Being head cheerleader doesn't exactly prepare you for life during the apocalypse, and it's a dangerous learning curve...
Sixteen-year-old Jane wakes up to a desperate text from her best friend—the dead are walking around outside her window. Jane's parents are in New York for the weekend, and Jane is completely alone.
After a gruesome personal tragedy, Abby rescues Jane, and the girls flee the town they grew up in, hoping to find a place unaffected by the dead. Abby’s family lake house seems like the only choice, but their beacon of hope is three States away, separated by a sea of reanimated death. Reaching it will be anything but easy.
Nothing really new or unique but this was recommended and thought I’d give it a shot, the pace is good, the storyline has the usual run of bad luck and adrenaline pumping moments but the most annoying character award goes to Jane, I’m hoping as the series movies along she pulls her shit together, zips her mouth and her annoying comments because now I’ve started I’m kind of keen to see if they make it to the cabin in the woods and if she’s united with her family.
I planned on reading this book all week, but I ended up finishing it in less than 12 hours. I basically got tossed into the story that Megan's created and couldn't bring myself to leave it.
This is an excellent read! I don't read zombie books too terribly often, but this book had my attention from page one! I tend to find the beginnings of some novels very slow, but this book started off with a bang and ended with another. I definitely didn't have to wait long to get thrown into the action.
The characters are well thought out, and there is never a dull moment. Not once while reading, did I find the writing to be boring or repetitive at times like I do many books.
Also, let me assure you, for as young as the main character is, she is not nearly as childish and annoying as most characters her age in novels are. THANKFULLY. No one likes reading about an annoying brat.
The ending had me wishing there were more pages to read! I wasn't ready for it to end! Needless to say, I'll definitely be picking up book 2 in April! This book definitely keeps you at the edge of your seat. Highly recommend!
Eh, this started out okay, but as the book went on I found Jane increasingly annoying. I liked Silas, although I didn't really care about the other characters. Not sure if I'll continue with this series of not.
When I first began this book and realized it was about a teenage cheerleader and her friends trying to survive a zombie apocalypse I didn't really expect much. Thankfully I was very wrong. The characters are distinct, well thought out individuals who are forced to make hard, mature decisions mostly on instinct or luck, yet the longer they survive the more they learn and the better they become at surviving in a world where even the most well trained are falling all around them. Realistic reactions and emotions make these young people feel more real and their situations much more plausible. I look forward to reading the next book!
I really like this one the characters were very likable and the struggle and loss and everything they went through just was a good zombie book. Really mad because I said up all night to finish and clicked on second book to buy and its not out until April when I thought it was already out...so pre-ordered it and now waiting for it to come out.
Finally the scared girl gets her stuff together! I absolutely really enjoyed this story. I liked the gore factor and how it was horror with some little fan girl there due to some romance. Overall I liked Silas the best and feel in love with Ryan due to his concern nature.
I love zombie novels with female heroines, so I was excited when I started this. it didn't disappoint. fun, fast paced, action, ZOMBIES. what more can you ask from a book?
I downloaded this for free some weeks ago and decided to give it a try. Despite being in a mild reading slump, I found myself picking this up almost every night and reading a couple of chapters. The fast pace, high stakes and never knowing what was going to happen next, all made the story enjoyable. The scare factor with the creepy zombies delivered and I did have trouble sleeping a couple of nights due to hearing every little noise in the apartment.
What I didn't like and a big reason for the low rating, was the heavy language, including one instance of the F word. Normally, I would have DNF it about then, but as I stated, this was a book I couldn't put down while in a reading slump.
I wasn't a fan of the insta-romance between 16-year-old Jane and 19-year-old Ryan and found their relationship a bit cringy. Jane was actually quite annoying.
I did not know this was part of a series. I kept reading mostly for answers about the whereabouts of Jane's parents and was jolted by the cliffhanger. Due to the language, I won't be continuing this and sadly will not be getting the answers I'd hoped for.
*Not recommended for readers who don't like a lot of blood, scary images, language and violence. *
If you don't know me by now, I am always on the hunt for zombie reads. And I recently stumbled upon this one. I had seen it before in my searching but for some reason I bypassed it. Now I wish I hadn't.
The story itself is YA as the MC is a 16yr old girl. I cannot really call her a heroine just yet, as she is thrown into the zombie apocalypse green to knowledge of all things undead. But her future looks promising in some ways. She is learning and learning fast.
And even though there is a guy and emotions are high, she understands this is the end of the life as she knew it. She knows love is a feeling that may not have real estate in the apocalypse. And for someone that is 16, that says a lot about her.
So far, book one has been a fantastic start to a new to me series. I look forward to seeing what all goes down and if Jane finds her loved ones. 5 Stars!
Oh god, where should I begin. The book itself was good. I mean, throw in some zombies and I’m down. The main character, god oh might. Annoying, brat. Death is all I wish for her. You know, like zombies tearing at her flesh sort of death.
The time line was also messed up. Less than a week and the government was gone. Really? I would like to think my boys in arm could last for much longer than that. Also, insta-love is my pet peeve. Really, what’s so special about this brat that everyone wants to follow her to their deaths.
So I almost want to go down a star for that semi- cliffhanger and because Abby is annoying. BUT, Abby is annoying because she's a 16 year old girl and so the author actually did a decent job of making her realistic. So even though I wanted to shake her towards the end, it made sense. I will definitely read the next one.
There are a lots of twists to the plot. The characters are firmly introduced and are fleshed out. I enjoyed the story, but like other avid readers, the errors in language, while not numerous, are enough to have to stop and try to figure out the sentence. While violent, because of ... zombies ..., it would be OK for 14+.
Excellent book. I found it to be very well written, with interesting characters that I found myself pulling for. Now I can't wait to read episode 2 of the story!
The characters are fairly well developed as well as the scenes. It’s a typical runnin’ and gunnin’ apocalypse book, sticking to the standard recipe but it’s well done.
I'm kind of obsessed with zombie / apocalyptic books right now and I'm so thrilled I found this series ... I am terribly in love with Ryan and I may even have a soft spot for Silas
Good story and well done. Tells a tale of a young woman who only wants her parents and to be safe. With friends of old and new friends she goes on a search.
I enjoyed this book.I stayed up till the wee hour to finish it. Jane got on my nerves a little .But she’s doing good for a teen. Can’t wait to read the next book.
I am probably going to get the sequel, but that doesn't mean I think this book doesn't have issues. Cause boy....it does. I love zombie books. I love them a lot. And I had fun with this one.
Cons:
The lead is stupid. She does lots of things that should get her killed. If she wasn't the protagonists I'm sure she would be dead by now. Running into situation screaming when you can see zombies everywhere is stupid. I don't care if you are worried about your friends. If you are dead you can't help them.
Silencers do not work that way. Yes, they bring down the volume level to a point where they probably won't damage your ears, but silenced guns are LOUD! We are talking like 100db-130db here. Safe volume for ears is like 140db. That is loud. Very loud. And since that is a big point in the story it shows how little knowledge this author has about guns.
Pros:
I like the side characters. The side characters tend to be smart and resourceful (even though the authors ignorance about guns means some of her characters would actually be stupid for being a gun owner who knew so little).
The book takes us to a variety of different places and different experiences which keeps the story progressing and interesting.
Anyway, if you can overlook a lot of factual errors on the authors part then this book could be pretty fun. Like I said I will probably get the sequel book when it comes out so I don't think this book is awful. It just has issues.
I was worried about the lead character being a cheerleader but she's proven quite the heroine I love to read about in my fav type of novels , zombies! And there's some pretty good zombie descriptions in this one . But I love the story line . 2 best friends , a neighbor , and a guy are trying to make it to a cabin. Everyone's lost someone but Jane still hasn't been able to find her parents, who were in New York City when the dead started walking . Sounds like your everyday zombie novel but the writing is really good and the characters are so believable , just everyday people . I think that's what I like most about the book. There's several twists and turns which made me not want to put this book down . I read through it so fast . Can not wait to read book 2! Give it a try I think you'll like it . If you're a zombie fan !
