I am a blank canvas that even the artist in me doesn’t know how to fill. My life started the day I escaped and woke up in the hospital. Escaped from reality. Escaped from fear. Escaped from him. Nothing exists before that, and as the days trickle by, I’m positive there’s nothing after that either. I try though. For Poppa, who hasn’t left my side since I woke up, I try to live. But every attempt is futile. So I escape again and start fresh on a small island, where there aren’t any expectations to fulfill. Where family and friends I don’t remember can't look at me with sadness and disappointment. And when Travis Keillar comes into my life everything changes. The memories I’ve lost become unimportant to the memories I’m creating with him. For the first time since I opened my eyes that fateful day in the hospital, life smiles back at me. Until it doesn’t. Until he comes back for me. For revenge of crimes I don’t remember committing.
Yessi Smith is a South Florida girl living in Texas with her husband and two sons.
She has a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and a Master’s in Human Resource Management and has held several jobs, from picking up dog poop to upper management positions. And now she hopes to leave the business world behind so she can live full time in a world that does not exist until she places her fingers on a keyboard and brings them to fruition.
Life Interrupted is a departure from Yessi Smith's realistic romance into romantic suspense. It is a natural fit.
After a traumatic event, Holly lives in darkness. She doesn't remember her life before. She doesn't remember her life during. She has to pick up the pieces and the fragments after.
There are nightmares in the darkness. And, they're real. They have a name, a face, and they plan to finish what they started.
Holly struggles to reclaim her life and rebuild a new one. Her Poppa is by her side. She attempts to reconnect with old friends in order to find out who she was 'before'.
She creates new memories with a new man, Travis.
As light filters through the darkness, specters appear.
I would say I read the first twenty pages of this book in a frenzy. I did similar with the last one hundred. I had to know what was going to happen.
I don't scare easy. I'm not wired that way. I'm a problem solver. My fear comes out more in terms of practicality i.e. While reading this book, I had the urge to pick up my trusty shovel and hit the villain in the face with it. Repeatedly.
If you like to read romantic-suspense and getting bouquets of chills and shivers, I recommend you pick this one up.
WTH! is what kept going through my mind while reading this book!!! And, to be honest, I'm still baffled at what I read. Right from the prologue, I knew this was going to be a book that would have my mind working overtime trying to figure out the "real story", and I knew it would also not disappoint.
Reading Holly's POV had me asking if she really imagining things or telling the truth? Her interaction with Poppa had me wary but at the same time intrigued, because he was actually helping her try to figure out what happened. Seeing the love he had for her was just beautiful.
Now, Mando was a fucked up individual that had me wanting to rip a new one to him…Yes, I felt for what happened to his loved one but the way he ended up seeking revenge was just FUCKED UP!!! There were times I had to put my tablet down and re-group myself!! I won't give anything else away, just be prepared to have your mind and emotions tossed around.
Life Interrupted was like a puzzle in that you had to really pay attention to what was being said and by whom, because in some strange way, they are all related...It was a totally different book from what I usually read and I am so happy I took a chance in reading it. ~ Kara, 4.5 Raw stars
After being missing for 6 months, Holly wakes up battered and bruised in a hospital. Starting into the eyes of stranger, Holly has no idea she is looking into the eyes of her Poppa. She has no idea who she is or what her life is all about. She has no idea the trauma she just escaped from.
Holly's journey begins now. She must learn her life over again. A life she has no idea is filled with such heartbreak. A life she had no idea was being watched from a distance by evil.
Life interrupted is a journey of self discovery after Holly's life is interrupted by man that causes more horror and pain than anyone could ever have expected.
Just when Holly thinks her life is coming full circle and the past doesn't haunt her as much, she receives a phone call that changes everything. A phone call that puts the lives of many in a tailspin of horror that only Holly can finish, until a familiar face changes the game that was planned for everyone.
The ending.....true forgiveness in the most beautiful way.
If you're looking for a thriller that will enchant you and keep you on the edge of your seat whilst reading, look no further than Life Interrupted by the talented Yessi Smith.
An on the edge of your seat ride, Life Interrupted is Yessi Smith's debut into the romantic suspense genre.
Life Interrupted is an epic story of love and loss, the strength to get through it, and seriously creepy people that we might randomly encounter.
Holly awakens in a hospital bed with no knowledge of how she got there and who she is. Her body is battered and broken. It's a record of something bad happening, really bad, but she can't explain what it is.
The road to recovery is long. The road back to who she was before is longer. Her memories return in fragments, but the mystery of what happened and who did it remains trapped in the darkness.
With the help of her Poppa and her friends, Holly begins to rebuild her life. She meets a new man, Travis, and the future seems bright, but the darkness has a way of seeping into the present. And, the darkness has a name and face.
Yessi brings the emotional power of her romance novels into Life's Interrupted, combining it with fear and tension. If you like thrills, spills, and chills, we highly recommend this book.
You see I don't know where to start with this review, because I loved the whole concept of the story, it literally gave me chills especially Mando's POV I actually craved his chapters. The beginning had me on the edge of my seat, I was biting my nails thinking WHAT IS GOING IS TO HAPPEN NEXT?!?!? 40% in and my mind was royally fucked I loved it,. But then when I realised the "WHY" I couldn't wrap my head around it. Honestly it sort of ruined the whole concept for me. I was expecting Holly do have done something, for this man to act the way he did. But she actually did NOTHING. And that for me was what changed my whole feelings about this story. Okay so I get Mando is a psychopath but still I didn't like the fact he went after Holly in my eyes for no reason. The end blew my mind again, I was like huh okay. Did it mind fuck me YES did it change my opinion no! If anything i just felt that was thrown in there just for the shock factor. A certain twist I knew from the start, so it wasn't a shock to me. I just feel I needed to love this book because one the cover and two the blurb, but I'm just left with a gaping hole in my heart that needs to be filled. But in saying all that, this is just my opinion everyone takes things differently when reading a book.. "No twos persons love the same book" so I would still say, pick up this baby you just may LOVE it. Yessi's writing is on point and it flows so so beautifully. So don't be disheartened, pick it up and form your own opinion.
5.0 out of 5 stars --- Sick with dread mystery meets beautiful writing
A dark tale of self discovery that you won't be able to put down.
Trust issue can run deep without you being tortured by a stranger, so add that to the mix, and you get one heart-racing novel about a girl who's just wanting to move on with her life---if she can remember what that was.
It's not just the story, mystery, or even the twists that make you turn the page (Although those do the job as well). Smith writes her heart out in this book, using phrases of thought to provoke a reader, and the words are as bent around the darkness as the story itself. You get the swirling feeling of water going down the drain knowing something bad is going to happen, but yet you can't stop READING!
I think Smith needs to not only stick with this genre but embrace it. She's got the gift. The gift of treachery.
Life Interrupted left me in a daze for a week pondering how to write a review that would do this amazing book justice. Yessi Smith outdid herself.
Holly’s life begins the day she wakes up in the hospital. She has no memory of who or where she is. She's severely dehydrated and injured with no knowledge of how it happened. She has nightmares that she can't remember upon awakening. All Holly knows for certain is the need to escape from something so monstrous she only see it as Him. Trying to remember, being surrounded by strangers and fit in is exhausting. With the help of her Poppa she is able to take a secluded vacation where no one knows her and there is no pressure. Here she meets Travis and after a rough start, they form a friendship. Travis has skeletons from his past as well and it takes time for both to open up to each other. Their friendship turns into something more and the memories that Holly can’t recall aren’t as important until "He" comes back. Will Holly be able to survive a second round with "Him" and will Travis stay by her and love her after learning all her truths?
This book is written in dual points of views, but not what you would have expected. The mystery and suspense had me on the edge wondering what was going to happen next and if Holly was ever going to get her memory back. Then I kept wondering more about Travis and his past. He shares some of it with Holly but I kept wondering what more is there. Holly disappeared for six months and returns with no memory in very bad shape. What she experiences from Him while held captive is a true test to how strong Holly really is. What goes through the mind of our author to come up with these must be some crazy stuff. The book isn’t all dark as there are some great scenes where we are laughing right along with the characters. We could actually feel what the characters were thinking. There are some great twists with the story and I do hope that we get more with Holly and Travis.
HOLY EPIC OH EM GEE 5 GOLD STARS Imagine curtains opening; you are ready with popcorns and soda; all cozy for an exciting read. You feel you are prepared for the sight and sounds. BAM! Your every sense is bombarded with terror. Fear is like paralyzing snake holding you captive. Your breath hitches as you watch two tiny feet running. They are dirty, bruised and battered and BLEEDING. You hear the harsh breathing. Running. Running. Running. And then the screen goes blank! Yep, that is what I saw and felt left me reeling and I just about had a heart attack. Yessi Smith has captivated my nerdy, geeky mind with the perfect thriller/suspense/mystery romance story and I was salivating for more. And boy did she deliver.
Life Interrupted is a story of a young woman who was kidnapped for reasons that will boggle your mind. Holly Fisher rescues herself from captivity, she is safe from harm yet she doesn’t remember her ordeal or anyone for that matter. When she wakes up in a safe and quite place, she loses her mind when she realizes she knows nothing. Not one thing. She doesn’t remember her family, her friends, and her life. The most heartbreaking scene in the beginning was when she opens her eyes and finds Poppa. Oh Lord have mercy! I felt like curling up into a ball and dying. Poppa was sweet and understanding and the epitome of what all grandfathers should be like. I fell in love with his character and about had another heart attack with what transpires in the end.
As Holly is recovering, her therapist suggest that her daily routine should entail doing things that she used to be familiar with and used to love. Surprisingly, she remembered her passion from before the kidnapping. Painting! And to make my heart beat faster she had a painting partner, Derrick. I proceeded to swoon from this moment. Derrick was a police detective who was sent to Holly to try to make her remember what the perpetrator who had kidnapped her looked like. But their mutual love for painting forged their relationship into something unbreakable and strong. Der made her stronger, physically and mentally. He helped her build herself up as much as she was torn apart. Little did I know that the calm was going to be shattered with the utter devastation waiting to happen right around the corner!
Mando, the evil spawn of satan, the diabolical psychopath who needed to get a life was stalking Holly. I felt my body turn cold at the inner musing of this psycho. His mind left me reeling from the utter malicious thoughts. And his LOGIC! Holy Jesus in heaven! I found his justifications hard to swallow, the things he did on that particular night that changed everything and got the balls rolling in the direction of total destruction was simply put INSANE. Mando gave me the creeps. He made my skin crawl with his insanity. I love, loved how Yessi Smith incorporated Mando’s inner monologues into the story. Holly may have escaped but she hasn’t been able to run far from her kidnapper.
At this point, Holly has been fairly doing well but she feels guilty above everything else because she still doesn’t remember. So she convinces her Poppa to let her stay away and recuperate from prying and hopeful eyes.
And thus enter Travis! The absolutely perfect significant other! He was exactly what the doctor ordered. Her first encounter with Holly made me laugh out loud because she was so feisty and he was so fearless. I loved how he relentlessly pursued her, brought down her walls and helped her heal. I was happy in a safe bubble, grinning and feeling all swoony. BAM.
Yessi Smith decides to bash me with a two by four and render me speechless with what transpires. Something heinous waits for Holly back home and she decides to face it. Because not doing so is out of the question. Holly decides to head back home without Travis but little did Holly know how stubborn Trav can be. So the two head home to face the horror awaiting them.
And thus starts the cat and mouse game that Mando has planned all along, waiting patiently for his prey to come to him. I could hardly believe what I was reading as I neared the crescendo. My heart hurt, my throat was clogged up and I was devastated. LIFE WAS OVER FOR ME.
Life Interrupted was such a sheer pleasure to read that I don’t have enough adjective to describe the epicness of this story. If you’ve read my review so far, YOU KNOW. YOU JUST HAVE TO HAVE THIS BOOK. If you’re looking for a thrill that will give your shivers, that will make you swoon and go all gooey and then go awww, 1-click this bad boy. I swear on all things book, you WILL not be disappointed.
This book was epic, it kept me on the edge all through. I would totally recommend it to everyone.
Not many stories give me the creeps, excite me to the point of combustion, and have me yearning for a good throat punch…but this one, this one had me in absolute fits! Absolutely amazing, and I’m still reeling after getting to read the brilliance that is Yessi Smith.
This story is a true testament of the will to survive that resides in us all. Holly awakens in a hospital with no recollection of her life or whom she is, just the remembrance of extreme fear and loss, brought on by the stranger in her dreams.
The man behind Holly’s disappearance is someone so full of heartache and misery; he’s blinded by his rage, and has turned into a living monster. How do you escape something you don’t understand? Definite page-turner, I couldn’t keep still while reading, and it totally had me looking out the corner of my eye the whole time. Mind blowing…plain and simple!
I am a HUGE fan of Yessi Smith - and this book...My heart was beating a million beats a minute. It was so different for anything that she has ever written before. An on the edge of your seat...thriller.
This book takes you into the mind of a girl who doesn't know who she is. She's been missing for months and has no clue where she's been or who she is. There is so much I could tell you about the book but just don't want to because you need to experience this book in a pure way. This is one of those books that it's best going in knowing nothing except you will be taken on a ride in an EPIC way. The suspense and the romance (in a totally unusual way - make this book a stand out. I know without a doubt it will be in my Top Reads for 2016 NO DOUBT!
At the start of Life Interrupted by Yessi Smith, Holly isn't even sure that her name is Holly. That's what the kindly old man calls her, but what does he know?
In the midst of an avalanche of questions for which she has too few answers within her grasp, she struggles to hold on to her sanity, to her grip on reality, meanwhile, the man who held her prisoner for the last six months, and evidently tortured her over the duration is still out there somewhere. Possibly running for the hills, possibly waiting around the next corner to snatch her back again, the only thing anyone knows for sure is that he's some kind of monster. Something in him has broken in such a way that he could do such a thing in the first place.
I simply can't say too much about the storyline without giving away significant spoilers, so I'll stop there. What I will say is that this book provides a fascinating glimpse of the line people sometimes walk between being sane and insane, between being human and being what we reassuringly label an inhuman monster.
Participating in Holly's journey as she navigates her way from complete ignorance through to a growing awareness of who she is as a person and who she's prepared to try and be, we see her grow, even if the new Holly has no conscious memory of being the old Holly.
The path of her journey has her interacting with a wide range of fascinating characters, from that old man at her bedside to the two BFFs who can't stop expecting Holly to be just plain old Holly, to the two men who enter her life with no expectations from the old Holly, simply accepting the new Holly at face value.
There's love that plays a major role in how Holly's recovery progresses, and love that forces a show down as everything comes together. So much love driving so many relationships. Husband & wife, father & son, brother & sister, woman & man all force the cast of characters towards an epic confrontation that will have you on the edge of your seat.
While its certainly far from what one might consider a traditional romance novel, with significant elements of psychological thriller and a dash of suspense, what I can say with certainty is that it was a ripping good yarn, one I'm tempted to go back to the start and read all over again to make sure I didn't miss anything.
Holly is innocent of anything and everything she is being held accountable for. Yet she doesn’t remember who she is, or why she was taken or much less who took her. What she does know is since she escaped her Poppa hasn’t left her side. Derrick has tried to help her remember along with her therapist and the police have no leads. Holly doesn’t want her family or friends pity; she needs to find her way alone.
Travis Keller gives Holly new memories. She cant remember the old but it doesn’t matter. She learns to smile again and even laugh. Until he … finds her again.
This story was a little rough for me in that it started out really fast and intense and then kind of dropped off in my opinion. I was a little taken back with the things that came to light during the course of the book; especially some of the things at the end. It was more of a “huh .. really” for me than a “wow!” I also didn’t end up really understanding the relationship of two of the characters. You all click this one up and let me know what you think after reading. Maybe with some insight from another point of view I can see things differently.
I received an ARC for an honest review. Review to post to Ramblings From Beneath The Sheets. Thank you Yessi!
Yessi Smith has done it again and imprisoned me with this epic story of love, loss, and the strength to overcome all obstacles. I was on the edge of my seat while reading Life Interrupted.
She ran, escaped, survived. ... from what? Holly wakes in the hospital with no knowledge of who or where she is. Her mind is blank. She broken and battered only feeling the extreme need to escape HIM. The only problem is she doesn't know who HE is.
Yessi has been one of my favorite authors since Life's A Capella. She's the queen of the emotional roller-coaster romance in my eyes and her transition to suspense romance was absolutely flawless.
This is a must read for all my book friends. Prepare yourself for the ride of your life and the love that pulls you through it all
I really enjoyed this book, I wasn't expecting much and I was only reading it as I needed a Y author for another challenge lol.
However this a few twists and turns in it that I didn't see coming and it kept me turning the pages.
Holly went missing, for 6 months, she just turned up in the woods at the back of her grandpa's house battered and bruised and completely void of any memories, she doesn't even know her own name. She managed to escape someone that she can't remember, however he remembers her, and he is not happy that she got away!!
If you know me, you know I love my thrillers/ Romantic suspense novels. As soon as I saw the blurb of Life Interrupted, I knew it was a must read.
First of all, I love the female lead. While she had her weak moments, she still had strength and overcame a lot. The male characters were wonderful as well.
My favorite parts though were definitely the villain and the amazing twists through out!
What a ride! There's nothing I enjoy more than a book that makes you feel or a book that keeps you guessing. Life Interrupted does both. It's a fast read and I probably could have finished it sooner had I not had to stop reading while my heart rate returned to normal. I look forward to many many more books from this author.
I may have stayed up all night alternating between reading and rocking in the corner. This book was just THAT good! It is hands down one of the best suspense/thrillers I've read in a long time.
Wtf did I just read? And I don’t mean that in the good way I mean that in the “man, there goes the time I will never get back or see again” way. Because really, I will never get that valuable reading time back. But I get it, you win some you lose some. Some of my trusted friends were talking about this book so I bought it and ugh. Let’s begin shall we?
The only think I enjoyed about this story was Holly. I really enjoyed her and I enjoyed her coping mechanisms. I also enjoyed the writing! It was very wonderful and flowed nicely. But the story just lacked for me. I also enjoyed Mando’s POV. I liked being shifted to his thoughts and almost would have preferred to stay with his thoughts at most parts.
HOLY PLOT HOLES, BATMAN!! Don’t tell me you didn’t see them because they are all throughout the entire book. Honestly, had Yessi filled those holes, this might have been a 3 or 4 star read for me. I had way too many questions and way too many eye rolls though. The suspense that people were raving about just wasn’t there for me. I didn’t have that nail biting experience that everyone else had. Some of it was actually quite predictable.
INSTA-LOVE, EW!
All in all, it was just “MEH” for me. I skimmed the last 30% pretty hard just to get past the lulls. There was nothing realistic in the least to me. No police, no FBI. There was ONE Psychiatrist. That is it. The middle of the book was tremendously SLOW. Which sucked because the first part of the book was so fast paced. Then you get to the ending and literally……wow……that?
An innocent young woman, a twisted psycho hell bent on revenge, and a sweet and sexy guy all make for a story that will leave you literally breathless. I don't want to go into too much detail because I don't want to give too much away, but prepare to hang on tight!
If I had to sum this book up in one word, that word would be "Amazing", but there's no way this book can be just that. It makes you experience too much, feel too much, and think too much to be just amazing. Terror, fear, despair, pain, hate, contempt...I felt it all and I wanted someone to hold me and tell me it was going to be okay. But then there were the sweet moments, the funny moments, romance and love, friendship and strength. It was dark, but with enough light to give hope.
This story is literally gut-wrenching...I felt sick to my stomach at times. I was afraid to read but couldn't stop reading!!! Yessi Smith's mind must be one helluva place. How is it possible that a book can elicit such emotions, to the point of sweaty palms, nausea, and butterflies? She's just that good of a writer, that's how. Even if it's not your usual type of book, do yourself a favour and read it, although you may scream and curse the author many times throughout, in the end, you'll be happy you took this journey.
I can't even with this book. I'm just gonna start by saying, as soon as I seen the trailer for this book I NEEDED it. NEEDED! The trailer pulled at me that much.
I Needed to see what happened to Holly. I got goose bumps thinking of it. So to say i was excited starting this book was an understatement.
Then I read the prologue..... HOLY CRAP. Hooked. I was actually screaming RUN, RUN AND DON'T LOOK BACK!'
I feel like reading Hollys story I held by breathe the whole book. I was heartbroken for her. What she went through NO ONE should go through. The terror, the loss. Her life was took from her.
But Holly fights, for her Poppa more then anything(flove him by the way!) And that fighting for him starts to make he fight for herself. She gets away from everything, and finds just what she needs. Or should I say WHO she needs.... Travis is EVERYTHING she needs. Hell, he's everything I need LOL.
She starts to heal, hour by hour. Day by day. But HE won't let that happen. He can't allow it. And yes, he's as messed up as you can think. He's just.... ugh, shivers even thinking of him.
This is a must read, which I'm sure will become a favourite for people in 2016.
YES these is a love story here. But I won't lie, know the book your going into is dark and twisted. And OH so beautiful.
Holly doesn't know who she is or what has happened to her as she wakes up in a hospital bed, all she can sense was that it was bad and she feels as if she was tortured. We learn that Holly has been missing for six months and we also learn that her parents were killed in an accident four months before that and she has been living with her Poppa. The way her parents died though wasn't exactly an accident and we discover that it is connected to the guy who abducted her as he was in the other car and his wife ended up hurt and now he wants to exact revenge on Holly as it was her parents that caused in his mind the accident. During Holly's recovery we meet Derrick who is a sketch artist and eventually befriends Holly during her recovery period - but near the end we discover that their is more to Derrick than meets the eye. It seems that the guy who abducted Holly , won't give up that easily and soon everyone of Holly's friends and remaining family have a target painted on their back. Can Holly identify her abductor to the police and have him put behind bars and locked away or will he get back to Holly first and finally put an end to his little game of cat and mouse ?
Find out in Life Interrupted, which was a new adult romantic suspense with an kidnapping/ amnesiac edginess to the storyline.
This book is simply amazing! I love Romantic Suspense but this has to have been one of my favorites so far. Holly awakens in the hospital and doesn't remember anything. She doesn't know why she was taken or what she did. She isn't even sure if her name is Holly. She really struggles with holding onto her sanity and her grip on reality. Not to mention the man who not only kidnapped but tortured her for the last six months is still out there somewhere.
No one has any idea where he is and the only thing that is certain is that he is a monster. Broken in a way that no one can understand. Holly begins to recover and as we watch that process we see her grow and find love with Travis. Of course the new Holy still has no memory of the old Holly. The journey that Holly takes is one that I was simply drawn into. The entire story simply held me captive from beginning to end. I couldn't put it down!
I received this book for free from in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. This review was first published at Blushing Reads.
I found out about this book on a whim, the author brought it to my attention and I couldn't resist jumping right in to read it. So very glad I did. Romantic suspense at its best. I was tense, optimistic and thoroughly on the edge of my seat. With all of that I was still shocked by this book. Happy shocked.
Oh. My. God. I must be one sick person to have really thought this book was so good, but it was! I always wonder how an author can come up with such literally sick stuff that most humans probably can't even fathom! I happen to love mystery, thrillers, and realistic fiction of that nature and this book really was creepy!!
Holly is the female MC and is one of the POV's of the story. The story begins with her waking up in a hospital setting with Poppa right there, but she doesn't know who he is or why she's there...or where "there" is for that matter. She learns quickly that Poppa is her loving grandfather and Holly begins to lean on him for her sanity back to some degree of normalcy.
Poppa, I have to talk about him. He's such a loving man who truly cares about Holly's well-being. Sadly,
Mando is the male MC and the psycho (literally) who He is SOOOOOOOOOOOO SICK that I really don't want to say more about him. I will say, however, that Yessi Smith shows us inside the mind of a truly F--ed up sick, SICK man!!!!
Eventually Holly goes to an island to get away from her fears, hopefully, and meets Travis Keillar who seems to be the perfect friend. They hang out together and each helps the other with certain life issues. Ugh...I want to say so much here but I will let the other readers discover for themselves the things they might not otherwise have considered.
Then there is Derrick, the detective/artist who is on the case and tries to do everything in his power to protect Holly. It is easier said than done though.
Recommendation: ONLY if you can handle DARK stories would I attempt this one. Mando is one SICK SOB, but even so this story is one of those page turners that I swear I literally got shivers as I read, I literally cringed when reading some of his POV's, and I did something I rarely do...I spoke aloud several times with things like, "Oh my God" or "NO!" Yes, I promise you I did and I rarely do that when I'm reading. But it is SO GOOD, even if it IS sick!
I’ll own it, I bought this book for its cover. The story line had so much potential but if fell short for me. The characters were great but I can’t get over how unrealistic all the other things were. If I’m reading a “suspense” novel, it needs to be realistic. I skimmed from 25%-64%. That a huge chunk of book. This one fell short, but I still love the cover.
Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars POV: Multiple / 1st person Naughty Factor: 2 out of 5
I've read a couple Yessi Smith romances before and fell in love with each and every one of her characters. When I heard she was releasing a dark/suspense I knew I just had to read it. And...Whoa! Even knowing it was going to be so different from what I'd read before, I was REALLY impressed. The storyline was intense. I was pulled in from the very start and the story held on to me tightly.
If someone was to ask me to describe this book in one word, it would be Survival. That was the theme I picked up from this book. Holly was a survivor. Even as she emerged with no memory of who she is or what she went through, she was determined to regain her strength and independence. She refused to let it control who she will be. Though she struggled to reconnect with people from her past, she didn't let it deter her from trying. She even tries to make new friends and new memories.
On her journey to discover the person she wants to be, she meets Travis. Travis was one of the sweetest, male characters I've come across. His tattooed exterior was the complete opposite to the person he was. Slightly broken himself, he and Holly connected instantly and built a friendship that quickly escalated to more. As Holly shows Travis that his childhood does not define him and how to appreciate the good he has in his life, she, in turn finds her own internal strength as he shows her how strong she is by just surviving what she went through...even though she can't remember.
When trouble returns for Holly, their shared strengths and their feelings for each is tested and demonstrated just how strong that bond is. It was inspiring to see how far they were willing to go for each other and what they were willing to sacrifice for the other.
Yessi Smith stepped out of her NA/Contemporary box to deliver a powerful and chilling story that kept me in suspense from beginning to end.
I'm not afraid to admit that this book threw me for a loop.
I wondered why the author would choose to alternate view points of the heroine, Holly, and her sadistic abductor, Mondo, so I was quite the skeptic at first. But man, did it work. Coupling the tortured thoughts of a PTSD sufferer with the obsessive evil of the one who tortured her was damn near brilliant.
Dissociative amnesia is a coping mechanism for a person who has suffered a trauma. After Holly escapes Mondo's shed where she's been held for six months, she can't remember anything before waking up in the hospital. However, panic, terror, nightmares, and flashbacks all plague her as she tries to find freedom and some semblance of normalcy.
In contrast Holly's suffering is Mondo's dogged obsession with getting her back to make her suffer for a sin she didn't even commit. The glimpses into his twisted psyche were jarring. I could almost compare his character to one of James Patterson's twisted serial-killing villains.
Now, blending a psychological thriller with a romance really doesn't sound all that great, but it was. Some of the romance was a bit clumsy, but with Holly's emotional state, if it weren't clumsy, it would have been unbelievable.
Toward the end, it became very hard to read. The author showed how twisted Mondo really was, and although the depth of his depravity was captivating, he does torture, maim, emotionally abuse, and kill, all the while enjoying it. Be warned.
Yes, there were some aspects of the novel I didn't like, some unforgivable, but belaboring those points would bring spoilers. Let's just say Holly is way nicer and more forgiving than I would have been at the end. Plus, the lack of future-telling in the epilogue left me a bit hollow.
Besides those tiny things I didn't like, it is still my first full-length five-star book in a long time. It honestly deserved them.
I absolutely loved how this story started off. A young woman wakes up in a hospital with no memory of who she is or how she got there. I's apparent that something horrific happened because she was missing for over 6 months. Nobody knows what happened and Holly can't tell them. Over the coarse of the book pieces of mystery are being presented through Holly's dreams and from the person responsible for her absence. I love that we get into the mind of this crazed and evil man. It's actually my favorite part of the book.
The middle part of the book is mostly about Holly's road to recovery, self discovery and her budding romance with the oh so hot and cocky, Travis. We still got some thrills along the way but this part really added some depth and direction to the story. I was thoroughly enjoying this book and tossing around 4-5 stars in my head. I knew it was going to come down to the ending.
I was soooooo disappointed. The end ruined the entire book for me. From the time Holly and Travis found the shed, till the very end, there was not one character that didn't let me down. Unlikely (even in fiction), disappointing, and just plain lacking. Even the twist (which I didn't see coming) that had so much potential, fell flat in the end. I wish I could say more but I can't without including spoilers. I know others didn't have the issues I had with the ending so maybe you will feel differently.
