A Witch's Book of Silence

Rate this book
A Witch's Book of Silence will help you deepen your practice and increase the efficacy of your magic. Silence is the space from which creative impulse flows. In silence we touch the power we call God/dess and become attuned to wisdom beyond our own. We learn to commune with the spirits of land, our ancestors and others of the unseen realms. We enter the ineffable mystery sought by ancient and contemporary mystics alike. Through silent communion we attain ecstatic union with the Divine. The book addresses some of the most pressing and controversial concerns of the Craft as both a modern-day movement and private, religious system. A Witch's Book of Silence is a mirror for us individually and collectively. Here we see reflected our beauty and power as well as our fear and foibles.Divided into three segments. The first defines terms, explores concepts and discusses how and why we resist the practice of silence. The second segment offers practices leading the seeker into the heart of silence where the mysteries are revealed . The final segment offers a glimpse of what awaits us should we dare to steep ourselves in the cauldron of transformation.A Witch’s Book of Silence is born out of decades of studying, practicing and teaching the art of Witchcraft during which time the author noted the impact of the internet on the transfer of once closely guarded information. The Witch's Pyramid became unbalanced as the powers to Know, Will and Dare were highly sought after while Keeping Silent fell out of fashion--a silly, scary and inconsequential relic of the past. The Witch must confront and overcome her fear and resistance to entering the realms of silence. Keeping silent is necessary to build power, perform effective magic and engage deeply with the mysteries. While written from the perspective of a Feri Witch, the concerns, practices and resolutions offered will be equally valuable when applied to any spiritual path requiring the practitioner develop self-awareness, personal integrity, cognizant communication with spirit and the use of meaningful speech imbued with creative force.

This is a book that I'll never actually be 'done' with. I've read it cover to cover a few times, and I continue to consider Karina's philosophies, and to practice the art of holding silence and of keeping my own counsel.
Sometimes a book comes along that changes how you live, or how you think. This slim, unassuming volume is one of those rarities. I don't think I've ever been so grateful for the self-publishing boom. In a market cluttered with claptrap, self-help books that regurgitate the same spiel over and over, and 'witchcraft' books that lack any real substance Karina Blackheart's offering stands out like a diamond amid costume jewelry.
Yes. It is that good. In spite of the typos that are a given for self-published work, and the slimness of the volume itself. The page count is low because there isn't really any chaff here. Karina writes from experience and the heart, and she does so with candor and an honesty that's humbling. No frills, just the facts ma'am. There's no ego here, just an offering of very valuable tools and advice. Something anyone could use and benefit by, if they were to expend some effort in trying.
The formal meditative practice is deceptively simple, but has paid off for me both in front of my altar and away from it. The contemplative exercises that follow have changed how I think about myself, how I do things, and where I choose to direct my attention and energy.

For me the work here is essential.
Maybe it would be for you too?

Skip the First Half

If I were to edit this book, I would toss out most of the first half altogether and use the last section, Embodiment, as the introduction and reasoning for why To Keep Silent is important for today's Witches.

The middle part of the book contains great exercises and instructions on practicing silence both in sacred space, and in our every day lives. I think it's a great resource to start bringing more silence into a magical life.

The first half comes off as scattered and somewhat like a series of lectures and warnings to a would-be student. There are some gems of genuinely good advice here, but I didn't feel like the information had a focus nor do I feel like most of the information belonged in this particular book.

People new to Witchcraft as a practice will find some useful information in the first half, but if you are already past the initiate stage, skim this and skip to the next large section of the book.

This book was difficult to read to start with, but it got easier and more interesting too. The author brought up a lot of really good points. She explained the importance of silence really well and inspiring.
One thing that stopped me giving this book 5 out of 5 stars is the use of pronouns. I understand she was trying to be gender neutral but it gave me a headache when she flipped from he to she so frequently.

Wow!

I started this book with an open mind. I'm a talker. Always have been. But I do understand the power of silence. Or I thought I did. This will be a book that I go back and read again and again. I know I will get more each time that will benefit myself, those around me, and my craft. Thank you Ms. Blackheart for your words of wisdom. They are appreciated.

This book gave me a lot to think about in my own practice, and I really appreciated BlackHeart's spiritual perspective. It tasted a little too strongly of Feri Wicca for my taste at times. I also can't help but think that BlackHeart repeats herself often and could have shortened this book by a bout 1/4, which is a little ironic given her subject matter and point of view.

A great read for any spiritual path, this book shows the strength and power that comes from silence. Not just quiet in general, but also knowing when to speak and when its best not to.

Thoughtful, and each word chosen with precision. She explores or world with silence and our discomfort around holding that kind of power, not to diminish or beliefs, but target to strengthen them. I read the book all the way through and then again to deepen through the exercises. I'm very glad I took that extra time to really work with what the book is intended for.

This author is gifted with a poetic mastery over the English language. The book itself was at times repetitive, and may well have been better expressed as an essay. I'd advise better organization and more exercises to make each chapter a little less redundant in future editions or spinoff titles. That said, there were gems among the sea of prose. I shared the fear meditation with my cancer survivor support group.
