Yōko Kamio readily admits that she had no intention of becoming a professional manga artist when she was young. Kamio originally went to secretarial school, but her love of drawing soon led her astray. She then eventually entered the professional mangaka field in 1989. In the following years, Kamio published Suki Suki Daisuki, Ano Hi ni Aitai, and Meri-san no Hijitsu in Margaret before she finally created Hana Yori Dango in 1992.
The Hana Yori Dango manga became established relatively quickly in Japan. Many people commended Kamio for her realistic portrayal of high school life and everyday violence through the Hana Yori Dango series. Although Kamio was initially surprised by the confessions of high school violence stated in fan letters, she realized that Tsukushi's fiery character served as a role model for much of Japan's youth and helped others cope with school violence.

Voice CDs by SMAP and a live action movie about Hanadan charted the series success in the mid-1990s. By 1995, an animated series for Hana Yori Dango was already in progress and Kamio had also helped pick main leads for the anime show.
Hana Yori Dango ran in the Japanese Margaret magazine as well as the Korean Wink. The series has also been published in Japanese, Chinese, Cantonese, Thai, Korean, French, and English. The anime series has been broadcasted in Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Italy, and has also been licensed and released in the United States. Additionally, it was also recreated in a Game Boy Color game (only released in Japan) during the summer of 2001. With its ever-increasing popularity, Hana Yori Dango was then made into a popular live action TV series in Taiwan titled Meteor Garden. The manga series finally ended in Margaret's August 2003 issue, and the 36th tankōbon which included the Akira special "Night of the Crescent Moon" was released in January 2004 as the manga's final volume.
While Yoko Kamio initially wanted Hanazawa Rui to be the main hero of Hana Yori Dango, due to the outstanding personality of Domyoji Tsukasa (and Domyoji also becoming more popular than Rui) she changed the hero role to Domyoji.
Despite Hana Yori Dango's success, Kamio had originally planned to end the series by Spring 2000. However, in February 2000, at a mangaka conference in Taipei, Taiwan Kamio announced that she would continue writing Hana Yori Dango. After the failed double date, everybody discovers what a jerk Yuki’s boyfriend really is. Soujiro comes up with a plan to help Yuki teach her boyfriend a lesson and a plan to help Tsukasa and Tsukushi with their relationship. In other words, Soujiro is finally getting the character arc he deserves. 🙏🏼
As much as F4 start off as jerks at the beginning of the story, at this point in the series, my opinion of them has changed. Unlike most of the other guys in this story, they are among the few who encourage the girls around them to be strong, independent women. I kind of love it.

By Volume 20, the series leans into mature emotional beats, showing how far Tsukushi and Tsukasa have come from their earlier, combative beginnings. This volume offers moments of real tenderness and quiet growth, though these are still interrupted by misunderstandings and outside drama that feel familiar by now. Some side characters get more spotlight, adding variety, but also slightly diffusing the central romance’s focus. Visually, the artwork continues to deliver expressive faces and dynamic paneling, keeping the reader invested despite a somewhat predictable arc.

Pertama baca manga ini waktu umurku 10 tahunan - ikut membaca waktu kakakku sewa dari taman bacaan komik di dekat SMA-nya. Sebetulnya ini terlalu dewasa, sih, untuk anak SD haha. But anyway, dulu rasanya cukup menikmati karena karakternya goodlooking dan stylish. Alur ceritanya juga banyak yang membuat ngakak. Sekarang, umurku 30 tahun dan membaca ini cukup merasa terganggu di banyak hal: romantisasi abuse, violence, sexual harassment, institutionalized bullying, dan membangun mindset 'I can fix him' untuk remaja perempuan. Memang, sih, manga ini 'kan dibuatnya tahun 1992 - mungkin society memang belum seprogresif sekarang. Tapi jadinya menurut saya manga ini lebih cocok ditujukan untuk orang dewasa, ya, ketimbang remaja putri seperti shoujo pada umumnya.

Eh tapi, dari 19 volume sebelumnya yang penuh kekerasan fisik, kekerasan verbal, dan pemaksaan, rasanya mulai volume 19 ini tokoh-tokoh mulai lembut dan berani menunjukkan kasih sayang. Mungkin ini pendewasaan, ya.. Baguslah!!

Ternyata pacar Yuki memang laki-laki brengsek! Dan ternyata Tsukasa Doumyouji (ML 1) sangat beralasan menghajarnya - hanya saja Tsukushi Makino (FL) baru menyadarinya agak belakangan, ketika Ia dan Yuki tidak sengaja melihat pacar Yuki di taman sedang menggoda perempuan lain. Yuki sangat syok karena itu adalah pacaran pertamanya, dan berakhir tidak menyenangkan. Dalam kesedihannya, Yuki tidak sengaja bertemu Sojiro Nishikado (anggota F4) yang mendapatinya menangis dan menghiburnya. Dari sana mereka terpikir untuk membalas dendam pada pacar Yuki, tentu saja dengan cara yang lebih elegan. Dan berhasil!
Ternyata Yuki dan Sojiro cepat akrab, mereka berkencan dan membuat Tsukushi panik karena tau Sojiro sebenarnya playboy juga. Tsukushi takut Yuki diapa-apakan. Dalam kencan mereka, Tsukushi diam-diam mengikuti mereka, tapi juga dengan bantuan Tsukasa. Sampai akhirnya Yuki dan Sojiro berakhir di hotel, membuat Tsukushi juga memesan kamar di sebelah mereka - tentu bersama Tsukasa. Begitu serunya sampai akhirnya Tsukushi dan Tsukasa menyadari kalau mereka sengaja dijebak oleh Yuki dan Sujiro, memang supaya mereka ke hotel. Dalam keseruan itu, ternyata Kaede Doumyouji pulang dari London dan mampir ke hotel yang ternyata memang milik Doumyouji Group.

And then we see the new couple doing what couples do - go on double dates? Anyway, Tsukasa went out with Tsukushi for a double date with Yuri and her bf. It did not end well as he punched Yuri’s bf in the end - but it was with a very good reason. However, just like everytime these two fight, it was only later that Tsukushi realized that Tsukasa was doing the right thing. Gee girl, how can you be like that.
Furthermore, Soujiro saved the day for Yuri! It was a cute and sweet scene where he helped Yuri revenged on her asshole ex bf.
Finally, Soujiro and Yuri played cupids in the end. Little did Tsukushi know that instead of them playing detective for the two, it was all a set-up for her and Tsukasa to have a good time.

Creo que este es, hasta el momento, mi tomo favorito. La doble cita, el desastre que pasó después y, lo que todos amamos, el inicio de Yuki y Sojiro. Me encanta esa pareja, dios mío, necesito un spin off de ellos en todas las versiones que he visto. Además, me encantó cuándo Tsukushi y Tsukasa los persiguen, y de casualidad terminan teniendo una cita. La parte del hotel fue mi favorita porque por un momento Tsukushi se olvidó de su misión y realmente empezó a disfrutar el tiempo con su novio. Poco a poco, podemos ver cómo se va desarrollando su relación, y yo soy fan.

Este tomo me encanta por dos cosas, la primera es su portada, es PRECIOSA y en segundo lugar porque es a partir de este capítulo que apareció el ship que más amo de este manga YukixNishikado, ah dios mío no saben cómo me gustan estos dos. Nishikado es tan atento con Yuki, me muero❤

The aftermath of the double date and learning to not take things at face value. The almost-couple's relationship is pushed to the early limits, again. This is a story that keeps you on you toes, if you like rom-coms with a dash of drama.

J'ai cru que ce jour n'arriverait jamais, mais si enfin, j'ai passé un bon moment du début à la fin de ce tome vingt d'Hana Yori Dango. Il en aura fallu du temps… plus de la moitié de l'histoire. Et encore une fois, je suis allée aussi loin car j'ai racheté la collection entière, je pense que sinon, j'aurais abandonné depuis longtemps…
J'avais une petite appréhension tout de même. Il y avait de l'amélioration depuis un petit moment, mais là avec l'embrouille à la fin du tome dix-neuf… je nous voyais encore une fois revenir au point de départ. Domyoji a frappé le petit copain de Yuki (aka la meilleure amie de Tsukushi) car celui-ci va voir ailleurs sans vergogne. Pour une fois, utilisation de la violence méritée, et pas trop abusive, mais voilà, la tête de mule ne veut pas s'expliquer et bien évidemment, Tsukushi pense qu'il est irrécupérable.
Et là je me suis dit que c'est mort… ils ne vont pas arriver à passer cette étape. Et puis, les choses m'ont agréablement surprises par la suite. Yuki et Tsukushi apprennent la vérité en attrapant le coupable sur le fait. Pas un moment très sympathique à voir, surtout que Yuki est un ange absolue. Et à partir de là, une vengeance se met en place avec un personnage assez inattendu. J'avoue que le duo qui se forme m'a tout de suite charmé. Ils sont aux antipodes l'un de l'autre mais je me dis que ça pourrait totalement marcher. Les garçons prouvent une fois de plus qu'ils sont devenus des amis sur qui on peut compter et c'est une constante qui fait du bien.
Domyoji et Tsukushi arrivent plus ou moins à faire la paix également et si le garçon a beaucoup de mal à cacher ses sentiments pour notre héroïne (moment très chou d'ailleurs), pour elle, c'est encore la phase du « mais pourquoi je ressens ça ». Et je me dis que voilà, c'est cela que les lecteurs voulaient. Il aurait fallu supprimer les seize / dix-sept premiers tomes et commencer là, sans toute la violence et les moqueries d'avant. Parce que pour le coup, même si je les trouve très mignons maintenant, je ne peux pas m'empêcher de repenser à tout ce que Tsukushi a vécu… Et c'est difficile de pardonner.
Je vais cependant me concentrer sur ce renouveau et sur l'ambiance shojo que j'attendais tant. J'espère sincèrement que la suite sera dans la même veine…

A decent volume, but not one of my favorites of the series. Tsukushi and Tsukasa, who have only recently begun dating, go on a double date with Yuki and her boyfriend. The volume begins with Tsukasa punching the guy for being a sexist jerk. Tsukasa refuses to tell Tsukushi why and the two of them fight. Yuki and Soujiro become friends in this volume when he helps her deal with her boyfriend, and Tsukushi and Tsukasa go on a kind of date, following Soujiro and Yuki around because Tsukushi doesn't trust him with her best friend.
I'm glad I finally own it, but it isn't one of the volume of the series has high reread value for me. Still, this series gave me SO MUCH enjoyment, my first time reading it, so I'm glad to finally own some of the volumes. Can't wait until my set is complete. Yoko Kamio definitely deserves my money.

There was something in the way all of the characters came together that I found irresistibly compelling about this series. It did remind me a lot of Ouran while I was reading it and maybe that is why I liked it so much. Tsukushi is an interesting protagonist, I loved when she started taking action and sticking up for herself.
While I wasn’t overly fond of the artwork style I was able to get past it because I my love for the storyline. This is an honest story with twists and turns, ups and downs, but then again that is real life.
I would really recommend watching the anime too!

Woooooot!! Go Tsukushi go!! I really loved this volume!! It was so great to see everyone come together for Yuki's sake and help her teach that loser boyfriend of hers a lesson. I was also so very happy Sojiro wasn't being an annoying teenage girl for once! This will no doubt be one of my favorite volumes of BoF!
