Dark. Obsessive. Damaged. And yet… impossible to put down.
Ashbourne House continues the twisted tale of Guy Spencer and Jane Hartwell in Victorian London. If you're into morally grey heroes, emotional power plays, and the slow unraveling of trauma and obsession, this book is going to consume you.
Guy is not your average romantic lead. He’s manipulative, controlling, and at times outright cruel. But he’s also broken, haunted, and completely in love with Jane—the girl he’s been obsessed with since childhood. The problem? He’s spent years turning that obsession into a cold, calculated need for revenge.
Jane, gentle and sheltered, becomes the target of that revenge when she and her father are welcomed into Ashbourne House. What she doesn’t know is that Guy orchestrated every step to get her under his control. He wants her as his “payment,” but what he truly craves is something far more complicated: love, power, absolution.
Their relationship is anything but easy. It’s dark, coercive, and often uncomfortable to read—but at the same time, layered with vulnerability and longing. Jane slowly begins to understand the boy behind the man, the pain behind the cruelty, and the twisted love behind the rage.
This section was some smut and not much progression, mostly more scene setting. Some introduction of other characters. There were some fun scenes but it always comes back to a guy who is an abusive jerk with no redeemable qualities because of his oh so traumatic background of *checks notes* being ignored by his mother due to his resemblance to his biological father - because it is impossible for anyone to enjoy degredation fantasies without having a traumatic back story (and his is patheticly weak as traumatic back stories goes, especially in comparison to some of the other characters who have far worse and chose not to go all grim-dark-woe-is-me).
I continued to enjoy reading this story, even though Jane cries entirely too much when she obviously has been in love with Guy her whole life and wants to be in a relationship with him.
