Woodward writes about food in a blog she founded in 2012 named Deliciously Ella which was also the title of her first book, published in 2015. Her second book, Deliciously Ella Every Day was released in January 2016. A third book, Deliciously Ella With Friends was released in January 2017. She was an advocate of clean eating but turned against it after a media backlash that questioned its health benefits. Her clean eating series of books was called by The Guardian "arguably the most successful fad diet cookbook series in recent years".

If you have been following my reviews, you may have noticed that I've recently been ploughing through heaps of cookbooks as part of my research for my upcoming cooking course (alright it's really because I have an irrational love of cookbooks).

Before I review this book, it might be worth giving a little background into how I compare/experience cookbooks.

I came across a discussion recently (maybe with Adam Gopnik?) that looked at the different types of cookbooks that's similar to how I break them down too. Some of reference tomes (Harold Mcgee for instance), some focus on technique (typically the ones from famous cooking schools), some are by famous chefs or celebrities, some tell good stories (see my review of Mamushka), some go into detail about nutrition or cooking for a dietary restriction (one of the best I've come across is "how can it be gluten-free" by America's Test Kitchen) and so on.

I tend to look at how I feel a particular book stands out within the category/categories (some span more than one) that is likely to be its objective(s). And this book is roughly a healthy/clean eating (these books often have a before-after author story).

And (ahem) some cookbooks I think are helped by the author being attractive! This is not to disparage Ella's work or story but it's hard to imagine that her blog/book would be as successful if she were a, for want of a better word, minger.

This book has lots of attractive pictures of food (and a much higher percentage of the author than the standard cookbook). The recipes that I've tried were fine (nothing revelatory for but I can see how they may be helpful for people who used to eat badly).

In the main, the recipes are easy. Sometimes the casualness hides the effort involved. Here's an unedited example (a paragraph found within the recipe for Courgette Banana Bread):

"Apple puree is super-simple. Peel and core 20 red apples. Chop into bite sized pieces. Place in a large saucepan with 2cm of water. Cook for 40 minutes, or until very soft, then blend till smooth. Add 3 tablespoons date or maple syrup, or 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon, or both. Store in the fridge for up to 5 days, or freeze in portions."

It's very helpful that it can be frozen and used as a sweetener for various recipes. That part is great. But peeling and coring 20 apples whilst not technically difficult, is going to take a while for someone who doesn't cook that often.

Overall, while the book was fine, I think Anna Jones demonstrates a deeper understanding of how the ingredients work and sets you up to have a go at creating your own delicious food. So I recommend Anna's books ahead of this book if you're after similarish books within the "healthy vegetarian" category.

Updated Review - I notice that I don't gravitate towards this book when I plan my meals for upcoming weeks. I don't find them as exciting as I initially thought so I'm changing my rating to three stars for personal preference. The recipes are a bit on bland side and I prefer mine meals with a bit of kick in flavour.

I thought her first book was okay but I love this second book. The recipes are simple, easy, and reasonable amount of ingredients hence right up my alley. I've already bookmarked handful of recipes to try and tasted and loved the breakfast bar and smoothies (Kale with Chocolate, Yum).

✔️(adv.) a book tied to your ancestry (very much a stretch)

Bookmarked a few recipes! Most *are* too wholefoods-y for my current mood but look delicious. Wish we had a Deliciously Ella deli in Melbs, it would be really successful I think. It would also change the fast-food scene here, and add a bit of a London-esque touch. Her app is also really handy.

OK. Nothing in the book that isn’t online, though if you enjoy looking through other people’s Instagram this might be worth buying. Mine is heading back to the library.

Awesome, vegetarian yet hearty recipes that requires ingredients I typically have. Can’t wait to try more of these recipes. We’ve already added a few into our regular rotation. Highly recommend if you’re looking to add a few meatless dishes to your repertoire.

Yeah, this one didn't work any better for me than her first book did. I think her stuff is just not my style at all. Plus I find it sort of weird that her books have soooooo many pictures of her in them. She's cute, but I'm way more interested in food. Although not really this food, so I guess it doesn't really matter. Glad so many others are loving it though!

YMMV: I cook a lot and I’m currently going through a bunch of Ottolenghi recipes so this book was a bit… bland for my taste.

I purchased this on a whim at a Waterstones because I felt stuck in my cooking after an exhausting first half of 2022 with a toddler and a lot of work. I have been following Ella for a while on Instagram and listened to some of her podcasts. Her having two kids made me think that this book could help me on uninspired nights.

In the end, I think it’s probably good for beginners either in cooking and/or healthy eating, but it’s not much use to me - I much prefer the Hemsley sisters’ books which seem to speak a bit more about nutrition and have more diverse tastes.

And as much as I recognise her talent/business sense and luck (good looks etc), it’s a bit too Ella-centric. I like cookbooks which tell a story (eg Diana Henry), but that story had been told many times already.

I’ll probably end up giving it away!

I find the recipes in this book to be a little too simple for my preferences in every way (including in flavour), but then again, simplicity appears to be the author's goal here. I am a very keen cook and baker; most days, I like to tackle more challenging and flavoursome recipes. Most of the cookbooks which I own are those written by the proprietors of renowned restaurants and bakeries. However, there are days when one just doesn't have time, energy or belly space for that sort of thing, which is why this book (and Ella's first book) has kept its place on my cookbook-shelf. I reach for these recipes when I need a quick, low-effort, and clean meal which will keep me full and give me a good serve of nutrients. I particularly like the smoothie recipes and the grain/veggie bowls.

So, I suppose I am the target audience for this because I am gluten free, vegan and not eating sugar but this sure didn't feel like it was written for anyone other than ladies.
There were so many off handed comments about what ingredients would give you "absolutely glowing skin" and that was quite a turn off.

This is the first cookbook I have ever read straight through. For sure I appreciate how much infomation has been compiled here. For once I don't have to substitute ingrediants for each recipe. However I found her perpetual concentration on the "goodness" of ingredients to be grating. We shall see how much I referance these recipe, as perhaps that is the test of time.

I really enjoy lot of the recipes, but not all. Lets face it, beet root will never be my top veggie, but I generally like to try these recipes and several of them with some modifications became my real favourites - like the mashed potatoes with veggies. I do not always have the combination described by the book, but found ones which work for me. Plus since I am not vegetarian, I also sometimes add meat to the recipe.
This is my second recipe book by the author and I really enjoy the recipes even as meat eater who sometimes likes to have a day without meat. I would recommend this book even if you just want to try something new and new healther recipes.

A brilliant book. A friend bought this for me as a present as I'm gluten intolerant. The recipes are easy to make and have changed my view on how eating vegan and gluten free can be easy, satisfying, tasty and healthy all at the same time. I probably wouldn't have tried to cut out meat and diary as well as gluten if it hadn't been for this book. Effortless revolutionising of the way we eat. Highly recommended.

I love this book. I love that the same ingredients are used which makes shopping so much easier. I like be that she admits to being a lazy cook - I so so relate. The food is delicious and I love that with a little bit of organisation I can whip up lunch in a jiffy. This is the exact book I was looking for. Thank you

Delicious recipes though all high in calorie meals. For housewives like me who doesn't have any kids not that busy as much I need to tweak some of the ingredients to lessen the total calorie of every meal which suits for my lifestyle.
