First Responders are despatched by the local Ambulance Services to life threatening incidents. First on Scene is an overview and guide for First Responders and those wishing to become a local first responder. We use the term ‘First Responder’ as a generic term for The First Person on the Scene. A First Responder can be a CFR (Community First Responder), a trained and qualified volunteer, despatched by the Ambulance Service and respond to 999 calls where there is a life threatening incident. They may be members of St. John, Red Cross or other related organisations such as LIVES. A Co First Responder may be a police officer, firefighter or military personnel who also volunteer to respond for the Ambulance Service. A security officer and indeed an appointed person can be the first responder to the incident. A Staff Responder may be ambulance personnel who has also volunteered to respond when off duty.Generally, a 999 call will come in from a member of the public requesting an ambulance. The emergency operator will triage the call and prioritise it. If it is deemed life threatening, perhaps a heart attack, stroke or non-breathing patient, the operator will dispatch the First Responder at the same time as despatching the crew. When a First Responder is despatched by 999 to attend life threatening calls that response can make the difference between life and death.
