Helen looked over her shoulder as she walked through the trail in the woods. She had been hearing some pretty strange things about this area, but she had chosen to ignore it because it was her favorite place to do her running. Nothing had ever happened there before, and she thought that most of the people are saying had been made up for attention or out of boredom. She didn’t know what else to think, because everything that people were saying was just too strange.
Andy dared over the lake, wishing that his life would finally start to make sense. He didn’t understand why he had to hide who he was from so many people, and the stress from it was very difficult for him to handle. He wanted nothing more than to just be open and honest with somebody about his life, but the only people that he could talk to were his family, because they knew exactly what was happening to him.
Clementine Lorrie watched the train go by. It was a hot summer day in Texas, and all she could think to do was hope that something would happen to take her mind off her boredom. The most exciting thing she could think of did not involve cows or the farm back at her father's house. No indeed. What she had in mind was the intriguing life of the boxcar jumpers and the people who were always running about scaring the bejeezus out of unassuming good Christian folk like her father.
Brandi sighed. It was yet another day in this stupid town and another day in her boring life. As the daughter of a ranch owner, she didn’t have much to do. She was supposed to be a dainty woman, a woman who was supposed to cater to her future husband and do domestic duties, which included raising the kids. She didn’t want children, rather she thought of them as a bore. She would rather eat dirt than participate in that sort of thing, so she was definitely looking for a new way to get out of this. That’s why she was here, at the saloon and trying to figure out something new to do.
The leaves were blowing gently in the wind as Mila walked slowly toward home from the village. Papa had been waiting for a long time for news of what was happening with the war, and she was finally blessed with just what he had been wanting to know about. Although she knew his face would fall when he heard such news. The Germans were taking over everything, and even their own village might soon feel the wrath before they knew it.
Nina Simmons wandered absently around the grocery store, looking at all the food that was stacked up on the rows and rows of shelves. It seemed disconcerting that food should be so easy for her to access while in different parts of the world, food was scarce and people were starving. She sighed in dismay and walked outside to discover herself short of breath and panicked by the thought of other people in so much misery. She knelt over, holding onto her knees, and looked over at the ice cream shop across the street.
