Yōko Kamio readily admits that she had no intention of becoming a professional manga artist when she was young. Kamio originally went to secretarial school, but her love of drawing soon led her astray. She then eventually entered the professional mangaka field in 1989. In the following years, Kamio published Suki Suki Daisuki, Ano Hi ni Aitai, and Meri-san no Hijitsu in Margaret before she finally created Hana Yori Dango in 1992.
The Hana Yori Dango manga became established relatively quickly in Japan. Many people commended Kamio for her realistic portrayal of high school life and everyday violence through the Hana Yori Dango series. Although Kamio was initially surprised by the confessions of high school violence stated in fan letters, she realized that Tsukushi's fiery character served as a role model for much of Japan's youth and helped others cope with school violence.
Kamio watched as the success of Hana Yori Dango's 1992 début followed through with many more months on the best-sellers list. Voice CDs by SMAP and a live action movie about Hanadan charted the series success in the mid-1990s. By 1995, an animated series for Hana Yori Dango was already in progress and Kamio had also helped pick main leads for the anime show.
Hana Yori Dango ran in the Japanese Margaret magazine as well as the Korean Wink. The series has also been published in Japanese, Chinese, Cantonese, Thai, Korean, French, and English. The anime series has been broadcasted in Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Italy, and has also been licensed and released in the United States. Additionally, it was also recreated in a Game Boy Color game (only released in Japan) during the summer of 2001. With its ever-increasing popularity, Hana Yori Dango was then made into a popular live action TV series in Taiwan titled Meteor Garden. The manga series finally ended in Margaret's August 2003 issue, and the 36th tankōbon which included the Akira special "Night of the Crescent Moon" was released in January 2004 as the manga's final volume.
While Yoko Kamio initially wanted Hanazawa Rui to be the main hero of Hana Yori Dango, due to the outstanding personality of Domyoji Tsukasa (and Domyoji also becoming more popular than Rui) she changed the hero role to Domyoji.
Despite Hana Yori Dango's success, Kamio had originally planned to end the series by Spring 2000. However, in February 2000, at a mangaka conference in Taipei, Taiwan Kamio announced that she would continue writing Hana Yori Dango. Volume 19 of Hana Yori Dango continues the turbulent relationship between Tsukushi Makino and Tsukasa Domyoji, but while it has its emotional beats, it also feels like it’s running in circles. The plot focuses heavily on misunderstandings and forced drama, which, though characteristic of the series, here feel more exhausting than exciting. Tsukushi’s resilience and Tsukasa’s gradual softening remain endearing, but the pacing drags, with some scenes stretching beyond their emotional payoff.
The artwork still captures the charm and comedic energy of the story, and certain heartfelt moments shine through the chaos. However, compared to earlier volumes, this installment lacks the fresh spark and narrative drive. It’s an okay continuation for loyal readers, but not a standout chapter in the saga.

Their double date was so funny! I found it hilarious... So much fun! I like Tsukashi and Tsukasa dating.

Pertama baca manga ini waktu umurku 10 tahunan - ikut membaca waktu kakakku sewa dari taman bacaan komik di dekat SMA-nya. Sebetulnya ini terlalu dewasa, sih, untuk anak SD haha. But anyway, dulu rasanya cukup menikmati karena karakternya goodlooking dan stylish. Alur ceritanya juga banyak yang membuat ngakak. Sekarang, umurku 30 tahun dan membaca ini cukup merasa terganggu di banyak hal: romantisasi abuse, violence, sexual harassment, institutionalized bullying, dan membangun mindset 'I can fix him' untuk remaja perempuan. Memang, sih, manga ini 'kan dibuatnya tahun 1992 - mungkin society memang belum seprogresif sekarang. Tapi jadinya menurut saya manga ini lebih cocok ditujukan untuk orang dewasa, ya, ketimbang remaja putri seperti shoujo pada umumnya.

Akhirnya Tsukushi Makino (FL) bekerja di rumah Tsukasa Doumyouji (ML 1) dan dia bertemu dengan Kepala Pelayan, Tama, yang ternyata menyuruhnya menjadi pelayan pribadi Tsukasa. Tsubaki Doumyouji sangat senang dengan hal itu. Pada satu malam, Tsukasa menyuruh Tsukushi ke kamarnya tapi Tsukushi sangat takut, sampai akhirnya Tsukasa yang mampir ke kamar Tsukushi sambil membawa teleskop. Setelah mengaturnya, Tsukasa menyuruh Tsukushi melihat dengan teleskop dan Ia melihat Planet Saturnus. Begitu indahnya sampai ketika Tsukushi selesai melihatnya, Tsukasa memberikannya kalung berbandul Planet Saturnus! Tsukasa dengan mantap berkata bahwa Ia mencintai Tsukushi dan ingin mereka berpacaran. Tsukushi meminta waktu dan Tsukasa memberinya sampai jam 7 pagi. Kalau Tsukushi mau berpacaran, mereka akan mencoba sampai dua bulan untuk memutuskan lanjut atau tidak. Kalau tidak lanjut, mereka harus berjalan masing-masing dan tidak kembali lagi selamanya. Tsukushi bingung tapi Ia merasa baru akan tau kalau mencobanya. Akhirnya Ia mengiyakan ajakan Tsukasa untuk berpacaran di pagi hari dan Tsukasa sangat senang.
Tapi tentu ada syaratnya! Tsukushi ingin agar Tsukasa berkompromi dengan kondisi Tsukushi yang berasal dari keluarga miskin, Ia ingin Tsukasa mengenalnya dan mencoba bergaul sederhana sepertinya. Dimulai dengan cara double date dengan Yuki, sahabat Tsukushi, dan pacar barunya. Awalnya Tsukasa menolaknya karena terasa norak, tapi akhirnya Tsukasa ikut juga acara double date itu. Suasana tegang karena ternyata pacar Yuki sok asik dan tidak sopan, tapi Tsukasa berusaha menahan diri untuk tidak memukulnya. Tapi akhirnya, ketika Tsukasa tidak sengaja mendapati pacar Yuki genit dengan perempuan lain - Ia menghajarnya.

Domyoji and Makino agree to start dating for two months. The problem is neither one has experience with a boyfriend/girlfriend and things are awkward as they try and figure it out. It doesn't help that Makino has taken a job as a live-in maid at Domyoji's house and has been assigned as a personal maid to Domyoji.
Things are awkward between the couple, but I think it's mostly due to all the attention from others. No one leaves them alone to figure it all out! Give them some time, people. They're getting there.

Me encanta lo de los dos meses de prueba, pero Domyoji debería poder controlarse más, es entendible que reaccionara de esa forma después de que insultaran a la chica que quiere, pero vamos, no es tan difícil, lo ignoras y ya, pero ahora ¿como le explicará a Makino que ha pegado al novio de su mejor amiga porque le ha insultado? No le creerá, Makino necesita ver que Domyoji es capaz de controlar su temperamento por ella.

I find it really hard to hate Domyoji, because even though he starts off as a real jerk, he grows and changes as the series progresses, and while it does not make up for the bullying he did, he is changing and that is good.
The series is still well paced and the story doesn't feel dragged out.
I would like more knowledge of the rest of the F4 and what is going on with their lives, but I guess this series really isn't about them.

There was a tension about having sex in here btw. It was however realistic in a sense that Tsukasa is already 18 and of course, as F2 always teased him about, he was a naturally healthy young male. Har har

El collarcito de Saturno (aunque admito que me gusta más la versión de BOF y el live action japonés del manga). Está bien raro que Tsukushi trabaje como su criada, pero ha habido cosas peores en esta historia que ya ni me extraña.

Je ne pensais pas que cela arriverait, mais si enfin un tome d'Hana Yori Dango où je passe un bon moment du début à la fin. J'ai tout de même du mal à ne pas rester sur mes gardes, si bien que je m'attends toujours au pire, mais on va dire que l'on a enfin atteint la vitesse de croisière et que Yoko Kamio se consacre enfin à une vraie romance.
Premier point que j'ai beaucoup aimé : la complicité et l'amitié qui est de plus en plus exploitées entre les garçons et Tsukushi. Cela amène à des situations drôles, et là pour le coup qui le sont vraiment, et aussi mignonnes. Les trois amis l'ont vraiment intégré à leur groupe et on les sent impliqué, même s'ils sont parfois un peu à côté de la plaque. Mais heureusement Rui est aussi là pour les modérer un peu. La dynamique est vraiment sympathique et cela permet d'un peu respirer après tout ce qui a pu se passer avant.
Côté romance nous sommes enfin en face de quelque chose de "normal" pour un shojo. Normal entre guillemets, bien entendu parce qu'entre la situation et les deux héros, la normalité, c'est assez une bonne blague. Mais cela fait aussi le charme de l'histoire. Domyoji et Tsukushi se retrouvent à devoir cohabiter sous le même toit, et Tsukushi à travailler pour lui. C'est comique et là encore dans le bon sens (je le redis : enfin !). Et puis, il y a le fameux déclic que l'on attend depuis dix-huit tomes maintenant. Les deux décident enfin de se donner une chance. Les débuts sont loin d'être facile mais je trouve que pour une fois il y a une bonne exploitation des personnalités des deux personnages (diamétralement opposées) et aussi de leur milieu respectif. Il va y avoir un long chemin à parcourir mais pour une fois, je me dis que cela devrait être intéressant. Surtout que la dernière partie du tome montre bien combien Domyoji est prêt à faire des efforts et qu'il peut se montrer humain et attentionné. J'ai un peu peur pour la dernière planche par contre... Certes le lecteur comprend son geste, mais pour ce qui est de notre héroïne... Un retour en arrière pourrait se profiler, et je serai un peu déçue si c'était le cas, alors que l'on vient à peine de voir naître quelque chose de positif.

pretty much from here on out, this series is fairly typical in shojo territory. the abuse has completely died down, and all of the dilemmas are extremely predictable. since i read practically half of this series on-line (from about vol 22 onward), i won't really add much more in terms of a review. if you could start reading from about this volume and move onwards, i would purchase this series. since it does not, i don't think i can stomach starting it over again, despite it being increasingly better towards the end.

There was something in the way all of the characters came together that I found irresistibly compelling about this series. It did remind me a lot of Ouran while I was reading it and maybe that is why I liked it so much. Tsukushi is an interesting protagonist, I loved when she started taking action and sticking up for herself.
While I wasn’t overly fond of the artwork style I was able to get past it because I my love for the storyline. This is an honest story with twists and turns, ups and downs, but then again that is real life.
I would really recommend watching the anime too!
