A kingdom ruined by greed and vanity. The royal family, dethroned by an evil witch and cursed to forget their lives, are tossed into another world. The only thing that will save the fairy-tale realm is a rogue king, an old book, and a crimson cloak. Elysse Grimm is the last fairy-tale guardian and high queen of Ever After, but she has no memory of it. Only true love's kiss can help her remember.
H. L. is a lover of almost all things written. She grew up never knowing that she wanted to be a writer. It came about one rainy afternoon while she was home with her twin boys. Bored while the kids she picked up her laptop and set about writing her first manuscript. Five years later Rebel Ink took their chances with the crazy sports girl from the steel city.
Her stories tend to write themselves. She never knows just where they're going or what's going to happen. On more than one occasion the characters have surprised even H. L. There are times though when she has to tell the crazy personalities that form on her laptop to chill out, but she has fun with them.
The Crimson Cloak has the potential to be a great series. I enjoyed the plot and idea of the overall story, but it got lost in translation.
The Crimson Cloak is the story of Elyse Grimm, the last Grimm, from the kingdom of Ever After. She is the last protector of her world, but she and her mother have been sent to our world and stripped of their memories. Enter the wicked witch and her pack of wolves.
As stated above, I was intrigued by the idea and was really interested in reading this book. Unfortunately it needs to go through an editing process and needs to be flushed out a bit. The story is a bit disjointed and the characters are one dimensional. The main character is thrown into this life altering situation, but we don't really get to know her before hand. Her reactions are unrealistic.
Also there are some continuity issues. The lead male in the story introduces himself to Elyse as James Hunter. Then when he enters his name into her phone his name is James Guy. I don't know if this was a slip up of the author leading into his role in the story or done purposely for the story. Either way, it is a bit of a spoiler.
Also Elyse's relationships are not well developed. She has a best friend that she avoids like the plague, and a mother who is an introvert.
I would possibly read the second book in this series - hoping like with most things that this story will get better with time.
I would recommend this book to people who didn't mind the grammatical errors of Fifty Shades of Grey; and to people who like the TV shows Once Upon a Time and Grimm.
