Ashley A Novel by Dean Koontz | Summary & Analysis
Lauren Groff’s novel is an examination of love and marriage between two people constantly struggling with their own self-worth after enduring broken childhoods that have scarred too deeply to ignore. It is touching, agonizing, riveting, and therapeutic all at once, an emotional roller coaster that forces the reader outside their comfort zone and into a place of naked truth. Groff’s deep-rooted understanding of the fine workings of marriage is shockingly accurate as she portrays the daily ins and outs of the love/hate relationship that only those with a spouse can truly appreciate. Her writing is smart, seductive, and edgy, keeping the reader engaged from beginning to end.
Lancelot “Lotto” Satterwhite is a passionate man with a love for both the theatrics of the stage and the beauty of women. His endless charm serves as a sexual magnetism to all who are around him and his roving eye appears as though it will never cease. Until the moment he spies Mathilde Yoder from across the room and suddenly, his whole world changes in the span of a second. Just a few short weeks later, Lotto and Mathilde are married, both blissfully in love and optimistically dreaming of the happy years ahead. None of their friends think their marriage will make it, but their love is unlike any other. As the years go by, they weather the storms all relationships are challenged with, pulling apart only to be drawn back together by a force stronger than any hardship they face.

There are the slightest tidbits of brief, tantalizing, and superficial analysis at the end, but this is mainly a workmanlike timeline and recounting of the book, chapter-by-chapter. And that was actually a great, valuable service for me, because with the constant flash-forwards and flash-backs which are the novel's calling card, actual happenings are sometimes hard to distinguish from constructions of memory...
one of my favorite books of 2015! totally compelling characters, gorgeous prose. glimpses into the theatre life. a little mother/son drama and psychopath action and this book was a delicous vacation treat. loved it!
I wanted to love this because I loved "Arcadia." Unfortunately, this one felt really pretentious to me, as though the author just wanted to show off her knowledge. It was a bummer.
The Furies section was more interesting to me, I supposed mainly because the woman felt less "tamed," but overall, I was unsatisfied by this book as a whole.
I chose this book because it was on the Goodreads Awards list, but only finished half the book. I just really didn't enjoy the writing style and didn't care about the characters.
Really interesting journey with this one. Like life, sometimes easy and fun and sometimes painful and difficult. I didn't know what I was getting into - glad I read it.
