Hiroya Oku (奥浩哉 Oku Hiroya, born September 16, 1967 in Fukuoka, Fukuoka) is a mangaka who is the creator of Gantz, Zero-One and HEN, all of which have been serialized in Young Jump. He has finished working on his most renowned manga, Gantz, which began in July 2000. His manga often contain explicit violence and gore, as well as sexual situations.
He won the second prize of the Youth Manga Awards in 1988, under the penname Yahiro Kuon.
He designed a character for Namco Bandai's Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 fighting game, Soulcalibur IV named Shura.
Hiroya is teasing us by not showing how muscle rider beat up the aliens. The manga is getting better story wise. Now there is more mystery and potential to the story. Who are these aliens? who know about gantz?? and what is their relationship with the vampires??? There is so much to know, and so much i wish to know as soon as possible, if this mission ends without explanation to anything with big question marks over the survivors heads, it would suck!
So these monsters can take form of another person. These aliens are vicious and ready to kill anything that stands in their way. This volume has a lot of surprises, some great fights, a few sad deaths, and the return of those vampire fucks. This is all leading to some big events but this one is crazy on the action and some major deaths.
Good: The fights are intense, the deaths are fucked up, the stakes are on the rise, and the dialog is a ton of fun. This remains super fun and exciting.
Bad: Nothing much. Maybe the odd sense of having the girl not really do much, or maybe she did, and they kind of skipped her fight.
Overall a great, high speed, fucked up volume. When Gantz goes all out it's super fun. A 4 out of 5.
Remember last issue when I said they’d make up for the lack of gratuitous nudity in this one? Well, call me Nostradamus, because that mighty morphing alien sex monster had something like fifteen boobs. 😅
Finally some genuine horror!! Also, this volume was great. Muscle Man Rider and the little kid are such an awesome duo. Muscle Man Rider is also hot as shit <3 and I love seeing Oku flex his artistic muscles with those really cinematic hand to hand fighting scenes. This series is just a lot of fun.
That's more like it. The aliens in this volume are way better than in the last few volumes, being exceptionally weird and nasty, plus they are deliberately organizing, and luring the Gantz players into splitting up to cover more ground - a classic mistake. Reika finally gets to be a bad-ass, instead of just eye candy, and the injection of the vampires into the proceedings makes things more violent if also a bit more confusing. Some of the pacing of this volume is odd, with single page jump cuts making things a bit hard to follow in a couple instances. But the payoff with the alien that kept forcing its way into different players, destroying them from the inside, and then emerging in a different form made it worth while. This volume delivers the gore and the weird.
This was a great volume and I appreciate the risks the story is taking but I'll admit that the pace and rhythm fell a little since volume 16. I hope the next volume picks things up.
Synopsis: Gantz tells the story of a teenager named Kei Kurono, among others, who die but find themselves brought back in perfectly healthy bodies and forced to participate in a "game" where they must hunt down and kill aliens.
Review: I almost gave up on Gantz several times, but now that I've read it all the way to the end, I'm glad I stuck with it. The beginning is dragged down by repulsive and unlikable characters, a messily paced story, unnecessary sexualization and gratuitous violence without much substance. As it progresses, however, the character development becomes pretty incredible and the growing threat of the enemies feels truly well done. Once the real enemies are revealed, it's mind-blowing how the series had been secretly foreshadowing their arrival from the very beginning.
Although it takes a while, some really good characters are introduced later on in the series and they're the ones that made me want to read to the end. Some characters that were absolutely unbearable in the beginning became polar opposites of their original selves and even made me sympathize with them quite a bit. The protagonist Kei for example, I hated him with all my heart for the first third of the series, he became progressively more likable in the second third of the story and then he evolved into one of the most memorable, unlikely heroes I've ever seen in this storytelling medium throughout the final third. The last third of the series is unbelievably terrifying with some of the most gruesome and disgusting battle/survival scenes in the history of fiction. It's much more bearable and intense in the final third because this time the violence and horror is happening to people we actually care about instead of a bunch of unlikable nobodies.
The final third of the story is what made me feel so glad that I didn't give up on this series. It had me on the edge of my seat more times than I can recall. There are a ton of chapters but they're very short and full of action which makes the series a quick read despite having almost 400 chapters. So even though the first third of the story was kinda bad in my opinion, it doesn't last for long and the payoff that comes after it's over truly impressed me. It's a flawed, thrilling and horrifying action series that takes a while to kick off. When it finally kicks off, however, it kicks off extremely hard.
Ok, things are picking up again after a poor run. The new oni aliens are pretty intimidating and the whole mission thing is escalating beyond just a small area. There's a huge number of aliens this time and bystanders and pedestrians are getting caught up in the confrontation. Reika gets her chance to shine, but off-screen for some reason. So Earth is looking at some sort of alien infiltration, which I can get behind, but there's obviously a disconnect to the aliens in the earlier missions. I suspect this infiltration idea wasn't really fleshed out very well yet earlier on, so that's understandable.
I like this volume, but one thing I really dislike though: why are the vampires friendly with the aliens? If they know that the "black suits" also attack aliens, why do the vampires still think of them as "vampire hunters"? The vampire group is such a vague and aimless group that you can just paint them as a different alien species and there would zero impact on the story whatsoever.
They were sent to Ikebukuro to hunt down the oni aliens. The aliens disguised as a human and apparently, they know about Gantz's existence. For the first time, the aliens make their public appearance. There are so many aliens as they could be free if they cleared the mission. They split up to kill all the aliens around Ikebukuro.
But, the vampires also there. They want to pick a fight with the leader of the Gantz team (the vampires call them The Hunters). Sakurai and Sakata confront the oni alien that have fire power. Sakurai being killed by the alien but Sakata managed to kill the alien. Kaze also confronts one of the oni aliens.
Gantz/17 shows another episode of the Gantz missions where a group of deceased humans fight a group of aliens. Although it seems as if the redundancy would make this boring, this is a better than average episode. The human group battles on.
Things are getting out of hand!! Such a fast phased story. Vampires, shape shifting aliens, hand-to-hand combat, one sided love. What not?! Awesome, really enjoying this manga!!
