When immortality came knocking Eliza answered enthusiastically. After sixty-three years, she understands the barb it holds. Her employer, the Man, sends her on a mission to interrogate and kill a family member. The grandson of her cheating ex-husband's union with his mistress turned wife.
Not her blood relation, but the only semblance of a family she has left, Eliza embraces change. Of course, it helps that he is the only living person that knows the location of Shi.
Her immortality hinges on Shi, a drug injected daily to keep her young, vital and living large. Of course only for as long as she does what the Man tells her to do, as long as she is willing to sell her soul to their service.
A spark was kindled in C.F. the first time she read Terrance Dicks' Spacejack and a love for Sci-Fi was born. Never quite satisfied with the endings of her favourite books she wrote her own.
Eventually, C.F. started making up new worlds and characters. Occasionally she still gives a television show or movie a better ending, but creating universes are more fun.
I am giving this book a four star, I am not really a fan of this story but I do like the author's writing style, which makes for a quick read and I think a great job with the characters. The author was able to make the main character Eliza believable and although someone who enters this story with blood on her hands after a murder, still someone who is somehow likable. The story line and the idea behind it are also innovative, which makes this a four star instead of a three. So, I think this author is someone to look at for other genres and interesting reads.
As with all my books, I loved writing it, loved rereading it. As with all such endeavours, there are changes I would implement. But for better or worse Eliza is the way she is as she led me to her story.
Thank you for reading her story and joining us on the ongoing journey of discovery.
I had somewhat of a mixed reception to Shi. On the one hand, I did enjoy the story overall. The premise of the story is a simple one: an immortal hitwoman has to complete tasks in order to receive her daily injections keeping her alive. However, her next assignment is a tricky one: she has to kill the grandson of the man whom she was married to in her previous life. The man whom she suspects cheated on her with his secretary. Now I like the premise of the story and the dialogue between characters is quite fun. Yet, I do feel that the story somewhat suffers towards the middle and end. This is in part because the story begins to feel episodic, with plot points being introduced yet not elaborated on fully. Furthermore, the main character does not feel as a fully realized character as she did in the beginning of the story. Thus, these plot points begin to feel as though they were introduced just to be a twist of sorts. One twist in particular comes so far out from left field that there is no suspense when it is revealed. Thus, it feels more confusing than suspenseful. Finally, the romantic subplot that gets introduce halfway in the story feels rushed. The main character feels like a completely different character when this love interest around and even though she lampshades this by complaining about how he affects her, the story never really builds on this aspect in a meaningful way. The story even suggests that the love interest can read the main character’s mind and yet it is played off in a jocular manner.
Still, I feel that the story is enjoyable for one that is the beginning of a series. While I dislike that the main character feel neutered by the end, I cannot deny that the story does make you feel connected to the character. And while the story does feel rushed and episodic with certain major plot points not being developed and thus feeling as though they were introduced just to be a twist, there are ingredients for an entertaining universe.
I'm giving this book three stars due to it's originality. It is however riddled with spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors from the outset. Once they're fixed I'll happily give it a four star rating. Nice and original plot line, great main character and lots for your imagination to play with. ( Hopefully the errors can be fixed soon as it's a great book almost ruined by it's mistakes)
An interesting idea. The lead character comes across as a self centred individual with few redeeming qualities INITIALLY, only to discover her humanity and make her a more emphatic character looking beyond her own needs. I think this is one of those books you have to be persistent with and get beyond the me, I, myself phase to feel any empathy for the main character. An unusual story that certainly leads one to think What would I do? and How would I react? The final part of the story certainly Leeds you to think the whole thing has been a set up with "The Man" quietly pulling the strings behind the scenes to manipulate his former favourite enforcer / assassin to take a course of action she would now bulk at as she becomes more human and less of the manipulated robot she had previously been. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
