“12 cold months. 5 hot Regency-set stories. 1 missing duke.
The duke has died. Long live the duke! The only problem is no one knows who the new Duke of Beckworth is. All of England wonders, but no one more so than the people who depend upon Beckworth for their livelihood. In 1816, a year so cold that the word “summer” is a cruel joke, that livelihood is even more uncertain. However, they are all about to find out, there is nothing more warming than scandal and love…”
The A Year Without a Duke Series is a 5 book series with each one written by a different author. The first in the series, Jilted in January is by Kate Pearce.
The story is about Rose Leyton who is distantly related to the deceased Duke, and therefore his undiscovered heir too. She has been betrothed since she was 17. Soon after the engagement her fiancé as well as her brother went off to war. She's waited patiently for him to return for years, and is absolutely devastated when she receives a letter informing her that her engagement is off because he has married somebody else.
Colin Ford is the fifth son of an impoverished Earl. He's always had to make his own way in the world. He worked as a land agent to the previous Duke, and until told otherwise, Colin is the missing Duke's land agent. He becomes friendly with Rose when she offers to help him sort out a huge mess left by the estate's head land agent who ran away from the place when the old Duke died.
Colin and Rose get along famously, and when she finds out her betrothal is at an end it is his shoulder that she cries on. Her brother and ex-fiancé return, and her brother is determined to marry her off to anybody so that she doesn't sue his friend, her ex, for a broken betrothal contract. He has a man in mind, a much older rich man. He insists that Rose must marry him, but she has no desire to. If the Duke was present he would be her guardian and could stop Rose having the marriage forced upon her. But of course he hasn't been found yet, so Colin decides to help out by telling her brother that she is already betrothed to him. Rose is extremely grateful for his help, but what neither of them expect is that her brother would force their hand and get them a special license to marry immediately.
Will they go through with the marriage, if they do, what will their lives be like. Where is the missing Duke, could he be found and perhaps offer Rose a larger Dowry and stop her brother insisting that she marry immediately, so that she has more options when it comes to finding a husband. And why did the head land agent run off, what is he hiding?
This book is so much more than a romance story, and there is such a lot packed into it considering it's length. I was very surprised at how much was going on, and all of it an exciting, passionate read. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and hope that the next books in the series by the other authors will be equally as good.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
