I would recommend that this five-part novella series be read in order as the there can be spoilers in the next book. Duke Beckworth has died without an heir and now the next in line must be found. Each novella gets us closer to finding on the Duke.

JILTED IN JANUARY
(A Year Without a Duke: #1)
Written by Kate Pearce
2016; Kate Pearce (81 Pages)
Genre: series, fiction, romance, historical, novella

RATING: ★★★1/2

The Duke of Beckworth has died leaving behind no heirs to take over his inheritance. As they search for the next duke in line for the Dukedom Colin Ford, an assistant land agent, is helping to watch over the country estate. Rose Leyton, a distant relative of the Duke, is stuck waiting at the country estate while her brother and her fiance are off fighting the war. When her fiance finally returns she finds out that he has already married someone else. And, her own brother, and her fiancee's best friend, is more worried about his friend than her. In fact, he is ready for her to marry a wealthy old man so she cannot sue for promise of marriage. To save her from a brutal marriage, Colin asks for her hand in marriage. Rose finds herself very interested in this proposal - more than just an escape!

I really liked Rose and Colin and found their romance to be sweet. I also like the main story arc of trying to find the next duke. Letters between the esquire and housekeeper are so endearing. This is my first book by Kate Pearce and I will try another one of her novels.

For a short novella, this was very complete and charming, thus the 5 star rating.

Jilted in January is the first story in the A Year Without a Duke collection, where five different authors tell the stories of people connected to the Beckworth dukedom as the search for the ducal heir takes place.

Mr. Colin Ford is the fifth son of an earl and the current land agent for the Beckworth estate. He is quite overwhelmed with the task of putting the estate finances to rights after the previous agent fled into the night, with a bunch of money stolen from the Duke in hand. Miss Rose Leyton is a distant cousin of the Duke and has been living on the property while waiting for her betrothed to return from the war. She and Colin strike up a friendship while sorting through the financials that develops into something deeper. Neither of their fates play out as they expected and Colin was always noble and caring, ultimately winning a prize in a practical, passionate, and supportive Rose.

This was a sweet story that I enjoyed very much. I thought the sex scenes (yes, the author managed to cram two in a 81 page novella!) were a bit graphic when you consider the sweetness of the rest of the story, but when I looked at her other publications, she seems to write a lot of more erotic works so that makes sense why she included them. Overall, I'd recommend this and will definitely be continuing with the collection!

For a short read read this is a very well written and entertaining tale. Rose Leyton is a distant relative of the Duke of Beckworth, she is hoping her betrothed will return from the war soon to claim her. Meanwhile the duke has died and all are waiting for his heir to come and claim the title. Colin Ford assistant to the land agent is the youngest son of an impoverished earl, also works on the estate. When the land agent absconds with all the available cash it's left to Colin to try and sort things out, Rose offers to assist him and they quickly become friends. When Rose's brother turns up with her betrothed things take a turn that Rose wasn't expecting.
I've not read anything by this author before but I have to say the writing was spot on, it certainly has the feel of the period. It's not what I would call 'hot' but it is sensuous. This is part of a series each story being written by a different author. But each is a complete story.

Everything a historical novel should be – yes – it is! The writing made me FEEL as if I were back in time with people living by different rules and yet each character was believable and interesting. I love historical novels and stories set in the past and this one was a delight.

The premise is that the Duke of Beckworth has died but nobody is quite sure who will assume his title and lands. In this first novella of the series Colin Ford, fifth son of an Earl, is working as the assistant land agent on the Beckworth estate. His superior has disappeared and left a mess that he will need to deal with. Miss Rose Leyton, a distant relation of the Duke’s, is acting as a companion to an elderly aunt while waiting for her fiancé to return from war.

Both Rose and Colin have noticed one another and are friends so when Rose’s betrothal is broken, her brother appears with ideas of marrying her off to someone else she is repelled by and Colin steps in as a temporary fiancé things become interesting. Before the story ends there are fisticuffs, a thief is caught, a treasure is found and a marriage takes place.

This story is well written, in keeping with the time period and just plain fun. I loved the quietness of both Colin and Rose and their circumspect behavior…until things changed…and oh my…how their relationship changed when it was time for it to do so!

This wonderfully fleshed out novella tells the story of what happens in the House of Beckworth immediately following the death of its duke. Because the duke dies without a direct heir; the search for the next in line to inherit the dukedom has begun.

Rose Leyton may be a lady, but as a distant relation of the late duke, and and the betrothed of an officer away at war; she is a woman in limbo.
When the estate's land agent runs away with embezzled funds, leaving pressing questions and financial destruction in his wake.
Rose and the attractive and thoughtful assistant land agent, Colin Ford, are left to put things to rights. Becoming friends, and more, in the process.

Both Rose and Colin are very strong characters. The more that readers get to know of them, and the more that they discover of each other; the more likeable they become on all accounts.
The fact that they are not part of the aristocracy, but are directly effected by the search for the duke. Serves to make their story both compelling and relevant.

Surprisingly, the attraction between Rose and Colin has more than enough time to mature within the course of 81 pages.
The surprising gateway to happily...comes in a very dramatic twist!

This is a great start to a wonderful series of interconnected stories.

Jilted in January is the first book (of 5) in the multi-author A Year Without a Duke series. The series has an intriguing premise: one of England's wealthiest and most prominent dukes, the Duke of Beckworth has died and there is no immediate heir, and the five books in the series explore how the Duke's death affects the various people in his life.

From a reader's standpoint, I think the first book of a new series is always the trickiest to write, because the first book needs to establish the premise and introduce the main and recurring characters in that series. Kate Pearce starts off A Year Without a Duke with Jilted in January, the story of the Duke of Beckworth's assistant land agent, and Rose Leyton, a ward of the late duke. Colin Ford is sifting through the mess that was left behind by the Duke's sudden death, and by his "predecessor's" sudden flight from the estate -- Colin discovers unpaid bills, and empty coffers, and help in the form of Rose Leyton.

Rose is waiting: Waiting for the new Duke to be found so she could discover what lies in her future. Waiting for her betrothed to return home from war. Waiting to be married after seven years of engagement. She'd never stepped foot in the land agent's offices before, but, with things in upheaval, she finds herself stumbling through the piles of papers and documents and ransacked drawers, and finds Colin Ford.

Together, they sort through the office and restore a semblance of order to the late Duke's estate -- and, at the same time, they discover a kinship: Colin is the fifth son of an Earl of modest means and depends on his occupation as assistant land agent, and Rose's life and future depends on her brother's decision, her betroth's return, and on the new Duke. Then Rose finds out that her betrothed has, not only broken their engagement, but has also gotten married, Rose is back to square zero -- and her brother isn't helping her, and has, in fact, sided with her former fiance. It is Colin who speaks up for her, defends her and stands up for her.

And in so doing, gets himself engaged to Rose.

I thought Kate Pearce did a great job introducing the series and the premise. The first few chapters do start out a bit slow, but it's because the author wants to establish the conversations and the relationship between Colin and Rose. When the complication arises with the return of Rose's brother, the reasons why Colin acts and reacts the way he does is already very clear. What surprises me about this particular Kate Pearce novel is that she decides to take another route to love: yes, there's attraction, and, yes, there's a spark -- but this doesn't have the combustible passion that one usually finds in her stories.

And I like it. I like that sex isn't the solution, but is actually part of the problem. I like that Colin and Rose are slow to figure out how they'll fit into their new lives together.

As Colin and Rose's story ends, one sees the beginnings of a tentative resolution between these two characters -- and, yes, it does feel like a cliffhanger.

After Jilted in January, I went on the read Book 4: An Affair in Autumnby Jennifer Haymore -- and, I have to say, each instalment in the series reads very well as a stand-alone, but one can see the bigger picture forming.

Every so often I find historical romances. The title interests me, or in this case the series, and I start reading. I must say that I am pretty impressed that they were able to put together this series with a variety of authors.

Ms. Pearce has created an interesting set of characters in this book. Instead of “courting” as you would normally find, they begin as friends. Which makes this tale a little more interesting.
Rose Leyton is betrothed to her brother’s best friend, and in her eyes “the love of her life.” I guess that is how she sees the individual … at times, it is hard to tell because of the historical aspect, there are times when I am thinking I am so lucky to have been born in the day & age I was (Oh, but this is about Rose … LOL not me!).
She has been waiting for years for the return of her solider. But just prior to his return, she receives a letter informing her that he is breaking off the engagement because he JUST recently married. Then the fruit cake SHOWS up to were she is!!! (Sorry, this woman handled herself well … in todays time, fruit cake would have been HIT or worse, who knows with today’s woman.) Why he has the balls to show up … sorry, you will have to read that in the story.
Colin Ford, is the assistant land agent … well, he was the assistant until the head man took off with all the money for the estate when the Duke of Beckworth died. Now, he is simply trying to clean up the disaster that was left for him, in a locked office. (Personally, here is where many of us would have hunted the idiot he is taking over for down … the mess & lack of work-ethic!!)
Ms. Leyton begins helping Mr. Ford clean up the mess of his office. They have become friends, before the dreaded letter appears and upsets Ms. Leyton.
When the fruit cake arrives, it is with Ms. Leyton’s brother. Who is determined to see that she is married ASAP, even if it means to an extremely older man. Just to “clear” things up, so to speak. Oh, the reason he sinks this low is pitiful & he should be dishonorable discharged from the military! (The man is an officer, and he really puts an horrid side to what family can be like.) Yes, this is another … if you want to know pick up the book, because I am not spilling that tid-bit of info.
This is were Mr. Ford steps in and tells the brother that HE just proposed to Ms. Leyton. His “brilliant idea (??)” was to prevent her from being forced into a marriage she did not want. He is HOPING that this betrothal will hold until the new Duke of Beckworth is found (oh the joy, they have in finding him!).
Oh but sadly this is where I have to stop, from here you have to read the book. You will find it interesting & different, if you are like me and don’t really read historical romances often.

As for the series … yes, I had to read them all. “Bloody Hell” how was I to find out what happened to all the extra characters in the book. (Just keep reading the letters from the head housekeeper & lawyer … they are interesting & would have made a GREAT story to go with this series!)

This is the first book of 5 (each standalone novellas) by different authors, with a continuing story arc in that the Duke of Beckworth is currently an absentee post, as the reigning duke has died, and it's unclear who the proper successor is! In this story, Colin is the assistant to the Land Agent, a rather unscrupulous fellow who has abandoned the estate (and stolen from it as well) and left Colin with quite a paperwork mess to deal with. Rose is living at the Estate, a distant cousin of the family and a woman who is patiently waiting for the return of her fiance from his soldiering duties. She's rather bored, and helping Colin gives her something to do, and a new and solid friendship. When her fiance abruptly ends their engagement, Colin steps in, and a marriage of convenience happens in the blink of an eye. Suddenly these two friends find themselves in a much more intimate situation than they had ever imagined - can their friendship lead to love?

I really enjoyed this introduction to the series, and the romance within. There is a clear picture of the responsibilities and expectations of the time for all of the characters. Colin knows that as the fifth son of an impoverished Earl, he's got to make his own way in life and he's quite happy working as a businessman, numbers and accounting being his forte. He's a handsome gentleman too, and a kind and generous man. He and Rose clearly get along well together, and they both enjoy the relative freedom of being friendly with each other without any commitments (since when they meet Rose is engaged). I liked Rose's character too, her desire to stand up for herself and ensure that her future is going to be of her choosing (even though it ends up not quite how she expected!). Colin and Rose made a lovely couple, and they definitely share an attraction to each other that leads to some sensual scenes. I appreciated their ability to be truthful with each other and that communication definitely wasn't a problem. Lovely happy ending to this one, and an entertaining and solid story. Looking forward to reading more in the series!

Colin the new, untrained assistant to an a land agent whom appears to have disappeared with all the money and left the estate in an extreme mess. As the fifth son of an impoverished Earl, Colin realizes that this is his time to show the duke’s lawyers that he can do the job, plus he really needs the job. While Colin tries to organize the mess, he becomes very attracted to his own little helper. But wait didn’t she say that she is waiting for her betrothed to return for her.

Rose has been living at the Duke of Beckworth’s estate waiting for her betrothed, who is in the military. She has been very bored being somewhat companion to the Duke’s Great Aunt. Why not help Colin organize this mess, while she patiently waits for her betrothed. After all her betrothed should be returning soon. The war is over and any day he should be here. Until she finally receives a letter about him with very disappointing news.

Colin and Rose become very attracted to each, which is very predictable. This is a very quick read, so there was not a lot of development of the characters. I know this a part of a series called “A Year Without A Duke”, I hope there is more to this story in the end, because it really leaves you wanting know more.

You know you are reading a well written story when you like everything about it.

This is the first book in the series A Year Without a Duke. Rose Leyton is pretty much at the mercy of distant relatives when she meets Mr. Colin Ford, a man that pretty much has nothing to offer her but a much needed friendship. Their friendship blooms into something deeper as time passes but neither of them can (or want) to accept it of course due to the circumstances of the times. Their relationship is definitely believable and romantic. The bedroom scenes although steamy didn’t feel forced or out of place; to me they were just a couple learning to love each other in a most sensual way.
The main plot had a sort of suspense underlying that added a great mix to the whole and gave Colin that look of being a hero without coming across as an Alpha and that I very much applaud (sometimes I get tired of those, not often mind you, but sometimes I do).

This story was such a delight to read that I finished it in one sitting. I’ll definitely be reading other books by the same author and of course the rest of the books in this series.

I received an ARC of this book (novella??? Short story???) from the publisher and NetGalley in return for my honest review.

Well -- this was a sweet story, but very short. It might be a novella, but it is a short one -- maybe too long to be a short story. This is a new author for me.

Anyway, it really is a nice story. I really liked that neither the hero or heroine were titled. They were just ordinary folks.

This book just felt 'unfinished' to me. Yes, the hero and heroine got their happy ending, but so much was untold, unsolved, undone -- just a lot of 'UN'. I'm assuming that the reason for that is that there are something like 5 stories in the series and maybe the wrap-up to all of them will come with the last book or something. By the Way -- each of the stories is written by a different author. I would have preferred to have gotten this anthology style -- all of them at once.

I like the story -- but -- it just needs something more and I hope that comes with the other books.

As the two work through the clues to find who is holding Alfred, the closer they get to that the more their hearts are shared. So join in the twists and turns of this romantic intrigue that has three stories intertwined. Cheer as you solve the clues, cry at the heart-brake, and laugh as momma scolds her children, then sigh as joy finds its place. Does Alfred accomplish his goal? Does Persephone stake her mark as the London Fixer like she did in New York? Does Edward find his peace?

A magical story with strong independent characters that bring a sad truth to light in a very poignant way. Discrimination is tough to deal with but Kate has done a magnificent job of creating a story that share the good and bad side of this delicate topic. If only more people shared this view maybe discrimination would finally end.

Because I couldn't sleep after finishing a disappointing historical romance novel, I found myself reading two novellas, this being one of them. I liked this. I thought the characters were sweet and charming. It's also refreshing that the hero is not the lord of the manor but someone working for the lord (though still nobility). I wish this could have been a novel because the writing and the characters are novel-worthy (though, if it were a novel, I'm sure the hero would become lord of the manor and not his estate manager). I think this is more a 3.5 than a 3.

I really enjoyed a different spin on second chance lovers. He jilted her because of misplaced fear of opening her up to the discrimination he had experienced as a biracial person. She was utterly heartbroken. So when she returns to London after 10 years away, they both realize their love hadn't diminished. But can past mistakes be forgiven and can the Ton leave them be this time around? Ahighly enjoyable read!

The A Year Without a Duke Series is a 5 book series with each one written by a different author. The first in the series, Jilted in January is by Kate Pearce.

The story is about Rose Leyton who is distantly related to the deceased Duke, and therefore his undiscovered heir too. She has been betrothed since she was 17. Soon after the engagement her fiancé as well as her brother went off to war. She's waited patiently for him to return for years, and is absolutely devastated when she receives a letter informing her that her engagement is off because he has married somebody else.

Colin Ford is the fifth son of an impoverished Earl. He's always had to make his own way in the world. He worked as a land agent to the previous Duke, and until told otherwise, Colin is the missing Duke's land agent. He becomes friendly with Rose when she offers to help him sort out a huge mess left by the estate's head land agent who ran away from the place when the old Duke died.

Colin and Rose get along famously, and when she finds out her betrothal is at an end it is his shoulder that she cries on. Her brother and ex-fiancé return, and her brother is determined to marry her off to anybody so that she doesn't sue his friend, her ex, for a broken betrothal contract. He has a man in mind, a much older rich man. He insists that Rose must marry him, but she has no desire to. If the Duke was present he would be her guardian and could stop Rose having the marriage forced upon her. But of course he hasn't been found yet, so Colin decides to help out by telling her brother that she is already betrothed to him. Rose is extremely grateful for his help, but what neither of them expect is that her brother would force their hand and get them a special license to marry immediately.

Will they go through with the marriage, if they do, what will their lives be like. Where is the missing Duke, could he be found and perhaps offer Rose a larger Dowry and stop her brother insisting that she marry immediately, so that she has more options when it comes to finding a husband. And why did the head land agent run off, what is he hiding?

This book is so much more than a romance story, and there is such a lot packed into it considering it's length. I was very surprised at how much was going on, and all of it an exciting, passionate read. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and hope that the next books in the series by the other authors will be equally as good.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Short and sweet. Jilted in January by Kate Pearce is the first novella in the boxed set of books in the A Year without a Duke series. A Year Without a Duke
by Kate Pearce, Suzanna Medeiros, Genevieve Turner, Jennifer Haymore, Sabrina Darby. Each story is assigned a month; Jilted in January, Forbidden February etc etc I've not read the remaining books but will shortly.
Considering the number of books published by Kate Pearce I'm surprised that I have not yet read any of her other work, especially since this one was very nice. I liked both Colin and Rose and the other staff at the estate and hope they will be in the other stories so I can learn more about them.

In 1816, a year so cold that the word “summer” is a cruel joke, that livelihood is even more uncertain. Jilted in January is the first book in the new series A Year Without a Duke written by a handful of different authors. The Duke of Beckworth has died and while the family is searching out the rightful heir, romance is in the air…

Kate Pearce starts it off with Rose and Colin’s story.

Assistant land agent Mr. Colin Ford suddenly finds himself as head agent of the estate after the previous land agent runs off after stealing available funds and leaving the books in a mess. With the help of Miss Rose Leyton, they are able to get the books back in somewhat of an order and the two become fast, unexpected friends.

Rose has been left under the protection of the Duke of Beckworth while her betrothed is away in the military. When her betrothed unexpectedly breaks their engagement, Rose knows her future is undermined until the rightful Duke can be discovered. Considering herself “plain” and without money, Rose doesn’t expect to have a marriage of love. When her brother shows up intending to marry Rose off as soon as possible before a scandal can arise, Colin steps in with a “fake” proposal to save her…but things don’t go quite as they expected.

I really enjoyed this little story. It was sweet and Colin and Rose were both so adorable. I loved how they were friends first and had a lot of respect for each other. I did miss the erotism that I’m used to getting when reading a book by this author, but the two love scenes were sweet and the steaminess fit the rest of the story.

There was a lot happening here: the unknown Duke, the missing land agent, the brother forcing his sister to marry, the thief… But somehow it all seemed unimportant and not super urgent. Even when Colin and Rose were about to be married, I didn’t feel any real concerns on their part. Overall, it was a very light read without much, if any, angst.

My only real complaint would be the sudden ending. I found myself wanting more of Rose and Colin!!

In the end, I think my favorite thing about this book was that both characters were untitled and not wealthy…common people finding love.

I’m looking forward to reading the second installment Forbidden in February by Suzanna Medeiros.

** I received an eARC of this book from the publisher and netgalley in exchange for an honest review**

I thought this novella was delightful. Kate Pearce is such a talented and versatile author, she can write books that are so hot you think your eyeballs might burn and she can also write really sweet, heartfelt romance. This novella was the latter. Sweet and spicy - not her usual fare, but just as good and just as satisfying!

Colin is the assistant to the land agent for the late Duke of Beckworth's estate. The land agent has taken off and left Colin with a huge mess. Enter Rose, she is staying at the estate until her betrothed returns from the war. She offers to help Colin sort out the mess the former land agent left behind. As they work together they become friends and when Rose's betrothal is abruptly ended, Colin offers her comfort and compassion.

When Rose's brother shows up and decides to marry her off posthaste to a much older man, Colin again steps in and rescues Rose by telling her brother they are going to marry.

Rose's brother forces their marriage - they had planned to just pretend to be engaged until the new duke could be found and could sort out Rose's dilemma. However, while they never planned to marry in truth, neither is really upset that they are married. They share a very passionate wedding night and both have regrets in the morning - not for themselves, but each for the other. The morning after conversation escalates into an argument and Colin storms off.

Rose realizes that she hurt Colin and goes to find him and make things right. She finds him in his office and they make up - boy, do they make up :) Their reconciliation is interrupted by an intruder and they work together to capture him. In the midst of this - Colin professes his love to Rose - which while it was super sweet - didn't really feel sincere. I missed the build up to the declaration - it just seemed to come out of the blue.

This novella is short, sweet, action packed, spicy and is very fast paced. I am would definitely recommend this book and am looking forward to reading the other novellas in the series!

I received this from the author for a review...

Kate makes history so real. I adore her stories even when they are in a format that isn't my favorite. This is the intro story in a 5 part story buy different authors. It would make a great box set but as it is set up it's a serial of sorts. There's no cliffhanger for each romance story but there is a mystery or two that will not be resolved until the last novella...Who's the next duke? What's going on with the missing jewels? My rating is 4 instead of 5 stars because of it's format, not the story.

Kate's story is about Colin Ford, the 5th son of an impoverished earl, who is the new assistant land agent. He's been trying to get his "boss" Archibald Morehouse to teach him the ropes. The book opens when he discovers Mr. Morehouse has resigned, emptied the cash box and ransacked the office before absconding. Poor Colin has to report to the London solicitors how the estate is faring and he fears Mr. Morehouse has stolen from the estate for years. Miss Rose Leyton comes to his aid in straightening the ransacked office, relieving her boredom attending to her elderly Great Aunt. She is a distant relative residing under the family's protection while she waits for her brother and his best friend, her betrothed, to return from the Napoleonic wars. They become friends and he finds she's quite astute in aiding him in bringing order from chaos. When her brother returns and she finds her fiance has married another, Colin find himself coming to her aid in return. This is a delightful love story and introduction to this mystery of "a year without a Duke".

The year is 1816. The Duke of Beckworth has died without a direct heir. As the solicitors attempt to find the next Duke, what happens with the people that depend on Beckworth for their livelihood? There are five books in this series, each written by a different author.

Rose Leyton is an impoverished relative of the Duke and has been living at the country estate while she waits for her fiance and brother to return from war. Colin Ford is the assistant land agent He is the youngest son of an impoverished Earl. When the land agent mysteriously disappears, Colin breaks into the locked office and discovers a disaster. Rose is just the gloried companion for her great-aunt and wants something to do, so she volunteers to help Colin straighten out the mess left by his boss.

Rose is shocked to learn in a letter from her brother that her fiance has gotten married. When her brother wants her to marry an unacceptable man, Colin steps up to the rescue and announces that he has proposed to her. Will Colin be her hero and HEA?

I have read other books by Kate Pearce and this wasn't what I expected. As I was reading, I realized that I really liked it. It was the perfect start to the series and the characters were wonderful. I loved how the romance slowly developed and how Colin was a true hero. This was a wonderful novel. Kate Pearce is such a talented author that can switch styles with grace.

A Year Without a Duke - Book No. 1

Beckworth Park - 1816

The Duke of Beckworth has died and a search is on for his heir.

Miss Rose Leyton, has lived at the estate as an impoverished relative of the late Duke and is doing all she can to help keep the estate running. She has been betrothed to a man for seven years and is waiting for him to return to England after serving in the war.

Mr. Colin Ford, the younger son of an impoverished Earl, is the new land agent. The former land agent ran off right after the Duke died, stealing money and leaving the estate records in a mess. No one knows why he did this.

Rose offers to help Colin sort through the mess of papers left by the former land agent. She is a great help and soon they have things straightened out. Their togetherness during this task soon turns into an attraction.

When Rose receives a letter from her betrothed informing her that he has met and married someone else thus breaking their betrothal, she is hurt. At the same time, she receives a letter from her brother, best friends with her ex-fiancee, telling her that both of them are going to visit her as her brother is insisting on finding a husband for her. She is furious!

When the men arrive, Colin steps in and tells them that he and Rose are engaged. He does this to help shield Rose from a forced marriage. That’s when her brother insists that they marry immediately. What will they do now?

This is a sweet romance and the first book of five in this series.

This was a short and surprisingly delightful start to the A Year Without a Duke multi-author series. It’s well written with interesting characters and even though it didn’t take long to read, I rather enjoyed it.

Colin is the youngest son of an impoverished earl who has gone out into the world of work in order to keep himself fed. While Rose is a quiet companion waiting for her menfolk to return from war. They’re both decent, nice people who aren’t afraid of hard work – and to whom life isn’t always kind. I liked the way they worked so well together, and the way Colin was so quick to stand up for Rose when she really needed him. I also liked that Rose wasn’t a complete pushover, despite what everyone else might think of her.

Okay, because this is short certain things definitely happen a bit quickly, while other issues are left rather open ended – I certainly hope this isn’t the last we’ll hear of Colin’s predecessor, and I was also hoping for something more to happen to both her useless brother and horrible betrothed.

Overall, though, this is an enjoyable, intriguing start to this series and I look forward to seeing what the other authors do with their tales.

"Jilted in January" is the first book in the "A Year Without a Duke" series. This first edition to the series is by Kate Pearce. A series built upon the missing Duke of Beckworth all written by different authors. Certainly a new experience for me. I cannot wait to see how well the stories all fit together.

Rose Leyton is waiting at the Duke of Beckworth's estate for her bethrothed to finally come home from the war and marry her already! Colin Ford is also at the same estate trying to pick up the pieces of the mess left by the former crooked land agent.

This was a fast-paced, engaging story with great character development. I adored Colin's character and loved the way he championed for Rose when her brother and "intended" finally arrived at the estate. There were definitely sparks between the two.

The only reason I am giving this story 4 stars is that the story just ends. Yes, all loose ends between Rose and Colin's romance are tied up but it seemed a bit abrupt. I'm hoping this is due only to the fact that there are still more stories to go with the entire story line which I cannot wait to get my hands on.

This is book 1 in A Year Without a Duke series, a multi-author series.

Rose Leyton is living at the Duke of Beckworth's country estate waiting on her brother and fiancee to return from the war. Feeling restless and bored, she volunteers to help the assistant land agent, Colin Ford, clean up the mess that the land agent left upon his fleeing the estate.

Colin enjoys spending time with Rose and since she is already betrothed, he can act himself instead of acting as a peer of the realm. When Rose learns that her fiancee has married another, Colin steps up with a marriage proposal of his own, when it looks like she will be married off to cruel man.

Can the marriage of convience turn into one of love.

This is the first book of five that tells the story of the residents of the Duke of Beckworth's estate. Having read all 5 of them, I would definitely recommend reading them all together, although they could be read as stand alone.

I enjoyed this short story. I liked that Colin and Rose became friends before anything romantic started between them. I was a very enjoyable quick read!

Thanks go out to the author via NetGalley for a copy of the book in exchange of an honest review.

This is a cute novella. Rose is under the protection of the new duke, even though no one knows where he is. She is kind of trapped in his home, she has been betrothed for years to her brother's friend, Henry, and she is waiting for them to finally get married.
Colin and Rose become friends at the duke's estate, he works there as the estate manager, but he is the son of a peer. Colin is there when Rose received a letter from her brother letting her know that her fiancé married another woman and he feels terrible for her. Rose is too kind and sweet and pretty for a man to throw her over with no explanation.
Rose's brother and ex-fiancé show up at the duke's estate and Rose is really upset. Her brother tries to force her into another marriage and Colin stands up for her. They were to have a pretend engagement, until her brother turns up the heat on them.
Rose was treated so badly by her brother and ex-fiancé, Colin was so sweet to rescue Rose when he could. This story is sweet, there are a couple of passionate scenes that were well done and I really enjoyed reading about Rose and Colin. Highly recommended.

5 Novella’s written to cover a year without a Duke. January is the first in the series and with 81 pages to turn it was an easy and quick read. Rose Leyton is a cousin to the previous Duke of Beckworth and living in one of his homes. Colin Ford is the fifth son of an earl. Rose is patiently awaiting the return of her fiancé Henry. Colin is the land agent of the property and is busy picking up the pieces of the previous agent Mr. Morehouse. Rose and Colin are great together. The pace is fast and we have little time for character development but I quickly liked the two together. Rose’s brother David and David's best friend her ex-fiance Henry are both despicable. Colin’s father is no better. The way the family is written they are either too weak to do any good, or too vain or shallow to care for others. I hated all their family members and hope bad things happen to them in the next installments. The ending did leave me with a lot of questions and hopefully some of them will be answered.

Thank you Netgalley for this ARC for my honest review.
