Bounty hunter Devon Chase has known Kale Ravenwood all his life, but since they became partners aboard the Prodigal, Devon is struggling to understand how much his best friend has changed. The Black Dragon Syndicate turned his best friend into a killer, and he feels like it's his job to help Kale remember his true self--the person he used to be before the syndicate. But can you teach a killer to stop killing? Kale may be able to rise from the ashes of his past, but, in the process, his friends may get burned.
I have never read any of the books by A.C. Williams so this was rather new when I came across it in my Kindle books. Given that it was a short I chose to read it as my cat selection for putting said cat back to sleep thus gaining some time back in bed myself.
Rise is a story that is meant to take place sometime in the midst of an actual series by the author while more or less discussing the relationship dynamics between two of the bounty-hunters from this one company. As a result it is a bit more of a prequel combined with scenes from the modern telling as they hunt down one of their bounties while not providing the reader with a bunch of information on the characters although decently enough that you have some fleshing of them or the background settings although still providing the reader with a standalone that doesn't need much information from the series to enjoy this short.
Combined with the bounty-hunting, Rise itself is a sci-fi book that takes place on the colonies that can be only found on the moons of Jupiter under the name of NU plus whatever country they seem to originally come from. No information is provided on why they are hunting this albino character although from the amount of his bounty he must be a really bad character, which makes sense when you take into account he is first met by the reader in a colony where the main commerce is the taking of innocence of minors, which is loathsome to think made it as the setting of this book.
Otherwise I would say this is a mostly typical sci-fi bros book with all the sex workers, the graphic fight scenes and the tale of brothership while ogling a sexy female coworker thrown in for good measure. If you are into these types of rough standards although at the same time very little sci-fi parading this book will be a good introduction to a series that you just may get interested into reading further.
