THE JAZZ HARMONY BOOK by NY pianist David Berkman is a classic, essential text on the subject. It is a course in how to add chords to melodies, showing how a single melody can give rise to rich harmonic variations. Endorsed by Kenny Werner, Fred Hersch, Mark Levine, and others, this book fills a big gap in the jazz literature and will be used by generations of jazz musicians to learn both the basics and subtleties of Jazz Harmony. Good overview of Jazz harmony. Spiral bound, which makes it easy to play the examples on piano.
My only complaint is the focus on re-harmonization assumes that the reader is a student of Jazz, trying to get better at improvising over standards. I'm sure that most readers of this book do fit that description, but there are other folks interested in the topic: composers who want to apply ideas from Jazz harmony; scholars seeking to analyze greats like McCoy Tyner or Herbie Hancock, et al; rock musicians trying to expand their vocabulary, etc.
