can't wait for Toemeka's next adventure."
--Sujata Massey, author of The Kizuna Coast

Red Willow's Quest (her first published book) tells the story of a young Shoshoni maiden who undertakes a dangerous quest to become a medicine woman. This book's extensive research effectively brings to life the Native American people of the 1800s.

Another brilliant novel by Heidi Skarie. Being a big fan of her work, I was so excited to finally read her latest novel and once again lose myself in the beautiful stories she creates with the ever-present mystical atmosphere and spiritual wisdom.

Annoure and the Dragon Ships is set in 8th century England and Norway and tells a story of a young noble girl called Annoure who is kidnapped by the Vikings to become a slave. However, her strong, brave spirit wins the heart of Thorstein, the man who captured her. The two grow closer with time and Annoure’s strong-willed nature begins to show. She desires to not be just his bed thrall (bed slave) and eventually wins herself a good position in his village. Also, Annoure goes on a spiritual journey and is trained to become a druidess.

I can’t praise this novel enough. I adored Annoure, particularly her bravery and stubbornness and the incredible inner strength her soul possesses. She goes through so much suffering yet keeps fighting for her life, mission and love. In many ways her character reminded me of Red Willow, a heroine from Heidi Skarie’s debut novel, but as I heard that the author finds inspiration in her past lives, I suppose it makes perfect sense.

What I loved about Annoure’s relationship with Thorstein was how connected they were - true twin flames. Also, the way the author describes the scenes is so vivid that I felt like watching a movie while reading it. In fact, I think this could make a great historical/visionary romance film one day.

Overall, it was an atmospheric, sensitive story with loveable characters that grow on you. I loved delving into the world of the ancient times. It felt very real and it was a pleasure to undergo such a journey with Skarie's spirit.

An interesting read

I read this book as I am interested in the Viking era. A lot of research evidently went into this book plus some good character development and there was some clever mysticism interwoven in an interesting way. I thought the comparison of religious ideologies and cultures was integrated well and there was a clever twist at the end. However, the book lacked intrigue and tension for me.

Annoure is a strong-willed young woman, who knows what she can do when she wants something, even going to the forbidden forest with old oak, a tree used as a place of ceremonies for druids. Even her brother urge her to get away from here. He thought the place to be hunted and evil. But yet it made her to desire to visit it again even more. She was challenged and she wanted to come there back again. And one morning she get away for her guardian and sneaked into the forest, only to find herself dreaming again under the main old oak about a blue-eyed druid whom she knew will be her friend. A warning came from her another vision about Dragon boats… to be beware of them.

Annoure led the horse back, when she spotted five ships coming to the shore. She was puzzled, because it was too early for the trade hour. She was watching the ships to pass by, when the arrow came flying toward her. She ducked in time, yet she realized they were invaders coming to raid her town. She galloped as fast as she could to warn her people, but time wasn’t her helper.

Her life was turned upside-down when the Norsemen came in attacking and putting all to flames. Her free life came to ashes, when she was captured and forced to be moved to another culture and civilizations of Norsemen.

Nobody could take away her freedom, or so Annoure thought when a man from her dreams came to steal her heart away.

A lovely historical book full of surprises, danger, duels, compassion, heroism and a compulsive woman who only knows to follow her heart.

Draws you into the story from the first page

This book starts with action and kept my interest throughout. Descriptions of surroundings were just enough to feel I was there. I say that because I've come across many books by both new and well known authors that set the scene in a bit too much boring detail. I actually read the whole book without skimming which is unusual for me. I enjoyed a fairly realistic look into the past although I did find it uncomfortable and it made me think about how difficult women's lives have been throughout history.

I've always had a keen interest in Vikings and Scandinavian culture, so this book easily grabbed my attention upon reading the description. It's definitely a period of time which interests me and the author did it justice with the great descriptions and a real sense of atmosphere and being there. But I think if this story was set in any era it would succeed, partly due to the strong, courageous central character of Annoure who never gives up. It's a touching story as well as a exciting adventure. Great read!
