Bit predictable and contrived but an enjoyable read all the same.

It's that time again kids for the book review you never asked for, and this one is going to be a little all over the place.
I liked this book. Shocker, I know, seeming as I always tend to have more complaints than compliments lately when it comes to romance/slice of life novels. But this book started very well, a young woman named Poppy who works on a boat and the adventures of her and skipper Jake as they sail around the Med looking after the next bizarre family who come aboard their vessel.
The Garvies (the family that are staying on the boat) are all but the 'typical' British family: loud, boisterous, velour tracksuits with bad tans and even worse nails. And while the kids are up to no good, the parents are down to earth and just want to sit back and get...well...bladdered?
Personally I loved Ronnie (the mother) the most just for how honest and outspoken she is, a woman after my own heart and possibly one of the only characters who actually sorts shit out and calls it out for what it is.
Having said this, we know where the next part of this review is gonna go...
Yerp, good ole MISUNDERSTANDINGS. Because my good love Ronnie is the one that actually fixes said misunderstanding, because she is the one who sits the fuckers down and tells them to sort it out.
Thank you Ronnie, from all trope haters everywhere. Love you babe.
Now Poppy has a rough time through the course of the book. Her father has a stroke which means she has to head home to take care of him and the family run pub, meaning a replacement for the spot left open by her leaving.
Cue Sophie, quote, 'the hussy', who basically is just a shit who likes to wind people up for her own personal satisfaction?
Awesome, great, we don't like Sophie, remember that.
Now Poppy meets, on accident, the owner of the business herself and skipper Jake work for, a man by the name of Charlie who very early on in the book is labelled as being a playboy.
Now, maybe it is just me, but when a magazine labels someone as a known playboy, it tends to make my spidey senses go weeeee wooo weeee wooo. Charlie was no exception to this, despite seemingly being nice to Poppy.
Stalkerish, yes, but hey, Poppy just brushes this under the rug.
So when stalker boy invites her to boat head office and offers her the job of the lifetime, who is she to pass up so an opportunity without going, hmmmm?
Because that's what I was doing, I was going hmmmmm the entire damn time.
And would you FUCKING know it, the guy then proceeds to be all, 'so when are we fucking then?', and sexually harrasses poor Poppy.
Now, me being me, I would have sued that motherfuckers ass. In fact Poppy's best friend even tells her that what he did to her was sexual harassment.
And what does good ole Poppy do?
BLAME HERSELF AND BELIEVE SHE DID SOMETHING WRONG TO PISS HIM OFF.
To say I sat reading that section with a tight lip and frown would be an understatement. Because, what the fuck? The man FORCED himself onto you, and then you believe you did something wrong and want to apologize to him FOR YOUR BEHAVIOUR.
I was...baffled? Is baffled the correct word here? Baffled at a girl trying to justify a man sexually harassing her?
And later on in the story, who shows up but good ole fuck boy himself? With Sophie (yerp, shit stirring Sophie, that one) on his arm, all the while Sophie tells Poppy that her and Jake slept together. Shit stirring grin all the while she is saying this, bare in mind.
And instead of Poppy thinking hm, so far this Sophie character hasn't given me any reason to believe a word she says, but my friend and love interest Jake has shown no reason to lie to me...I'm gonna believe Sophie!
BECAUSE FUCK LOGIC.
It is only until a year later (yes, a year...) that Ronnie through her mastery of grand scheming- and this being a romance novel and all- that she manages to sit Jake and Poppy down to have them discuss what ACTUALLY happened.
I'm gonna leave this review with a section of the book which I feel best sums my complaint about this novel:
Poppy: But why didn't you tell me the truth?
Jake: Because you wouldn't let me?

Onto the next!

I couldn't relate to either of the main characters. Jake seemed especially dull. I couldn't handle a lifetime with a guy like that.

However, it isn't the usual formulaic romance, so that's a plus.

(I would have given it an extra star, if not for the typical baddies in such romances: the playboy bad guy trying to get to the girl & the bitch sexpot female trying to get to the guy. That was a bit of a bore.)

honestly i almost didn't finish. the beginning was good but the middle is redundant and and amateurish i guess, bordering on childish (the characters, their thoughts, actions).

Not the most captivating read. Still an interesting read about sailing around the Greek Islands, which totally makes me want to go now. I would have liked a lot more character relationship between Poppy and Jake because the only good interesting bit about how they had they're happy ending was in one line, on the last page of the book!

Too me, I don't like it when things happen right at the end. I feel like all I needed to do was read the start of the book and the end of it to enjoy it without wasting my time. I need reassuring events that happen consecutively and evenly paced throughout the book to keep my interest. I mean it is a 'Little Black Dress' book after all and they're supposed to be known for their romantic story plots. A little more romance please?
