This is the third book in the Mercers of Montana Series, but in reality, time-wise, it would take place before book two. If you have not read any of this series, it will read well as a standalone too. The plot of this story has so many elements, mysteries, twists and turns, shocking family secrets, and a hidden romance. Where did her Joseph Mercer go and why did he leave his family? Why was Maria sent away to finishing school in London suddenly and never allowed home to visit until now? What is this about a betrothal since birth to Victor Dannon? All Maria wants is to come home to stay in Virginia City and be back at the ranch and with family. When another shocking announcement is made, will Maria just duly follow as her mother wishes, or will she make her own path in life?
Maria Mercers four years in a London finishing school has her as a poised lady, but not as a happy person. Coming home for a visit, she has a mother that is cold and distant and refuses to call her by her name, she now has two sister-in-laws and a nephew now and so much has changed in Virginia City. There is still chemistry between Maria and Victor, but what will happen to them with her mother planning out her life and sending her back to London to marry a Baron? Disclosure: I was provided an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts, opinions, and ratings are my own.
The love story of Marie and Victor. Marie was sent away to a fine English finishing school for young lady for wealthy families because of something that had one night between her parents. It's Christmas time in Virginia City, she has come home and her mother tell her she is to marry a baron and return to England forever. When Victor was born his parents and Marie's parent betroth them. Will Marie find forgiveness and marry for love? Great story.

Maria was sent overseas to finishing school suddenly and had no contact with them for years. She is finally called back home to a town that has changed and a mother that is distant and cold. Maria's father left just before her mother sent her away, her siblings have married, and her mother announces she is engaged to a baron. All she wanted was to return home to Montana and reconcile with her mother. Victor has been eagerly awaiting Maria's return, as they were betrothed when Maria was born. He must figure out why her mother wants Maria gone again to keep her for himself.
An interesting read. Maria's mother has been running the ranch since her husband mysteriously disappeared and not returned years ago. Maria's siblings have helped run the ranch with some hired hands but her mother is even unable to say Maria's name and she blames herself. Maria is no longer the spit fire everyone remembers as she keeps up her taught, polished facade. She must decide for herself if she will allow her mother to continue to rule her life or go after what she wants.
