Ryan Kinkaid and his husband, Timothy York, witness a crime that others are quick to write off as an accident. Not surprisingly, Ryan can’t dismiss it so easily, even though the victim is someone he despises.
In this fifth Ryan Kinkaid adventure, summer has come again. Ryan is trying to stop thinking about the events of last spring and a diversion arrives when Lavinia Walsh-Preston, the older sister of Nicholas Walsh, comes back into his life – albeit briefly. With Ty’s help, they work together to discover the identity of the person who killed the cold-hearted woman by pushing her down a flight of stairs, with their only clue being the male voice they had previously heard speaking with her. Working under the radar at first, their pursuit quickly takes a new direction as the hunters become the prey.
Meredith and Lauren, Jason and Eric — even Brownie — are all here again, enhancing this tale.
This is the fifth book in the Ryan Kinkaid mystery series and I would recommend that you read them in order. I originally picked up Summer Spirit - book 1 in the series - because I love the idea of big, old houses, New Hampshire, mysteries, ghosts and a love story. I wanted a book which I could sit back and enjoy, immersing myself in a slightly spooky atmosphere and a story which was well written and kept me interested. Summer Spirit did it for me and the following books continued with this tradition. I have enjoyed each and every book in the series. Book one also sets the scene and introduces the main characters who all make an appearance in each book. Books 2-4 continue the story of Ryan, Timothy and their friends and introduces new mysteries. In book 4 we are also introduced to an unseen voice which is the focus of book 5. In this book we are revisited by Lavinia Walsh-Preston, a not-so-nice character from book 1. She's not around for long but her presence is felt throughout the story and who could believe that such an uptight, unforgiving and nasty person could harbor such secrets. Following me so far? In book 5 as well, Ryan and Timothy are now happily married and relationships are developing for Lauren, Jason and Eric. I don't know if they will get their happily-ever-afters but we can hope. An Unwanted Request also contains some very erotic sex scenes which cement Ryan and Timothy's relationship. The scenes are well written and I don't think that I can ever look at an armless rocking chair in the same way again. The main thing for me in the book was the threat posed by the unseen voice. It really was menacing. You did a good job here, Mr Jay. My only complaint - I wanted more. I read the story over the period of a day and I would have liked it to be longer. I hope that we will see more of this series as there are still stories tell, I'm sure.
