We all know a person like Raymond Winters. He is Everyman. You see him daily on your commute to work. He sits in the cubicle next to yours. He's the guy plodding through life, just going through the motions. He's not happy. His work is not fulfilling. But he never expected anything more. At 41, he's stuck in a rut, without the energy to climb out. Sure, he dreams of a different life. He dreams about it a lot. But Raymond knows the difference between dreams and reality. Then Raymond's life takes an unexpected sharp turn after a chance encounter with a strange woman. Overnight he finds himself alienated from his family, shunned by his neighbors, and questioning his own sanity. Raymond is in over his head, and if he survives, life will never be the same. In Black Friday, Nick Russell, New York Times bestselling author of the Big Lake mystery series, weaves a tale of betrayal, lust, and broken dreams that you will remember long after you finish the last page.
As per always a great and easy read. Mr. Russell never fails to keep me on the edge of my seat and not being able to put the read down. He writes so smooth and easy. He's a great teller of stories. I'm sorry I've read all his books thus far and he has no new ones currently. If you love a good mystery, he's your man. I hope he has a new novel soon. Thank you sir for all of your stories.
What a story! What a wild ride! Mild mannered, everyday guy goes out shopping on Black Friday and his life changes when an attractive woman invites him to go out for coffee. How does that simple event turn the story into a gripping thriller? You can't imagine the twists and turns. Definitely a book you can't put down from a master of character development.
There was nothing that enjoyed about this book. I was becoming so anxious that I finally skipped to the end to see how it ended. I have enjoyed everything Nick Russell has written except this book. It was just too depressing.
This book was so compelling! The characters, the twisted plot, I read it in one sitting and loved it!. I hope Nick Russell continues to write these compelling books, because I certainly want to read them!
I’ve read several of Nick Russell’s books and I’m always intrigued to see if I can pick up that “little” piece of information he gives along the way that makes you think you know who is the bad guy. This one didn’t disappoint.
Great read and great ending. Thoroughly enjoyed the entire story. Nick Russell has proven ability as an entertaining writer for good story twists and very good endings. Thanks again.
Raymond Winters’ life is crumbling around him, and in some ways you’d think he’d be better off. An unfortunate mistake leads Raymond down a path of betrayal, murder and the struggle to defend his innocence. This is a fast paced psychological mystery that leaves the reader wondering if this could happen to them.
I’ve read all of Nick Russell’s Big Lake books and desperate for more of his excellent writing, I picked up Black Friday (and Dog’s Run, which is reviewed separately).
Typically I receive books for free in exchange for an honest and unbiased review, however if I find an author whose work is exceptional, I will purchase their novels from that point forward. That is the case with Mr. Russell’s work, aside from the first Big Lake novel which I received for free, I have purchased all of his works. In BLACK FRIDAY, Nick Russell brings back the gritty noir of Raymond Chandler and Erle Stanley Gardner's writings. The protagonist is flawed and fighting for his life while evil both seen and unseen surrounds him. Mr. Russell continues with his uncanny ability to introduce characters we can empathize with as fear and evil invades their sleepy lives. As usual, I had trouble putting down one of Nick's mysteries, wanting to live within it's pages in one sitting. What's next?
I had figured out the who but not the why until the very end . Well done Nick. You kept me on the hook until the end. This is a great read. This one is right up there with Dogs Run. Keep up the good work..
I had figured out the who but not the why until the very end. Well done, Nick. You kept me on the hook until the last few pages. Keep the good work coming.
I consider this to be the best of the books I have of Russell's. Talk about an edge of the seat thriller! One can really feel the frustrations off this poor guy as the story unfolded. Unfortunately, with today's justice system, this could and probably has happened!
Great murder mystery with a fine cast of characters and great insight into the key personalities. So many psychological issues examined in this book with suspense at every turn. Great look at the human condition in this western world rat race.
What a great story. I started reading on Black Friday and just couldn't stop till I finished. I guess near the end it became clear who the bad guy was but not why he was.
