Wildfire #2

Ebon Fire

Rate this book
Ancient dragon shifter and firefighter Owen Davies is plagued by the past. For centuries he's run from the demons that haunt him, but now they're finally catching up. When Owen starts hallucinating on the job, he's ordered to do the one thing he can't fathom: Talk to a professional about his problems.

After a messy breakup, the last thing psychiatrist Simon Prichard wants is another relationship. A hookup at a bar, though? That he can handle, and a handsome, intense stranger makes it impossible to say no.

But when Simon's one night stand turns out to be his newest patient, he just can't seem to let the man go. Not if there's any possibility of helping him.

Simon is just what Owen needs, and his dragon is determined to have the kind doctor, even if claiming him could spell the end of their future together.

As Owen and Simon grow closer, a dark force from the past threatens to rip them apart by playing on Owen's worst fears. If he wants to save his mate and their unborn child, he'll have to confront the nightmare head-on.

Ebon Fire is Book 2 in the Wildfire Series, but it can also be enjoyed as a standalone. It's a full-length novel with a HEA ending, a satisfying epilogue, and NO CLIFFHANGERS!

Content Notice: This book contains steamy love scenes and male pregnancy, or Mpreg. Adults only shifter romance!

3.5 rounded up. I'm not writing a full review but I want to mention a few thoughts.

These days you don't always know if an author is actually a male, a female, or using a pseudonym. The dragon MCs in both books have a certain...abrasive quality that rode the line between confident almost an asshole and conceited bastard I wanna kick in the nuts. I like it when a character ruffles my feathers. I like asshole characters - as long as they never cross that line. The point I'm slowly getting to is that I think this author is actually male or else she writes male pov very well.

Disclaimer: I am NOT saying that women writers cannot write male pov well. I'm also NOT saying all male writers write male pov well. I've read books from female writers that made me swear they were tucking and taping and I've read male writers that give me nauseating flashbacks of my grandmother's doily covered, floral print sofa.

Well Duck, you've certainly driven this off into the ditch.

Pros:

*I like the author's voice.
*Characters are likeable.
*Mpreg is actually mpreg and the fact that

Cons:
*Needs an editor. There were errors that spellcheck and a proofreader could have easily caught. The second book is actually worse than the first in number of errors.
*At times the writing is confusing. I get that the author meant certain scenes to be an alternate reality/illusion but at times I felt a bit muddled.

Pro or Con?

**Grammar**

In this 2nd book we read about Owen. Like Liam he is a dragon shifter with a sad past.
Owen works as a firefighter and he is good at his job, the fact that the fire cant hurt him like any other human is one of the reasons. No one knows that he is a dragon and he wants to keep it that way. One day while on the job he starts having hallucinations about a woman dying in a fire. He is remembering the day, centuries ago, when Liam asked him for his help to destroy the Ebonwings' village. For him Liam was like a father, still is, and he had wanted to help him get his revenge, but since that day Owen hadnt been the same anymore. He is plagued by what he did and this almost gets him killed while trying to rescue a family from a fire. His boss tells him to talk with a professional, and that if he doesnt he will lose his job.

Simon is a psychiatrist, a man that can help others solve their problems, but still wasnt able to fix himself. The book starts with him and his friend Helen talking about his ex, who he found having sex with another man in their bed. He and Carl had been together for over 4 years and Simon was sure they would be together forever and have a family. Simon always wanted a family, he never had a real one, he grew up in foster-care.
When he finds his boyfriend with another man he is destroyed and doesnt know what to do. He sees his dreams crumble and is sure that he will never have a family.

He doesnt want to think anymore, but just have fun and so he decides to go to a gay bar. There he is sure no one will try to flirt with him, he thinks he is ugly and not good enough, but at least he will not be alone. Well he is wrong, he catches Owen's attention.

Owen is in the same bar trying to find his next one night-stand, his dragon wants to push him to mate and sire, but he doesnt want to.

Centuries ago Owen had been mated, a choise made by the Oracles, not a mate his dragon had chosen by himself. He had cared for Friedric and their unborn baby, so when the man had died trying to give birth to their son and the baby hadnt survived,he had vowed to never get someone else pregnant again.

When he sees Simon he cant stop thinking about the fact that he wants the man for himself. This is the pull. Simon is his mate, something that Owen's dragon understands but the human part of the man still doesnt agree with.

The attraction btw them is strong and Simon does something unusual for him, he asks the other man to come home with him.
They have sex. The scene is really hot but at the same time ridiculous. Who would have sex without a condom with a man he just met?

Owen too was an asshole, he knows that Simon could be an omega and get pregnant, but he doesnt care, he just wants to have sex and it doesnt make any sense.....few pages before he was thinking about Friedric and how he didnt want someone else to die like him... bah.

Owen thinks that what happened btw them was only a one night-stand, so when he goes to Dr. Prichard's office for his appointment, he is shocked to find out that his doctor is Simon.
Simon tries to be professional and the 2 start their session, but soon the human understands that Owen doesnt want to talk about his past and just wants to leave, so he tells Owen that he will help him pass the test asking him only the questions that he will find there. Owen agrees, since he doesnt want to lose his job. Only 6 sessions and he will be free.

While we see Owen trying to resist the mating pull and act like what happened with Simon was only casual sex, we also see the human start having strange dreams. In these nightmares he is Owen (also if he doesnt know it yet) and is seeing his past. One of the worst scene is when Owen's father abandons he and his brothers telling them that he cant feed all of them and that only the one that will survive the winter will be is real son. At start the brothers work together, but in the end their dragon's instinct are too strong and they end up fighting each other to survive. Owen is the last one standing.

I wanted to understand why Simon was able to see Owen's past, we read that maybe he is empathic, but we dont know why or how he become like this.

Owen meets Simon again at Cara's sixth birthday party. Cara is Shane and Liam's daughter and Owen really loves her. He is a little envious of the fact that Liam found happiness and at the same time he knows that one day Liam will lose Shane also if the man doesnt want to think about it. That day is still far away sure, and Shane is expecting their 2nd child, but no one can stop the course of nature. Damn this was really sad, i still hope that the author will tell us that an human mating a dragon becomes immortal bcs otherwise...holy s***.

Anyway back to the story.

Owen is shocked to see Simon at the party and the human doesnt know what to do. In the end they act like adults and try to ignore their issue and just party. Some time later they also find the time to kiss, talk and agree on the fact that maybe what happened btw them wasnt only casual sex and that they both want more.

Walking into Simon's office the next day, Owen still doesnt know what he really wants from the human. He knows that his dragon thinks that Simon is his mate, but he never believed in fairytails. They start the session, but soon Owen tells him he wants to talk about yestarday and tries to explain why he acted like that. He doesnt expect Simon to tell him that he knows he is a dragon shifter or the fact that the man is reliving his past in his dreams.

The session is almost over when Simon gets suddenly sick. Owen understands that the man could be pregnat and tells him he will come to his apartment later to talk with him about something.

When later that night Simon finds out about the fact that he could be pregnant, he is shocked but happy, he always wanted a family. He still thinks that Owen was an asshole for not telling him that this was a possibiliy, but he already loves this child. Simon tells him that he doesnt need to be part of this if he doesnt want to, but Owen replies that he will not leave him or their unborn child. They make love and Owen claims him with the bite.

Few hours later, Owen is watching Simon sleep near him, he should feel only happiness but he cant forget about what happened to Friedric. Is 3 in the morning, but he needs someone to talk to and decides to call Ivan.

They meet soon after and Owen explains to him what is plaguing him. Ivan advises him to go and ask the Oracles what will happen.

The Oracle tells him that Simon isnt his mate and that the human will die like Friedric. Owen doesnt know that the one talking to him isnt the real Oracle but one of his old enemies who came back to life and is seeking revenge (One of Anton's friend). He almost loses his breath and the pain puts him on his knees. He is now sure that Simon will die and he cant do anything to save him.

When Simon comes back to his apartment after his work he is surprised to find Owen w8 for him. The man left him few hours ago without explanation but here he is with flowers and baby items greeting him. Simon wants to run and hug him but his mind tells him that this isnt the real Owen.

Simon doesnt have the time to run away, the entity pulls out a vial and uncaps it and the human passes out.

When the real Owen arrives at the apartment he soon understand that something happened and start to search for his mate. Tracking the scent he finally finds Simon and the person who kidnapped him.

Like Anton, this woman named Sabitha came back to life to get her revenge (how they do this? and why these dragons have these powers like change form etc...? boh...)

The battle btw them is really short, thank god bcs i was getting annoyed...
Owen is able to kill her (again) and free his mate.

In the epilogue, we see Simon, months later, giving bith to their daughter in the hospital. Owen is near him holding his hand, and when they see the baby they name her Rosa. Soon later Owen shows her to their friends w8 in the near room.

He is finally happy and not scared of the future.

I really wish there will be a 3rd book about Ivan and that the author will explain somethig more about the dragons, their powers and their mates, but i already know that i will not find my answers.

Owen Davies carries a lot of baggage from his past. It has begun to impede his job as a fireman. It has gotten to the point that his captain has ordered him to get a psyc eval.

Simon Prichard has just been through a nasty break up. What he doesn't need now is an attraction to his new patient, a fireman with obvious issues.

Once again, I have found this story to be great fun. The world here is fascinating, and I find all the characters to be likable in spite of obvious flaws that seem to go along with being dragons.

I know that the editing police are out there jumping on everything they see. What I have to say is don't let that stop you from enjoying this book. They are minor in this story. If you can't get past that too bad, you are missing out. So my advice editing police, go arrange your kitchen drawers, that should keep you busy for a long time.

On to number 3!

Lame and poorly researched.

The author knows nothing about psychiatrists not even that they are medical doctors.

The story development is poor.
The villain just springs into existence 90% through the book.

Who invites their psychiatrist to their six year old little girl's birthday party?

A few typos here and there but not too bad. I am usually fine with multiple POV but this one just drove me a tiny bit crazy. Because of the connection between Simon and Owen, a lot of things were repeated and became redundant. If they were separated more and felt like two different people it would have been better. Then just as you're getting into what you're reading, the chapter ends and you spend the first half of the next chapter reading the same stuff but from someone else's viewpoint.
*SPOILER ALERT*
The ending with Sabitha makes no sense. Why would she cause problems for Owen and then only make it appear she killed Simon? By doing so, she caused her death and the whole time Simon was fine. I understand the need for a HEA but it just seemed so ridiculous to me. If she really wanted to hurt Owen, she would have killed Simon. Or at the very least there should have been some crazy, convoluted plan as to why she wasn't hurting him.

Overall, I did still enjoy the read. There were some flaws but they may just come down to personal taste. I do enjoy books by Wolf Specter and will continue to read from this author.

Loved the idea of a one-night-stand-turned-therapist but I feel like it could have been played up a bit more.

Good ideas, meh execution for me. I feel like you could tell it's from 2015. Just small off-handed remarks like:
"I'd end up with a long list of things that prevent me from having these casual encounters that seem to be the staple of the out and proud gay man's life" (Loc 294)

Don't have any quotes that stuck out to me unless it's something like "You're hear about your mate." (Loc 1951)

NSFW infos:
One out, gay man (30-ish)
One dragon
strict top/bottom dynamic
surprise omega

Another good story! Owen was well developed and his relationship with Simon was fun to watch unfold. My only gripe is that the ending felt rushed. We had this build up with the illusions and misdirection, but it's a fairly quick and clean battle and death for the villain. I would have liked to know more about Sabitha. On to Ian's story.

This book was very enthralling and it had me totally immersed in the story. I love dragons and I love romance, fated mates, and lots of passion and this book had it all, including, unfortunately for the characters, horrifying memories and nightmares that were overcome through the love and support of each other. It took some time but the happy ending truly warmed my heart. Excellent.

This one made me more angry than the first book! I wish I could have rated it higher, because I enjoyed the story. However, they introduce a character at the end as a villain, and you have no clue where she comes from, or what relevance she has to the mail chracter. Also, what a poor ending, again. It makes feel unresolved, rushed, when so much more could have been written.

I kind of like the hookup ends up being someone important trope. Though this wasn’t insta love, it was insta lust. There is a lot of darkness in Owen’s past that was difficult. There is some action and we see Liam and Shane again. It was enjoyable, but not outstanding. There were several editing errors that stood out and distracted. Overall good for a quick read.

I like it, not as much as the first. I especially liked the dominance Owen showed. But the fact that he didn’t immediately told about the pregnancy really angered me, Simon could have harm the fœtus without meaning to.

I really tried with these two. I had high hopes for this series but the enemies seem to come out of left field and there really isn’t any build up. Also I hate the coming back from the dead thing. I didn’t really like Owen and Simon was too weak to be burdened with carrying the whole story.

A good sequel

The second in the series where the existence of dragons is now in the public domain but not every dragon wants to be known. In fact being a dragon is not all that it's made out to be; with longevity comes a long memories and not all of these are good. Unfortunately, Owen's are catching up with him even in his waking hours and affecting his performance at work as a fireman ( go figure) and it is also the reason he eschews seeking a meaningful relationship. Meeting Simon challenges the walls he has built around himself but also suggests another way of being.
Although, this book can be read as a standalone, it is best appreciated if read in order so that the links with secondary characters are better understood, as well as dragons in this world.
This book has two main characters with a lot of chemistry as well as baggage and you are rooting for them to work things out. Owen's memories are heartfelt and you enter the darkness with him.
Not an oversimplified m/m paranormal read.

Spectacular! This series has really been a new high for Wolf. The connection and passion between Owen and Simon just leaps off the page. The heat level just from the kissing is incendiary. Owen's haunted by his past which is returning to his mind and dreams for the first time in ages. The last thing he wants to do (much like most of us) is to confront those memories and fears. For someone with his history can standard therapy help? I loved the way Simon's role in Owen's life is constantly morphing--hookup, therapist, lover, more? Each step of the way in their intimacy, something from Owen's past intrudes. I was racing through the pages toward the end, afraid, unsure, knotted up. The ending/epilogue was highly satisfying. It was also good to get a peek at Liam, Shane, and Cara again. I can't wait for Ivan's story!

Owen is having problems. His boss sends him to a psychiatrist, who happens to be the guy he had unprotected sex with the night before. And yes, you guessed it. Simon is pregnant. Although the couple do not realize this immediately. They try to be professional. So no sex. Owen does need psychiatric help. He mind is being manipulated by an old enemy. In the end everything is resolved and there is a HFN. Again this book had only 2 sex scenes, which is way too little. And like the previous book, this is a HFN, not a HEA. Simon's life expectancy is still that of a human, so in a couple of decades he will die and leave Owen alone. And in a few hundred years, Owen's dragon will want to mate and reproduce again. This is not a HEA.

This is the second book in the Wildfire Series and is loosely connected with the events of the first book. WE find ourselves with one of the friends of the character in the first book. He's a firefighter who had a horrifying vision from his past while at work, which ended up endangering his crew. He is ordered by his boss to seek a counselor. Deciding to go out drinking he stumbles into a one-night stand that gives him more than he bargained for. Not only can he not stop thinking about the man he learns that he is also the person who was assigned to be his therapist.

Both this book and the first one have quite a bit of fluff and then over the top danger related to the involvement of the dragon shifters and their problems. An overall fun read for a lazy afternoon.

So I hate reviewing books like this cause the only reason I read it to begin with was for a book challenge criteria. This is not my genre and I have never read anything like it.

There were several grammatical errors...words left out of sentences for example and I could never connect with the MCs

I suppose if your into dragon shifters and mm romance w mpreg maybe you'll like this it just not my cup of tea...sorry.

Trials of Past Errors.

Two men tied to their own pasts meet and try to find their way forward. For Simon it is the betrayal of a lover and a youth feeling unwanted and unloved. For Owen, a comparable sad beginning but a past deed that he fights to overcome. Add to the mix a malevolent entity and you have Ebon Fire! Well written characters and a good hunk of ... make this book very enjoyable to read.

Liking the dragons!

Simon is a sweet heart that has been hurt one too many times. But yet though it all he still, wants to help people and Owen really needs his help. Owen not want a mate but his dragon is not having any of that. It's just Owen's luck that his therapist is his mate and one night stand. Now Owen has to figure out what's bring on the vision and bad dreams before he loses his mate and child.

Ok read....

This was an ok read for me.... I guess I didn't really care for the plot really...I guess it was suppose to be a psychological thriller thing I guess.. it was just mind games being played but it fell short for me... I wish it was more ....I will read the next book because I want to learn more about Ivan...I just hope his story is better....

All in all it is another good book by Wolf Specter. I enjoyed the MC's in the book as well. The beginning for me was a little slow, but it soon picked up pace. The only flaw I found with the book were spelling and grammar issues.

Some confusion

I thought dragons make someone omega when they find their mate. Even so Simon as an empath is perfect for Owen who needs someone who can understand and accept him.
