Nancy and her friends think there is nothing more fun than ice cream in the summer. So when they find out that the owners of the local ice-cream factory are hosting a contest, the Clue Crew can't wait to enter! Contestants must come up with brand-new flavors. And they can use whatever ingredients they want! Nancy is sure that her entry -- Clue Berry -- will win!
But when a friend's secret recipe goes missing, Nancy suspects that someone not-so-sweet is up to no good.
Carolyn Keene is a writer pen name that was used by many different people- both men and women- over the years. The company that was the creator of the Nancy Drew series, the Stratemeyer Syndicate, hired a variety of writers. For Nancy Drew, the writers used the pseudonym Carolyn Keene to assure anonymity of the creator.
Edna and Harriet Stratemeyer inherited the company from their father Edward Stratemeyer. Edna contributed 10 plot outlines before passing the reins to her sister Harriet. It was Mildred Benson (aka: Mildred A. Wirt), who breathed such a feisty spirit into Nancy's character. Mildred wrote 23 of the original 30 Nancy Drew Mystery Stories®, including the first three. It was her characterization that helped make Nancy an instant hit. The Stratemeyer Syndicate's devotion to the series over the years under the reins of Harriet Stratemeyer Adams helped to keep the series alive and on store shelves for each succeeding generation of girls and boys. In 1959, Harriet, along with several writers, began a 25-year project to revise the earlier Carolyn Keene novels. The Nancy Drew books were condensed, racial stereotypes were removed, and the language was updated. In a few cases, outdated plots were completely rewritten.
Other writers of Nancy Drew volumes include Harriet herself, she wrote most of the series after Mildred quit writing for the Syndicate and in 1959 began a revision of the first 34 texts. The role of the writer of "Carolyn Keene" passed temporarily to Walter Karig who wrote three novels during the Great Depression. Also contributing to Nancy Drew's prolific existence were Leslie McFarlane, James Duncan Lawrence, Nancy Axelrod, Priscilla Doll, Charles Strong, Alma Sasse, Wilhelmina Rankin, George Waller Jr., and Margaret Scherf.
I got this for my 7-year-old but it also held the attention of my 4-year-old despite there being few illustrations. It's decently written (though nothing special IMO) and a good little mystery for the early elementary age reader. I was amused by the ice cream company owners, Jim and Barry, who were so obviously a reference to another favorite ice cream duo from real life ;-) I wasn't thrilled about a few scenes with some rudeness between kids, but it was pretty mild. My biggest complaint is that, in their attempt to solve the crime, Nancy and the Clue Crew actually commit a crime of the same magnitude! This is never addressed at all, and scanning over reviews, it appears most people either not bothered by it. Still, if you're going to share this with your young reader, you might want to read my spoiler in case you'd like to make it a discussion point afterwards:
Ive been reading this book for a few days now and finally finished it. I read it to my 5 year old as her bed time story. I had already figured out the mystery by reading chapter one. I could see how children love these mystery series. Nancy and her friends participate in an icecream contest. Her friend Kendra loses her contest recipe. Nancy and the clue crew are on a mission to see who stole Kendra's ice cream recipe. It does make you want to keep reading to see what happens next. Will be reading more of these my daughter.
This is the second book in the "young" Nancy Drew series of stories. I absolutely loved the original Nancy Drew tales as a child and I am looking forward to sharing them with our girls. In the meantime, this series for younger readers is a great way to introduce them to Nancy and her pals. The mysteries are simple and do not put Nancy and her friends in danger. They are entertaining and keep our girls guessing.
This book revolves around Nancy Drew and her best friends, Bess and George. They join a fun and exciting ice cream-making contest. But Nancy and her Clue Crew have to figure out what happened when a secret recipe goes missing. I didn't figure out the riddle until the very end, and I loved how the hints were spread out in the story. Setting the story in an ice cream contest gave it a unique and tasty twist that made it even more fun to read. Work together and figure out ways were the main ideas of the book. Teamwork is clear in the way Nancy, Bess, and George work together to find the criminal and help each other out during the investigation. The Clue Crew uses critical thought to put together hints and figure out what's going on, which is a big part of the story. These ideas make the story interesting and teachable for kids who read it. Kids' mysteries are what this book is mostly about. Kids who read this book might learn how to use logic and observation to solve problems and how important it is to work together to do so. Nancy and her friends show that you can solve even the hardest problems by asking questions and paying close attention to the details. I really liked this book because it had both mystery and ice cream, which are two of my favorite things. The story was also fun and cheerful. It was a pleasure to read because the people were likeable and the setting was fun.
Three-part cliffhangers and hints were used by the author to make this book interesting. These literary techniques made the writing better by keeping the story interesting and fun for kids to read. The last lines of each chapter left me eager to keep reading to find out what would happen next. In the beginning of the story, when the recipe goes missing, there are hints that someone close to the competition might be involved. Predicting was a smart way to drop hints about how to solve the puzzle. Some characters' strange behavior or things getting lost were small hints that later came together in an acceptable way. This made the story more interesting and made people think more deeply. This book is anti-bias because it encourages everyone to be included and work together. No matter how different they are, the characters cooperate and accept each other's ideas and skills. The book sends good messages about working together and understanding by showing how important it is to be fair and collaborate.

RL.3.9- Compare and Contrast themes, settings, and plots of stories by the same author about the same or similar characters (e.g., in books from a series)
What is your overall assessment of the book? This is a great book! It is fun, has a little bit of mystery, and can begin to allow children to love reading.
Bess, George, and Nancy are the Clue Crew. Somehow, when together, they find a mystery to solve. This time they were making a recipe for ice cream. They wanted to win the competition from the local ice cream factory, the owners, Jim and Barry were offering access to the factory and ice cream for a whole year.
Kendra had made a batch of her 'secret recipe' ice cream, 'Chock full of Chocolate' with four different varieties of chocolate in it. The recipe was stolen and the Clue Crew took on the case to solve the mystery. They were getting better at working things out. The Clue Crew made a list of suspects and asked questions. It was the day before the contest and they still didn't know who had taken the recipe.
Deidre had a website with photos of her friends. She promised not to tell about Kendra's secret ice cream, because they were best friends. Soon enough though, the Website had announced that Kendra had a winning recipe.
The Clue Crew's ice cream was not ready because the dog Choc Chip licked up the container full. They had to make a second batch. Would their ice cream, be prepared in time, for the contest and solve the mystery too?
Could the thief be Mr Dippy the grumpy ice cream van man and his son Harrison? Or, could it be Kevin, who was never allowed to eat sweets because his parents ran a health food shop?
You'll have to read 'Scream for Ice Cream' to find out.
This is a really cute story! I'm really enjoying this series!
Things to be aware of in "Scream for Ice Cream:"
Language: -1 "dumb"
Additional Notes: -A mention of "Godzilla" and later, "Mr. Drippy is Godzilla." -They name someone as the "meanest ice-cream man in River Heights. Maybe the world!" -Nancy, Bess and George are trying to help their friend find her ice cream recipe that she thinks was stolen. However, in their attempt to track down the thief, they do "steal" another person's recipe. Granted, they didn't take the actual recipe, but rather the piece of paper under the recipe and were then able to figure out the contents. It was hypocritical considering they are trying to track down a potential recipe thief.
Reviewed by my 7-year old with spoilers: It was a little scary so I gave it a four (stars). When Nancy, Bess, and George (the detectives) snuck into an ice cream factory, it was a little scary when they got out of the factory because they weren’t supposed to go in there and I thought they were going to get caught. It was also scary because they went inside the shop and saw a door that said, “Employees Only” and one of the detectives thought the sign meant kids in the ice cream contest, like themselves. So, they opened the door, went inside and George almost fell in one of the tubs of ice cream!! And the tubs weren’t small! Dun, dun, dun…
I nice book following The Clue Crew on their next adventure, and a yummy one at that. The girls enter a contest to create the next great ice cream flavor and the winner gets a silver ticket entitling them to a free pint of ice cream every month. Every kid in town is excited at the chance to win free ice cream. Unfortunately, Kendra's secret Chock Full of Chocolate recipe goes missing and it's up to The Clue Crew to find out who stole it before the contest starts. Will they find the recipe in time? With Nancy Drew on the trail, of course they will. But will they also win the contest with their Clue-berry ice cream recipe? Or will Chock Full of Chocolate win?
Nancy Drew is great at observing and connecting the dots when a mystery happens at her school or community. She is also good at g helping friends patch up a damaged friendships. She and her two eight year cousins and also friend ships. All the while participating in an ice cream contest. It's friends on fun adventure. Will they find the ice c ream recipient in time for the contest? Fun book
Nancy and the Clue Crew are on a mission to determine who has stolen their friend Kendra's ice cream recipe. The clues lead to several potential suspects and the Crew uses their deductive reasoning and talents to find the culprit. Another very cute mystery with adorable titles and entertaining arts/crafts at the end of the book. Would recommend to parents with younger children that enjoy a good mystery. 🍦🍦🍦🍦
These little Clue Crew books are so simple and easy to read, I generally read them to the kids in one day. They like not having to wait to solve the mysteries anyway. The Nancy Drew Clue Crew books are a good way to get your kids introduced to mysteries without any heavy or dark material. Light and fun.
Another Super Cute Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew Story!
These books are perfect for younger girls—six through nine, I’d say—and there might even be some boys who enjoy them. Scream for Ice Cream is Nancy, Bess, George’s second mystery. Someone stole their friend’s top-secret, oh-so-yummy ice cream recipe, and the Clue Crew is on the case! Enjoy!
Another book I still vaguely remember over a decade ago. Upon re-read, I still associated the Clue Crew’s ice cream with a discontinued Jamba Juice Chocolate/Berry smoothie. Inexplicably. I could taste it as I was reading.
This series is well-written and it’s good for me to escape to this 8-yr-old-stakes mystery.
Another nice offshoot Nancy Drew title for younger readers, focused on making ice cream for a contest. There are some nice twists included, so whodunit isn't quite as clear as you might think. Also, there's a good ending (but not for who you'd think)!
Downside: likely to make you want ice cream... :D At least a recipe is included!
Another detective mission. Who doesn't like ice cream well we need to find out what happened to Kendras recipe. Are she wont have a chance to get free ice cream. Well the Clue crew figure out this one ?yes.
Usually I don’t mind the cheesiness of books like these cause they’re made for children, but the stupidity of the characters was honestly the most annoying thing. Like way more annoying than the last book. That’s why it went down a star.
I didn't really like this book. It's a really short book but there is a ton of them in the series. I think that it's such a short read that you can read it in like 10 minutes. This book was definitely not my favorite.
I love the clever little touches in these books. Jim and Barry the ice cream makers. Haha. I also like the recurring characters, and how they play parts in the mysteries. These books have been a lot of fun for my girls, 5 and 7.
Wonderful book for new mystery readers. I am not the target audience for this book but I enjoy reading small children's books sometimes. I highly recommend this one for 7-8 year old children who are interested in mystery books.
Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew are entering a contest for the best ice cream. But when a friend's secret recipe goes missing, it's up to the Clue Crew to solve this case. I liked this book because it was fun and it made me look forward to the summer ahead of me!
3.5 stars. In this book, there is a big ice cream flavor creation contest. One of the girls' friends creates a recipe and it gets stolen. The Clue Crew has to figure out whodunnit. It was a fun read, but the Mr. Drippy ice cream villain and the ice cream club, etc. was a little over the top.
