Angelique is such a wonderful character! I read this book in 2 days - just like the first book. It's impossible to put these books down. The Golon's know how to reel in the reader and keep them entranced. I finished this one minute and immediately picked up book 3 the next. I have to say this. Again as I did in my review for book one: what the heck is up with the covers of these books!? So strange. Seriously well written, well researched, excellent historical fiction novels dressed in the cover of a 60's romance novel. These aren't cheesy romance novels. These are intensely well written, well conceived, and beautifully rendered pieces of literature. Who came up with such ridiculous covers? It's really so odd... All the reviews say the same thing. I highly recommend this book and I'm so glad I stumbled across it. The books are out of print so you have to buy them from used book sellers, but it's sooo worth the search!! (maybe a library would have a copy too??). I bought mine on Amazon and it was very inexpensive. Angelique and the series is often compared to Forever Amber. I read the latter and thought it was a great book, but Angelique is so much better!! Angelique is completely and utterly different from Amber as female character. It's apples and oranges. Forever Amber is. Good book, but Angelique is by far the more exceptional novel.

Drugi dio historijske sage o markizi od anđela u punom svom sjaju predstavlja još bolje razrađenu lepezu dobro poznatih likova. Čitalac će tako bolje upoznati likove kojima je autorica u prvom dijelu posvetila samo nekoliko redaka, prelazeći žurno preko njih kao što plemićka kočija prolazi kroz tamnu bulonjsku šumu.
Sama Anđelika se već u početku nalazi u sred groblja Sen Inosen u društvu kojim se jedna markiza ne može hvaliti na sav glas. Naime, tamo gdje kepeci, prostitutke, kradljivci i šepavci brane svoje džeparenjem steknuto carstvo, nema ni traga moći koju je nekada uživao Veliki šepavac iz Langdoka skupa sa svojom suprugom Anđelikom od Pejraka, čije ime je zahvaljujući Luju XIV palo u zaborav.
Anđelika ima dvije opcije – umrijeti na groblju ili postati omiljenom priležnicom Kalembredena, jednog od najmoćnijih ljudi pariskog podzemlja poznatog pod nazivom Dvor čuda.
Zaklevši se samoj sebi da joj djeca neće dugo znati za bijedu, Anđelika će u ovoj grdosiji unakaženog lica vidjeti odskočnu dasku za mnoge svoje planove.
Jednom kada Kalembreden skine svoju masku čudovišta, na snagu stupa autoričina sposobnost vladanja vlastitom pričom i stavljanja u prvi plan onih likova koje smo davno ostavili iza sebe.
Ova knjiga je znatno nabijenija strašću od prethodne jer sama Anđelika ne gubi svijest o vlastitoj privlačnosti. Čak i onda kada sva u dronjcima mili kroz najozloglašenije četvrti Pariza, brojni muškarci postaju žrtvom njenih zelenih očiju. U srcu ipak ostaje samo Žofrej od Pejraka.
Autorica svjesno u svaki novi tom ubacuje i novo okruženje koje će vas kao ruho Anđelikino uvijek iznova opčiniti. Ovaj roman će mi uvijek važiti za jedan od najdražih o Parizu, tačnije upravo ovaj njegov dio.
Da, o Parizu svi znamo ponešto. Ali koliko ste samo puta poželjeli upoznati grad iz građanske, ovdje čak većinom i dekadentne perspektive. Prisustvovao sam prosjačkim obračunima, otkupljivanjem dojenčadi, otužnoj unutrašnjosti zavučenih pečenjara, dijeljenju pamfleta na trgu Sen Žermen, zabranjenih od strane Njegovog Veličanstva.
Sam dvor i u ovom dijelu igra neizostavnu ulogu. Nikada ne potcjenjujte cvjećarke, kepece i gostioničare, jer svako od njih zna baš ono što bi velikodostojnici voljeli da sakriju čak i od samog kralja.
Lijepa gospođa od Morena oduševit će sve slojeve pariskog društva zahvaljujući svom dućanu Španjolska patuljčica, u kome smjelo prodaje napitak koji čak i kraljica križom ispija – čokoladu.
Da li će poznanstvo sa lijepim i naizgled besosjećajnim markizom od Plesi – Belijera gospođu od Morena stajati teško stečenog bogatstva, ili će drugi susret Anđelike i kralja Luja XIV u Versaju kobno završiti za Anđeliku od Sansea, markizu od anđela?

What should I say about this book?
1- the translation is terrible, the translator could have add some notes in some terminology used at that time. He didn't bother in doing that;
2- in my opinion, there are better roman historiques than this one even if I haven't read the whole series.
3- for those readers interested in reading good books of this genre, I do recommend authors like Juliette Benzoni, Michel Zévaco with his fabulous series Les Pardaillan series and Mireille Calmel.

Même si je n’ai pas été aussi emballée que pour le premier tome, ça reste une bonne lecture ! Mon principal problème s’est concentré sur les premiers 30-40%, parce que je n’y prenais aucun plaisir. J’étais dans une posture d’attente, je voulais passer à autre chose. En plus c’est une partie avec des TW donc bon… j’avais hâte de changer d’ambiance, de retrouver la force du personnage d’Angelique. Et puis la fin de la première partie est arrivée et j’ai repris espoir pour la suite.
Dans la deuxième partie, j’ai retrouvé tout ce que j’ai aimé dans le premier tome. Angélique a retrouvé de sa superbe, son esprit était vif et ses répliques piquantes, et c’est vraiment quelque chose que j’adore chez elle, ce côté avant gardiste. Les intrigues se sont également faites plus intéressantes, j’ai senti la différence : j’étais vraiment investie, même dans une simple partie de jeu ! La fin laisse entrevoir encore de belles évolutions, donc je préfère retenir le plaisir que j’ai pris à lire la deuxième moitié.

Το πρώτο βιβλίο δεν με είχε ενθουσιάσει μέχρι τα μισά. Το δεύτερο πραγματικά Ξετρελάθηκα. Η ιστορία της αγγελικής παρόλο που είναι πολύ ενδιαφέρον με στενοχωρεί που δεν υπάρχουν τα υπόλοιπα βιβλία. Κρίμα!!!!

September 30, 2022Относительно первой книги здесь куда меньше историчности и цельности, особенно досталось характеру Анжелики, да и слог стал каким-то рваным, больше напоминая изложение, нежели художественный текст. Это немного искупается разнообразием локаций и поклонников Анжелики, чем больше их, самых разных, тем выше вероятность, что хоть несколько из них придутся мне по нраву (пока что Дегрэ лучший), и, возможно, мне бы хватило и этого, не читай я до этого первую часть. Однако, заинтересовавшись, почему вторая так отличается, я пошла искать больше информации и обнаружила, что на самом-то деле её я и не читала: русский перевод меньше оригинала примерно на треть. Возможно, в этой трети потерялись и исторические детали, и образность, и мотивация Анжелики. Ужасно обидно, а ещё хуже то, что подобная участь постигла и третью книгу, а там ведь такая многообещающая завязка, дворцовые интриги, укрощение Филиппа, треугольник с королём!.. Жаль, но на этом цикл придётся отложить.

This book was definitely intriguing in some ways, however, it was also just not that good for me to really not be able to put it down. Disclaimer, I read this book without reading the first one in the series.
The heroine, Angelique was a strong woman with goals and courage. This book is set in 17th century France so there is a lot of issues of class, status, and money. She obviously wanted her title back because she lost when her husband was killed and wanted to be a respectable gentlewoman again. Some things that just did not add up:
* it took a long while for her to get her children.
*She was strong and opinionated but was also very moved by her feelings and emotions which changed constantly and sometimes she made decisions without thinking them through
*Marrying Philippe was an example of stupidity because she endangered her own life to get her status back¨
*While I understand that in that context title for a woman is very important, she had built companies and had a lot of money so her need to be respectable in the eyes of gentlemen and women were irritating because it was also them who had killed her beloved. She really did not need them because she already had made a name for herself without any man.
Other stuff:
*Too many names to remember, you constantly get introduced to new people and she supposedly knows pretty much everyone

Я, конечно, опоздала с чтением приключенческой литературы лет так на дцать. И отлично начавшаяся в первой книге история, хоть стилистически слабая, но сюжетно крепкая и захватывающая, во второй части как-то утратила свою последовательность. Персонажи и их мотивации теряются, мотивации самой Анжелики меняются раз десять, но автор решает не посвящать читателя в то, почему это происходит. Ну и, конечно, основная мотивация героини, которая движет ею всю книгу и заставляет идти на шантаж и прочие неважнецкие вещи, настолько мне непонятна, и настолько не вяжется с характером, опис��нным в первой книге, что весь сюжет ведет понятно куда, но непонятно зачем. В общем, дальнейшую историю я прочитала в кратком содержании в википедии и убедилась, что в сериях книг мне чаще всего интересна первая, в которой происходит становление характера героя, а "дальнейшие приключения" - не по мою душу.

Les épopées d'Angélique, dan leurs versions livres, donne à la personnalité d'Angélique un rôle qui dépasse celui de l'actrice bien connue dans les films. Cette femme est celle que nous pouvons toutes être aujourd'hui, sachant que c'est un homme qui écrit ce libre en 1957, 13 ans à peie après le vote des femmes. Autant dire qu'il y aurait bien quelques éléments à changer, si Anglique était écrite aujourd'hui. Néanmoins, un joli talent que celui de dépeindre ainsi cette femme que nous souhaitos toutes être (à peu de choses près).

Pratimo njenu borbu da preživi među takvim ljudima. Vremenom uspeva da se izvuče iz tih najnižih slojeva, uspeva da pokrene posao sa čokoladom, u vreme kada je samo mali broj ljudi znao za kakao. Sada je bogata, udala se za čoveka koga ne voli, i koji nju ne voli, da bi dobila titulu, i počinje sa raznih strana da čuje glasove koji tvrde da njen muž možda i nije izgoreo na lomači.

This is a book which I just cannot fault. It's a huge story set in old France with kings and beggars, crime and sex. Some of the most shocking and beautiful text I have ever read.
I have started learning to read French to be able to read the French only books in the series.

Originally in France Angelique was printed as one massive book that was nearly 1200 pages. In the USA, the first two parts were issued as Angelique (880 pp) , and the third part as Angelique and the King (500 pp). In England, they were released as three separate books, each about 400 pages. So if you own an American copy of Angelique and are looking for part 2, this is part of the book you already own.
I give the book itself a 5, but because there is a rel possibility that fans might get burnt by this edition, I have lowered the rating on the edition, solely for publishing issues. I also am uncertain if the same translator as the translator is uncredited on this edition. (Another serious failure as far as I am concerned.)

The best historical novel of all times. I did read it 5 times since 1972 and am just rereading it again. This book started my interest for the French kings and I discovered the books thanks to the 5 Angelique movies from the sixties which I have watched countless times.
Better than "Gone with the Wind" which I enjoyed reading. And even a little bit better than "Forever Amber" by Kathleen Winsor which I highly recommend as well.
Anne Golon has a wonderful way with words and the ability to recreate an era long gone. One of the most compelling books I've read in 45 years and definitely among my 20 best books of all times. A book for the deserted island. 10 stars!

Kniha splnila očekávání a opět mé díky patří autorce, autorům. Záleží na to, které máte vydání.
Ćíst si o sosudu ženy, která přestože se propadá na společenské dno se nevzdává a bojuje. Oceňuji její charakter a povahové vlastnosti. Sice je to silná žena, ale má momenty, kdy se opravdu vymyká svému obvyklému chování. Sledovat psychologii postav, která tu není tak dobře popsána je však povznášející.
Ćíst si o sosudu ženy, která přestože se propadá na společenské dno se nevzdává a bojuje. Oceňuji její charakter a povahové vlastnosti. J'ai adoré ce livre, premièrement, parce qu'elle sort de son hébétude. Deuxièmement, elle fait tout pour s'en sortir. On reconnait le personnage des premiers romans et sa personnalité est beaucoup près de ce à quoi une héroïne est supposée être.
