花より男子 [Hana Yori Dango] #14

Boys Over Flowers: Hana Yori Dango, Vol. 14

Rate this book
Tsukasa's raucous behavior at Tsukushi's junior high school class reunion has her fed up with him once again. Tuskasa is crushed by this but is too stubborn to apologize. Later, Tuskushi is assaulted by two schoolgirls and then rescued by a "young nerdy boy" who turns out to be Junpei, a famous male model who has been dying to meet Tsukushi! Her dumb luck then gets her involved in a photo shoot with him, and she ends up on the cover of a famous magazine. This causes quite a scene at school, but not nearly as big a scene as when Tsukasa finds the two of them together!

Yōko Kamio (神尾葉子) is a popular Japanese manga artist and writer. She is most famous for Boys Over Flowers (花より男子, Hana Yori Dango?), for which she received the Shogakukan Manga Award in 1996. Her work has been translated and distributed in Asia, Europe, and North America.

Yōko Kamio readily admits that she had no intention of becoming a professional manga artist when she was young. Kamio originally went to secretarial school, but her love of drawing soon led her astray. She then eventually entered the professional mangaka field in 1989. In the following years, Kamio published Suki Suki Daisuki, Ano Hi ni Aitai, and Meri-san no Hijitsu in Margaret before she finally created Hana Yori Dango in 1992.

The Hana Yori Dango manga became established relatively quickly in Japan. Many people commended Kamio for her realistic portrayal of high school life and everyday violence through the Hana Yori Dango series. Although Kamio was initially surprised by the confessions of high school violence stated in fan letters, she realized that Tsukushi's fiery character served as a role model for much of Japan's youth and helped others cope with school violence.

Kamio watched as the success of Hana Yori Dango's 1992 début followed through with many more months on the best-sellers list. Voice CDs by SMAP and a live action movie about Hanadan charted the series success in the mid-1990s. By 1995, an animated series for Hana Yori Dango was already in progress and Kamio had also helped pick main leads for the anime show.

Hana Yori Dango ran in the Japanese Margaret magazine as well as the Korean Wink. The series has also been published in Japanese, Chinese, Cantonese, Thai, Korean, French, and English. The anime series has been broadcasted in Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Italy, and has also been licensed and released in the United States. Additionally, it was also recreated in a Game Boy Color game (only released in Japan) during the summer of 2001. With its ever-increasing popularity, Hana Yori Dango was then made into a popular live action TV series in Taiwan titled Meteor Garden. The manga series finally ended in Margaret's August 2003 issue, and the 36th tankōbon which included the Akira special "Night of the Crescent Moon" was released in January 2004 as the manga's final volume.

While Yoko Kamio initially wanted Hanazawa Rui to be the main hero of Hana Yori Dango, due to the outstanding personality of Domyoji Tsukasa (and Domyoji also becoming more popular than Rui) she changed the hero role to Domyoji.

Despite Hana Yori Dango's success, Kamio had originally planned to end the series by Spring 2000. However, in February 2000, at a mangaka conference in Taipei, Taiwan Kamio announced that she would continue writing Hana Yori Dango. At one point, she got so wrapped up in the Hana Yori Dango storyline, that she confessed to having dreams about Doumyouji. Of course, she said that "Falling in love with a character that I created is just disgusting..."

how many love interests are there going to be before the main character realizes she doesn't need any of these problematic men. the only characters that aren't completely problematic and spit on bigotry are the other 2 members of F4 (not Rui or Domyoji).

UPDATE: I take it back.

Again, having seen the drama the plot twist that the model guy is trouble is lost on me. I did notice that the modeling picture that gets her in trouble with her classmates is soooo much more modest in the book than in the drama lol. In the book they're just hugging. In the drama she's not wearing pants. Big diff.
But again, I'm so upset about these stupid kids flip flopping on bullying her! Haven't they figured out that eventually the F4 are going to change their minds and like her again?!
Life lesson from this series; don't trust the hot guys who're helping you. Unless that hot guy is also delivering food. Then maaaaybe.

In Volume 14, the series leans heavily into emotional turmoil, with Tsukushi confronting both internal doubts and external pressures. The romantic tension remains the heart of the narrative, but the repetition of conflict patterns slows the sense of progress. Some side characters step up to provide levity and fresh dynamics, preventing the tone from becoming too heavy. The artwork continues to be a standout, vividly capturing the intensity of each confrontation and the softer, fleeting moments in between.

Bro... wtf. Just wtf. Why do I keep doing this to myself. How does this relationship manage to keep getting more and more dysfunctional. I have so many questions, namely: why do I keep reading this? And how many love interests are we going to go through? I feel like I need to start a diagram just to keep track.

That being said, it’s interesting to see how the manga differs from the show.

There’s a new character in this volume, Junpei! Makino surely meets a lot of good looking, famous and unique guys. There have been so many male characters coming in between her and Tsukasa. Hmmm...

So much violence! Tsukasa is a classic abusive boyfriend, and he’s not the only one beating up on Tsukushi. This story is a classic, very popular and long running. Yet these young people behave like animals. Are there no police in Japan? Or is this behavior so unthinkable IRL that it’s supposed to be funny, like The Three Stooges? I’m going to continue because I’m hooked now, but I’m really close to quitting this series.

This was not a bad volume. I quite liked how the story continued.
I do like that the series has a summary at the beginning of each volume. I've not been reading side panels from the author in this series, mainly because they don't really interest me, I just like the story.

Also, ¿cuántos intereses románticos va a tener Tsukushi?

Another guy falling for our heroine. *eyeroll* As far as they go, not bad. I would really like them to just end up as friends, but I have a feeling he's just another person using her for his own end. Bah. When will it end?

Bref... Je suis dépitée.

To start with, I'd like to say that I do love this series, but collecting it is a bit of a labor of love. The story (that of various love triangles & class struggles) is a sweet one, but a little repetitive. It's great... the first few times around, but eventually even the biggest fan finds him or herself sighing a bit in annoyance & wondering why Tskushi doesn't come to grips with her feelings or why Tsukasa doesn't try to be a little more tender.

In this volume the love interest du-jour is a "nerdy" boy who rescues Tskushi from the latest jealous schoolgirls who dislike her relationship with F4. She then later discovers that he's a famous model & gets photographed with him. Tsukasa of course gets jealous & causes a scene, excetera excetera. This whole plot would be a lot more interesting... if it wasn't that it's happened in various guises already. Just about every guy Tskushi meets falls for her and ends up being rich and/or famous. It's fun, but like I said... it gets a little old after a while.

Would I recommend this? For the most part. Many aren't going to like this series enough to really want to collect all 30-odd volumes, but some are. To those I'd recommend this. To others... not so much. I will say one thing though, this series is great in small doses. As long as you remember that, the series is golden.

I love the cover of this volume!

Ugh... and there goes Tsukasa reminding us all what a spoiled little brat he is. I can't even feel sorry for the guy that the girl he loves won't be with him... he deserves it. I really hope in the end Tsukushi doesn't pick him... his violent, immature behavior SHOULD NOT be rewarded and in fact he should suffer the heartache for the rest of his life. But you know... I have doubts she'll pick him in the end because even though she told him they're suffocating her, she can't stay away from him... and instead of seeing what a psycho he is when he doesn't get his way, all she sees is the sweet little things he does when he's not being a psycho (hmm... I'm sure any level headed woman could see where this type of relationship is going -_-) Especially when the other characters are being like "You idiot! Can't you see he loves you!" Uh, no! That does not excuse is douche bag behavior and Tsukushi shouldn't excuse it because of that either!

But yay for Jun!! He reminds me a bit of Kazuya! At least there are a few boy characters in these books whose eyes I don't want to claw out.

There was something in the way all of the characters came together that I found irresistibly compelling about this series. It did remind me a lot of Ouran while I was reading it and maybe that is why I liked it so much. Tsukushi is an interesting protagonist, I loved when she started taking action and sticking up for herself.

While I wasn’t overly fond of the artwork style I was able to get past it because I my love for the storyline. This is an honest story with twists and turns, ups and downs, but then again that is real life.

I would really recommend watching the anime too!

I have to say that it was worth it for both Tsukasa's confession and Tsukushi's telling him how conflicted he makes her. Doumyouji may be the prototype for the terrible shoujo lead, but Kamio tries to show us his emotional immaturity as a reason for his behavior, and it comes through best in this volume. (Thus far.)

Some intense things happeneing in this Vol. We got another new character who's in love with Makino - what a show, but the guy is weird and still abit a mystery.
Tho I still like Domyoji and he's strange way to shows his feelings.
