Yōko Kamio readily admits that she had no intention of becoming a professional manga artist when she was young. Kamio originally went to secretarial school, but her love of drawing soon led her astray. She then eventually entered the professional mangaka field in 1989. In the following years, Kamio published Suki Suki Daisuki, Ano Hi ni Aitai, and Meri-san no Hijitsu in Margaret before she finally created Hana Yori Dango in 1992.
The Hana Yori Dango manga became established relatively quickly in Japan. Many people commended Kamio for her realistic portrayal of high school life and everyday violence through the Hana Yori Dango series. Although Kamio was initially surprised by the confessions of high school violence stated in fan letters, she realized that Tsukushi's fiery character served as a role model for much of Japan's youth and helped others cope with school violence.
Kamio watched as the success of Hana Yori Dango's 1992 début followed through with many more months on the best-sellers list. Voice CDs by SMAP and a live action movie about Hanadan charted the series success in the mid-1990s. By 1995, an animated series for Hana Yori Dango was already in progress and Kamio had also helped pick main leads for the anime show.
Hana Yori Dango ran in the Japanese Margaret magazine as well as the Korean Wink. The series has also been published in Japanese, Chinese, Cantonese, Thai, Korean, French, and English. The anime series has been broadcasted in Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Italy, and has also been licensed and released in the United States. Additionally, it was also recreated in a Game Boy Color game (only released in Japan) during the summer of 2001. With its ever-increasing popularity, Hana Yori Dango was then made into a popular live action TV series in Taiwan titled Meteor Garden. The manga series finally ended in Margaret's August 2003 issue, and the 36th tankōbon which included the Akira special "Night of the Crescent Moon" was released in January 2004 as the manga's final volume.
While Yoko Kamio initially wanted Hanazawa Rui to be the main hero of Hana Yori Dango, due to the outstanding personality of Domyoji Tsukasa (and Domyoji also becoming more popular than Rui) she changed the hero role to Domyoji.

However, in February 2000, at a mangaka conference in Taipei, Taiwan Kamio announced that she would continue writing Hana Yori Dango. Anyway, Tama had me rolling! She was like "Something more foolish than anything else's he's ever done in his life...? How is that even possible? in response to Tsukasa saying he was about to do the most foolish thing.

She steps on a puddle and Tsubasa’s double tells her to be careful and she sees that he “cares” for her? But everything Tsubasa’s done for her never crossed her that he cared?
Tsubasa forces a kiss on her and she’s calls him a perverts, gets upset about it.
This Amon dude forces himself on her and she’s willingly going to the amusement park with him at night because she’s not even upset anymore.
Sorry but the writer makes it so hard to root for Tsukushi. I just don’t get how everyone is so caring towards her, and also feeling so sorry for her.
At one point Tsubaki and Tama said, Tsubasa is no longer cold because of a good person like Tsukushi.

Other than being in love with her because the writer write him out to be, never once in the story did I ever see her show him compassions of a regular person who doesn’t have all the money in the world.
Throughout all 25 volumes, all Tsukushi ever did was argue with Tsubasa, believes everyone else over him, gives him crap for the same thing she pardon other people for.
My eyeballs might get stuck before I finish this series because I can’t stand how everyone’s feeling so sorry for Tsukushi and every new boy that comes into the story falls in love with her instantly because of how “strong” she is. PLEASE! She is anything but what everyone makes her to be. (One of the biggest Shoujo troupe I dislike!)

Volume 25 carries a mix of high emotional stakes and the trademark chaos of Hana Yori Dango. Tsukushi’s feelings for Tsukasa have grown more solid, but family and societal pressures weigh heavily on their relationship. The plot leans into moments of heartfelt connection, though some side arcs feel drawn out and distract from the central romance. The volume works best in its intense, emotional confrontations, where both characters’ growth is most visible. The expressive art helps maintain engagement even when the pacing dips.

Pertama baca manga ini waktu umurku 10 tahunan - ikut membaca waktu kakakku sewa dari taman bacaan komik di dekat SMA-nya. Sebetulnya ini terlalu dewasa, sih, untuk anak SD haha. But anyway, dulu rasanya cukup menikmati karena karakternya goodlooking dan stylish. Alur ceritanya juga banyak yang membuat ngakak. Sekarang, umurku 30 tahun dan membaca ini cukup merasa terganggu di banyak hal: romantisasi abuse, violence, sexual harassment, institutionalized bullying, dan membangun mindset 'I can fix him' untuk remaja perempuan. Memang, sih, manga ini 'kan dibuatnya tahun 1992 - mungkin society memang belum seprogresif sekarang. Tapi jadinya menurut saya manga ini lebih cocok ditujukan untuk orang dewasa, ya, ketimbang remaja putri seperti shoujo pada umumnya.

Namun ternyata cara ini malah jadi semakin sulit, ketika Kiyonaga mulai betulan menyukai Tsukushi. Begitupun Tsukushi yang merasa bahwa Kiyonaga lebih memahaminya sebagai sesama orang biasa. Dan ternyata, nama asli Kiyonaga adalah Amon Kunisawa (ML 4), yang memang orang asing kebetulan mirip saja dengan Tsukasa Doumyouji.
Dari dinamika ini, Amon mengajak Tsukushi untuk betulan menjalin hubungan romansa dan ternyata Tsukushi berminat...

I pity Tsukushi. She is still just in high school and yet she has been through so much. Her heart, after coming out of it all, will be so tough as she will.
Amon is helpful in a way he is showing Tsukushi the other side of life. Way to go Tsukasa! Tsukushi is really lucky to have you.

Can this guy who looks like Tsubaka leave already? I really don't like him. I'm ready for things to get back to just Tsukushi and Tsubaka.
The pace was okay though. Still this look alike guy made it so it was just an average volume.

Siento que Amon solo apareció para darle más drama a la historia, y hasta ahora no se sabe cómo así es tan idéntico a Tsukasa.

Tsukushi's love life is a chaotic. She tries to stay away from the guy she likes by seeing the guy who looks like him. This series seems to enjoy tugging at the heart strings.

Il y a vraiment du mieux, c'est très sympathique de voir que l'on est dans une bonne phase et qu'elle perdure. Impossible de ne pas rester sur mes gardes, mais vraiment il y a de plus en plus de positif, et c'est rassurant de se dire que la fin de cette aventure pourrait être satisfaisante à souhait.
J'ai trouvé que ce tome vingt-cinq sortait réellement du lot. Je ne pensais pas écrire un jour cela concernant Hana Yori Dango, mais il y a une certaine profondeur ici que j'ai réellement appréciée. Déjà, il y a une vraie réflexion sur les différences de classe. Il était temps. Plusieurs héros et à différents niveaux ont des discussions qui tournent autour de ce point. C'était très intéressant, et une mise au point qu'il était temps d'aborder. Ensuite, nos deux héros font une nouvelle fois face à leurs sentiments chacun de leurs côtés. Leurs réflexions se complètent et en même temps, vu le contexte, elles prennent aussi des voies différentes. Et franchement, c'est cela que j'attendais depuis le début. Donc, j'étais très contente de voir tout cela.
Il y a aussi pas mal de moments poignants. Shigeru se montre encore une fois une amie adorable, malgré ses sentiments toujours présents pour Domyoji, envers nos deux héros. Mais la partie la plus touchante reste sans doute le moment où le jeune homme lui dit qu'elle est son amie. Ce n'est pas grand-chose et en même temps, c'est tellement, surtout venant de lui. Son cercle s'agrandit, il change un peu depuis que Tsukushi est apparu dans sa vie. Et c'est vraiment avec ce tome que l'on en prend conscience. Tsubaki est aussi pas mal présente, et mon adoration pour la grande soeur de notre héros ne faiblit pas. Elle s'est toujours montrée attentionnée, drôle et prévenante. J'adorerais la voir dans le rôle de maman. Je pense qu'elle serait parfaite, elle le prouve bien assez depuis le départ.
Et puis il y a notre petite Tsukushi… elle se débat avec ses sentiments tout en essayant d'aller de l'avant. C'est un peu douloureux à voir, et en même temps, elle nous prouve encore une fois combien elle est courageuse. Et j'aimerai tellement que sa vie devienne un petit peu plus facile… Quand je pense que tout dépend d'une seule personne… c'est assez triste de voir que les préjugés d'une seule personne peuvent ruiner tant de vies…

There was something in the way all of the characters came together that I found irresistibly compelling about this series. It did remind me a lot of Ouran while I was reading it and maybe that is why I liked it so much. Tsukushi is an interesting protagonist, I loved when she started taking action and sticking up for herself.
While I wasn’t overly fond of the artwork style I was able to get past it because I my love for the storyline. This is an honest story with twists and turns, ups and downs, but then again that is real life.
I would really recommend watching the anime too!

I really love Tsubaki! She's so great!
What is up with this Amon character... I can't really tell if we're supposed to like him or hate him. He has moments I think he's great, and then moments I want to punch his lights out.
I wonder if Tsukushi really is in love with Tsukasa romantically? I can't believe that she is. With how much distress he causes her, I think she just really cares about him. That's were Amon hit it right on the head - she feels like she needs to love him so he's not hurting. I'm still really hoping they don't get together in the end, though we all know they will :-/

Please. Can I roll my eyes even more? Tsukushi can I shoot you? You're driving me insane in the worst way. Everything you do or say pisses me off. Tsukasa is so nice, (though a big bully and way too hot headed sometimes)yet, she can't even see it!!!! I really want to smack her, can't someone smack her please?? Why am I still reading this??

I love pages 50-51 - where you're "hearing" Shigeru's words, but your seeing Tsukasa's thoughts (memories of Tsukushi). This is an excellent example of how a graphic novel can communicate several things instantaneously for intense emotional impact.
